The golfer Tiger Woods has missed the baptism in Sweden of his three-month-old daughter, Sam, according to Swedish media reports.
Woods is married to the Swedish model Elin Nordegren, whose family turned out in force for the christening ceremony in Stockholm yesterday. But one source close to the family said: "“Everybody was very surprised over the fact that Tiger did not show up.”
Quite why Woods missed the event is not clear and a spokeswoman for the golfer declined to comment. The Associated Press ran pictures early on Sunday morning, European time, of Woods attending a charity event in California.
Baby Sam Alexis Woods was born in Florida in June, the day after Woods tied for second place in the US Open.
Among the baptism guests were Elin's twin sister Josefin, who picked up the golfer's wife as she arrived in a private jet. The two sisters, accompanied by bodyguards, attracted a lot of attention when they went shopping in Stockholm, buying beer and wine for the baptism party.
To avoid media attention the baptism did not take place in the church but in a gym. “Elin had removed the equipment in the gym and made into a baptism facility”, one source said.
Tiger’s father-in-law, Thomas Nordegren, arrived with the baptism bowl - the same bowl that was used when Elin and her sister were baptised.
Elin's mother, Barbro Holmberg, a former government minister, was among the first to arrive, carrying a pink baptism gown.
Woods and met his future wife in 2001 when she was was working as a nanny at the Florida mansion of Jesper Parnevki, the Swedish golfer.
They were seen in public for the first time in South Africa 2003 and were married at an exclusive golf resort in Barbados the following year.

It's there business - not ours. Thanks for the story.
JP Rice, Clearwater, Fl
He made a commitment to be at the Third Annual Block Party...people attended because Tiger was going to be present ....it's major fund raiser...Elin knew this and could had the baptism another day or she could of told Tiger she understood his commitment and is going on with her plans and he completely understood....
ann, ho-ho-kus,
I am quite sure they discussed this beforehand. With Tiger's retinue of agents and schedulers, nothing will be missed by Mrs. Woods, most certainly not a prior arrangement that would have made flying to Sweden for the baptism a bit iffy. His lifestyle makes her lifestyle possible. Only an immature individual (hopefully not Elin) would think otherwise.

Give people an ounce of information and watch 'em run with it.... Let the judgments begin!
Debbie, Indiana,
Give Tiger a break. He just got married and I don't think he would have missed that for the world except for some pre-arranged and pre-agreed commitments and also something to do with his beliefs.
Whatever the case you wouldn't like people poking their noses itno your marriage affairs would you?
I am sure this is something they have agreed to and I doubt for once that they do not love each other as they used to.
It's none of ours or anybodys business to speculate as to why he wasn't there.
Nicole S Dubois, Lusaka, Zambia
I don't know why Tiger missed the baptism but I don't think he is a selfish individual. He may have had a prior appointment or business deal that his wife knew before she settled on the date of the baptism. Give Tiger a chance, he doesn' t need the fans or people in the world for approvement when he is missing from family events.
Mikeo, West Palm Beach, Florida
Tiger woods is buddhist and his belief is different than of his wife. He is not selfish because he let his wife baptized his daughter. Being buddhist myself I let my husband baptized my son and we are one happy family!
Judy, Salt Lake City, Utah
I feel that his decision not to attend was selfish and dissrespectful to his wife, child, and in-laws.
If his wife expected him to show up, there may be a storm brewing.............
robert gleason, sullivan, wi
I don't know why Tiger didnt attend, but I don't buy the reason being that he didnt want to "take away" from Sam's christening. What, is he going to miss EVERYTHING in her life cause he doesnt want to distract . Please, give me a break! I agree the baptism could have been changed if he had a prior committment.
I'm Catholic, my husband is not. we raised our daughter Catholic and her father attended her baptist, communion and went with us to church, albiet very rarely but he did. You don't have to be of the same faith, its about the child.
Annie, port charlotte, florida
Until we know all the facts, it is not never wise to speculate. As one writer commented, Tiger was raised Buddist by his mom and as far as I know he has not converted to Christianity. Not every child gets baptised - for various personal reasons. As another writer wrote, Tiger's charity event was most likely set months or even a year ago - I know he just had his second annual Block Party Fundraiser which is planned a year in advance.
Whatever the reason, I am sure that neither Elin nor her family were in the "dark" that he would not be attending and that is entirely their personal business.
I also believe, contrary to what one writer has written, that Tiger is a good father just as his dad was to him until the day he died. Not having your child baptised does not mean one is not a I good father. There are many parents who raise their children "poorly" who had their them baptised. Let him/her who is without sin cast the first stone.
Marjorie Taylor, Brampton, Ontario
A baptism in a school gym? Sounds as tho the wife's family wanted to attract all the attention they could. Surely, there could have been enough police protection and or private security guards available if it were to have been the religious event tooted. Tiger seems to have exercised good taste in choosing to honor his commitment to the charity event which was probably in the planning far longer than the baptism. The baptism could have been set for a more convenient date...the ritual does not have a date set in stone. Who could blame him for making the choice he did.
Orion, Bradford, USA
He's a casual Buddhist, at best. It appears he's a casual husband and father, as well.
Fran, Chicago,
The person who said that Tiger may have stayed away, with the family's blessing (pun intended), because the event would have become about him instead of about his daughter made a good point I remember when I attended the high school graduation of Bill Cosby's son (my best friend's daughter was also graduating), and his wife and all the siblings were there, but not Bill. It was felt that he didn't want his presence to detract from Ennis's big day.
Ruth, Philadelphia, PA
I'm dissappointed that Tiger wasn't at least supportive of his wife and child, even if his religious beliefs differ.
The least he could do is to be by their side during a historic moment in their lives.
Brent, Portland,
What do you mean, "At least he is not a hypocrite, showing up for something he doesn't believe in". You married the woman and had a child with her. Maybe they should have discussed there spiritual differences prior to getting married and having children. Just because he has a different religious belief doesn't give a "Father" the right to be absent at an important occasion.
Mike, Sacramento,
Spiritual differences are often times the reason a parent will skip the ceremony. In this case, however, it looks like Elin's family might have been driving this event based on family tradition.
Todd Bainter, Springville, Utah
I will agree with the others who comment that Tiger's spiritual belief's are not those of his wife's.
At least he is not a hypocrite, showing upr for something he doesn't believe in - makes me respect all the more.
Kaisa, San Francisco, CA
I hope everything is fine with Tiger and family!
maria loi, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Tiger may have wanted the baby and his wife to be the most prominent. His presence would have detracted much attention.
Warren Nerz, Fayetteville, New York
I believe that Tiger's spiritual beliefs are probably not the same as Elin's. That was the reason for not showing.
Karen Keasey, Eureka, CA
Maybe tiger isn't a Christian and doesn't consider it a big deal in the life of his daughter. I'd agree. His presence is about as likely to get her into heaven as her baptism is.
sooterkin, bangkok, thailand
i cant belive that he would miss .if that was my daughter then i wouldent care what was planned i would go your family is moreimportant then fame and golf ect...
