THE environmental campaigner Al Gore is being tipped as a favourite to win the Nobel peace prize in Oslo this Friday in a controversial move that could place saving the planet above saving people from war and conflict.
Gore, a former American vice-president and failed presidential candidate, has reinvented himself as the “Goracle” with a rock star following after presenting last year’s Oscar-winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth, about the dangers of climate change.
He was nominated for the Nobel prize jointly with Sheila Watt-Cloutier, a Canadian Inuit activist who has campaigned about the effect of climate change on Arctic peoples.
“A prerequisite for winning the Nobel peace prize is making a difference and Al Gore has made a difference,” said Boerge Brende, a former Norwegian environment minister who nominated Gore and Watt-Cloutier.
“I think they are likely winners this year,” said Stein Toennesson, director of Oslo’s International Peace Research Institute. The winner will receive $1.5m (£750,000) in prize money.
Gore spent last year assessing whether he ought to run for the White House in 2008, teasing his supporters by saying, “I haven’t completely ruled it out”, and prompting observers to keep a close eye on his girth for signs that he was slimming for a presidential bid.
Some commentators in America, including the British writer Christopher Hitchens, believe he could use a Nobel win to challenge Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination.
“Can he stand to watch another Clinton walk away with a nomination that could have been, or could still be, his?” Hitchens asked. Close supporters believe the answer is yes. Gore appears to have concluded that the Democrats are satisfied with their candidates.

Global temperatures will rise 2.5C within the next century even if the world hits its targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, according to the scientist leading research into the issue.
Consequences could include widespread starvation, as farm yields fall 50% in parts of Africa, water shortages for 300m and the destruction of 20-30% of species. If targets are missed the rise could reach 4C.
Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, issued his warning in London last week.
“We have come to the conclusion that global warming is unequivocal,” he said. “What is particularly worrying is that it is accelerating.”
Big Al, if he wins, will join the ranks of Arafat the Terrorist, and Jimmy Carter who was conned by the N. Koreans (but Jimmy never gave back the Nobel money). I can still remember when we took the Nobel Peace Prize seriously. Not now.
Dr. Lee Cary. , Mayhill, NM, USA
It's in the bag for the "Goracle". It is what the liberal media wants, and they usually get what they want.
Tony, Houston, TX/USA
Global warming isn't a problem. People forget that plants and wildlife grow best when there's an abundance of carbon dioxide, and the temperatures are hotter. If we want to feed the world, maybe we should dump some more greenhouse gases, to heat everything up a little, and provide more arable farmland. Oh, and it also increases the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere, increasing rain.
Matt Mahoney, Phoenix,
Sorry. Mankind is not causing global warming. I KNOW this because of the crowd that is touting its truth.
Anyone care to meet me 10 years from now and explain why this issue disappears round 2011? (if that long)
NONE of you folks that believe this is so DIRE will be even willing to discuss it once it is out of vogue with those in power.
I know. sit down. shut up .. and believe what you are told.
Yes ma'am.
kent, warren, il
Gore and Kucinich....Yay!!!!!
Dorothy Baker, New York, NY
Gore would not need a Nobel Peace Prize to be able to challenge Hillary. I'm fairly sure all he would have to do would be to announce he was running and Hillary supporters would desert her in droves. I would love to see Gore run. My dream team would be Gore/Kucinich.
Kate Henry, Corvallis, Oregon
Jeremy Clarkson summed up Al Gore perfectly when he said
"Here is a man so hopeless that he was beaten to the White House by George W Bush"
jay, Luton, Herts
Except that is a lie. Al Gore won the election. George Bush was appointed to the Presidency by five activist supreme court judges.

Cathal,
Regarding Aung San Suu Kyi's Nobel Peace Prize, even a stopped clock is right once a day. If the Nobel committee awards Burma's Buddhist clergy this year, which is highly doubtful, it would make the stopped clock right twice a day.
And regarding Jimmy Carter and his value as an election monitor, please cosider the case of Chavez and Venezuela.
J. Zeigler, Greenfield, Indiana, USA
Jon of Iowa -- Copernicus was the first to publish the theory that the Earth revolved around the sun. Galileo, who was born merely a couple decades after Copernicus published his heliocentric view, promoted the same idea rather vocally.
In other words, you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
James, Portland, Oregon
I'm not sure if Al Gore is the most worthy candidate for the Nobel prize or not. But I do find it interesting how so many commentators on these blogs now say "human created global warming is a myth" when not so long ago they were saying "global warming is a myth". A step forward in understanding at least.
Alex Ritchie, Salisbury, UK
The debate on global warming is NOT over.
Carlton, Phoenix, USA
Right Kevin - And George Bush is a great president - just saying it doesn't make it so.
I don't need a dem or rep to tell me something is true or not - just look around you, if you cannot see that things are changing for the worst - than you need to have your eyes examined.
Dizzy, Merrimack, USA/New Hampshire
Gore is the epitome of an environmental hypocrite. He should practice what he preaches. Hidden agendas and people who do not study the real effect of global warming are at fault if he wins. If Gore manages to win the Nobel, the Nobel Foundation will lose the reputation it is known for. Shame that now it seems any brainless, money-hungry person could win such a fantastic prize.
A. Hender , Charlotte, NC
Jon from Des Moines, read up on history before making totally false statements regarding Galileo - he died of natural causes (read: old age) at his own home after being released by the church. Spouting falsehoods rarely is helpful when discussing issues, especially when, in Galileo's case the record is so clear.
Bill Arnett, Concord, CA
This is an abomination. A nobel prize? I suppose that the honor does not mean what it used to. Practice what you preach Al!
William Peters, Northampton, MA
Is it not obvious to anyone with a pulse that man made global warming is a political sham? Yes, global warming occurs, about every 500 years if you look at the record.
Why are people so willing to give up their freedom, power and money to government that they are even willing to do it for an obviously false pretense? Sheep of the world, wake up!
Kevin Durst, Dunnellon, Florida, USA
Not sure why you say giving Gore the Nobel would put saving the planet before saving people. The effects of GW are predicted to cause wide-spread starvation and water shortages - which means people will die. Preventing war and preventing GW have the same outcome - saving lives.
And for the GW denialists - get a clue, the debate about whether it's happening and what is causing it is over. Get over it!
petewsh61, Sunderland, MA, US
This will just make him even more priggish.
John, Ascot, Berkshire
I'd say Gore has a great shot. It seems like the surest way to win a Grammy, Oscar, Emmy or Pulitzer is to be a staunch liberal partisan. Why should the Nobel Prize be any different?
Mike, atlanta, ga,
So you just ignore the many scientists who validate the idea of gw with overwhelming evidence and choose to listen to the ones who are in the pockets of the oil companies and big business. Yeah, what HAS happened to our society. That's what truly should make a person sick.
KD, Chicago, IL
Perhaps we should nominate Copernicus --he had the policital buy in on his theory for hundreds of years until Galileo proved him wrong. Then Galileo was killed after he was found guilty of heresy for not agreeing with what was already a 'scientific consensus' of the church. But hey, that was in the archaic middle ages when people were uneducated and life was much more barbaric.
Wait a minute, that seems really similar to today's situation? I thought we had gotten smarter over the past 500 years? Maybe not.
Jon, Des Moines, Iowa
Al Gore is such a hypocrite. He bought a huge 7,000 sq ft house which uses an amazing amount of energy, he drives big SUVs, he takes a private jet, and generally uses more energy than the average American. Then he has the gall to tell Americans we need to change our lifestyle and conserve energy. If he thinks it's so critical, why doesn't he? He will say that he buys carbon offsets, which are not an option for the rest of us who work for a living. Basically, he is unwilling to change his lifestyle and practice what he preaches, and that in my mind is the best evidence that he knows this global warming hype is all a sham.
Joe, Dayton, Ohio
This is just incredibly stupid! There's so much political crap going on in this whole situation that it makes me sick!! There are many scientists that say all this is a bunch of hooey............so now he gets a nobel prize for it? What's happening to our society?? This just makes me sick to my stomach!
Julie B., Waverly, Ohio/USA
If Gore had any scientific education he would know he should listen to both sides. I studied science and received PhD years ago. I know enough to listen to all sides, not even just two. He only listens to those he wants to hear from. Global temps up and down have been documented for millenia. How can Gore explain the shrinking of the solar ice caps on Mars or the warming of Plutos' satellite - I suppose we caused that as well!
Gordon, Taos, NM
No one know the optimum tempurature for the planet, but we all know the optimum temperature for Algore is room temperature.
Rick, New York,
Yasser Arafat was a Nobel Peace prize winner. Mahatma Gandhi was not. It just isn't a very credible process.
Tim, Richmond, VA
Why didn't Ronald Reagan win the prize then? No one had more to do with ending the Cold War, without firing a shot, than Reagan. I would think preventing a nuclear winter would trump global warming.
J. McNeer, Richmond, VA, USa
I say give him the prize...it may just be the moment of glory that pops his fat head. And we will have to hear from him no more! Small price to pay.
Jay, Minnesota/USA
Jay, Bemidji, MN./USA
The man is acutely aware of the global climate situation. He works hard to stay on top of all the details of the latest research. Most of his detractors don't. He is putting solar panels on his house, and offsets his carbon usage by buying green credits in alternative energy generation sites and elsewhere.
I've seen him talk in person, and find him to be intelligent, sensitive, and connected to others. He does not speak in sound bites, but in complete coherent paragraphs. I like listening to paragraphs. He seems to be in favor of discussing ideas, and arriving at a higher level of understanding rather than scoring points.
The Nobel Peace Prize would be a fitting tribute to this noble human. The presidency would give him the better pedestal from which to effect changes in our society. We as a society are better off for near prophets like Al Gore.

Human caused global warming is a myth. Al Gore is riding the crest of wave of falsehood manufactured by "environmentalists" who who stay in business and line their pockets with our tax dollars. Wake up and smell the bank accounts folks. I hear he also invented the internet.
The Peace Prize should go to someone who is instrumental in bringing about change for the better, not someone, like Gore, who re-invents himself depending on which way the wind is blowing. What a joke.
Mark, Jacksonville, FL
I am not surprised with the potential win of Al Gore for his work with the environmental issues involving Global Warming. It only makes sense that we all do our parts as individuals to make a difference in protecting our environment.
It is imperative that we all do our part on protecting the environment instead of allowing it to be continually depleted. It is important that we all try to keep 'politics' out of the Nobel Prize arena and focus on those things that have made individuals worthy of such nomination.
In regards to our Enviornment, let us each ask ourselves each day: What have I done today, to build a better world for tomorrow? Let us not trivialize the inconsequential, but let us lift up others who have gone far and beyond reasonable expectations in their desire to change the world that we live in today; and even more so, the world that will be here in the tomorrows that shall surely come. Congratulations on all the Nobel Prize Nominee's!
Stephen Adams, Salt Lake City, Utah USA
Canada's David Suzuki has done much more about Global warming and environmental initiatives than Al Gore can ever dream of. BUT, Al Gore had the eyes and ears of the US and eventually the World. If you don't beleive in Global Warming, come spend a year in Canada and compare daily temperatures to historical ones. GLOBAL WARMING IS REAL, and it is happening NOW! You can also go to theweathernetwork.ca, choose the city Ottawa, and do your comparison there (the histirical figures are under "sun and normals" link on the left navigation bar).
George, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada,
When Gore is all we got to nominate, it shows how low we are all over the world for leaders.
Dump science fed to the masses by a second rate VP is the new low.
Pal, Bellevue,
I just hope Rush Limbaugh doesn't win. I'm afraid it would hurt his reputation.
Conrad Driussi, ridgecrest, CA
I hope he gets it, and then I hope he runs for president. He may be our best (only) hope.
Mollie Wilkie, Albuquerque, NM
Gore should decline the award. Why would anyone want to share an honor that once went to Arafat?
Dave Fortay, Manchester, England
No mention of Rush Limbaugh's nomination, I see...
John, Sacramento, CA, USA
A supremely confounded argument such as man-made global warming gives rise to a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. A more obvious example: the CO2 curve Mr. Gore uses in his movie is measured at Mauna Loa, a dormant volcano. Just across Volcano National Park, however, is Mt Kilauea, an active volcano getting more so over the last several decades. How much of this measurement is due to coal plants in China, and how much is due to Kilauea?
DV, Wichita, KS, USA
If Al Gore wins a Nobel Peace Prize for his sham of a documentary, it will tarnish the award for years to come. No one should ever win an award for a misguided, manipulation of facts that preys upon the fears of the masses (unless its some crap award from Hollywood, then who cares).
We should still push for cleaner waters, soils and air, but we should do this in the name of a better Earth, not in the name of some media fueled hysteria that the world will be laughing at in 20 years.
When all the hoopla is over and people realize that Gore's statements of fact are grossly misguided, and in many cases flat out false, will people abandon the "Green Movement"? Will they stop buying hybrid cars and building green buildings? If they're doing all of this in the name of Global Warming, then why shouldn't they?
Be environmentally conscious for the sake of the environment, not because Al Gore says its getting warm.
Ryan, Nashville, TN
If global warming is seriously caused by human activity, why is it that only about half of scientists agree with this? Last time I checked, Gore wasn't a scientist... although he did invent the internet.
Maybe they should give him the prize for that.
Matt, Raleigh, NC
Usually Nobel prizes are awarded for "scientific" efforts. Gore's whole premise on global warming has no basis in science and is pure politics. He has used his hypothesis to generate an income stream for his tree-planting company. If he does get the prize, then it will lower the prize to the level of bobby prize.
Ken R., Las Vegas, NV
Let's assume that global warming is 100% real and will destroy the world if we don't "Do something" about it immediately. How is Al Gore qualified to get a PEACE PRIZE for bringing us to this revelation? It's like the Nobel Committee has decided that genocide is trivial compared to the earth's warming trends.
Joseph, Charlotte, USA/North Carolina
The peace prize has become a joke over the last 30 yrs. It is no more significant than the Oscar for the fictional documentary
Mark Hall, Albuquerque, NM
It is sad to find that man worships the dirt under his feet and Honors those amoung themselves who blithly extol the salvation of this orb above teh care of the people who reside upon it.
The Noble was for people who DID something to promote Peace amoung people, not peace with muver earph. The Invention of Dynamite was the inspiration for the Noble Peace Prize, NOT the salvation of the darter snail of rock clusters. Rich Idle people make me ill.
Terry, Pryor , okla
If the earths climate continues to warm, as it has done since the last ice age had 3,000 feet of ice over Chicago, some areas of the world will gain much improved weather for growing crops. Areas like Russia, China, Canada, and others. That never seems to get mentioned.
Dave, Geneva, USA / IL
Thirty -odd years ago we had globaloney cooling; at that time the young scientist Dr. Hansen performed the necessary calculations. His remedies at the time included immediate government interventions - among them sending bombers with soot to cover polar ice so that new glaciers would not swallow New York. This same Dr. Hansen of NASA is the main honcho of globaloney warming. You know - if at first you don't succeed, try again!
Marc Jeric, Ph.D,
Marc Jeric, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
There are much better documentaries out there on global warming, and there are scientists who have spent their lifetime working on this problem. Yet, this man, with a documentary full of inaccuracies is going to receive the Nobel Prize based on that film?
James B., Atlanta, USA
FLOODING OCEAN-FRONT PROPERTY FOR SALE?
When all the Hollywood stars, producers, and directors sell their ocean-front property for cheap prices and move much further in-land -- then, I will believe what they believe --- "man is creating global warming and that the world is really in trouble".
John, Lee's Summit, MO/USA
Science is about creating hypothesis and then doing tests to disprove the hypothesis. With global warming, the hypothesis is out there, but there are not real scientific tests to disprove it. There is extensive data to support either side of this debate, and anyone who claims that "the debate is over" is not interested in true science.
If Al Gore is nominated for a Nobel prize on something that is "conjecture" (rather than strong theory that has been thoroughly tested by the scientific method) and the conjecture is later shown to be false, then the Nobel prize will have lost all meaning for all who have received one.
RDHood, Dahlonega, GA
We have cab drivers in most major cities that are part of sleeper cells, they are taking God out of and off of most everything in the public domain and re placing it with Alah...and all you hand wringers can worry about is global warming?? Pathetic Sheeple...Can someone please answer this question. If there was no evil man on this planet....if it were uninhabited...what would the temp be right now...BINGO..!! the same...unbelievable...

Good for Al. Hope he wins.
I love Jeff who says "How about some concrete proof." This, of course, comes from the same people who believe in creationism.
Mike, New York, New York,
Did Jimmy Carter win his Nobel before or after he managed to get the dictator Hugo chavez elected?
Jim, Mound, Mn
Its just surreal how a politician who couldn't even win his home state of Tennessee in 2000 would come in and win a Nobel Peace prize by re-inventing science based on consensus. How can this be? I'll say this one last time, "There is no consensus in science." Just like Carter winning this prize for supposedly preventing Korea from getting nukes, this will also contribute to dumbing down the purpose of this prize. Congrats to Gore nonetheless, but geeze.
SoonerJJ, Norman, OK
Wow, lot of rage here isn't there. Whatever people think of Gore or his stance on global warming, I certainly feel that the Peace Prize is taking an unjustified beating. Some of the greatest figures of the last century have been awarded the honour.
For J. Zeigler, Indiana, the democratically-elected leader of Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi, was awarded the prize in 1991 for her tireless efforts to topple the country's military junta. How much credibility did the committee lose with that selection?
For those who point to Arafat and Carter as evidence of the supposed tarnishing of the prize, Arafat was JOINTLY given the prize with Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin at a time when peace between Israel and Palestine was tantalisingly close. If the prize elongated that peace by even one day, it was a victory. President Carter's work as an election monitor helped foster freedom and democracy in many parts of Africa and Asia.
Deride the winners if you like, but not the prize.
Cathal , Tipperary, Ireland
The prize money would hardly put a dent in the fuel bill for his private jet travel
Chris, Gridley, U.S.A. / Ca.
I find it ridiculous that someone who flies around with just a few of his staff in something that introduces many harmful pollutants into our atmosphere could be nominated. The main portion of his followers are wealthy movie stars who stand on their soap boxes while they drive around in huge limos carrying only them and their staff. How many of these people carpool? How many drive cars like a Prius? I believe that most average Americans see the real picture. People like Gore are opportunists trying to cash in on the world's pain. None of them do the real work and wouldn't inconvenience themselves to put in a low emission light bulb let alone do the real work necessary to save this planet. Gore and all you unrealistic movie stars......PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH!!
Jeanne Chapman Groth, Clovis, USA CA
"The list on Tuesday put Gore as the favourite ahead of Poland's Irena Sendler, who saved more than 2,500 Jewish children from the Holocaust in World War Two, and Finland's former President Martti Ahtisaari in third place." This is sick. Can anyone name one person Algore has saved? How does one accept an award in the face of a person who has legitimately saved peoples lives?
Andrew, Raleigh, NC

Manuc, Buenos Aires, Argentina
I would never think of putting a response in your column, but I read a couple of the statements of my countrymen and felt compelled to respond. I think Al Gore is by far the most qualified person in the United States to be President. He is intelligent, well-read, experienced, level-headed and courageous. He has been 100% right about every major issue confronted by our country over the last decade or more, most especially about global warming, the Debacle in the Desert, and the dangers of the shredding of the U.S. Constitution by our "Unitary Executive." He would never have been taken in by the neoconservative idiots who have, apparently, seized control of our government, along with the Republican Party. I would consider it a great honor to vote for Al Gore for President.
Ed Szewczyk, Granite City, USA/Illinois
Hey Curtis, I'd have to agree with you very well. It's all about fear. The bible ( that these liberals say they believe in ) tell us that GOD created the world with the words of His mouth. So i guess guys like Al Gore believe we're like God that we can uncreate the earth by destroying it as the say we are doing it. Think about what i just wrote, ponder it for a while.
Jeffrey S Stratton, Indianapolis, Indiana
Yes, it's the same Nobel Peace prize that was awarded in 2005 to the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for their efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons. Yet they had no clue that Iran had hidden its nuclear program from them for 20 years! I guess it's hard to leave the first class hotels in 3rd world countries to go and do your job. After Arafat was awarded a Nobel prize their value diminished to nothing for me. Just another political tool for those currently in favor.
David, Philadelphia, USA
If Al Gore was serious about Global Warming, which I doubt he truly is, then he would subsidize ticket sales to "An Inconvenient Truth" and give away his book for free. If he were truly concerned with anthropogenic global warming, he'd be doing everything possible to get his message out at the lowest cost to the consumer possible while drastically cutting his own energy consumption.
Well, he isn't. Instead, he's making millions profiting on the backs of the gullible who have neither the science education, the statistical reasoning faculties, or the ability to discern scientific fact from fiction. There is simply nothing more to Al Gore than the age old desire to profiteer from scare mongering. This is the World's second oldest profession (third if you count politics, fourth if you count garbage collection).
What a maroon. What an embarassment to the United States.
Scott, Durham, NC, USA
Well, since 1998, no increase in global temperatures. A little decline. Yes, it is very true as one writer said, CO2 has never in history caused a temperature rise. If you are going to say all that will change and for the first time it will cause such, you have a big burden of proof. With temperatures going down over the last ten years, I'd say the burden has not been met in any way.
Mike Cregan, Santa Barbara, USA
Please, people. There are many good books about global warming (try "The Skeptical Enviornmentalist" and "Unstoppable Global Warming...Every 1500 Years") but Gore's movie isn't based on reality or facts. It makes for dramatic theater but is just plain silly for anyone who has bothered to research the information past the sound bites.
Joanna, Philadelphia, USA
Dear World,
Don't judge US citizens for what J, Cleveland, OH says, we are not all closed minded and label people based on what website links to news articles.
Global warming is a problem for those who don't understand cyclic temperature changes the earth has endured for eons. If this is backward thinking then I guess label me a nutty right-wing folk...
And for the record, most of us didn't like Gore.
Andy, tonganoxie, ks
You say "He (Gore) was nominated for the Nobel prize jointly with Sheila Watt-Cloutier, a Canadian Inuit activist who has campaigned about the effect of climate change on Arctic peoples."
But you failed to mention that Radio Commentator Rush Limbaugh was also nominated. Is it possible you "forgot" to mention this because it does not fit your liberal template?
We shall hope that that if Mr Gore wins he does challenge Mrs Clinton...and the fight in the Democrat party breaks it up. Or, at least is very fun to watch.
Lawrence J Greenwalt, Columbus, USA/ Ohio
It was only a few years ago that "Day After Tomorrow" came out and the very same alarmist who are screaming about global warming were arguing that USA could freeze over like in the movie.
Buster, Los Angeles,
CO2 is not a pollutant. There would be no life on Earth, as we know it, without CO2. The current political battle boils down to the basic issue: "Does CO2 cause global warming?"
My answer is no; which negates all other arguments, since humans are incapable of controlling any natural occurring climate change. There is no past historical scientific factual evidence and/or records that link CO2 as a forcing factor or a cause of an increasing temperature rise climate warming period.
There is scientific proxy evidence/data from past climate periods that reveal CO2 levels about 18 times greater than the CO2 levels present today; which were concurrent with non-rising temperatures equivalent of those present today. Some of the more recent proxy scientific data also reveals that CO2 levels LAG temperature increases by 800-2000 years; which is the equiv of 11-76 human geneations.
An abrupt short period climate shift to cooling would certainly would put a stop this global warming hysteria.
H Maier, Lynden, USA/WA
Is this the same Nobel Peace Prize that was awarded to Palestinian terrorist Yasser Arafat, economy-wrecking Jimmy Carter, and Oil-For-Food Kofi Annan? Yes. Oh well, this seems about right then.
Curtis, Orlando, USA/Florida
Al Gore is an embarassment to most Americans. Even those of us who once supported him now see him as a little kooky. It seems that he never recovered emotionally from his defeat at the hands of Bush. He is now trying to find legitimacy by being the pied piper of global warming. The fact is, his 'Inconvenient truth' was largely fiction. He claims to speak for all scientists while at the same time mocking any scientist who rejects his point of view. The reality is that Gore stands to make millions by selling his stupid carbon credits to his legion of Kool-ade drinkers. As always - follow the money trail!
ken armstrong, houston, Pennsylvania
Not all who read Drudge are "right wing nuts" as some of you put it. And I wonder if you were on the global cooling bandwagon a few years ago. You may like Al Gore and thats fine, but most honest people will admit that his movie contains far more fiction and exaggeration than solid sience. Yes he temp has warmed slightly, it has happened repeatedly over time. My state was partially covered by a glacier at one point. Be honest people...
TB, Wallingford, ct
Dear World(of which, I assume Brittain is a part and it doesn't have to be re-stated--from my semi-literate perspective):
Al Gore is a documented prevaricator, not unlike other documentarians like Michael Moore. It is good to see that Brittain has required a disclaimer before the showing of an "Inconvenient Truth", because of the Documentary's flexibility with the facts. Climate change? Well I hope so, there are four seasons. Anthropogenic? Not even on our most populated summer day. Scare, scare, scare.....and not a bit of intellectual honesty in the group. In ten years we will wonder about something else....ever learning, but never arriving at a knowledge of the truth.
Dave, Pleasanton , California, USA
What a nightmare - Gore cannot create Peace in his own country, much less the world. I think he is more likely to win the Nobel for his crazy Math and convincing a few diehards (Turner, etc.) to believe him.
Jeff G, Atlanta, GA
We need to stop:

Protecting Mother Earth, is all about the Green.

Diane, Gore did not win the election. Have you heard of the Electoral College? The U.S has been electing presidents this was for over 200 years. Gore is not the first to win the popular vote and still lose the election.
Global warming is real...nobody is denying that. What people disagree with is the extent of human impact on warming and if money might be better spent on such problems as malaria and AIDS.
Steven Douglas, Seongnam, South Korea
Conservative talk show host, Rush Limbaugh is more deserving of the award for his tireless efforts to encourage freedom and self reliance.
Dan, Anchorage, AK
"I don't hear anything about his (Limbaugh's) contributions for society."
I don't imagine you would in your circle, Frank. Rush preaches individua liberty and individual responsibility. When people are liberated and empowered to provide for their own prosperity, society benefits from increased prosperity and lower burdens.
Dan, Anchorage, AK
I guess protecting the earth requires a little 'faith'... I'd think that would come easy to all you right-wing religious zealots. Especially since we have a little more evidence of global warming over whether or not your God exists.
Wouldn't it make sense to take precautions, just in case?
JD, Mexico City, Mexico
Al Gore winning the Nobel Peace Prize?? That like Bill Clinton winning the "Father of the Year" award. Al Gore should get back on his coporate jet and fly home to his huge mansion and let someone really deserving win it.
Peter, NY, NY,
I have nothing against Gore and welcome his activities but the Peace Nobel Price ought to be an acknowledgment of longterm personal dedication of relatively unknown individuals who make a real difference despite their meagre possibilities, often at risk of their social status or even life. Rich, high-profile politicians in Western countries don't really fit in that pattern.
However, since dubious people like Arafat and Kissinger (among others) have been awarded, the price is rather devalued and mostly a political statement by now.
Matt, Wuerzburg, Germany
Al Gore is not a "failed presidential candidate." He won that election. It was the country that lost due, in part, to some very shady circumstances. And now look where we are. If he ran again, and I still hope he will, he will get my vote in a New York minute.
Diane Stamm, Washington, DC
The world has gone completely mad. Please let me wake up and realise that this is just a horrible nightmare.
Peter Lloyd, BLACKER HILL, South Yorkshire
Dear World,
Please don't judge all US citizens by the comments here. This news article was linked to by the Drudge Report, a site popular with nutty right-wing folks. That's why all the comments are so backward. We're not all like this -- in fact, the majority of us realize that global warming is a problem. Most of us like Gore too.

To all the people of Britain and the world: The predominant number of semi-literate and downright ignorant posters here have come from a link on the Drudge Report, a right-wing "news" source and shill for the Bush administration. This sad lot is all to happy to regurgitate the radical right wing talking-points of "junk science," "what about the new Ice Age," "scare tactics," and so forth. I fully apoligize for the blind stupidity on exhibit, and implore you to know that these crude, braid-dead sods are not representative of the greater number of Americans who believe that certain behaviors of 6.7+ billion people can, in scientific fact, alter the natural balance and meterologic patterns of the Earth's delicate eco-and climatological systems. Al Gore's work is fully deserving of the Nobel honor, and tragically, he is without question the best president we never had.
Turner, Los Angeles, California
I've lost all respect for the Nobel committee. It appears that science, fact, hard work, and dedication are no longer criteria for the award. Looks like the Nobel is worth no more than the Oscar or Emmy. Same popularity contest and if you hit on some lame issue you're sure to win.
Robert, Rocky Mount, USA/ North Carolina
If he wins the Nobel then the it will only tarnish the image of the Nobel and anyone who wins in the future will be just as questionable. Scientists and other devote their lives to research whereas Al Gore is not a scientist and has either used junk science or misinterpreted real science to fit his political agenda. If he truly believed the pablum he's spouting he wouldn't use as much energy as he does at home and on his jets and he wouldn't have a personal investment in carbon offsets. Big surprise he won and Oscar and an Emmy - I expect it from Hollywood nitwits, but the Nobel committee? They'll be a laughing stock forevermore.
Cynthia, Hallsville, TX
I still don't see how global warming and peace are connected. Besides, Gore winning the already devalued Ignoble Peace Prize doesn't mean anything at this point since Carter had won it.
Heck, I've planted five trees in my yard and they are now huge and producing oxygen while at the same time reducing carbon dioxide. One volcano eruption can undo all the difference I have made multiplied by a million times. Manmade global warming is immeasurable compared to the global warming caused by the natural forces of this planet and the sun.
If Gore thinks he is God, then he should be able to clear up global warming on his own.
Awkins, Johnson City, USA / New York
Congrats to Al Gore. He's an imperfect but good man who cares about America and the world we live in and wants to help save the environment. He'd make a good president. He won't run, Hillary's going to be the next president. Giuliani is a dismal candidate who hasn't got a chance.
Jason West, Long Beach, USA
I am surprised by all of the hatred expressed for Al Gore. I guess that the documentary, âAn Inconvenient Truth,â has really struck a nerve with the right. They have taken their heads out of the sand long enough to display their ignorance about a conclusion, for which the overwhelming majority of the scientific community is in agreement. The only unknown is how fast the effects of global warming will take place. When will we start debating whether the earth is flat?
Jerry, Cheshire, CT, USA
The Buddhist monks and nus of Burma would seem to be the obvious pick for this year's Nobel Peace Prize. Chosing a group of men and women who are attempting to lead a peaceful revolution against a tyrannical military (and paying for it with thier lives in many cases) would restore some of the prize's lost credibility.
If the committee picks Al Gore, America's meteorlogical Elmer Gantry, it will put the Nobel on a somewhat lower level than the Grammys.
J. Zeigler, Greenfield, Indiana, USA
Al Gore needs to get a real job. Global warming started shortly after the Ice Age thank goodness. I am looking forward to my offshore property being waterfront and I will not have to leave Cape May looking for warmer weather each winter. One house will now suffice. Retire where I live now. Thanks to America's strong industrial background--it is finally paying off for the hardworking blue collars. We will all live in a tropical paradise---what's wrong with that. Fresh veggies and fruit year round, no heating bills, less travel looking for warm weather etc. etc. I see a reversal of GW coming--Global Cooling. How about a Gore-Moore Ticket?? Hollywood would love that one.
John, Cape May,NJ

It's much akin totelling a bunch of false facts designed to awaken the World and getting a Nobel for your trouble. Gore's a chump AND he's so wrong in so many scientific facts. Some true....some not even close. I hope this isn't a scientific Nobel........he's just not right. He has been useful in some areas of Global warming. He's used his position as a former VP.........himself though.....he hasn't done much. Do mouthpieces get Nobels?
Abe, LA, CA
Gore would not have won with a recount. Sorry. Guess the facts are a little too much to handle for Gore supporters. That's probably why his global warming crusade is supported by so many people, too---just ignore the facts.

I love you libs still crying about Florida 2000. If Algore had won his OWN state of Tennessee he would have been Pres. I guess the good citizens of Tenn know who he really is. If you can't win your own state, well, HAAAAHAAAA. Can one of you enlightened Global Warming religoned Libs please explain to me what happened to the massive glacier that disappeared and left the Great Lakes? Did it melt? How could it have melted if WE wern't here to cause it? Dinosaurs driving diesels?

What category is he winning in? Maybe they could retroactively give him one for "inventing the internet" too, while they're giving away Noble Prizes.

If you want to fix any problem, do the opposite of what Al Gore says to do. He should get a Nobel prize for showing the world how to mess up things even worse.

Does Gore's carbon credit company involve planting trees for carbon credit? If so, how can planting a tree that is already existing help the environment?
GORE + NOBEL PEACE PRIZE = JOKE
sunshine484848, san Juan Capistrano, , usa
The Nobel prize has, sadly, become a political award. There is no merit to Gore's "science." Al Gore is not a scientist, he is a politician. Man's contribution to the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere is not enough to affect the climate. Science does not support man-made global warming. But that doesn't matter. The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize is guaranteed to hate America with a passion and blame it for all the world's problems and that is the only requirement for consideration by the committee. Ask Jimmy Carter. How trendy. But meaningless.
Cheryl, Austin, TX, USA
"Al Gore will provide the leadership to save the planet from Global Warming." Is it rich, he had eight years to do it as Vice President. He didn't seem to overly concerned then did he?
Al Gore saving the planet makes about as much sense as putting corks in cows to keep them from farting.
Melvin Leppla, Jacksonville, NC
Consensus among scientist? Really? The same consensus that foretold of the coming ice age in the 70s? The same consensus that gave us eugenics? The same consensus that said DDT needed to be banned, how many lives has that caused. No doubt the earth is getting warmer, but so are several planets in our solar system according to NASA. Is my SUV responsible for that too? Gore is either a well intentioned idiot or the most evil person alive, why not give him the Nobel Peace prize. How many live are going to impacted by this effort? At what cost are we willing to turn our lives over to "this inconvenieint truth" How about some concrete proof?
Jeff, Raleigh, NC
What a pure crock: statism may be having its finest hour. What a false savior.
Brandy, lamar, Iowa
So the Nobel committee has gone the same route as the Academy of Motion Pictures, giving awards not based on merit, but rather based on political agendas and political favors. They, like the Academy in recent years, have lost all credibility and common sense by propping Gore and his Global Warming scam. Even as we speak, they are changing the term to "climate change" in the hopes that people will forget "global warming" and get on board with the new lingo. I don't need to explain why that is. What a flaky bunch of alarmist nut jobs. I think their brains all got fried as a result of the catastrophic depletion of the ozone layer. Oh, wait, that never happened either.
Johnny, Brooklyn, Oh
Global warning is a natural phenomena! just 30 years ago while I was in high school, the same scientists were talking about "global cooling" and we would see a new ice age and starvation by the year 2000! Sure, the temps are going up. It is cyclical, has happened in other centuries WITHOUT all the green-house gas hype, and will happen again - so will global cooling. It has happened for centuries.
Burce Karger, Allison Park, PA
Can I do the interview as he gets off his or someone elses private jet to accept the award. I may also want to ask him a few questions like didn't we have an ice age and ask who caused all the ice to melt. Did they have large factories or carbon foot prints back in the day. Does the biggest lie become the truth? The world goes through changes. in 1974 they said the ice caps were getting bigger and we were heading into a new ice age.
Brent , Chicago, IL
What a joke. We used to make hero's out of Nobel Peace Prize winners. Now it is essentially like the Oscar's or Emmy's, a popularity contest. Giving the Nobel to Al would be demeaning all the past winners who gave of themselves selflessly.

One of the inevitable consequences of unchecked global warming will be conflict and war over natural resources. By raising the world's cconsciousness of the situation before we reach a crisis, Gore has made a significant and historically unique effort to keep the peace.

EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE. Gore "solutions" to a problem caused by the sun and not generally mankind will cause world wide economic strife and mostly likely global wars due to high taxation and rationing.
Gore is the modern day Chicken Little. Only in this world an environut liberal like Gore be allowed to get up and spout half truths and outright lies and the media does nothing to question him. If Gore was Bush they would be trooting out every anti-warming scientist there is on the planet to call him a boob. But because it is Gore, a liberal, guess what Academy Awards, Emmys and Peace Prizes. It is the liberals way of soothing him for his loss of the White House

When the earth is between one of its many ice ages, then saying that the earth is warming has the same predictive powers as stating that it's going to be dark at midnight. If the Committee chooses to give the Peace Prize to Big Al...well, the prize looses a little of it's sparkle.

When I was a teenager, I thought the Nobel peace prize was something to aspire to and the recipeints to be admired and emulated. When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I felt as a child, I thought as a child: now that I am become a man, I have put away childish things. Arafat and now Gore? Keep it up and it will be as relevant as the winner of the lottery. THEY DIDN'T EARN THE MONEY.
Michael, Chicago, USA
What's next, Michael Moore getting a peace price for confirming that carrots kill people because everyone that has ever ate a carrot has died or will die. Bad statistics and lack of evidence gets him an award for his fight against Man-Bear-Pig. The warming happening on Mars is due to our SUV's and that is how we got out of our last ice age. Our cars ROCKED the glaciers into submission. It had nothing to do with planetary movement or the change in orbit around the sun due to outside gravitational forces. Humans are powerful enough with cars and cow farts to make the earth get warmer without a massive use of thermonuclear weapons. Al Gore doesn't believe what he is saying or he would practice the crap he preaches and not use so much energy, or a private plane. Let him walk around like the Martyr Jesus he thinks he is on foot. Then we can have even less respect for the peace prize. If they give it to Yasir Arafat the father of modern terrorism, give it to Gore too!

RUSH has been nominated fo rthe same prize. but again the media will not speak of him they only want to tear him down. they have become scared to mention even his name because it gives him more credibility and they lose their credibility with thte dems who want RUSH out. again if LIBERALS were open minded they could see RUSH as a healer and not a harmer as GORE has become. GORE is trying to tear down the country by regulating the U.S. into submission economically to create a larger welfare state that is so dependant on the NANNY STATE. you wil choose today whether you are a dependant or an individual.

Al Gore is paying those 2000.00 electric bills with profits from training others to present an "Inconvenient Truth Slide Presentation".The mayor of Austin just went for 2300.00/day. Al Gore also appeared In Austin w. slide presentation for 200/ticket! As they say: follow the money- "carbon tax" to pay for your "carbon footprint" and it all starts with making the people feel guilty for driving vehicles or not using the "right" bulbs from Walmart. Give me a break. Some say the charts he uses in the movie are opposite each other. In other words, C02 levels are driven by warming not warming driven by C02 .
Monica Savant, Austin , Texas
Gore deserves a prize for being the biggest hippocrate on the planet. He finds it easy to tell us that we need to conserve more energy, think green, or reduce our carbon footprint. All the while, he lives in a huge mansion that consumes large amounts of energy, and takes flights on private jets. Al Gore should be ashamed of himself. He should really practice what he preaches.
Bob, Lincoln, Nebraska
Global warming is nothing more than yet another way of the socialists trying to control the world and your live. Ask Patrick Moore a co-founder of Green Peace. He has said that the environmentalists of today (the greens) are actually the socialists and communists (the reds) of the early 1990s. Patrick Moore when on further to state that the hysteria over global warming is so bad that Green Peace was activity try to ban chorine in all forms world wide. The problem with that, as Patrick Moore tells us, is that chorine is found in the period table.

"When these resources become significantly more scarce than they are now, the result will be massive loss of human life, from starvation, thirst--and, yes, war over what is left of these resources."
Ahh, so the solution is to make them prohibitively expensive right now and thus keep up a steady rate of death by privation/starvation instead of doing it by fits and starts?
BTW the "deady" carbon dioxide is the basic food of all life on Earth (this includes you unless you are already a brain dead leftist) . If we want to kill more people wouldn't it be a good idea to starve off all life on earth from its most fundamental nourishment - CO2?

I will fully support AlGore's Nobel nomination when he discovers a way to turn down temperature of the sun, affecting the only thing in our solar system with the ability to change global warming not only on earth but the rest of the solar system.
Yes, global warming is spreading like a cancer to other planets as well.
Save us Al!
Chas, Beaver Dam, WI
Global warming? Sure, the planet seems to be warming up, really, by how much?
From earth-policy.org, during the years 1885-2005, the average temp in Celsius rose from 13.4 to 14.7 degrees. They depict this 'alarming' rise on a very significant looking chart. Of course, the Y axis was chosen in tenths of a degree to make the data appear significant.
Temperature is a measure of energy, and should be calculated from absolute zero. Doing so yields a temperature increase of less than one half of one percent of one degree Kelvin!
Absolute zero = -273.15 Kelvin
13.4 C = 286.55 Kelvin
14.7 C = 287.85 Kelvin
diff = 1.3 Kelvin
1.3 / 286.55 = 0.0045 = less than one half on one percent of one Kelvin (degree)
All of the 'scientists' know this, yet allow the hype to continue to receive funding. The 'scientists' also know the sun's luminosity, volcanos, and gamma rays play a significant role but aren't figured into climate models. Only cars and factories are in climate models.
Scott, Lenexa, Kansas
I Gore wins anything it should be joker of the year. Seeing how he invented the internet maybe he has some other inventions to give us??? He should have invented something like a giant bell to off in his head when he gave all that money to the buddist monks to let him know that was a big no no and maybe fuel for his privat jet that he runs around in wasting energy or his swimming pool & house now how much does that all cost????? If he wins then the whole prize thing is a farce.
Annie, Cleveland, ohio
So many things are beyond reason now but this must sit high atop those unfathomable happenings. Peace Prizes are now given to those who embarress us most. Jimmy Carter, our Ambassador to all dictators of this world, and now Al Gore, the cry baby of politics gone further astray in a global cry. How in the world can anyone think that we weak humans can possibly change anything? Of course climate changes occur as it has over many millenia, but to say humans are to blame? Nonesense!!

If Al Gore wins the once-revered Nobel peace prize, that prize will be proven to be nothing more than a cheap piece of junk similar to what you get in Cracker Jack. The former vice president is running the world's biggest scam, and the politically correct wingnuts have fallen for it...hook, line and sinker.
Janet Fuls, Cottonwood, CA, USA
Too bad Al won't debate the Professor from Harvard who, while not disputing that climate change is occuring, offers a much different view on the reasons why. The book "The Little Ice Age" is a great read that documents the traumatic climate change that occured in the 1300's and lasted until the mid-1700's. If you ever wondered why Greenland is called Greenland, read the book! I would think a worthy nobel nominee would welcome debate. Oh that's right, I said worthy.

Dan Rather called florida for Algore while the polls were still open in the panhandle (redneck riviera, mostly GOP). Talk about suppressing the vote. Many hundreds who were waiting in line or due to vote before 8pm turned around and went home. My calculus shows that Algore actually lost florida by over 10,000 votes.
Moldie, NJ, USA
Troy Masters, the Florida recount DID finish and Bush still won ...by a wider margin than originally thought. The courts didn't decide who won that election, the democratic process did. It worked exactly as designed many moons ago, get over it.
Marvin in Vancouver, noone disputes global warming is real. What we disagree on is the cause and our ability to influence it. Our planet warms and cools, has done this in cycles since the beginning of time. Historically, we're overdue for a substancial warming period and no matter how many laws we make it WILL happen. Is it worth thrashing the entire world economy to make the warming one degree less severe? I doubt it would even make that much difference. Open your mind, it's foolish to believe what you hear without researching it for yourself. There are many EXTREMELY brilliant scientists who claim Gore's theories are very flawed and they constantly request a debate. He refuses and counts on people like you who follow blindly.

As more and more climatologists are mustering up the courage to publically state Gore's global warming theories are in error, the Nobel folks will go ahead and give the award to Gore anyway? That's about as much credibility as them giving the peace prize to a terrorist leader! LOL!!!!
.....wait, they already did that. How pathetic.
Darryl, Omaha, Ne, USA
The fact is that if Al Gore wins the nobel is that it will be just another confirmation that the nobel committee has become nothing but a junk science, dictator, and communist loving society, bent on nothing less than the total destruction of truth. What started out as a good way of promoting peace works in the world, has turned into a plush fund for anti-American, anti-Israel, anti-moral people who if they did not push for ludicrous agendas would have no more pull than the local alley bum. Real science does not support global warming, and if people did more than read tabloids and listen to biased media, they would understand that a knowledge of global temperatures even by scientific models shows much greater fluctuations in shorter periods of time before the industrial revolution ever took place. Also the fact that one volcanic eruption (which by the way we have several hundred per year) puts up more greenhouse gases than man has since the beginning of this century. nuf-said.
Brad, Newark, Ohio
He was NOT a failed Presidential Candidate...he won nearly 2,000,000 more votes than the idiot who was given the job by the Supreme Court after the Court decided Florida should stop counting its vote...it was eventually proved that had Florida been allowed to examine its vote Gore would have won that state as well and therefore the Presidency.
Troy Masters, NYC, USA
if al gore wins the peace prize he doesn't deserve it. he sits on the boards of companies that are going to make money on this ''global warming'' scam. what a phony, tell gore to trade in his ''big house and car and then maybe some idiot will believe him, i DON'T.

As usual the feeble-minded right wingers engage in ridiculous platitudes and diversions instead of recognizing the real contributions of Al Gore. Yes, climate change is real, and we contribute to it. I thought the Nobel Peace Prize was intended for individuals who made major contributions to world peace.
On what basis is Al Gore even a nominee? Has he defeated a dictator like Hitler or Stalin in battle? Has he brokered a cease-fire or peace agreement between two warring factions? Has he brought together nations, groups or individuals who formerly had no direct communication or diplomatic ties?
If you want to focus on global warming, what has he done to alleviate the pending crisis he claims we are facing? Is his life an example of how we should live to overcome global warming? If so, where do I sign up for my mansion with the heated swimming pool? Where do I sign up for private jet trips and limousine service?
The Nobel committee should post a sign: Conservatives need not apply.
Allen, Celina, Ohio, USA
The Nobel Prize has become a joke because it is now about politics - period.
Al, Washington, D.C.
Al Gore has brought to light the most important issue of our time. Are we going to ignore his message, keep building our 4,000-square-foot homes, buying gas guzzlers, and leaving the mess to our children and grandchildren? People, wake up! This is not a "liberal" issue. It is, as Gore states, a "moral" issue. Gore certainly deserves the peace prize.
Lindy, Penryn, CA
They lost credibility then they gave it to Yassir Arafat. This is a joke. Gore said the debate was over on global warming. Closed minded fool.

Please, please, please pick Gore! The Dem race is getting pretty boring with Hillary running away with nomination, and if Gore could make it interesting, bring it on. Can you imagine the war that would break out on the left if the race suddenly became Gore v Clinton? Gosh, it would be a beautiful thing to see.

If Al wins it will put him on the same esteemed level as Jimmy Carter! If anything if the left-wing evironuts get their way and start taxing the living hell out of everyone and forcing people to give up cars and their ways of life for a disputed topic that not even scientists can agree on will cause more war, upset and strife in the world.

How can Gore win the Nobel when he has talked a good talk but stumbled while walking.
This guy has had (according to past newspaper articles or blurbs written on the net) on occasions flew a jet short and long distances, had a energy bill (gas & electric) that was supposed to have totaled about $2,000. a month for his primary residence, has driven SUV's that were supposed to not be the "gas saving" SUV's, etc.
So after reading the above (and if its true) how can someone with such hipocracy be allowed to even be in the running for such a highly coveted award?
Not to mention all the lies that came out durring the Presidential election. At least I am greatful for his input in the invention of the internet so we can converse like this?
What a joke, the guy has an agenda and it will be known soon.
Didn't anyone read one of his last articles about not being bitter about the 2000 election then how he went on to explain his bitterness in full detail.
Imen Woocare, Madison, Wisconsin
Al Gore is a true American HERO and PATRIOT. He is a great man and future generations will honor him and his courage for standing up against the corrupt machine of Republican greed.
David Michael Barrett, Silverlake, CA, United States of America
Each time he flies his plane from one city to the next he puts more "footprints" in the air than I do driving my car for a whole year. He IS making a difference (if it - global warming - were real).
Bobby, Stillwater, MN
Wow, such hatred here. Sad.
Big Todd Schwarz, Buttville, Ar
Find out what Al's neighbors know - especially those that live downstream of his homestead on the Caney Fork River. Simply google GORE ZINC and see for yourself what the Wall Street Journal (6/29/99) and USA TODAY have reported (this past spring) - he leases his land to Occidental Petroleum running a large zinc mine that pollutes the Caney Fork - for which TN has cited him. It is plain to see from the highway and well known locally. Is anyone listening out there? Yes, pollution is a problem that needs to be dealt with! It can only undermine the effort to do so with a COMPLETE HYPOCRITE running the show.
joyce kilmer, nashville, tn
A socialist prize for a hypocritical socialist. Put his disgusting portrait next to Yassar Arafat's.
scot, ukiah, usa, ca
Yes Jean, increasing temperature with the subsequent increase in water vapor (and hence clouds and therefore rain) and increased vigor of plant growth due to a small increase in C02 will certainly cause mass hunger and thirst throughout the world!
Andrew Smith, London, UK
Hysterically pathetic!
Scott, Conway, SC
"Al Gore has made a difference"
Really? Intentions, good or otherwise, are not the same as results. And I don't remember reading that he lowered the earth's temperature.
scotty, Dallas, TX
The Nobel Peace Prize has absolutely nothing to do with peace anymore .. it's more like a prize from liberals to the "best" liberal.
Jeffrey, Kincardine, Ontario, Canada
Big deal! So Gore will get to join the ranks of Nobel Peace laureates like terrorist leader Yassir Arafat, and Jimmy Carter ("history's greatest monster") who never met a dictator he didn't like. The Nobel Peace committee has long since demonstrated that they are more interested in coronating the Liberal-of-the-Year than in recognizing anyone who actually promotes the cause of peace.
p3orion, San Antonio, Texas
Give me a break..if ALgore wins, there goes another great institution down the crapper in the name of political correctness.
No Rino's, Columbus, ohio
"A prerequisite for winning the Nobel peace prize is making a difference ..." Ha. The SOLE criterion for winning a Nobel "peace" prize these days is one's credentials as a bonafide left-wing wacko -- and the more brazen the better. Any self respecting person would be ashamed to accept one if it were offered - it says things about the recipient that decent folks would prefer not to be tainted by.
John Breland, Clinton, MS
How depressing.
MGB, Carmarthen, Wales
I can't imagine anything that would cause the Nobel Prize to lose its credibiity faster or lessen its value more. Is a worthless political statement worth all that?
John Krogstad , Burlington, MA, USA
If the Goracle wins the Nobel Peace Prize for spouting exagerations and bold face lies then I hope global warming speeds up because our civilization needs to come to an end.Rational people know that the climate changes constantly and we have nothing to do with the direction it goes . Just look at history folks!!!
Bob McGivney, Clayton, NC
Paleeeze!!
Ronald, las vegas, usa/nv
Absolutely astonishing that a man who travels via private jet and uses as much electricity in a month in just one of his homes as others do in a year could be nominated.
Al Gore, by his actions, clearly doesn't believe the hokum he is is pushing. The fact that he has so many followers is testament to the gullibility of man, not the urgency of global warming.
Jack Lord God, springfield, OR
Al Gore fought in Vietnam, when he didn't have to; supported the First Gulf war and the bombing of Serbia; and usually votes pro-gun lobby. He seems an unlikely candidate for a Peace Prize.
Frank Upton, Solihull,
Al looks like crap. You can tell he does not believe his own dribble... The Nobel peace prize now has lost all its creditability, just like Hollywoodâs Oscar These titles are passed out like candy as political statements, nothing else...
Can I buy one too?
Patrick, San Diego, CA
"Al Gore the hypocrite"
I'm pretty sure Al Gore is doing more than "Dr." Andrew Jones from PA. We'll never make significant progress on this issue until people stop letting politics and petty name calling interfere with the real message.
Ted, Collingswood, NJ
In response to DOCTOR Andrew Jones
It may be time for you to go back to school. How can someone with an education level such as yours, STILL believe that Gore isn't concerned about the environment or still believe that we are not experiencing Global Warming? The debate is whether or not it's caused by human actions. 95% of Republicans that have investments in the oil industry say it's not, are you saying that all of them are wrong and this is 100% human driven?
I'm sorry but your comment shows nothing more than your pessimism for the man. It's obvious that you have pre-conceived notions about him.
Jeremy McEvoy, Hastings, MN
The environment can not be changed by the human hand.
We can influence it a little, but from a geological standpoint
humans are too small to change the climate of the earth.
Most professional scientists agree with that statement.
The earth is changing, and no matter what we do, it
will not stop it.
So we should prepare for it, not prevent it.
Bill Wright, Encino, ca
"Not my S.U.V.! YOU must change!"
Al Gore is a hypocrite even by American political standards. At congressional hearings earlier this year he was praised as a 'prophet'. However the scare media misspelled. From carbon credit schemes to Nobel prize money the Profit Gore is living large on lazy people's inability to look beyond their telly for scientific information. Human Caused Global Warming's dirty little secret? Carbon dioxide is not the number one 'greenhouse gas'. It's water vapor. But there isn't much money to be made by demonizing water vapor.
Mark Hedges, Denver, USA
Global Warming will continue to be an issue right up to the point when we begin to worry about Global Cooling (as we did in the 70s).
George, Dallas,
Hah, Al Gore the hypocrite!! The 2.5 degree increase in global warming can be directly attributed the 35,000Kwh energy consumption (3 times the yearly average) of Al Gores house!!!
Dr. Andrew Jones, PA, USA
Andrew Jones, Philadelphia, PA
"Unlikely! A nomination is not worth anything."
His nomination came from the Norwegian parliament.
Now, as you're Norwegian, you should know who picks the selection committee for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Sock Puppet of the Great Satan, Shaitan,
There are much better documentaries out there on global warming, and there are scientists who have spent their lifetime working on this problem. Yes, this man, with a documentary full of inaccuracies is going to receive the Nobel Prize based on that film?
James B., Atlanta, USA
After air, the two most basic needs for human survival are water and food. When these resources become significantly more scarce than they are now, the result will be massive loss of human life, from starvation, thirst--and, yes, war over what is left of these resources.
So the fight against global warming is most definitely about saving people's lives.
Jean Cassidy, Suffern, USA
Unlikely! A nomination is not worth anything. Tens of people are nominated each year from all corners of the world. And all kinds of people, both sane and insane, get to nominate people (as long as they qualify). Gore will not win, something unexpected will happen for sure.
Andrew, Oslo, Norway
