THE film director Sir Ridley Scott is preparing the most unlikely movie of his career - a feature-length version of the venerable board game Monopoly.
The 69-year-old British film-maker, whose hits include Gladiator and Black Hawk Down, has been offered the pick of young actresses to help turn the property game into a racy comedy thriller.
William Morris, the oldest theatrical agency in Hollywood, has promised Hasbro, which owns Parker Brothers, the manufacturer of Monopoly in the US, that the cream of its stable of 2,000 actors will help create a blockbuster movie.
Scarlett Johansson, 22, who has already made several films in Britain, once joked that she explored London through the British version of Monopoly. She is said to find the prospect of a film version “funny, wacky, but interesting”.
Other stars being considered for roles include Kirsten Dunst, who plays Spider-Man’s girlfriend. Scott is expected to cast a mature actor as Rich Uncle Pennybags, a cavorting capitalist in a top hat.
Hasbro, which claims that Monopoly has been played by 750m people since the 1930s, wants the film to feature “sexy young people” in an attempt to win over teenagers who regard board games as a last resort on a wet afternoon.
“Hasbro already has cool games like Ouija, which could be a supernatural movie, but we think of Monopoly with Ridley Scott as director or producer, as a massive global hit. Everyone has played Monopoly in one version or another so, hopefully, they would be curious about how it translates to the screen,” said a Hasbro consultant last week.

Seconding Rachel K, they're not even trying to hide the fact that it's just a big commercial anymore.
Ginny, Melbourne,
This article illustrates nearly everything I hate about the film industry. Hasbro wants to shoot a two-hour commercial as a part of a marketing strategy to make board games "sexy." I'm not surprised that Scarlett Johansson is involved. Snark.
Rachel K, Chicago, IL
Hey, it worked for Clue.
Michelle, Anaheim, CA
If they could make it as well as Clue I would be in! I only wish Madeline Kahn was still here and could play a role in it.

this sounds a lot like a waste of time and effort, to me. also, i agree about kirsten dunst - she's way more thank 'spider-man's girlfriend.'

Yeah, I think the tank is on E
Then again, maybe it's a real-life drama of a Monopoly game gone horribly horribly wrong and portrays how one game shattered the lives of 3-8 people.
Also, who will be playing the shoe?
Austin, Redwood City, California
1) I recommend hiring the same people who wrote Clue, which was pure comedic gold.
2) Why is Kirsten Dunst identified as "Spider-Man's girlfriend"? She's been in Hollywood for years. She's even headlined a couple of them.
3) Who's going to play the top hat?
Erin, Palatine, IL
I definitely agree with Susan from Boston. It should aim for an adult audience and it will end up appealing to all audiences.
Blanche, Montreal, Canada
If it's directed at teenagers I predict it will tank. This should be a sophisticated adult comedy.
Susan, Boston,
hooray we're out of ideas, doo-dah, doo-dah...
