ONE of the twin daughters of President George W Bush has spoken of the heartbreak she feels about the Iraq war and the criticism of her father. “He is a totally different person to me than what they portray him as,” said Jenna Bush. “I mean, he’s my dad.”
The party girl who stuck her tongue out at reporters and was charged with underage drinking publishes a book this week called Ana’s Story, about an HIV-positive teenage mother whom she encountered on her travels in Central America with Unicef.
She said she had met Ana and her baby in Panama, where the young woman had declared: “We are survivors.”
Jenna, 25, who is known as the “blonde one” of the Bush twins, has found her sober side. Asked about Unicef’s report that 4m Iraqis had fled their homes since the invasion of Iraq, she said: “Nobody wants war. I definitely, and my father doesn’t want war. But it’s a horribly complicated situation.” She added: “I can say it’s devastating . . . I think everybody can agree on that . . . Obviously, all of this breaks my heart.”
Among the experiences that affected her deeply was visiting wounded veterans of the war with her father. “I’ve gone with him to Walter Reed hospital and I’ve seen his face after he’s left the hospital. He would have to be inhuman not to feel it. I mean, of course things weigh on him. Of course they do.”
Matt Damon, the actor, once suggested the Bush daughters should serve in Iraq, but according to Jenna, it would put too many people in danger. “I hope that I serve by being a teacher,” she said. She worked at a Washington primary school after college.
Jenna is now engaged to Henry Hager, a former White House aide. He proposed to her after a 90-minute hike up a mountain in Maine.
“I did not want to go hiking at 4am in the morning,” she said. “But we got up, and we hiked in the dark . . . and then when we got to the top, with the sunrise, he asked me.”
She remains close to her sister Barbara – “We’ve gone through every single thing together, you know, from the womb on” – and mother Laura Bush, who helped to correct her drafts.
“Former librarian and schoolteacher,” said the first lady of her involvement in the book. “I couldn’t help it.”
Robert Barnett, the lawyer and agent who acts for Tony Blair and Alan Greenspan, the former chairman of the Federal Reserve, helped Jenna to find a publisher. Profits from the book will go to Unicef.
Ana’s Story offers advice to teenagers about avoiding HIV, which mentions abstinence but says the best way is to “be faithful to your partner and use a condom every time”.

Well, young lady, it seems that you have missed a great deal of what "YOUR DAD" has wrecked upon this poor old world of ours, and my only remark to you is that "just being YOUR DAD" will in no way mitigate the CRIMES, GREAT AND SMALL, that HE HAS COMMITTED, and continues to commit on a daily basis!
Get used to the idea that the day will come when "YOUR DAD" will stand before the bar of ULTIMATE JUSTICE and will answer for what he has done, whether YOU LIKE IT OR NOT!
Sidney S. Keith, Eagle,
no, Jenna- what is heartbreaking is the tens of thousands of Iraqi's who have been killed. The tens of thousands whose lives have forever been altered. The numerous Iraqi refugees who have no home anymore. The many women who have been forced into prostitution to support their families. THAT is heartbreaking. All because your father started this war.
Dawn, Denver, CO
Jenna Bush's "heartbreak" over the war neither moves nor impresses me. Her father gave up his status as a private person when he decided to run for President. He gave up any claim to sympathetic treatment by the press or the publican when he declared himself "The Decider." I don't expect her to disagree with his policies in public, but to assert that teaching first grade in Washington is even remotely the same kind of service as the troops in Iraq is the height of Bush arrogance and myopia. Gramma Bush (Barbara) proclaims after Katrina that those folks were poor and didn't have much to lose. "Things weigh on him," indeed. Apparently not heavily enough or he would stop ignoring the facts in pursuit of his wishes.
Paula Callaghan, Philadelphia, PA, USA
Jenna will not serve in the war because it will put too many people in danger. The War has put too many people in danger including the people of the United States and the people in the Middle East. No one should be in this war because it will put too many people in danger not just Jenna.
Sheryl Skoglund, Minneapolis, USA/Minnesota
Hey Jenna, go have another beer, you spoiled brat. You father is the worst thing that has ever happened to our country. You aren't in the army because you are concerned about putting yourself in danger...period.
Nathan, Jackson , Tennessee
The your father to stop killing other people's children.
kspena, Tacoma,
You are all pathetic- Jenna does not have a chance with all of the bleeding heart libera;s out there.
God help us if Hillary of barak get in office
helene, philadelphia, pa
I don t know what Saddam Hussein s daughters names were but they would say the same about their father. We need to be more adult about this situation. George Bush can clearly handle the criticism about his war policy. If he has any personal reservations about the war, what he can t obviously handle is the Washington interests which brought about the whole situation. If the President needs any protection it is in this context. He should not have the power to declare war because in any rational consideration he is unqualified to do so, and the mess in Iraq is evidence for this point.
Henry Percy, London, UK
This is an article about an author and her experiences. The comments about her father are mainly "get it out of the way" background because its inevitable that people will ask about it, despite its irrelevance to the topic. That being said, speaking of earlier comments about giving Jenna a quarter to whine to someone who cares..... why not save your commentary for the appropriate forum instead of just blathering on everywhere you can? All you're succeeding in doing is creating a boy-who-cries-wolf cloud that follows you around and diminishes your argument into a mere constant hum like the irritating but ignorable buzz of a mosquito.
Jen, philadelphia, pa
Yeah, the BTK killer was a dad too.

"Bush has discarded habeas corpus and the Geneva Conventions, justified torture and secret trials, damned critics as anti-American, and is responsible, according to Information Clearing House, for over one million deaths of Iraqi civilians, which puts Bush high on the list of mass murderers of all time." The comments so far beautifully illustrate the deep compassion liberals take such pride in. Just beautiful.

I'm reminded of a character from a Japanese novel, The Twelve Kingdoms. Shokei is a princess who lived in luxury and ignorance while her father brutally executed thousands of his subjects in the name of pursuing order and his twisted idea of justice. After his assassination she's left alive to bear the hatred of her country for her passivity and willful ignorance.
Zolodoco, Omaha,
Your decider father asked for the position and has earned the criticism. You can't have it both ways. The people of this nation, not to mention the planet, are far more important than you, your father, and your family.
No pity here.
Collielady, Farmington Hills, MI
Clearly George Bush is not qualified to be president. However its is equaly clear that anyoe qualified that acquired the position would be kiled "literally" by corporate America post haste.
GI JOE, Altlanta, Georgia
You do not have to defend your father for what he has done to protect this great nation. He is a man, guided by certain values that stood up to terrorism when this nation was attacked. We have not had another attack on our soil since 911. We can win this. I remember in his State of the Union address to the nation after 911 when he said that we as a nation will have to BE PATIENT in the fight against terrorism.
We are proud of your father!
Madeline McCurley, Tyler, USA/TX
Jenna of course sees a different side to her father from the one we see. We must however judge him by his policies, and we certainly shouldn't "leave him alone" - if he'd wanted to be left alone, he shouldn't have run for president. And if he doesn't want war, why is there one - nobody but him started the war in Iraq.
It saddens me, though, to see Jenna attacked herself. Of course she wants to defend her father, and of course she has had a privileged upbringing. This is not her fault. When she does something wrong on her own account (and no, underage drinking doesn't count) I'll condemn her. Until then she should be left alone.
David Clinton, Hamilton, Scotland
Perhaps if her father wasn't such a blathering idiot and incompetent fool, we wouldn' t HAVE to pick on her daddy.
I'll send Jenna a quarter so she can call and whine to someone who cares.
Veronica Feinstein, Stamford, CT
Jenna, can we talk? I'm proud of you, standing up for your dad. As the father of three daughters, I'd want my girls to stick up for me. Good for you.
That said, Jenna...your dad has done terrible things. He's been personally responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people, all because he was too dumb or too arrogant to understand certain things. Nobody forced him to run for president; he could have stayed in Crawford, lived off your family's money, and cooked steaks for you and your fiance whenever you came to visit. But he chose to run for president, and honestly dear...he was never qualified by temperament or intellect to be president. He made the choice, and the American people have suffered ever since. That's the truth, Jenna.
Robert Lockwood Mills, Sun City Center, FL
I'm disgusted by the treatment of Ms. Bush in the (American) press -- round after round of 'exclusive' interviews, designed to do nothing more than provide testimonials to George Bush's sweetness and caring and humanity... from a so-obviously unbiased source.
Who cares what Jena Bush does? The United States of America has been reduced in spirit and in fact by the greed and religious pomposity of Bush and Cheney. People are dying in a war in Iraq **that never had to be fought**, because Jena's father is a liar, and worse -- and a new war is about to start, simply because Herr Bush is the 'Chooser' and the 'Decider'.
And, relative to what her father is responsible for, we're supposed to care about any news regarding this young daughter of Power?
Just more insult to injury, isn't it?
Ted, Oakland, California USA
Jena Bush is no different then Paris Hilton, why anyone would hold her or her blindered viewpoints in any higher regard is simply hypocritical.
Democracy is like a string, you can't push it at the end of a gun, it must be pulled by desire. Not that democracy has anything to do with why the U.S. is occupying Iraq.
Stanley, St Louis, MO
My heart bleeds for you Jenna and your dear old daddy---NOT! My heart does bleed for the fallen in a make believe war that your dear old daddy started to prove to his dear old daddy that he was a bigger man than he was. They both failed miserably.
DonnaBelle, Macomb, Illinois
I agree with most of the posts I read today, her father is the worst president that ever lived and he should be impeached with his side kick Cheney. He stated that he would keep this war going untill the next man took over the office, and "let him contend with the problem".
He tells the worst lies in all the world.
And Jenna, is only on TV to sell the book she has written, shall NOT read that one.
To Jenna I bet it was really wonderful to hear that you could not join up for the armed forces, because "it would cause too much of a problem" I thought that it was only princes that waited for someone to say that, really his grandmother would not have let him go, OH! did your boyfriend sign up for the army yet, or would daddy veto that?????.
Your daddy was in the reserves, but never finished his tour (Bushie Bashing, I really do not care, at least this is the truth) he decided that running a campaign was much better than being in the reserves.
Elizabeth, Simi Valley, America
I'll leave your dad alone when he and his ilk leave this world alone!!!!! He doesn't give a damn about any of the soldiers he's sentenced to either death or permanent pain.
Bill, Windsor Locks, CT
Bush is a war criminal, and having his daughter trotted out as the voice of humanity is as disgusting as Laura Bush saying she cares about the women in Afghanistan. Their support for genocide and nuclear warfare (google "depleted uranium") and the slaughtering of millions of civilians makes them as bad as the fascist Decider in the White House.
Anne Johnson, Cedar Falls, USA/Iowa
Quick, someone call the WAHmbulance, fast!
Mick Savage, Boston, MA
Sorry Jenna, but your dad is a war criminal. Why don't you talk with him, he does not listen to the rest of us.
george monroe, Dallas, TX
I just have to respond to Julie from Vietnam. The people you support do not believe what you believe. They believe in war but they do not believe in going to war. NONE of the neo-cons that serve in the Bush administration served. Bush -no. Cheney - five deferments "I had had other things to do" was his famous quote. Rumsfeld - no. Wolfowitz - no. None of them served although they all vocally supported the war and the draft. It is ridiculous for you to assume that we have not traveled the world simply because we do not agree with your support of the war. I have traveled and I have seen war, extreme poverty, and soldiers with machine guns ready to crack heads. I know what we have in this country. I also know that this country is not innocent - that evil, corrupt men have manipulated the misinformed in order to further their goal of enriching their pocketbooks. Bush is destroying the rights you cherish as quickly as he can and any person that dissents is labeled un-American.
Jaime Orduño, San Francisco, California USA
Some of the soldiers in Iraq think they are defending us back home, but they are not, they are in reality defending the lies of the Bush administration. Iraq NEVER posed a terrorist threat to the United States before the U.S. invaded and destroyed that country's infrastructure. And now nearly 1 million Iraqis have died, who would still be alive today if it was not for this spoiled brat's ignoramus of a father. Yes, I'm sure all those dead Iraqis feel very helped by all the nice U.S. soldiers, and even though they are dead they are surely enjoying this new freedom.
Jason, Galveston, Texas
There are lots of sweet girls in Iraq and Afganistan and now Iran without her future...lots of dictator wannabees have childrern and that is unfortunate for the children unless they refuse to examine the parent's behavior. The greatest gift she can give her father is to develope some intellectual discrimination, something that seems to be sorely lacking in her family. Oh yeah and to let go of an elevated sense of intitlement and greed. Did her future husband serve in Iraq or the military, I thought not.
progressive type, fairfield, CT
Jenna, go join the army and fight in Iraq. After you spend a few months/years there then come back and tell us about how nice you dad is.
Andrea, Houston, USA
yes, she sounds sincere and Jenna's comments are heartfelt, but her father sent soldiers into harm's way and they came back in boxes and maimed, injured.
On a lie....they were sent to war on a lie that he never rectified. He wants more blood more casualties.
Katherine Kensington from maryland said the reason is tackling terrorism, but we know that terrorism is a global problem and thus should be tackled with a global coalition since the world stands to gain , but her father is no diplomat and a lousy leader who can't do either and US soldiers die

Pat, I don't dispute that we must fight to protect our own liberty, but what has that got to do with the war we launched on Iraq? And Julie of San Diego incorrectly credits Bush with supporting the war to support her native country, Vietnam. He dodged the draft during that war.
Patrick, San Francisco,
Did any of you hate mongers read what Julie from San Diego said? You are the cry babies that are ruining this country! Democracy is fought and died for. We did not get here without the blood sweat and tears of our forefathers!!
Pat, Statford, CT
Jenna should not have to suffer the sins of her father. However, the man she has chosen for marriage is a political hack for her father's administration. So that speaks volumes about her ideology, and where she stands on her father's policies.
Sorry, Jenna. It is not enough to simply "keep sweet."
Robin, Weston, FL
All of the negative comments make me ill. Jenna Bush sounds like a good girl, someone who loves her Father. It is unfortunate that the same people who talk of peace use such ugly, negative words towards another human being. The cost of war is great, human lives are lost "for" those of us for whom they are defending. I have known many people who have served in the millitary through this war. Many are there because they see the strategy in tackling terrorism. Of those whom I know they have many positive stories of helping the Iraqis, where true kindness and understanding has taken place. This war has so much more going on than the "doom and gloom" media likes to report on. At the end of the day I pray for the leaders of this country and for our troops and for the Iraqi people.
katherine, kensington, Maryland
Poor little rich girl, Jena Bush. The nuts don't fall far from this tree - she ignores reality just like dear ol' dad.
Darryl, Columbus, Ohio
Sorry Jenna, but you are feeling but an iota of the pain your father has inflicted on the United States, Iraq and Afghanistan. None of it was necessary or can be justified, even through your sorrow. Where is Bush's' sorrow? He continues to justify his mistakes (crimes?) and continues an untenable war. Bush has set the world back for decades to come.
Gus Smith, Phoenix, USA/ AZ
Horribly complicated, devastating, heartbreaking? With propaganda like that we'll never achieve our right-around-the-corner victory in Iraq. Shame on you, Jenna!
T Bingda, North Carolina, USA
Bush destroyed America's standing in the world, looted our national treasury, turned his back on Katrina, led us into failed wars...and you want us to forget about it cause he's your dad?
LOL

I am from Vietnam. I thank America everyday for allowing my family and I to be here. I think of the American GIs that fought for me and my rights in a land where there weren't any. Americans don't understand what it takes to give them the freedoms they are born with and have taken for granted. Do you think you've always had freedoms? Many have died in this land to give it to us. Thank you Mr. President for standing up for my country, the USA and not allowing the polls to dictate your beliefs. I have a 5 yr. old son and my proudest moment would be if he decides to defend this country one day so that our freedom continues. You've never known what it is like NOT to be able to speak out against your govt. This forum is our freedom in action. In many other countries (including Vietnam) soldiers would be at your door right now to take you away for disagreeing with your govt. Travel more, live elsewhere, then return to the USA and understand what you have is not the norm.
Julie , san diego, USA
I think that Jenna Bush needs to understand that there will always be a lot of people who believe that there is a lot for which her father must answer. I am one of them.
But children will always struggle with determining how to properly view their parents. And Jenna Bush is comparatively speaking, quite young. Is it not likely the view of her father will change, perhaps, as she ages?
And before you expect her to magically wield some sort of leverage over her father, or claim that paternal sin should be visited upon the daughter, you might want to read the Oedipus cycle, and in particular, Antigone.
There are plenty of people who could sign up tomorrow and fight for, and alongside, those who have volunteered. Who benefits from the absence of a draft? Only Jenna Bush? What stops you and me from going down to the recruiting office?
Jeff, Durham, NC
You've gone with him to Walter Reed and seen his face? Ummm, those soldiers whom he has "feelings for" are there precisely because your father put them there. A million people in the middle east are DEAD because of your daddy. I feel sorry for you, but your father deserves all the scorn that the world can heap upon him.
neeta, Northern, CA
No, Jenna. We won't leave your dad alone. He's the worst president America has ever had and he waged a war of aggression against an innocent people. He's pilfering the treasury and destroying once solid govt. agencies. He is a bad man and he has done very bad things.
We reserve our tears for people that deserve them.
Incognita, Amarillo, TX
so she actually WANTED to join the military-but was concerned for others safety, so she didn't? R-I-I-I-G-H-T.
why doesn't Laura correct her husband's speeches?
Olive, DC,
Bush is only brave enough to send someone else's children to die. When he had the chance to fight in a war that he supported, he opted out. His father used his connections to move little Bush ahead of about 100,000 men to join a Texas National Guard unit that had absolutely no chance of fighting. (They used obsolete planes.) My uncle volunteered to become a US Army paratrooper and died in Vietnam. There are 250 people in my family. None of us will ever vote Republican. They are disgusting cowards and hypocrites that believe only the poor should die for our country. If we send Jenna to Iraq, the war would end tomorrow. It also disgusts me that Jenna Bush is exploiting this Central American woman to improve her image. If she actually cared about human life, she would be at her papa's knee begging him to bring our brothers and sisters home. I check the newspaper everyday to see if one of my friends has died in Iraq. Does she?
Jaime Orduño, San Francisco, California USA
Tell your Dad to stop false wars or get over there yourself!
Sandra, USA, USA
Jenna came across and terribly insincere during the Diane Sawyer interview. She has no depth to her. She's self-centered, elitist, and bigoted (like her father). I seriously doubt any of the proceeds will go to charity. I think she also made up the story about Ana. No self-respecting Latin girl would open herself up to a total stranger, especially not a non-latin one.
Busty, NYC, USA
W wanted war, Downing Street memos and Spanish transcripts prove that. I can agree that the war is devastating, but its her daddy's fault. We all reach the stage in life when we realize that our parents are human. Unfortunately hers is inhuman.

I am in no doubt that President Bush is as best a father that he can be to his children and also that he has a private side.
However, the world would be a different place if he had only chosen the career of simply being a house husband instead of being let loose on the world's stage in the hideous theatre of war and performing that part with such grave consequences, not even giving the slightest thought to the written script but merely improvising the "shock and awe" as he goes along.
