With low-flying warplanes, tanks and battle re-enactments, it was some birthday party.
But, hey, that’s Charles Burnett III for you. It was the American multimillionaire’s 51st birthday, after all. For a man frequently observed driving a tank around the grounds of his Georgian mansion, it was nothing out of the ordinary.
But some local residents did not take kindly to the tycoon turning their Hampshire village into a battlezone. They were indignant and dismayed, as memories of the Second World War were revived.
The day’s events included air displays by a two-seater Harvard fighter that swooped over Portmore as pyrotechnicians set off mock bombs in the 95-acre parkland in front of his Newtown Park country pile. A 1930s de Havilland Tiger Moth biplane and a Russian Yakovlev Yak18 roared overhead performing flypasts. The grounds of the estate were transformed into a battlezone as 20 off-duty soldiers from the Royal Logistics Corps reenacted skirmishes from the Falklands conflict, with blank-firing rifles.
The centrepiece of the event – entitled “military transport through history” by the host, who was also marking the 25th anniversary of the Falklands conflict – involved some of his cherished collection of amphibious and armoured vehicles.
The hundred or so guests, who had been invited to wear vintage costumes, danced to an orchestra performing Vera Lynn classics and military music. A firework display rounded off proceedings.
The event, for which permission had been obtained, raised £27,000 for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.
Pamela Watson, 75, said: “The planes were swooping in so low and I was very frightened because they were incredibly noisy, roaring overhead.
“There were loud explosions as well, which shook the windows in my kitchen. It sounded like there was a war going on and I had to stay indoors.”
Althea Ayre, a widow in her eighties, said: “There were lots of people going about in camouflage and tanks driving around – it was very frightening. I lived through the Second World War and I have painful memories of that time.”
Mr Burnett, who was born in Britain and has US, UK and Canadian citizenship, was not available for comment yesterday but his estate manager, Rob Gray, dismissed the complaints. “Nobody even broke a fingernail,” he told The Times. “I’m sorry the noise upset people but you can’t please everybody. It was harmless fun. The whole locality had been notified by handbill ten days earlier.”

Happy Birthday, Charles. As one of your ex staff at Los Locos, I am glad you had a great party AND raised so much for a worthwhile charity. This man does a lot of charitable work not least his effort to set a new land speed record for a steam driven car .(http://www.steamcar.co.uk/) .. with the intention that the project will create interest among the next generation of engineers and designers to work toward cleaner and safer forms of transportation, both public and private and bring another land speed record to Britain.
What would you do if you had the money to live out your fantasies?
Some of the complainers should try living on an estate next to some really antisocial neighbours - day in, day out - then they'd have something to complain about.
James, Nottingham,
MOUNTAINS & molehills?????
So what, the guy knows how to have fun AND raise money for a good cause in the process!
If it wasn't those 'old girls' whining it would be somebody else, you can't please them all. Mr. Burnett, I sincerely hope you continue to have fun!
Hey!, how about a rock festival in your beautiful parkland setting? COOL!!!
rich, hampshire,
We need more eccentrics like this !
Raised a lot of money for worthy charity into the bargain
Phil, Brighton, East Sussex
A strange way to celebrate a birthday, having tanks on the streets of a sleepy English village. But I don't think that Mr Burnett is glorifying war with this display. With the money that he has raised for the Poppy appeal - something that we all tend to forget about between December and October - I believe he should be commended for what he has done.
Steve, Ovingham, Northumberland
Memories of WW2?
Get a grip.
Its not my thing, but its HIS money.
Surely he isn't doing anything much different than what UK
rich folk (and The Royals) do all the time.
CE, Ashland, US
Happy Birthday Charles from all your friends in Texas! And what a fabuolus amount of money raised for the Poppy fund.....More people should spend their birthday paying respect to the past whilst paying it forward.Hopefully you will start a trend! Many Happy Returns.
Anne, Houston, Texas
I totally agree: War is great fun - for boyish men who never needed to experience the realities of a war. And next time Mr Burnett you should reenact - let's say - the Holocaust maybe. I was told that was great fun as well - depending on which side of the fence you take part in. Hope there will be a lot of birthdays left for you, Mr Burnett. So long
Dirk R Bode, Hamburg, Germany,
Wow - his neighbours were so lucky to be able to witness that free show. As it was a one off event the whingers should permanently lock themselves in their houses.
Mike, Gloucester, UK
Good on him, £27,000 was raised for charity and probably a good time was had by all involved. (if not the neighbours)
If this were to happen every weekend then perhaps the neighbours would have a right to feel dismayed but it was a one off and has probably done more good for Falklands veterans than this government has.
Steven Harker, Skiton, NorthYorkshire
The guy raised a wad for the Royal British Legions Poppy Appeal, that counts for something, doesn't it?
Why not invite Pamela and Althea next year so they could enjoy the show first-hand.
For that matter, how do I get an invitation to next year's bash?
I'd even volunteer to pass out those handbills.
Can I bring my own tank? OK, so maybe just a jeep . . .
Mick, Camarillo, CA
Frankly, for sheer dramatic entertainment, that doesn't beat the Paris Hilton saga !
Ronnie, Paris, FRANCE
Oh, for heavens sake.. it's not like it's every day. He gave fair warning and the man still gets it in the neck.
I'd say it was sheer jealousy.
Tina, Düsseldorf, Germany
A "Harvard fighter"? The North American T6 (aka Harvard) is a classic military training aircraft; hence the two seats!
Would the locals have complained if it had been a Spitfire?
They are welcome to display over my garden any time....
Gill Courage, Stroud, England
Ive never met anyone in their eighties who..when pressed...didn't have something to complain about..and rightly so.
But on this occasion I suspect it was Michael Horsnell's grandmother.
