A suicide attempt by the Wedding Crashers co-star Owen Wilson cast a shadow yesterday over the film career of the loveable Hollywood rascal.
Wilson, known for his long blond locks, pleaded for privacy after being taken to hospital in Santa Monica on Sunday. He had reportedly slit his wrist and taken drugs.
“I respectfully ask that the media allow me to receive care and heal in private during this difficult time,” the actor and Oscar-nominated screenwriter said in a statement from his hospital bed, where he was listed as being in good condition.
A police log listed the reason for the emergency call from Wilson’s house as “attempt suicide”, appearing to confirm reports that the actor tried to kill himself.
The actors Samuel L. Jackson and Woody Harrelson and the basketball player Magic Johnson visited the hospital in Los Angeles, where Wilson was expected to remain under observation for two or three more days. He has reportedly undergone detoxification and surgery to his wrist.
Wilson, 38, one of three Texas-born brothers who became Hollywood actors, has become a bankable star with a string of box-office successes. His highest-grossing film was Wedding Crashers (2005), which grossed $285 million (£140 million), in which he and Vince Vaughn played two men who turn up at weddings uninvited to meet women.
He also starred in the romantic comedy You, Me, and Dupree (2006) as a man who moves into his best friend’s home and causes turmoil in his marriage, and played opposite Ben Stiller in the 2004 big-screen adaptation of the 1970s television series Starsky and Hutch.
Wilson also earned an Oscar nomination as the screenwriter for The Royal Tenenbaums (2002), a quirky comedy about a dysfunctional family, with his long-time friend, the director Wes Anderson.
Wilson’s hospitalisation cast doubt on his roles in two new films as well as his ability to promote two forthcoming releases; The Darjeeling Limited, due to premiere at the Venice Film Festival next week, and Drillbit Taylor, which is due out in March. His publicist said that he had completed his promotional duties for The Darjeeling Limited.
The Ben Stiller-directed Tropic Thunder, a comedy about a group of actors who go on location to shoot a war movie and find themselves in the midst of real-life conflict, is being filmed in Hawaii. DreamWorks Pictures refused to say whether Wilson’s part would be recast.
He was also due to appear opposite Jennifer Aniston in the comedy Marley & Me, an adaptation of John Grogan’s memoir about a mischievous labrador retriever.
A spokesman for 20th Century Fox told the Hollywood trade paper Daily Variety that “it’s a totally inappropriate question at this time” whether he would appear in the film.
Wilson was taken to hospital at noon on Sunday after an ambulance was called to his home in Santa Monica.
The police and hospital officials refused to give more details of the incident but celebrity magazines and websites said that he had cut his wrist and taken drugs in an apparent suicide attempt.
The celebrity television show Extra said he was found by his younger brother, Luke.
Wilson was later transferred from St John’s Hospital in Santa Monica to a celebrity unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles.
Wilson has a reputation as a party animal and has been linked to several famous women, including Demi Moore and Sheryl Crow.
He appeared to have been leading a quieter life since breaking up with Kate Hudson, the actress who worked alongside Wilson on You, Me, and Dupree, in May, and was seen on a yacht in the Mediterranean this month.
Hudson was photographed with her new boyfriend, Dax Shepard, in a grocery shop in Malibu on the same day that Wilson was admitted to hospital.
The New York Post reported yesterday that the suicide attempt followed a bitter quarrel with a close friend. The newspaper said that Wilson had a history of depression, and that the actor’s break-up with the Hudson had not contributed to his suicide attempt. “It’s very upsetting. People are complicated. It’s not just one thing,” a friend told the Post.

You are talented, and funny. Don't let this get the better of you. Stay strong! You have many people who love and support you. Get well soon.
becca, england,
Owen my thoughts are with you at this difficult time. Please remember that you are loved by alot of people. You are so talented, you make alot of people smile (especialy me). I know life carries its ups and downs and sometimes its hard but try to believe in yourself, you are strong, and if we believe in ourselves we can get through the difficult times. Remember your family and friends do love you very much and as a dedicated fan I can honestly say its a pleasure to see you on my screen. So you get well soon, stay strong and come back to us with a smile. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Take care,
Helen Bache, West Midlands, England
As an avid fan, I have had my life enriched by your talents. Hate to see you are hurting so much. Not even the person closest to you can know the hidden private moments of your heart and mind. Let no-one have the power to take them away from you. Talk to those who you trusts to help you heal when the time is right, you will know. You are the master of your mind and heart, guard them as treasures hidden deep with in you, dig deep for them when you need them. You will know, how to be yourself again in time. As I read from a previous fan, lean on us, and know it is with sencerity we await you return; in what ever capicity you wish. We all know the intent of the press. They are truly the weaker, trying to gain the power thru' knowledge of others peoples pain.
If I were there, I would close my eyes, just hold your hand, tell you to breathe, and pray that you would stop hurting so much inside.
As a professional L.M.T. let me remind you of the power of touch.

I really hope Owen gets better soon! I suffer from depression and there is light at the end of the tunnel. I am sure he will be soon on set xx
Alison Horn, Harrogate, North Yorkshire
My prayers and good wishes are with Owen and his family. I hope that he rebounds from this and can take something positive from this experience. I have always really liked this man and his brother Luke--they just seem like people you'd like to hang around with and be neighbors with, you know? Down to earth, good folks....
Anyway, we're all praying for you Owen.
Take care.
Jurny, Eden , NC
Owen your an excellent actor, I love all your movies you ever made. I know your are going through tough time, but I know that you will pull through, you have great brothers who loves you and cares about you. Hey there is thousands of woman who would like to be your girlfriend, so take one day at a time and you will get back on your feet.
Thinking of you
Joanne , Ottawa, Canada
Dear Owen,
When you are released from hospital. Take your millions of dollars and venture out of your world and into ours. Find a poor family and anonamously give them a home. Pay some medical bids for others. Making others feel good, when you can make yourself , will give you a new view on the distorted world you must live in. When the money runs out , you will have atleast made a true difference, instead of giving up as you have done.
Carlo, Orleans, Ontario
Amazing the number of people on here who think money = happiness. Happiness is metaphysical. It can't be bought. Those who are suggesting that Mr Wilson "toughen up", or that he "should be" happy because he "has money and a lifestyle millions would envy" (no thanks), have clearly never suffered from depression, otherwise they would show more compassion and understanding. And as for living in paradise - well, one man's idea of paradise is another's idea of hell, Sonia. It's all relative.
N Butler, London, UK
Every day there are millions of starving kids in Africa suffering both physical and mental anguish about something as simple as getting water to drink or food to eat. For Owen Wilson to attempt to take his own life is akin to showing these children a huge banquet of food and drink that you have been given to eat, and then setting fire to it. It is the deepest insult.
David, Kent,
Women are like buses a new comes along every 20 minutes. Hang in there. This is not something worth dying for. I willkeep you in my prayers.

Now back to your own boring lives, Americans.

It is sad to hear that Owen Wilson fell that far. I don't think anyone can understand the place he is at unless the individual has attempted suicide themselves. It makes me sick that anyone would even try to speculate the reason in which Owen would try to take his own life. In all honesty, it is no elses business but his and his families as to why he felt so desperate. I simply hope that he gets better, becomes strong again and truely makes himself happy.
Dana C., San Diego, California/USA
It is a shame that he has to do the drugs and slice his wrist for a women that is not with him anymore, life has so much more to offer than that....he is a very young talented man and love to see him in his movies I hope that he gets the help that he needs and one of the greatest help he can get is by prayer. God Bless You...
kat, Phoenix,
`A big hug and lots of love to Owen. From personal experience I can say that you can come out of this state and enjoy life once more, it is not easy but you can do it, be kind to yourself and try not to let it beat you. I'm still struggling but I am here, when five years ago all I wanted was oblivion.
Depression is a foul condition, I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. All those who say grow up, get a life, pull yourself together etc, really don't understand how tortured a mind can be under depression. Some of the most brilliant, successful, wealthy and popular people of all time have suffered from depression - it respects no-one. and can affect anyone. So give this poor man a break, he needs support and love-just because he is a celeb doesnt mean he cant be a vulnerable human being too.

You are a dear, dear man with many things to do while on this earth. Do not let a small dip in your journey set you off course. Love yourself just half as much as others love you and you will survive and thrive, There is sadness and joy in your eyes. Let joy guide you. You have a gift, let it work for you as it has for others. A little time for yourself is the best gift you can receive. Thank you for giving me joy in my life, please do the some for yourself... just another human being trying to make it in this world.
S carman, WOODINVILLE, Wa
I love the way in the twentieth century people still don't understand depression. How many times do people need to say it before others understand...it's an illness, just like any other, it just manifests itself in a way that can be interpreted as different things. Having been close to someone who became increasingly manic, and having lost a good friend to suicide through the same illness I just hope Wilson finds a) an empathetic doctor and b) is supported by family and friends who don't care about his celebrity status, just have the patience to help him get well.
Elfin, Liverpool, UK
To Sonia, Albert, Hemnebob and others who think that Owen Wilson isn't grateful for what he has - Gratitude has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with depression. Depression isn't just the feeling that you're having a bad day, or you're 'down' because your surfboard broke or your favorite dress got ruined. Depression is a very scary thing when going through it - feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, persistent negative feelings of yourself, guilt; you cry and cry and then, after a while, you literally can't cry any more; you feel oddly empty inside and remote. Depression can be brought on by the loss of someone close, great stress, physical problems like anemia, thyroid problems, etc. Excessive alcohol consumption can contribute to both anemia and stress. And, with Mr. Wilson's work schedule, stress is obviously a huge factor of his life. Owen, I pray for you to heal and that your life and your heart are filled with peace and contentment.
Julie, Jacksonville, FL, USA
Best wishes to Owen Wilson. He's brought much laughter into my home. I am sure he is in good hands and will get the care he needs right now.
Hope to see you on screen soon big guy.
andy, manchester,
Ulla - I agree, too many people are handed anti-depressants and told to get over it. This doesn't solve the problem, it just sweeps it under the carpet until it can't be contained any more. It would be much better for patients to undergo counselling to try to solve the underlying problem(s). Not all cases of depression are a hormone imbalance that can be corrected by medication.
Cally, Southampton, UK
Owen, I hope you're feeling better soon.....you have brought me and my friends many laughs. I hope you can feel care free and happy soon, sending lots of love....mindy

I think he is a terrific actor.. been a fan since i saw the films he made with jackie chan
robert williamson, muston,
So sad. I have felt suicidal in the past but always thought about the people who love me and how they would feel if I died. I think it is time that the world woke up to the fact that depression is commonplace and that there should be more opportunities for people to receive counselling rather than just being expected to swallow antidepressants thus blotting all the feelings out. We are emotional beings not machines! All the best to you Owen. Get someone to talk to about how you feel. You are not alone.
Ulla Carlisle, London, UK
My thoughts and prayers are with you Owen. I hope that you will get well soon and return to the big screen again with yet another one of your fabulous movies. You bring alot of joy and laughter into many peoples lives and I sure hope you will continue to. Do not feel alone, as you are very loved and adored for who you are.

All good wishes to Owen. I hope Owen gets all the best help and support at this time. He's made a lot of people laugh in his films and he too deserves his share of happiness on Earth.

Sonia,
You obviously have no idea what someone (even a famous person with great wealth) with depression goes through. I have worked most of my life with severely depressed individuals, some with money, most without, and it makes no difference acrosss the board. It is an illness that cannot be helped, leave the man alone, be proud of who you are and what you have accomplished and live your life, not talk about someone else who has problems. It could happen to anyone you know, and in fact you probably do know someone who is clinically depressed and you do not even know it.// TO OWEN WILSON, we are all hoping you get well soon and do what you need to do to get well, not everyone is uncaring and callous.
GET WELL SOON,
Tomas DeLeon, Orlando, USA, Florida
Fame has a high price. Nobody but he really knows all the troubles in his life. Just because he is rich and dates famous women and appears funny on screen doesn't mean he is by any means a happy person. I wish the best for him, though.
Em, San Diego,
I feel great sadness that someone who brings laughter to people feels so alone and depressed. My thoughts are with his family and friends. I only hope that Owen gets all the help and support he needs and is left alone to heal, with the privacy and respect that is needed in these situations. He has wonderful talents as a writer and actor. Please do not give up, you are greatly respected and loved.

Adrienne Buckson, Baltimore, Maryland
I think it is a shame that people don't believe that successful people with alot of money can get depressed, sad, and hopeless. They seem to think if you have money and fame that everything should be wonderful. I feel bad for anyone who is so down and discouraged that they want to die. I love Owen Wilson as an actor, he is funny and so appealing, I hope he gets the help he needs to heal.
Ruth, Waterville, Me
Such a shame that such a beautiful and talented gentleman should feel so alone, I think its a good idea that press have released this story, if only so that we can tell Owen how much he means to us.
Liz Hobbs, Chard, UK
Sorry to hear of your troubles Owen. But proves to everyone that we all have good and bad times. The common person or the famous, we are just human. You are very respected and cared about. Get what you need to go forward, and be able to smile with the rest of us when we see you on the big or small screen.

Sadly all to often suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem
Just goes to show that humans are capable of feeling hopeless and vulnerable despite what to the outside world looks like fabuolous and unmitigated success in life

This goes to prtove money can't buy happiness. This man lives in paradise compared to the common folk! And instead of rejoicing his good fortune...he feels helpless!!! Hollywood will never make sense!! There is nothing in the world that would makwe me take my life or even attempt it. I have raised 3 children single handdly...and believe me times were hard. I have loved and been rejected, cheated, lied to. I'm still standing with no more than $30.00 dollars in the bank! Grow up!! Thank the world for your success. Dust yourself off....keep going!

To Mr. O. Wilson:
I hope you are feeling better and get well soon. Life on this planet is more interesting with you here. You appear to be a talented fellow and at the least your family and friends need and appreciate you. No shame in feeling down. . . No shame . . . hang in there, get well, and God Bless you. . . JRA
Joe, Southern California, USA
Healing will be difficult, especially under the scrutiny of the press. But the lonliness of doing it alone can be equally so. Take the fans' interest as sincere, and use it as support. Good luck to you. This doesn't mean you are weak, but human.
Pat, Indiana
Pat, Jeffersonville, Indiana
I hope he gets the privacy he wants and needs to get better. It shouldn't be speculated about in the press why he did it, there could be all kinds of private reasons. I wish the press would just leave people alone when they are clearly not well, it hardly helps the situation to have this publicity.
Claire, London,
Please Allow him the privacy and time to heal. He may not have the wherewithall that people are suggesting that he meant to take his own life, things may have just gotten overwhelming and he needed time to himself and just didn't see any other alternative at the time... everyone makes mistakes... make no judgement calls,as this isn't your call to make.
