IN the battle for the women’s vote, Fred Thompson has a secret weapon against Hillary Clinton - the legions of former girlfriends who still adore him and who want him to be president.
The Hollywood actor and former Tennessee senator racked up an impressive list of conquests during his swinging bachelor days in the 1990s, but he appears to have achieved the impossible and kept their friendship and respect.
Lorrie Morgan, a country singer who dated Thompson and considered marrying him in the mid1990s, told The Sunday Times: “I couldn’t think of a bad word to say about Fred if somebody put a gun to my head.
“Fred is a perfect example of chivalry. He’s the kind of man little girls dream about marrying, who opens doors for you, lights your cigarettes, helps you on with your coat, buys wonderful gifts. It’s every woman’s fantasy.” Thompson, who wooed Baroness Thatcher during a visit to London last week, is expected to announce officially next month that he is running for president. He is already challenging Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, for first place in polls of likely Republican voters.
Morgan remembers encouraging Thompson to run for president when they were together. “I think he has a great chance of capturing the women’s vote. He’s majestic. He’s a soft, safe place to be and that could be Fred’s ticket. Women love a soft place to lay and a strong pair of hands to hold us,” she said.
Georgette Mosbacher, a leading Republican fundraiser who dated Thompson after Morgan and remains a good friend, said he would defeat Clinton because of his appeal to “traditional women who will like the Southern gentleman in him”.
He is just as able to charm professional women, she added: “Another thing that is extremely attractive about Fred is that he is a really good listener. As a woman you can talk to Fred about any subject and know that you’re getting someone who respects your opinion and isn’t just being polite.”
In anticipation of a presidential run, a group of potentially supportive Republican congressmen recently questioned him about his private life.
“I was single for a long time and yep I chased a lot of women,” Thompson told them with a grin. “And a lot of women chased me. And those who chased me tended to catch me.”
However, he was also able to reassure them that he was on excellent terms with his first wife and home-town sweetheart Sarah Knestrick, whom he married in Tennessee at 17 and divorced 26 years later. Thompson said he had just spoken to her and she was intending to campaign for him.
“It says a lot about his character that his ex-wife and ex-girlfriends think he is fabulous,” said Mosbacher. “Character is important in a president.”
Mosbacher is a friend of Jeri Kehn, Thompson’s second wife, whom he married in 2002. At 24 years his junior, Kehn has been described as a “trophy wife” but the former Republican consultant is as clever as she is vivacious, according to Mosbacher.
“Just because Jeri is fun and beautiful, one should not make the mistake of stereotyping her. She is not someone who seeks the limelight and will not be out front, but will be very supportive,” she said.
Joe Scarborough, a television presenter, was recently pilloried for wondering on air whether Thompson’s wife “works the pole”, although he later claimed that he had been referring jokily to the pole fitness craze rather than to stripping.
When she was dating Thompson, Kehn complained that she had to chase other women away. “They just won’t leave him alone,” she told a gossip columnist. “I can’t get up to get a cocktail at a party without coming back and finding some girl sitting in my chair.”
One of her rivals for his affection was Margaret Carlson, now a columnist for Bloomberg News, but she has also joined in the praise for Thompson. “He’s handsome, he’s charming, he sounds like a president,” Carlson gushed recently. “He’s smart, he’s articulate, he knows his line, he can hit his mark.”
Morgan blames herself rather than Thompson for the break-up of their “serious” relationship. Although she is a Republican, the country singer believes that she was too politically incorrect to suit the role of senator’s wife. “Country music is all about glamour and shine and politics is a little more reserved,” she said. “I felt I had to change my whole wardrobe.”
Thompson not only charmed her but also the women in her family. At the time, she had two young daughters who are now in their twenties. “My children thought the world of Fred and my mother thinks he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread,” Morgan said. “He has such charisma. He can go to a down-home Southern-fried chicken dinner and later that evening eat the best caviar and drink wine with an ambassador.”
She laughs at the thought that she could have become the first lady. “You know what?” she said. “The White House would never have been the same.”
Personally, between Newt Gingrich and fred thompson, they must have charmed, dated or married all of the women in America.
Thus, a thompson/gingrich candidacy is optimal, presuming we can't get Alberto Gonzalez or Dick Cheney to run in Gingriches place.
Newt Thompson, Atlanta, GA
Obama....Yeah right!!! He is a JUNIOR state senator with crap experience. Look at Chiago and East St Louis. Thats what youll get with Obama.....Have you lost your mind. My votes with Fred all the way... And I am a wounded and disabled soldier from Iraqi Freedom.

Whatever the life that Fred has chosen, is his choice and I hope he's happy. The spouse does say alot about the candidate. I will never vote for a morman as president. I spent 20 yrs. in Utah. What an education on the morman beliefs. We were told and shown that everything is decided at their church. The mountain meadow congressional report can be viewed on line. We met an artist whose grandmother was excommunicated from the church because she voiced her opposition to what the church had done there. The artist had a painting of the mustangs being driven over a bluff near there. That was the way they handled things back then. First thing I was asked was, are you LDS? First thing I was told is they will never accept you! The stake president asked us, if we were Christians? No just Baptists. It was sad living in a beautiful state that was like a foreign country. Pray for the best candidate!

I don't understand how some OLD man thinks by marrying a YOUNG woman it shows he doesn't need viagra. I think with the young woman standing next to the old man it makes him look a heck of a lot older. And he has got to know that, any young woman who marries him is doing it only for money and some sort of power.

To Ray Crawford:
I believe Fred T. is 65 years old. If not 65 he's 64 ready to turn 65.
Tim, Waxhaw, North Carolina
I'm having a tough time getting past the fact that he's married to someone who is younger than his own daughter. How is that pro-woman? If his relationship with his first wife is so great and she still loves him, then why did he divorce her? The old girlfriends, flames, and wife, they sound like great women, but Fred's tendency to keep moving on and dumping them, doesn't impress me. The relationship that does impress me is Mitt and Ann Romney's relationship. Married for almost 40 years with five amazing children and ten beautiful grandchildren. They all seem so happy and sincere. Mitt was clearly a devoted and loving husband and father and still is, to the same wife and children. I'm not looking for someone who is a "charmer" for younger women. I'm looking for someone, with no guile, who'll work hard and who I can trust. When Ann Romney speaks about her husband's character, I'll listen! VOTE MITT ROMNEY!!! STRENGTH FOR AMERICA!!!
Kate Johnson, Bristol, Tennessee
The fact he's had several mutually amicable separations does say alot for the mans character. His stern demeanor and straightforwardness will get him elected. I've looked at the electability of the others and just can't see it happening with them. Some, even as VP's.
The polls show Fred already ahead of the pack, and he hasn't even officially entered the race. All that tells me is, once he does enter in September, sit back and watch his numbers climb.
The Grand-Ticket I'd like to see is Alan Keyes agree to run as Fred's VP which would prime him for the 2012 or 2016 election as president, depending on how many terms Fred decides to run for. Both are very conservative and more than qualified for the positions. And if there is to ever be a first black in the whitehouse, it'll probably be as a vice first, I hope that it's someone with the qualifications and integrity as Alan Keyes or Coni Rice.
Jewliani is too socialist minded- too inline with Clinton and Obama's philosophies.Fred'08

Fred Thompson to me could pull this Counrty together. He has the engery, the right views and if he should run, he has my vote. America is ready to have a female President, but it is not Mrs. H. Clinton. I am not a Republican or a Democrate. I have voted both ways. I want whaty is best for America and right now it is Fred Thompson.
RL Pringle, Lynchburg, USA / VA
Fred Thompson is what our nation needs. I want him to be our next President!
Jimmy Bridges, Manfield Texas,
In reading the comments about a future president of the U.S.
I was reminded of two verses in the book of Daniel in the Old Testament. "He (God) removes kings, and sets up kings" 2:21 and "...the most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomsoever he will, and sets up over it the basest of men." 4:17. No doubt in the 2008 election God will be the one Who turns the hearts of the voters to put in whoever He wants to rule. It may be an evil person to judge us or a person to rule over us righteously. Pray that God will have mercy.

It is unfortunate that Presidential campaigns have turned to the personal habits and proclivities of the candidates rather than their views on the substantive issues. We know Fred Thompson as an actor. What other qulifications does he have eg. educational background, papers published, etc.?
Jeff BNrown, Detroit, MI/USA
If Fred is so chivalrous, why on earth is Mrs Thompson fetching her own cocktails?
Simon Lapthorne, Suffolk,
Ho, brother--"A legion of former girlfriends"? If elected, are we gonna have another Big Willie and "Little Willie" in the White House, or perhaps a bevy of Secret Service agents scouring the Oval Office for hair pins etc. like they did for JFK? This stuff kinda troubles me at this point, but when considering the alternative, Hillary there, I'm "ready for Freddie"...

Emily in Charlotte,
Its a man's job no women could ever fill the shoes for, to say Hillary would have him for breakfast is an idiotic statement obviously from a women scorned by some man in the past. Wake up and smell the coffee.
Shawn , Coppell, usa
To Emily in Charlotte.
Do you really think this nation needs another four years of Bill Clinton as President, much less another eight!?! Do you really believe that Hillery would be President and he would be "just the First Husband"? And pigs fly too, huh? The sad thing is that of all the professed candidates, some 18 now, I believe, none of them has any idea what the electorate may or may not want. They have been professional politicians for so long they are grossly out of touch and have forgotten who sent them there in the first place. They advance their own personal agendas and only pay attention to the polls that are engineered to support their opinion. Once again, it looks like we the electorate will have to choose the lesser of the evils. A really sad state of affairs, don't you think!?!
Steve, Houston, Texas
Ann of Minnesota,
That is quite an assumption. You seem to assume that you are intimately familiar with Senator Thompson's relationship, past and present, with his first wife. Are you a member of the family?... a close confidant?...I think not. The truth is, you have absolutely no idea what happened between this man and his wife. For whatever reason, you seem comfortable demonizing his character...Which seems to indicate you either have political problems with him...or, just as likely....you have personal problems and have, for whatever reason, latched on to the senator as venting mechanism.
CJ
Jack , Tarterus,
Fred Thompson appears to be another Ronald Reagan, but different. He is his own man and has the qualities and characteristics that most guys admire. He's 'down home' but still sophisticated. He has all of the beliefs that I have and I'm sure would be the leader that we need at this time of the country's woes and low ratings. I'd vote for him twice if I could.
Don Pufahl, Los Banos, Merced/California
Wait a minute. Bill Clinton will be able to show just as active a dating life.... and keep a marriage going at the same time. I'm sure Hil will be able to do the same thing with Bill's past.
Fred has nothing on Bill... Go Bill
John doe, Northridge, California
Why aren't people looking at the "second tier" candidates, such as Mike Huckabee? He has conservative credentials, but no one is paying attention.
Earl Flask, Marietta, GA
To Emily in North Carolina: You must not have followed politics for too long. Thompson has a substantial Senate voting record that is solidly conservative; and if you have ever heard him debate the issues on the Senate floor or in public forums, you would know why Republicans are drawn to him. As to his ex's all still loving him: you're right, it's not relevant to his ability to be president. But I suggest to you libs that it speaks to his good character, and his women friends tell stories that are a far, far cry from what Billy Clinton's female acquaintenances had to say about him. How refreshing Bush has been in that regard, and Thompson will no doubt continue the trend.
David Tomaselli, Houston,
Fred Thompson will make me a Republican after years of being a Democrat!!
SDSmith, Dayton, Ohio
I find it hard to believe people are already warming up Thompson's seat in the White House-is he a great politician, has he shown a good grasp of the issues that are facing America at this time? He might be a nice guy but is that all that is needed to win over voters here? It would be nice if people could be a little more discerning.
And to suggest he is a better choice because he is tall is quite frankly ridiculous, I don't remember Margaret Thatcher being a giant. This presidential race is purely to me a popularity contest with little real political content and that saddens me.
Adam L, washington, dc
Anybody taking the time to look at Laurie Morgan's track record of sleeping around with just about anybody would add Fred Thompson to her looooong list.
steve Binder, oxnard, ca
I'm glad Fred Thompson is running for President. He is the dose of common sense this country desperately needs.
Patrick Curry, Irvine, CA, USA
Anyone who has ever broken up with a girlfriend or gotten divorced, or even had a good friend that got divorced knows that it typically ends somewhere between going your seperate ways while trying to forget each other and undying hatred.
Getting along with people is one thing, but getting along with people after having broken up with them or divorced them is rare. The fact that all Fred's exes are this enthusiastic in their admiration of him is all the more rare.
To those of you who can't seem to understand the relevance, consider this a forecast of Fred's diplomacy skills. How many wars do you think could be avoided if everyone was more like that? But let's go a little deeper here.
It says a lot about his character in general. Some people think that a person's character is the root of all their accomplishments and their strengths. Some people think that a strong leader has to have the kind of character that we are seeing in Fred Thompson, evidenced by his exes. You see?
Chet, Mayfield,
Hey Susan...If you are going to quote Roosevelt the least you can do is give him a reference. I like how you changed about two words to make it fit. Really intellectual. Just another unoriginal thought from an unoriginal person. Oh I'm still on the fence between Thompson and Hillary. So this was a non-partisan post.
Use your head.

<i>Fluff articles like this one are the only evidence people are using in basing their support for Thompson. </i>
Well, yeah, this is a puffy piece... but it does tell us one thing that is fairly important: people are searching FT's past romantic life for people with grudges, and nobody holds a grudge or knows more embarrassing dirt than an ex.
So far, most of Fred's exes seem to still think highly of the guy.
That tells me something.

"Yeah, socialism, that's EXACTLY what this country needs right?"
Yes, it is, actually. A combination of socialism and capitalism works much better than pure capitalism (or pure socialism). Look across the borders to Europe (not the UK) and see how it works.
Don't see everything so black and white.
starling, Lancaster,
My God. Are you really considering electing a president on his bedroom record, and how tall he is? This has got to be a Saturday Night routine.
John Day, San Bruno, USA
That's because that is the focus of this particular article. Can't you read? Just because you are uninformed does not mean everyone else is or the info isn't out there. Google Fred Thompson, inform yourself.
Chris, Huntington, WV
As a foreigner looking at the US election, I can only say that Fred Thompson is the only one no one has said anything seriously bad about, and that is a plus. If he can hold on to that once he has entered the race, he will probably be the man to beat. One problem I see is the Secret Service: they like their bodyguards to be at least as tall (if not taller) than the President they protect, but where in hell are they going to find so many 6'-6"-tall people with the appropriate security clearance? Most heads of state are going to look like Pygmies at summits!
Frederick Davies, Oxford, UK
Folks, you have to be kidding me! Fred Thompson is no conservative...sorry to burst the expectation bubble. Or, perhaps todays "republican" isn't any more conservative than others that are pretending to be all the while they champion increased government intrusion and oversight into the lives of the average american citizen. This is the same party that advocates the complete disregard for the US Constitution (just like their democrat "friends" in congress AND THE White House) while keeping people in fear that if you aren't willing to give up your liberties and allow government to snoop on every facet of life; and at the same time a complete and total invasion of our southern border THATS BEEN GOING ON FOR YEARS notwithstanding all of the legislation we were told would fix same in 1986. I have a novel idea: Enforce the laws that exist and FUND them accordingly and quit cramming further dissolution of our soverignty down our throats. Enuf with game show host candidates! Get Real...

A great president is one who can inspire and motivate. The
Dems did their best to marginalize Reagan yet he had that unique leadership that only JFK presented in modern times,
a compelling ability to lead and get results.
Thompson is a leader and will be our next President. No ifs,
ands or buts about it. Regardless of party, this is what we
all respect, the ability to lead.

Fred is on better terms with his EX-wife, than Bill is with Hillary. The pictures of Fred's new wife looking like a hoochie are from Emmy red carpet and other show biz occasions where ALL the women, including Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren, are dressed like hoochies.
Fred is a better lawyer than Bill and Hillary together. I believe he could debate Hillary into a spluttering, shrieking, mess, which is the most important thing.
Sam Jackson, Carrollton, GA
The last thing in the world the US needs is another Reagan. I would vote for Thompson though . . . or Bill Richardson. The rest are second-stringers.

Fred Thompson being judged by his former girlfriends speaks volumes of his character, demeanor and abilities to be a gentlemen and president. A leader is first and foremost a gentlemen, America is blessed with many good candidates for 2008.

The problem I see for Sen. Thompson is that there are a lot more ugly women out there than pretty women. But, Hillary gives him cover to some extent against sure-to-happen suggestions that he'll just be a Republican Bill Clinton when it comes to women. Right now, I like Tom Tancredo, but I know he's never going to get the nomination. So, Fred Thompson is my guy unless and until someone better comes along.
Tim, Decatur, AL
Fred Thompson has probably been sexy since high school. Wouldn't vote for him, but my point is that it has nothing to do with where he comes from, how gentlemanly he is or what he can buy. It's a universal either-got-it-or-don't. Other men without good looks who are sexy are Benjamin Netanyahu and Anthony Quinn, Israeli and Mexican.
Susan, Clayton, US/Georgia
Hussey,
you missed the point....charisma and confidence go together! I know not one single charismatic person, who lacks confidence! To be confident, you have to possess a "brain" and the ability to use it! Thompson is one of the smartest people in politics today. To be leading or close to the lead in polls and not officially running! That speaks volumes to his ablities! Watch what he does in bringing the two sides together!
Bryon, New Braunfels , Tx
Just what we need - another wonderfully charming, chivalrous man to take care of us. And then after he's gone, we realize he's run up all the credit cards and left us with the bill.
I've been to this rodeo.

oh god is this Fred Thomspons strategy for the womens vote. Yes we women don't care about the war, we dont care about education, health care and foreign policy we just want a soft place to land with arms to hold us. I think that's the right women's strategy. He supports the war but on the other hand his girlfriends like him. I think that should be enough to sway the womens vote don't you? I love it Fred, I think you may be a century (or two) late on this one.
Kara, San Rafael, California
Mr. Thompson, America has been waiting a god awful long time for a man of your stature.
If this article gets out to the female voters...it's over for the competition. Fred Thompson gives hope to Americans and conservatives that actually love this country. Bring it on! THOMPSON '08!
Dan, Wayne, PA
So women, apparently, will look at only two things...either they will vote for a female, cause they want a woman President or they will vote for Thompson because he's a "handsome and chivalrous" man...sigh...
Let's hope women are SMARTER than this column alludes to and instead they will actually consider qualifications, past records and political philosophies!!

Jack , Tarterus,
I used to like Rudy in '08, but I have strayed due to his liberal social viewpoints. I like Fred and I like Mitt. A Fred/Mitt ticket is the way to go for me. As far as socialism: I bust my butt. I work hard and make good money. I know others who have the brain to do it, but make the decision not too....they made the decision. I should not have to make up for their laziness and lack of motivation.
Johnny D, Detroit, Michigan
Pathetic. Don't they have any of Mr. Thompson's stands on issues to talk about? His past record (political, not acting credits). If his "legions" of ex-girlfriends are all the press is talking about, and he is the great white hope of the Republicans, this country is in worse shape than I thought.

Your comment that women will only vote for women, is a good explanation as to why a lot of the rest of the world think of Americans as being dumb.
But you and I know that isn't true ? Don't you ? Are Britons different ? Not really. Did British women only vote for Margaret Thatcher or French women only vote for Ségolene Royal? No! Give your country women some credit - they will vote for who they believe will serve them and the USA best.
Get a grip.

Ann,
He did not dump his first wife in order to be with his current one. I don't know why Fred and his first wife divorced, but he was single and dated different women for many years before he married his current wife. There is nothing wrong with that. His first wife has no problems with him, in fact, she is campaigning for him. Maybe if you re-read the article you'll get a different perspective.

It is often said that the man who retains the friendship and respect of women who have entered in and out of his life, are RARE and truly good indeed.
It is a true and endearing compliment to FRED. Many such women would remain quiet, to share it is a real positive for the many women voters in this great country of America. Remember that ladies! Truth and trust are very important in the elected.!
JC Fraser, Anchorage, AK, USA
Wow!....This is kind of scary. If he wins...do we get the actor?...the skirt chaser?..or the semi conservative politician? This guy is very camera friendly, and in these media driven times the man is going to come off very Presidential. That personna is going to get a heck of a lot of votes. And I have to admit, knowing him as a Senator, coupled with his demeanor as and actor, if hes a mix of both, hes' got my vote.
Murph, Madisonville, USA/KY
it's good to know that opening doors for women (never mind how many women) is important.
some people would suggest that honesty and consideration for others should be prerequisites for a presidential candidate and not attributes which mark a candidate out from his rivals (that, of course, is the job of policies).
still, let's just hope fred shuts the door on one particular woman.
jem, london, uk
I think it's selfish that Fred Thompson would start a new family at his age. The chances of him seeing his newborn child grow to adulthood aren't very good, especially since he has cancer. That's unfair to the child. Conversely, if this presidency thing doesn't work out, Thompson could always take the lead in a live action version of the film "Shrek." If woman find THAT attractive, I don't know why I go to the gym.

Yeah, socialism, that's EXACTLY what this country needs right? I'm just going to pretend you never said that, Paul E. I guess Ohio is closer to Canada than I thought.
I can say this. I'm a 22 year old male college student, in Austin, TX (from Houston), probably the one city in this state who CONSISTENTLY votes Democrat/anti-Republican. While many of my peers feel somehow threatened by the Republican party, I feel quite the opposite. Granted I grew up in a conservative household, but I've come to realize now that I identify with the Republican Party more and more over the past 4 years of my education, again, while immersed in the epicenter of the liberal movement of the state of Texas.
All I want is a solid candidate with a strong will and presence, and someone who focuses on the issues. Will I vote for a female someday? Can't say that I'd be opposed to it. For now, I am counting down the days until Mr. Fred Dalton Thompson officially announces his candidacy.
FDT '08!
Chris, Austin, TX,
Fluff articles like this one are the only evidence people are using in basing their support for Thompson. It shows how starved people are for a decent GOP choice in this race. Thompson finds himself in the right place at the right time, but he's no different than the rest - most likely pro-Iraq war, increase the size of government, neocon, blah blah blah. He's another Giuliani - his lobbying past should make people pause, as it will only perpetuate what is wrong with American politics. He's perfected the "Southern Gentleman" charm act, but where's the substance???
AC Green, Baltimore, MD
Hillary's paranoia and penchant for "files" and payback reminds me too much of Nixon. Everytime she pulls Bill onto the stage, I know her polls have taken a hit. Seems to be a follower, not a leader.
As for Fred, I followed his political career closely when I lived in TN, and consider him solid in his conservative credentials. I knew him as a politician before knowing him as an actor. His consistency is noteworthy. As for what his "formers" say, I think he conveys a strength and safety which many women will find comforting.
All that being said, I want a President that can force Congress to actually solve issues, and put an end to the ceaseless bickering. Is there a candidate that remembers there are people out here suffering while they concern themselves with their own power? Too much time has been wasted investigating each other... they should all be ashamed.
I think Fred, as somewhat of an outsider, has a better chance of effecting change because he steadfast.

Fred Thompson can bring all the GOP factions together under one roof like Ronald Reagan did: National Security/Low Taxes & Less Spending/Respect for Life. Rudy is great on National Security and the War on Islamofascism. He's also working with Steve Forbes on simplifying our tax code. Rudy could also make the whole Northeast and California competitive. Fred Thompson could sew up the South and Southwest and bring back the base with strong support of Border Security, the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, and Respect for Life. Besides, wouldn't you just love to see Fred debate Hillary?

the problem with your catchy little socialist mantra is that in reality there would be far more "needy" and too few able. Why should the able bother? It is better to teach a man to fish than to just hand him the fish. I am going to assume you are young. If you aren't a liberal in your youth you have no heart. If you aren't a conservative as you age you have no brain.
Susan P., Atlanta, GA
It is interesting that all that is said and written about Thompson is how he looks and smells and talks. Who cares that he is friends with his exes? Is he running for office or posting a personal ad on Match.com? What does this guy believe in? Does anyone know? This just shows how desperate the Republicans are. They are so beaten by Bush and co. that they would latch onto anyone who they think might have a chance to win. Good luck! Hillary will eat him for breakfast!
Emily, Charlotte, NC
A Thompson-Giuliani Ticket would be unbeatable.
Robert McCord, Charlotte, NC
Call me a cynic but if Fred is oh so wonderful with the ladies then why did all of those relationships he had failed? Seems to me that something is being left out of the complete picture here.
M. Boley, Richmond,
This Fred Guy, he is not exactaly Brad Pitt is he? I could understand then why all these women would then vote for him. Now if Pitt was running then I think all his fans could claim he would have the Presidency in the Bag!!!
Ken Fraiser, London, UK
Is it me or has the GOP gone soft. Your best chance is a guy who hasn't declared yet and has a legion of ex-girls who still adore him? Wow, the conservatives have it together now.
LP Doogie, Ashland, USA
This just in...
My 24 year old daughter, a liberal feminist, says that to elect Hillary would ruin things for women because of her "baggage". In her group, the consensus is that Hil has blown her chances because of Iraq, constant parsing and her inability to be independent of husband, handlers, and polls. As afraid as I was for how these 37 young women would vote, I was relieved to hear that Hillary was being scrutinized by her own and found wanting. They actually wish it were Feinstein running.
2centsworth, St. Louis, USA
I think Fred Thompson has a good chance to lead our party for the next 8 years...IF....he has the right answers on Iraq, Iran, Israel, Lebanon, immigration and most importantly cutting taxes. I'd also like to know his thoughts on the Fair Tax issue. It intrigues me and I wish more would take a good look at it. NO taxes...only consumption tax..it'd be YOUR choice. The #s are there to strengthen our economy yet what candidates are even looking at it let alone talking about it???

Finally I see someone Presidential in the race, well as soon as he signs up anyway.
I dont know if he can fix America as there are a lot of problems but so far he is the only one I can see that could.
If he can fix it then there is some very long term troubles.

When election day comes in November 2008 - and Hillary is running vs Fred for president, my vote will depend on the weather. If it happens to be a cold day in hell that Tuesday, I'll vote for Hillary - otherwise, I'm for Fred
Stan, Leonardtown, MD
It is interesting that Thompson is a candidate that can appeal to both men and women, and even remains attractive to former girlfriends and an ex-wife. Hillary Clinton, by comparison, may appeal to some women on superficial grounds, but she repels men -- to a large measure I would offer, because she represents the ultimate ex-wife.
Andy, Paoli, PA USA
The notion of Fred Thompson for VP would have NO appeal to Fred. VP slots are for people who want to be president 4 or 8 years out. That's too late for Fred particuarly when he can/will win this time. As to Fred's VP, I think it needs to be Rick Santorum. Republicans have no chance of winning NY, we might as well pick someone who could help carry Pennsylvania. Rick is a young, solid conservative with lots of experience.
Bob Barney, Wilmore, KY, USA
Let's pick Fred Thompson to inhabit the Oval Office in November '08! I can't wait for Fred to enter that first debate, seek out those power-hungry, pandering RINOs, and drop the damn Hammer on 'em!
C. Rusty Whoale, Brownstar, TX
I think a combination of Fred Thompson and Rudy (as VP) would be unbeatable. Fred will bring in the social conservatives and Rudy can be the point man for the ticket's anti-terrorism campaign (as long as he keeps his mouth shut about social issues!).

Fred 08! I am impressed with Fred Thompson - he is capable, smart, personable, and likeable. He will absolutely get the senior vote!
Bill, columbus, ohio
He might have no trouble defeating Hilary...but it won't matter. Hilary won't get the Dem's nomination, and the person who will, Mr. Barack Obama, is far more personable and charming, and far less sleazy.
Kate, Westmont, Illinois
There appears to be a perpetual misconception about California voters. The majority of the state's counties are "red", not "blue", something seen clearly when looking at the state voting map.
California is the only state to EVER recall a Democratic governor and replace him with a Republican one.
As for Thompson, I need to know more about his stance on key issues like immigration before deciding. I'd like to see a Thompson-Guilliani ticket.
One thing I do know is that I will not vote for any of the current Democratic party candidates. I recently changed my voter registration to non-partisan "Independent" since both major parties can't seem to grasp the concept of doing what American voters want them to do.
Legislation without representation, sounds familiar. Another "Tea Party" anyone?
Graciela Anobile, Loma Linda, CA
Wow were you guys reading the same article I was. It is not about voting for Hillary it is about voting for Thompson. A great choice I might add. He will win the nomination and he will win the presidency. Thank god we will have Reagan again. A true leader.
Jeff, Tupelo, MS
I know many Christians who will not vote for Rudy because of abortion. Fred seems attractive but I am waiting for the negative. None of the republicans now announces excite me. The Democrats are worse. Where is an attractive choice? Is it Fred? I hope so.
J L Grantham, Amarillo, Tx
To all of you who are putting down socialism I just have to say: Give it a chance. "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs." That's a beautiful concept, don't you agree?
If you avoid the gulag and the execution squad you can live in complete equality with all of your comrades and fellow citizens. All of life's joy's and miseries will be shared mutually and that will lead to a more cohesive community.
The wisdom of the collectivist approach to life's problems was explicitly recognized in the remarks of the honorable Senator Hillary Clinton when she said, "It takes a village to raise a child". Right-on!
The only reason that socialism didn't work in the USSR was because there were still capitalist democracies in existence. When we take the US over from within nothing will stop the establishment of a global socialist state. Then all of you selfish people will have no choice but to share your wealth with the less fortunate.
Vote Democrat in '08!
Paul E. , Dayton, Ohio
.......that's 'strong' hands not soft hands. You've already set the bar so low in your own mind you've pegged this guy a weakling. Fred is the best Republican out there...... and I'm not even a Republican. And....... there's not one Democrate who has the inner strength Fred Thompson has to carry a Presidency with strong character and solid statesmenship.
I hope Fred Thompson runs and wins........

Re: Ann M, Minneapolis, Minnesota
If you do the math, Fred divorced his first wife at age 43, 26 years after getting married at age 17. He did not remarry until 2002, when he was 59. Since there is a 16 year gap between marriages, I don't think you can claim that "this jerk dumps his first wife for a new one, 24 years younger." Sorry.
Vernon, Spokane, Washington
I am a woman, and a former Democrat. I voted for Bill twice, but I never liked Hillary, and would never vote for her. Don't you guys remember that the only reason we gave Bill a pass on having affairs was because we looked at his wife and decided we couldn't blame him? She didn't represent me then and she won't now. I would love to see a woman win the election, just not her, EVER. I don't trust her, and I am amazed that some people think she will win with women just because she has a vagina and her last name is Clinton. Even Bill doesn't like her, we have seen clear evidence of that. How stupid does she think women are if that is what she is counting on? She isn't a feminist, or she wouldn't need Bill to win. On her own, she's nothing but another crooked politician.
Alexandra G, Austin, TX, Travis
I think Fred Thompson is our only hope in the 08' campaign. He is a breath of fresh air and a light for us at the end of the tunnel.
He has my vote, no second thoughts, he just has it! He already is very presidental looking and I sincerely believe that what he says, he means, and what he means, he says with honesty.
Go Fred and pack your bags for the White House, because you are going to make it there.
God Bless America
God Bless our Troops
And God Bless the next president of the USA....Fred Thompson

the last smooth president with a way with the women ended up with Monica-Gate and the USA a global laughing stock! Do you need this again America?
Graham, London, uk
Some people need to read thoroughly before commenting, and making incorrect statements. I don't think FT has been twice divorced, only once and now married for the second time. For those who say they don't know much about his policies or plans, simply hasn't taken the time to find them. They are out there. And character DOES matter!

"This jerk dumps his first wife for a new one, 24 years younger.
Among the millions of middle and older aged females who can identify with his first wife, this guy is going nowhere.
Ann M, Minneapolis, Minnesota"
Ann, hon, you need to work on your reading comprehension. He was single thoughout the 90's. He was divorced for about a decade before he remarried.
bmcelrath, CONCORD, NC
Ann M - Where in this article does it say that Fred Thompson "dump[ed] his first wife for a new one, 24 years younger"? Before you go making statements like that, you'd better make sure you go back and read the article again one more time.
Yes, he was married to his first wife 26 years, and yes, his second wife is 24 years younger than him, but NOWHERE in this article does it say he dump #1 for #2. In fact, it said that he dated a few different women (I counted at least three, not including the current Mrs. Thompson) before he remarried in 2002.
Mike, Abingdon, MD
Ann M - 17 years passed between the time Fred & his first wife divorced and he remarried - -17 YEARS! I'd hardly call that dumping one for the other. And neither you nor I know who divorced who or why. If you would just read the article, you'd know he was single for a long time, and that his first wife will campaign for him
KayVee, San Diego,
Ya know, I have been looking closely for negatives about my choice for Rudy Guliani. After finding out about Fred Thompsons ability to keep ex's happy just makes up my mind. Still no negatives against Guliani-but a definite "two thumbs up" for Fred Thompson. As a twice divorced man, I know he must be something special to dispel anymosity from all these women.
Fred in 08 thanks,
badfinger, carriere, Mississippi
Its time that America proofs in reality that "All men are created equal" here in America. Its time we proof every American can dream about becoming a president when he or she grows up. Its time that we elect a man who is not white or a woman. Its time we change the white house and make it an American house. My vote will be for Hilary, Gov. Robinson, and or Obama.
Abdul, Seattle, WA
To: Ann M. in Minneapolis -
The articel did not say or imply that Thompson dumped his first wife for someone younger. He married his first wife at 17, they divorced 26 yrs. later when he was 43. After being single for 16 years, he re-married at age 59. How did you read the article about women he dated during the years after he divorced (and was again single) and come to the conclusion he left his first wife for someone younger?
John Wingfield, Kirkland, WA
I, for one, am very interested in Fred Thompson running for President. I would be very, very interested in a Fred Thompson/JC Watts team running. THAT would be sweet!

RezDuane, Bloomfield, NM
Fred Thompson has not even declared yet. We know so very little about his policies and plans, that its silly to back him at this point. The fact that Sen. Fred has soft hands and delicate lips might mean that I'd love for him to date my mother, but does very little to convince me that he can run the country. Give this guy some time. He might grab 20 or so percent in Nevada, but I guarantee you that his ship will sink once we know more about him.
R, Lawrence, Kansas
He take the thunder from the mountain!
He steal the lightnin' from the sky!

You bettah hidey-hidey-hide!
'Cause Ol' Fred's down the road!
Wanda, Cold Spring, USA, Texas
I think the nomination and the presidency are Fred's to win, provided he wants it badly enough.
Another thing I've been pondering - how tall is Hillary? You put a guy who's 6'6 on a stage with a lady (to use the term loosely) who I'm guessing is 5'8 or less, and it's only too obvious who has the more commanding, presidential stature. My guess is Hillary will insist on having a step or will wear some big heels.
We know she has to have everything her way, so this will be interesting to see. I don't feel she should be permitted to artificially heighten. It's false advertizing and if the people prefer a tall guy, no matter how superficial that is, that's just the way it goes.
Git in there Freddy! Squeenter has you back!
Squeenter Squillo, Westbrook, CT, USA
Sorry. This is a hit piece. Divorced. Womanizer. Empty. Ex-Senator. (Dims got the better of him in the Clinton impeachment investigation--two week limit--my god! They just ran out the clock.) Another JFK, LBJ, WJC, etc. I'm voting for him, of course.
J, sik, usa/mo
As for Thompson, his persona has both gravitas and charm, and he seems to have an excellent grasp of the issues. But his health is of great concern to me. Regardless of my reservations, if it were a Hillary Clinton vs Fred Thompson match-up I'd crawl over broken glass on my knees to vote for him.
As for all women "who vote" voting for Hillary, 'tain't true. I'm a woman who votes in every election - it's my duty as a citizen . What would make me consider voting for Hillary? If the candidate running against Hillary was Satan, I 'd have to consider voting for Hillary, but only then. And I'd have to hold my nose.

Ross,
Every candidate during the run feels they would not want to accept the VP position. That's human nature, but then later once the nominee is chosen some reality sets in, and it's very rare that anyone actually refuses the VP slot if offered. In fact, I can't think of any example of that actually happening. No doubt it has, but it's very rare.
So even though neither wants the VP slot now, look for either Rudy or Fred to accept it if the other one wins the nomination and offers it to the other.
i won't be the least bit surprised if the ticket ends up being Fred/Rudy or Rudy/Fred - either of which will get my vote over Hillary/Anyone.
Joey, Manhattan, NY
You have to be kidding. Not every women will vote for Hillary. In fact I don't know one. Not every women likes her. I find her just plain vulgar. But, if we get her it will be what our country deserves.
May God help us.

My wife says she would never vote for Hillary and I know several other women who won't either, so don't generalize the women's votes by saying they will all vote for Hillary.
Mark H, Winfield, WV
More women will vote against Hillary (like the French election showed us). Its not a nationality thing, its a human thing. The line in this article explains it perfectly:
Morgan remembers encouraging Thompson to run for president when they were together. âI think he has a great chance of capturing the womenâs vote. Heâs majestic. Heâs a soft, safe place to be and that could be Fredâs ticket. Women love a soft place to lay and a strong pair of hands to hold us,â she said.
Unless Hillary can give off this vibe she will never get a vote from the real women of America.
President FDT in 2008 - get used to it.
Ryan, Syracuse, New York
I'm conservative, and the Democrat candidates all seem to lean toward Socialism. Who wants a Socialist President of America? It would no longer be America. That being said, all the talk about Fred Thompson's dating prowess while in his 50s doesn't interest me in the least, although I'm happy to know that he stuck with his first wife for 26 years after marrying at a very young age, and that they are still on very good terms. I'm also impressed that he has re-married and has a small child at the age of 64. This country is crying out for a man of maturity with conservative principles. The Democrats don't offer that. Despite past history, they STILL want higher taxes, primarily on the small-business owners and corporations that do the hiring in this country. They simply don't get it. We need a President who is tough on terrorism and illegal immigration, and who trusts Americans enough to tax them minimally and shrink the size of government.
Scott, St Louis, MO
I have never given money to a political campaign, but when Thompson enters the race, it will become the first time I will help a candidate monetarily. We need a person of his character to run this country. You can bet he will win the state of Ohio.
Roy B, Harrison, Ohio
Hell no, not all us women will vote for Hillary! Obama or Paul has got my vote!
Nunu, Chicago,
I agree with Suzie... I am a woman and would NEVER vote for Hillary. Quite honestly I would never vote for Thompson either. I don't want someone who is smooth with the women.. as this article so aptly pointed out. I believe we have already seen that quality in Bill Clinton and I hope this country learned it's lesson on that score last time! I am looking for a candidate that is hard working, intelligent and stands on his values. My vote right now is with Romney.
Jody, Arlington, TX
To : Jerry from AZ
Hillary will not win just because women will vote for women.
Why don't we just say women will vote for the best looking...Mitt wins..older women vote their age group...McCain wins...Southern woman...lets see... Fred isn't that cute but neither is Edwards...
tough call
liz, denver, co
Oh Jerry, you couldn't be more wrong. I wouldn't vote for Hillary if she were the only one running! I would however vote for a competent female over a male, one who won't take us into socialism. And, how about a Thompson/Romney ticket? Sounds pretty good to me.
Debra A., Ninilchik, AK
Not every woman will vote for Hillary I can think of three or four or perhapse a hundred that won't. Bill wasn't so kind when dumping exgirlfreinds.
Ken Hughes , Waterford TWP, Mi
Thompson is saying all the right things. A republican that's comfortable in front of a camera is a formidable candidate. His smoothness will highlight Clinton's shrillness. If the guy runs, he'll win. Oh, and Marti, "preferably both"? Might want to reread your statements before submitting them.
Curt M, Santa Rosa, California
Oh, Jerry Scroggin, how wrong you are! Not that I am at all opposed to a woman in the White House, I emphatically state not THAT woman! Oh...and I am a female who votes!
Kelli, Columbus, Ohio
If fat balding middle aged men is what women want, then kudos to them. The rest of the us will vote for someone with character, principle and not tied to the Bush oligarchy.
But B movie stars have succeeded before, just look at Reagan. His acting career proceeded well into his presidency.
Kamal Johnson, Houston , Texas
All I can say is... PRESIDENT FRED THOMPSON certainly does sound good! I'm ready for an adult. He's an adult. He has maturity, is a diplomat, the charisma that's been talked about is pure from his heart. That's hardly something we've been used to in years and years. We've been used to handlers, rather than adults not playing any games. I just feel a relief when I think about it. So that's my fantasy!!!
We've got adult problems in this world, that are very complicated, but an adult sees the bottom line, and can see through what's drama and what's politics, and go for the solutions.
Margie, Wimberley, TX
Try a Thompson-Giuliani ticket, Senator Thompson I don't think is looking for a chance to run as the second man, he's going to be the front man in any campaign involving him as a candidate.
Rob, Pittsburgh, USA
Wait a minute.
This jerk dumps his first wife for a new one, 24 years younger.
Among the millions of middle and older aged females who can identify with his first wife, this guy is going nowhere.
Ann M, Minneapolis, Minnesota
Looks like Rhett Butler vs. Lady McBeth. Thompson comes off as genteel, acerbic and very comfortable in his shoes. Dame Billary have always parsed their words, polled, and dragged twenty dollar bills through trailer parks for fifteen years in the national spotlight. When it comes down to brass tacks, people voted for Bush b/c he seemed to be a man of his word and will do the same for either Guiliani or Thompson, whichever should win the Republican nomination. Think ahead to the debates! Thompson/ Guiliani against Obama/Clinton. The dynamics of stage presence alone are exciting to think about.
Daniel Glenn, Boaz, AL, USA
Thompson would not settle for VP. Mitt Romney is more likely to take VP if he doesn't get the nomination.
But I would prefer to see Fred Thompson and Newt Gingrich as the ticket, then it'll be all over for the democrats.
Jason, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States
I don't know who will win, but I do know that Jerry Scroggin doesn't know women.
Louella, Winder, NM
I can't believe anyone would believe a woman would vote for another woman just to get one in the White House. That is incredibly shallow of someone to even believe that would happen. I would never vote for Hillary because I don't believe she has the character necessary to have that high office. I'm afraid she would step on anyone to get what she wants.
I'm not totally sold on Fred Thompson but I'm not totally sold on any of them yet. His charm is something that makes me leery, because I don't want to just be charmed by someone and no know whether they are truly qualified. I 'm clueless that people term someone who speaks truth as being "mean" (Rudy) but that someone who never tells the truth as being inspiring. Go figure. Must be the Midwesterner in me. Glad there's a long time until the election (can't believe I said that--all that time to hear campaign stories...shudder!)
Trina Johnson, Bismarck, USA / ND
Mrs Clinton won't win no matter who runs against her. I personally would like to see a Fred - Mitt ticket or a Mitt - Fred ticket, either way it would be great
Pat, Kure Beach, NC
Fred is as close to Reagan as we are going to get. On top of that, he's very electable. He will win the south and challenge well in the more conservative battleground states.
I don't think Rudy can win all of the South against Clinton. If she wins one southern state, the Republican candidate is done.
One thing is for certain, everything is blue from PA and above in the east. Michigan and Illinois will swing blue. The peoples republic of California isn't even a contest. That means the Republican has to win almost everything else in play. Not an easy task.
Mike, Lewistown, PA, USA
I am a female and while i would love to see a women president in my lifetime, i would NEVER vote for Hillary. The thought of her in the white house terrifies me. As far as Fred and Rudy go I love them both! I still don't know which one i would vote for. But its gonna be heartache when I'm forced to choose!
Suze, Texas, USA,
There are about two dozen women of voting age in my church, and not a single one of them would vote for Hillary, even if they were paid. Thompson would be far more likely to get their support.
Greg Barnes, Springfield, Missouri

How does a Giulliani-Thompson ticket sound?.As a former New yorker, Rudy was the best mayor ever, always kept his word , likes control. Fred would smoothe out some of Rudy's"meaness" and he is very folksy and charming. Actually, I think they are both charmers.I would like this ticket very much.

Fred is the best chance the Republicans have to stave off the twin disasters of another Clinton presidency. Go Fred!
Michael Llewellyn, Barbados,
It is often said that the men who retain the friendship and respect of women who have entered in and out of his life, are RARE and truly good indeed.
It is a true and endearing compliment to FRED. Many such women would remain quiet, to share it is positive for the many women voters in this great country of America. Remember that ladies!
