Perhaps the judge knew what he was doing after all. The jailed heiress Paris Hilton has decided that she is going to stop acting dumb because it is "no longer cute".
The remark was made in a telephone call at the weekend with Barbara Walters, the American broadcaster, in which Hilton described her brief spell behind bars last week - after which she was released and then sent back to jail by a judge.
“I was not eating or sleeping. I was severely depressed and felt as if I was in a cage,” the 26-year-old said. “It was a horrible experience.”
Asked how she is now she has been sent back, Hilton replied: “I used to act dumb. That act is no longer cute.
“Now, I would like to make a difference. God has given me this new chance.”
The comments appeared to be further confirmation that Hilton and her advisers are trying to make up for the public relations disaster of her behaviour last week, when was dragged back to jail crying and screaming after a Superior Court judge decided that she should not have been released after serving three days of a 45-day sentence for a breach of probation.
Since then, Hilton has appeared to be a model citizen. In a statement released yesterday through her lawyers she announced that was not planning to appeal against her return to prison and would serve out her sentence even though it was "by far the hardest thing I have ever done".
"I must also say that I was shocked to see all of the attention devoted to the amount of time I would spend in jail for what I had done by the media, public and city officials,” she added.
“I would hope going forward that the public and the media will focus on more important things like the men and women serving our country in Iraq and other places around the world.”
Yesterday, Hilton was visited at the maximum-security detention centre by her sister, Nicky, and Stavros Niarchos, an ex-boyfriend. "She’s being strong,” Nicky Hilton said as she walked out of the jail.
Hilton’s path to prison began on September 7, when she failed an alcohol test after police saw her weaving down a street in her Mercedes-Benz on what she said was a late-night run to a hamburger stand. She pleaded no contest to reckless driving and was sentenced to 36 months’ probation, alcohol education and $1,500 in fines.
In the months that followed, she was stopped twice by officers who discovered her driving on a suspended licence - which saw her ordered before Judge Michael T Sauer and sentenced to jail.

Paris Hilton is just adorable - in a strange kitschy sort of way. I love her. She's like a roadkill you can't take your eyes off for some strange reason.
Anna, Melbourne,
'I used to act dumb' - sister you must think the rest of the world is dumb if you think we ever bought into the notion that you were acting!
Inger, Oslo, Norway
Paris Hilton lives in a permanent celebrity bubble like all the other hollywood 'celebs' out there and which for now, has been punctured and quel horreur! Reality Bites!!
The histrionics and shaking/crying in the courtroom was no illness .. just the awful realisation that for once 'her people' can't get her out of this one. For one so utterly spoiled and pampered, jail is one huge reality check and wake call for her which makes it all the harder for her, 'the princess' to deal with.
At 26 it seems she has never grown up. Her parents have to shoulder some responsibility for this. Perhaps while in jail she may have some time to reflect that her celebrity star status has a limited shelf life. 4 days jail and say 200 hours community service a much more appropriate sentence for her.
I don't for one second believe she was the author of the damage limitation statement put out by her .. of course her lawyers wrote it! Time to get a grip Paris and turn your life around!
carolann, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia
Why does anyone care what happens to this woman named after a hotel?
Ian Monier-Williams, Southampton, Hampshire
Funny how in America there are folk killing robbing and running around with guns, and you get jailed for driving on a suspended licence,
American folk are nice in general, I know I spend alot of time there, so my comment is a general one, wake up America
John Armitage, Le Taillan Medoc, France
The statements sound like they are written by an adviser.
Can you trust statements from those who are behind bars?
Kevin, Manchester, UK
I would hope going forward that the public and the media will focus on more important things like the men and women serving our country in Iraq and other places around the world.
Thank you, Paris. This really is of no concern to me, or anyone. I'm sure you'll survive your little sentence, and life will go on. (Had it been a lay person like me, I'd probably get more than 45 days...)There are so many problems in the world, people suffering - and the media has effectively used you to distract us once again from reality.
Wake up America. Celebrity gossip is not important.
jeanette, Staten Island, NY,
PAris has found god and is not gonna act stupid anymore - sounds like the recipe for Presidential Candidate if you ask me!
Andy, Seattle, USA
last week, Paris behaved like a spoilt child having a tantrum...... refusing her food, constantly crying. Isn't this what kids do when they don't get their own way? Sorry love, now's the time you need to start growing up a bit and behaving more like a responsible adult like the rest of us have to do, money or no money.
Jo, staffordshire,
My 1st reaction was 'oh good, another vacuous moron with more money than sense has got her just reward' Then I thought a bit. now I feel pity for this soul- neglected child, as I did for Miss Goody with her appaling behaviour on Big Brother. We all should, as decent humans, curb this waste of our young and start to teach the values of respect and care for others, and turn from the self-destructive me-me-me mindset (and be rid of this air headed 'celebrity' culture) to something contructive. Get yourself educated, little girl, and grow up. There's a fantastic world out here for you to work good in. Adult learning has never been easier. I know anything is possible with a bit of tenacity- I'm in my early 50's and got a Masters degree last year!
Odette Nelson, London, U.K.
Could you just stop showing her story?
Yoyo , London,
Good on her - for the comments. Now I hope she carries it through! Unfortunately she has been a role model for the hedonistic sect that has taken over the youth of todey. Maybe, just maybe she could make a difference by adjusting her attitude? We'll see...
I was amongst the many who castigated the spoilt little brat for feeling hard done by for being sent back to jail/prison/whatever to serve her full term. I have never liked her self-portrayal and the messages it has sent out. But if this is the leopard changing it's spots or Prince(ss) Hal growing up then I'm right behind her.
Time will tell...
Vaughan Morgan-Jones, Leicester, United Kingdom
Paris is still young and just had become too caught up in the "Hollywood-hype" during the past few years. I believe that it is great that she is willing to challenge her normal habits and turn around for the better and I wish her the best of luck. For everyone against Paris Hilton, just imagine if you were that beautiful and rich at such a young age. The lime-light would be following your every move 24/7. I doubt even half of you would ever survive.
Lauren, Devon, Pa

Bring back conscription and send her to Baghdad!
Alex, Southampton, UK
Stop acting dumb? But it comes so naturally to her.
Eugene, Heidelberg, germany
Sorry, Susan H, our journalists are not stupid, it's just that in England,a prison is where you go if you are convicted of a lock-uppable offence, so it is the vocabulary we use. We don't have jails like you.
Jessica, Sheffield,
Madam
Learn how to live poor and rich. Just because you are a celebrity does not mean a small smile will melt the hard hearted judge and let you off. Broke the law, face the jail. It was lucky that you were given 45 days in the house. Think of the Guantanamo Bay, they have nothing to forward. At least you have a prison. And with the smile you have who knows you will get better dinner and bed full b/b TV and stereo sound less your songs.
Firozali A.Mulla MBA PhD, Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania
No she doesn't have to act dumb because it is all inherent ,she just can't help being dumb!
Wing, Poole, UK
I think the Judge abused his power. I'm tired of Judges wanting toecome celebs, perhaps we should find out about his family and what his kids are up to and then we will understand why he descriminated against Paris. I may also add that I am not a Paris fan but a Judge should not sentence someone because of their name, or celebrity status but rather by the crime committed and the standard punishment.
Hilda, Kona, Hawaii
Come on, the war in iraq is boring and grim.... who wants to read about sectarian conflict and terrorism when you can read comedy news about Paris Hilton going to jail.
I knew that there were going to be yet more pointless civilian deaths in baghdad, but I didn't know that Paris would be dragged back to prison weeping.
Now I'm off to get some celebrity magazines.
Hugh, London,
Nice script, Paris....
anna marshall, boise, id
Why do reporters keep referring to a return to prison? The woman is not in prison, she's in a jail for heaven's sake. How can journalists not know the difference?
I hope she learns a lot from this mistake, and maybe it isn't just p.r. Maybe it actually will make her think about taking responsibility for her own actions.
Susan H, Paradise, CA
Stop acting dumb? But she´s a natural.
Eugene, Heidelberg, germany

Paris being jailed is sending a message to ALL the pretty people out there. Times are getting harder and the public is beginning to lose patience with these useless, shallow beings. I believe that Lindsay, Nicole and the rest of the gang have pricked up their ears and are trembling in their stilettos.
buster, Greenfield, Indiana
In all honesty, I never thought of Paris Hilton as dumb. As a matter of fact, I thought she was one of the smartest celebs out there to basically become a world icon from doing...nothing. Maybe the dumb ones are the media and society for actually falling for it.
I wish her all the best. Maybe she truly has turned over a new leaf.
Tenisha Anderson, Peoria, IL
Uh . . .who cares? Don't we have other news to read? You know, topics like war, crime, taxes, politics . . .want ads - ANYTHING else. GEEEZE.
David, Raleigh, USA/NC
You know how I know she's dumb? The tee shirt she had made said, on the front, "That's Hot" and on the back, "Your Not". YES, she spelled it YOUR not YOU'RE. Sorry, but those are words you learn in the first grade. Anyone who can't spell that word is indeed DUMB.
Caroline, New York,
It all comes down to the LAW. Nothing else. Has she been treated fairly under the LAW? Yes. I saw Neil Cavuto saying on the air that he did not think what she did was a jailable offense. It is. DUI is a serious crime and in some states considered attempted murder under the LAW. She cried for a second chance to the judge when she was first sentenced for violating parole. What she has never realized is that parole IS the second chance. So she got what she asked for and then screwed it up. I don't think her being sent back to jail is actually the same as others would have gotten. She is being singled out somewhat. But the courts have the final say ander the LAW. Yes the Sheriff had every right under his position to allow her to serve the remainder of her sentence under house arrest. The judge felt otherwise. One thing appears to be happening to validate this whole thing - Paris has realized she needs to grow up. She could be much more of a positive role model to her fans.
j.k., Seattle, WA
i think the media has been very unkind to paris. and most of the things they say are not true. why she be punished more then any one else is.
angelyn begovich, bethlehem, pa.
So she's 'shocked to see all the attention'? I thought that was what she was all about......
Lena, Copenhagen, Denmark
I'm so sick of it that I'm never darkening the door of another Hilton hotel, not even for a drink or a meal. Seeing the name nauseates me. I'm going over to Marriott and tell them "Paris, the no longer dumb, sent me." Everyone else who's complaining, put your money where your mouth is.
By the way, going from sobbing and shaking uncontrollably and calling for mommy to making such concise, thoughtful statements in two days? Her shrink and the psychtropic drugs have worked a medical miracle. Now why couldn't he do that before? Why is he suddenly so successful?
Those who choose to live vicariously through Paris may cling to these statements religiously, but I don't buy it. Most people who think critically will see these statements for the publicity ploys that they are.
Emmo, Gainesville, FL
it is so sad that the real criminals such as murderers, white colar thiefs, burglars etc. are not sent to jail, while easy-to-catch offenders such Paris Hilton is sent to prison. it is even sadder that many seems to be intertaint with it. What a degrading nation!
simona M., vilnius, Lithuania
I used to act dumb. That act is no longer cute."
It never was cute.
Heather, Hopatcong, NJ
uh oh, Paris as the upstanding good girl pillar of society... please noooooo
bbboy, Melbourne, Australia / Victoria
I think she should have had the privilege of general population rather than segregation.
Duane Neighbors, Powder Springs, GA
Act dumb? I don't believe she's that good an actress!
Mike, Luton, UK
Paris says acting dumb "is no longer cute". It was never cute. You want to make a difference Paris? Just disappear for good.
Laura Roberts, London, UK
So she is 'severely depressed' - I doubt she would ever be able to understand what depression really is.
CM, Nottingham,
I suspect that what the media now doesn't like what Paris Hilton is saying,
that God had something to do with her change. If she had said the judge or her dog were totally responsible, the media would gladly accept it. But God? yeah, right. But some people do find God in jail, prison, or death row, though. But news reporters and the mediameisters seldom find him anywhere.
May this young woman continue on her new path, and may she not listen to
Al Sharpton who seeks a visit with her. He has little of value to offer.
t. badillo , Dallas, Tx
Paris Hilton, "I used to act dumb" but now I don't even need to act, it just comes naturally.
Mike Jones, Farnborough, Hampshire
She got what she deserved. If it had been me I would have gotten the same. She thought she was too good and too rich for such actions to be taken against her. She defied the law by even driving and got caught twice before anything was really done. What kind of justice was that?
I am sick of heraing about her.
Let us see how sincere she is. I'll wait and count the number of military bases she visits, but I won't hold my breath.
Gloria Thompson, Albemarle, N.C.
DOES THIS ACTUALLY MERIT ANYONE'S ATTENTION???? I'll leave it at that.
LAN STEKLA, MARDEL, NH
In response to the comment by S. Rudelski, Woodland Hills, USA/CA --
Yes, many people who aren't rich and famous do get reduced jail times. But for all those average people, the approximate $1400 monetary fine she got would have also been a meaning penalty. And, for many average people the prospect of serving an unknown period of time in jail would cause us to lose our jobs. Another indirect penalty. The only way that a person like Paris Hilton can really be penalized for repeatedly breaking the law is by taking away her freedom. Making her feel "caged". She has shown nothing but disrespect for the rule of law and public safety.
Mary, near Seattle,
She plans to stop acting dumb? Didn't realise pigs could fly.
Alleem Q, Melbourne, Australia
She would have to do some major changing before I see her as a good role model for teens and girls
mike, private,
This is what the "dumbing down of America" has come to--a president who can't put a coherent sentence together, and a billionaire bimbo who thinks she's above the law. As Gloria Thompson said, let's see if she walks the walk about supporting the troops. I'm sure that more than one has a pinup of her somewhere, so it would be fitting for her to do something worthwhile for a change.
Dr. Don Key, College Park, Maryland
It's easy to understand the politics of envy and why most right thinking humans resent the fact that a guy who built a fortune out of hotels can put in place a legacy that rumbles on for generations, relieving his decendants from the chore of having to work for a living and producing the idle rich like Niarchos's grandson and his ex, the current most famous occupant of the grey bar hotel. Maybe inheritance tax should be turbo charged into a Francis of Assissi tax under which all fortunes have to be relinquished on death. Paris would certainly not be able to act dumb anymore in that situation, she'd be too busy working.
Paul, Hong Kong,
Who is Paris Hilton?
Our constitution is being used for toilet paper, the country is fast becoming a has-been, and somehow this crap is all we can give our attention to?
We get exactly what we deserve!
Tom, Portland, OR
I still don't think Paris gets it. I believe she still thinks "it's not right" she went to jail for driving with a suspended license. Doesn't she realize the greater crime of a DUI is why she's in jail? The results of a DUI could have been much worse, and she should thank her lucky stars that she didn't kill someone and is being given a second chance.
Gwen, Honolulu,
I would hope going forward that the public and the media will focus on more important things like the men and women serving our country in Iraq and other places around the world.
Maybe she finally has grown up, after reading this statement (sent by a friend to me, since like she says above, there are more important things in the world)
Good luck
Joe, Quincy, MA
If her parents had delivered spankings when she was a child, she wouldn't have to face these problems now. Her experience should serve as an example to parents who fail to discipline their children.
Patrick, Chapman, Kansas USA
Act dumb? She is stupid, it's her handlers and all her PR people who speak for her and they're telling her what to say now. The garbage about medical condition is ridiculous since the day she was free (before her new stint in jail) she was partying at home. How sick could she be? Why wasn't she seeing a doctor? What a lie. There are 1000's of convicts with AIDS, cancer, diabetest, etc. who are sitting in jail so if she's going through shopping withdrawal or some other made up illness, she can stay in that special cell (she's not in with other inmates but a special wing) and maybe decide to do something good with her money instead of partying and buying more shoes. It's even more embarrasing that her parents aren't disgusted by how she acts but then they raised her to be superior to everyone.
Deb, San Jose,
Zzzzzzzzzzzzz
Mike Jones, Farnborough, Hampshire
Paris Hilton has become second only to O. J. Simpson as far as creating public awareness in the USA about the two levels of justice. Perhaps for that she could be given some credit as far as public service time is concerned?
On July 1, 1967, the Times of London ran an editorial under the headline: "Who breaks a butterfly on a wheel." Maybe this time it will be a case of gold being purified by the fire?
Perhaps when she has finished serving her sentence, she can become a high profile spokespereson for people who say they are being charged with a murder they didn't commit?
(Surely she can empathize now with their plight.)
We wish her well.
As the saying used to go back in the Sixties:
Hang in there, baby!
Bob Patterson, Los Angeles, Calif. U. S. A.
Anyone who wasn't famous would have gotten about 2 days in jail. She is being treated unfairly because of her celebrity status.
S. Rudelski, Woodland Hills, USA/CA
I think it is pretty pathetic that the Media covered paris the way they did, I mean filming her get into the police car and follow it all the way to the courthouse like she was a fugitive or something. She made a very careless mistake and she is doing her time so move on already, the news covers it like she is a murder and is going to a federal prison or something. Why not cover more important issues like the war that is going on and bringing our troops home, but devoting all this coverage over paris hilton drinking and driving come on!
Jane , Winston Salem, USA
I was not eating or sleeping. I was severely depressed and felt as if I was in a cage"
well...duh paris... it is a cage
tom, new york, usa
She felt like she was in a cage? In prison? Shocking!
LOL!
starling, Lancaster,
This is the girl who makes fun of people for being poor and for attending public schools. Oh and lets not forget the racial slurs. She should have to serve her full time. You KNOW she was reprimaded innumerable times before ever actually getting even a ticket. SHe is narcissism personified and somehow I don't think that dumb "act" was really an act.
caramella, new york, Ny USA
Look, the litmus test is always if anyone else would get jail time why wouldn't she? The truth is if you or I got busted for DUI & had our license suspended but drove anyway (& even drove drunk) they would throw the book @ us.
I think Paris is correct that much too much has been made of this. They should put her in jail and thats that!
Jeff Tuttle, Oceanside, Ca.
It will be so refreshing if Paris can actually grow up and be a role model. I have hope in that and I am not currently a big fan of her as she has been protrayed.
We are in a time where people who get mass amounts of coverage are using it to provide positivity in our society. I know this girl has such potential and so many resources to come out of this as a huge positive icon and I really hope she will do this for all of us.
geoff, Salt Lake City, ut
Any comment would just be too obvious.
Chris Jackson, London,
In my early youth Jane Mansfield was the "dumb blond" we laughed at. Not until her daughter revealed her I.Q was in the genius range and that she ended up owning millions in real estate did I realize
who was doing the laughing.
Paris inherited millions, but increased that nest egg by her own ability to finess the public. She's still doing it and laughing all the way to the bank. Wait until the movie rights are sold for this story!
Frank Ward, Atlanta , GA
She got what she deserved.
Let's see if she will do anything to support her interest in the war.
I'll wait and count the number of bases she visits, but I won't hold my breath
Gloria Thompson, Albemarle, N.C.
what is wrong with this system of things? It is bias toward the rich!!Had she been black, hispanic, and poor, she would have been serving her time with no fanfare. The system needs to send a cleart message to young ones who drive recklessly, you will pay for your actions, poor rich or handicap.
sylvia, bronx, n.y.
Paris Hilton "used to act dumb"? If there is one thing that's been all to painfully obvious from"The simple life" it's this: She isn't that good an actor!
Andrew, Nashville, Tennessee
Quote: "I was severely depressed and felt as if I was in a cage, the 26-year-old said"
Well thats one description for a prison I guess ,and yes you were in it.
Sergei, London, uk
It is about time the rich and or famous have to abide by the same laws as the rest of us average US citizens.
Kathy, Springfield, OH
I think she should go to jail and stay for the rest of her probabtion time. That's what happens to non-celebrities who break the law again and again.
Kay Harris, Louisville, KY
Yeah that's really funny!!People who find themselves in a "rut" so to speak say that they're going to change all of the time and after the "scared back to innocence" wears off they go right back to being the way they were before. She has not been in there long enough to have had a life changing experience.I don't believe it for one second and as for the "acting dumb" statement. She is 26 yrs old.Come on now.How old do you have to be to realize that you are an adult and acting dumb was never cute!
Tabitha, Murrells Inlet, USA
Not to be cynical but...an awfully fast epiphany there. But hopefully she will grow up a little by the time this is over.
cynthia, Roanoke, VA
Wow, a few days behind in minimum-security county jail and suddenly she's all like, smart and political and stuff.
Kind of like when she was talking about how important it was to vote in the 2004 election but then, like, forgot to vote. Or, like, register to vote.
Nice try, publicist dream team, but we're not stupid. There is no act, she really is that dumb.
Bill, Norfolk, VA
For small kids,it's a stay in the naughty corner for a while to help them realise their wrongs. So I guess for Paris ,it's all happening a bit later in her life.
Mum's the word, New York, NY
No longer act dumb? I must say I have my doubts...
Michelline, Jacksonville, FL, US
'I used to act dumb', from now on I will PROVE it's NO ACT!
Craig, Denver, Colorado
"I used to act dumb", now there is a line! I would say you have to be dumb to pull the stunts she has pulled. She just needs to shut up and pay the price for doing what she did.
Bryan Phillips, Kansas City, Missouri
I agree there are more important things than Paris Hilton. Thank goodness for that.
I for one, just wanted to make sure you got No special treatment.! And to my dismay you did for 1 day. Now you are where you belong and have time to think about what a poor role model you are for the younger generation.
Be patient with people, especially those that disagree with you. After all, they are entitled to their own opinions.
Yarnell, Los Angels,
Hang in there, Paris. You are doing good and growing.
From a grandad in Texas.
Roy Foeh, Seguin, Tx
I feel that it was the right thing that the Judge sent her back to jail. There is no reason why she should not have to serve the time in jail. She broke the law and she should have to serve her time in jail regardless of how much money she has or how famous she is. Would if she would have injured someone while driving? or even killed someone while driving under the influence? She is 26 yrs old, I think it is time for her to grow up and stop playing dumb! Act like an mature adult especially since she is in the public eye.
Sue, Cleveland, oh
Let her stay she desirves it all the laws apply to everyone. Including her.
So bE quite and take it like a woman. Far worse can Happen
Believe Me
Jammy, Cardiff , Wales
i dont think she should get out. she is just like any other person only richer. she thinks shes the king of the world. any one else would have got sentence to jail for the same time but not granted time to get out every other day. even though i think she can change someone can make a difference.
manny rivers, san diego, california
I know Paris, like everyone else, should get a punishment, but still feel that the 45 days of solitary confinement was harsher than usual. I figure that was an effort for the judge to prove she wouldn't get preferential treatment. However, it seems, he over did it. George Michaels who was found slumped over the wheel at an intersection for doing heavy drugs was given 100 hours of community service. no jail time. It seems his offense was worse then hers since she was exactly at the mark of .08....
That said, it does seem like Paris is trying to become more mature and that's a good thing. It's too bad that people love to attack her because she's a combination or rich, spoiled and ditzy. The way I look at it, she broke a law and people should want her to pay for that. Yet many seem to enjoy her being punished because she's rich. That's not a good reason. Rich or poor we must all receive the same punishments and criticisms in a fair way.
jz, Keywest,
Jail is not prison. She is in a single man (woman) cell just hanging out. Get real. The only stress she has is a lack of Starbuck's. Try general population Paris then give it a cry.
Jake, colton,
Shocked at the attention. Felt as though she were in a cage. Thinks acting dumb is dumb.
I see that dumb part isn't an act at all. Navel-gazing as an art. This woman is about as deep as sweat on a lizard in the Gobi Desert.
C McC, Rochester, NY
