How the Sunday Times predicted Gore's victory
Al Gore won the Nobel Peace Prize today for warning the world about the dangers of global warming, and leading the campaign to persuade governments and individuals to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels.
The former US vice-president will share the £750,000 prize with the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the United Nations panel which has worked for two decades to establish consensus on the science of man-made warming.
Mr Gore said tonight that climate change is the most “dangerous and urgent challenge” the world faces at the moment and said it is time to “elevate global consciousness” about the challenges of global warming.
"I will be doing everything I can to try to understand how to best use the honour and recognition of this award as a way of speeding up the change in awareness and the change in urgency," said Mr Gore, who will donate 100 per cent of his prize money to the IPCC.
“It truly is a planetary emergency and we have to respond quickly.”
With his wife Tipper grinning widely by his side, Mr Gore would not answer any questions after his statement, including whether or not he would run for President.
The prize puts Mr Gore's name on what is perhaps history's most illustrious list, alongside such campaigners for freedom, democracy and human values as Lech Walesa, Aung San Suu Kyi, Mother Teresa and Martin Luther King.
He is not the first environmentalist to win the peace prize, which was given to Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan campaigner for sustainable development, three years ago. The Norwegian Nobel Committee said however that Mr Gore was one of the first politicians to understand the risks of climate change, and described him as "probably the single individual who has done most to create greater worldwide understanding" of the challenge it presents.
Mr Gore said today that he was "deeply honoured" by the award. He added: "We face a true planetary emergency. The climate crisis is not a political issue, it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity. It is also our greatest opportunity to lift global consciousness to a higher level."
Mr Gore has become the international poster boy for the green movement, organising a chain of Live Earth rock concerts this year which attracted hundreds of music stars and celebrities to help raise the profile of climate change.
He is best known for presenting An Inconvenient Truth, the 2006 documentary laying out the risks of global warming - although a UK High Court judge criticised it this week as "alarmist". The film won this year's Oscar for best documentary.

Yes it is the great step in the field of environment saving congratulations mr gore you have given us inspirations in working in this field

While I admire Al Gore for what he has done, too much emphasis has been put solely on him. He is a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize with the IPCC (Inter-governemental Panel for Climate Change). This organization has been dedicated to providing the scientific evidence, which Al gore uses in his presentations and campaigns, for more than 20 years. For those of you who may ask, "Why is the Noble Peace Prize going to a group that advocates climate change" here is what I have to say. It is no longer a mystery that the Earth's climate has been changed by human contributions. We are at a point where the prevention of atmospheric pollutants and the preservation of resources is not enough. In fact, more and more efforts are being put into studying ways to cope with the changes that are already here and have yet to come. I ask you, if you will, to imagine a world with a shortage of fresh water or energy, etc. Do YOU think there will be peace when this happens? They deserve the prize.
Joaquin , Blue Bell, PA
Thanks for these geat news! After a long time of only bad pictures from the US we get to know:there is hope again! Congratulations Mr. Al Gore and please run for President in 2008 and the world will be a better and more democratic one after this monster G.W.Bush.We have always loved the US and also visited till...We will come back when the administration in Washington is a better one.
Peace across the big pond
Helga Lode, Idstein, Germany
Wait. A judge rule his own personal opinion? What a shock. Honestly, I don't think allowing a biased person to singularly rule on a controversial issue is exactly the best way to prove anything.
The point of An Inconvenient Truth was not to go into the detailed accounts of science of global warming. The point was to scare and educate the masses. The masses lose interest when it gets too complicated. Especially the American masses. And for anyone upset about the scare tactics... get used to them. Every other movie, most successful news sources, and politicians use it. Welcome to the 21st century: global heating, lying, and scare tactics.
Alia, Seattle, US
Like many others, I believed The Peace Price were to be awarded to someone who had done something directly for peace. How this rich, shrewd politician could get it for making a film with quite a bit of lying in it. Is something, I can't understand.
But maybe Iâm missing the point, maybe he got it because he never got elected as president, and therefore did not start two wars?
I admire Al Gore for what he does, and I think it's important to focus on this difficult issue. Global Warming is important, and it needs all the publicity it can get, but the Nobel Peace Price? To a politician who goes everywhere, either in a private jet or a limousine?
Well, next time I hope they award it to someone who have worked to promote peace, democracy and freedom, judging from the last few awards that would be unconventional, butâ¦
What about the monks in Burma, those who works for democracy in Kina, or maybe posthumously to Anna Politkovskaya? Itâs a thoughtâ¦
Shameful Norwegian, Oslo, Norway
Now all Gore has to do is toss his hat into the race for President and give ol' Hildabeast a run for her mega bucks.
Oh and while Gore is in such august company as Mother Theresa and Martin Luther King, he is also in the company of the much disgraced Jimmy Carter , Kofi Annan and oh yes..terrorist Yaer Arafat.
The Nobel Peace Prize is not what is used to be..such a shame.
Marie Oseguera, Arroyo Grande, CA/USA
Most Americans view the nobel peace prize as a propaganda tool of the left and this "award" given Al Gore as something akin to the theater of the absurb.
He wouldn't be elected dog catcher here in Missouri.
Yank, Warrenton, Missouri
Well, he talked about the environmental problem through hollywood which call the attention of many people who were not even interested in looking at the problem, which is good, no matter his personal moral to talk about it or the technical discussion around the analysis, neither the poor quality of the "movie" or power point. HOWEVER, I am sure that it doesnt deserve a Nobel Prize. He must be uncomfortable with it and even worse a peace Nobel Prize!! come on!!! a bit of respect for those who does a serious effort!!
Karen, MI,
Arafat must be turning in his grave.
rob, Houston, tx
If Al Gore's inconvenient truth turns out to be an expensive fiction will he pay the money back? If all our cutting down on CO2 production results in a global cooling so dramatic that millins die of hunger and hypothermia will he be there to feed and warm us all?
I used to respect the Nobel prize scheme - not any more.
Sue Doughty, Reading, UK
Al Gore's film may not be perfectly precise, like weather forecasting, but does an admirable job in facing up to the issues that far too many of our political leaders are denying.
Peter B, Cardiff,
What does global warming have to do with peace? If you assume global warming is true and is bad for the planet, it doesn't fit with this award. This is clear evidence of the politicalization of the Nobel prize.
JT, Austin, TX, USA
Reading the comments I'm saddened to see how negative most people are. In many years time, when Iraq is just another forgotten war, people will be condemning the Bush Administration not for the petty politics of the time but for its abject failure to recognise the real danger facing the world. Whatever you think of Gore personally, he has raised awareness worldwide more than any other politican and he deserves recognition for that at least
I.PTulloch, Andover, UK
This is a disgrace to Nobel prize winners - past, present and future. If Nobel were aware of the trend that has been growing in recent years, towards the rewarding of 'social activists', he would be disgusted that his name were attached to such a prize.
Gore's work, and the 'findings' of the IPCC have been throughly discredited and debunked for the frauds they are. Hockey-stick graph anyone? What about the Medieval Warm Period?
This is what happens when science is thrown out the window, and 'compassion' and consensus are given the reins.
Rory Hodgson, London,
Not liking him is no reason to call him (repeatedly) a "failed politician". He had a long and distinguished political career that was ended not because he failed, but by a ridiculous debatable split decision and a botched vote count in a state that a Bush ran. Thanks Jeb.
The Peace Prize was awarded because his work is to help places like Dafur get some peace from the killing and raping that is a direct result of their draught conditions. At least he is trying to help other regions of the world and not fighting a war that is making the fossil fuel industry rich.
Vicki, Chicago, Illinois
Al Gore has now joined other other proponents of peace... like Yassar Arafat.
What a joke.
Derrick, Denton, TX
I fail to see a connection between climate change and world peace.
Aren't prizes of this type normally awarded to people who have actually done something not just talked about a problem?
James, Houston,
Algore's prize illustrates how nutty the libs have become. He's a raving, blathering lunatic: a perfect reflection of the intellectual beggars of our time.
Mark Raborn, Winston, Missouri
I can't imagine what could be more supportive of a future of peace and prosperity among the people of this world than to confront a potential environmental catastrophe. The scientific process is completely in accord to the facts surrounding global climate change, and it has been such in the face of decades of propaganda denying the results of sound scientific findings. Gore's documentary may be propaganda, in the sense it is meant to promote a political message, but the suggestion that it replaces the scientific method is simply naive. Rallying is not science, but in this case it is backed by scientific facts, reason, and the vast majority of the scientific community as a whole. The concerns of the planet are not separate from that of mankind--- how are we to have a future of peace if we allow the environment we live in to become volatile to our species? I fail to see the insidious ulterior motive behind global warming awareness--- but I see a clear financial motive to deny it.
Jason Thomas, Salt Lake City,
Don't forget the "fellow criminals" Wangari Maathai Lech Walesa, Aung San Suu Kyi, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King jr.
People, if you want peace than work for it.
If you want to improve the environment work for it.
If you want fairness in attributing the peace prizes then you come up with a prize bearing your name.
Don't forget what Nobel did in his lifetime
It's just so easy to criticize. I've done environmental research and now I'm among the others raising environmental awareness.
If you want a to see a change in the world make it by yourself. Stop blaming and complaining.
L. S., Sibiu,
Oh armchair critics, how easy it is to be so critical and negative? If it is so smart to mock, how about actually doing something of significance ourselves??
Through his actions (pretend/insignificant/hypocriotical however u chose to see them) he has garnered world attention and concern. As a very rich man he could have confortably retired and done nothing. His legacy will be great. How will we/Bush/Cheny/Rumsfield be viewed with history.
Congratulations Al. Thanks for trying to go beyond politics and make us simpletons actually take notice...
fiona agnew, Buenos aires,
Nobel Committee has lost site of the whole point of the "peace" prize. Al Gore has done nothing to promote international fraternity, abolish or reduce standing armies, or promote peace conferences. What he has done is replace the scientific process with political propaganda and promoted blaming America for causing the most global warming. Al Gore has put the concerns of the planet above that of peace for his fellow man. Shame on the Nobel Committee.
Ron Regan, USA,
In the steps of his fellow war criminals: Theodore Roosevelt, Jimmy Carter, Le Duc Tho, Henry Kissinger, Yasser Arafat, Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Mikhail Gorbachev, Menachem Begin, Anwar Sadat, Cordell Hull, George Marshall, Charles Dawes, and - above all, the man most directly responsible for at least 150 million dying at the behest of State terror and starvation - Woodrow Wilson.
Gore joins a large, illustrious, State-worshipping, murderous company, extending over a century, made bloody in every footstep by them and by those who abetted them.
I cannot think of any more cosmically profound, bitterly dismaying joke than the roster of the recipients of the Nobel Prize for Peace.
Now, the man will be insufferable CUBED. At least he can no longer be involved in ordering men and women to their deaths, though he will try to commandeer their wallets. And given the spinelessness of politicos in all parties, throughout the cowardly Western world, he's likely to succeed.
Steve Reed, Los Angeles, California, USA
Recall that G W Bush and Tony Blair were tipped at one time for the Peace Prize? How hilarious was that?
There's not much peacemaking these day from US & UK so Gore is good choice.
Edwin Moore, Birghton, Sussex.,
So the ex vice president of the worlds most polluting country and the world organisation who has done the smallest amount of work in the world to stop it have won the Nobel Peace prize for stating on celluloid what many more deserving institutions have been stating for years and years. How very sad. I hope previous recipients throw theirs in the bin in protest. (A recycling bin that is.)
OSJ, Ankara
OSJ, Ankara,
Mr. Bush, Mr. Howard, Big Coal, Big Oil - the tide is turning.
Dave, Knysna,
Who's next for the Nobel "Peace" Prize?
Why not someone who has actually reduced his country's CO2 emissions, instead of just talking about it?
Stand up, Robert Mugabe!
Redmond Hanlon, Winkleigh, England
H Park,
Nobel Prizes for literature, physics, chemistry , economics and physiology/medicine are awarded in Sweden, but Nobel Peace Prize in Norway.
Justyna, Secret, Poland
Thank God 'Algorithm' has won the Nobel Peace Prize. With a bit of luck, it will mean that Republican America can no longer casually dismiss Global Warming as a liberal myth. The world badly needs America to take a rather belated lead on this crucial issue and this well-deserved award will hopefully be the necessary catalyst.
Simon R. Gladdish, Swansea, Wales
Gosh! he didn't win the science prize! There is hope!
Max, drogheda, ireland
The Nobel Peace Prize has now become an official political joke.
It can never be taken seriously again. The agenda has been revealed.
HLH, Carrollton, Tx.
Annemarie from Warwickshire
You've got to be kidding! But if it's true... then Norwegians will be well advised to start saving up for his arrival and stay!
Justyna, Secret, Poland
Maybe they also thought he invented the Internet.
Scott, Durham, NC, USA
Annemarie,
I thought the Nobel Prize Awards was held in Sweden, Stockholm and not Norway?
Anyway, which ever country it is held in, he's still going to add to the climate change!
H Park, London, England
I think we will have to change the name from The Nobel Peace Prize to either the Nobble,(as in wangling your way in with daft ideas that can't be substantiated) or The Novel,(as in a totally daft idea that seems fun and causes some ammusement).
Please give some credit to the hard working scientists around the world who actually do some good but don't get any praise for their hardwork. A second rate, failed American politician that tells lies shouldn't have got this award. Oh and for all those followers of this person who thinks his word is gospel. remember the Ice Age, did our cars and machines cause the big thaw then as well?
Mike Jones, Farnborough, Hampshire
It should be pointed out that also included on 'historys most illustrious list' of nobel peace prize winners is Yasser Arafat, demonstrating that the panels decisions are often influenced more by fashionable political trends than merit. The tireless efforts and work of climate scientists over several decades to illuminate and understand this crisis, many who are on the IPCC, is where all the credit lies. This prize should have been awarded solely to the IPCC and not to a failed politician, one who was incapable of defeating even George Bush.
David Lea-Smith, Edinburgh, U.K.
Don't forget Yasir Arafat, Kofi Annan and Jimmy Carter are also numbered on this "illustrious list" of psuedo heroes.
Bruce, Kentucky, USA
No doubt a popular choice, and I am sure that the Nobel committee are sitting in Oslo feeling very proud of themselves in the warm fuzzy glow associated with Al Gore. However, can anyone tell me what Mr. Gore has done for world peace?
The Nobel committee have let themselves get carried away with a blatant case of band-wagon jumping.
Callum, Edinburgh,
Wow, this is scary: that someone with a zinc mine on his property, leased to Occidental Petroleum (no less) could get this kind of recognition. It is a scandal. Do a search and see for yourself - from a variety of left/right/center news outlets. See the 6/29/00 Wall Street Journal, the article in USA TODAY the spring of 07.... Search on GORE ZINC - find out what the people of Tennessee (his 'home' state) know and why he was defeated by HIS OWN STATE. Besides his locally well-known pro-tobacco hypocrisy, he is strip mining the land along the Caney Fork River! How can we allow ourselves to be duped like this??? You can see the mining equipment from the highway, you can find the records of citations for polluting the Caney Fork from the state records of Tennessee, you can see his Occidental royalties on his tax return. People, please wake up! He is the worst thing to happen to the environmental cause ever. This diversion by the corporate polluters, gets the attention off of them
bill kilmer, carthage, tn
How about a Nobel Peace Prize for all those who kept saying that the third millennium started on January 1, 2000 instead of January 1 , 2001. Their claim was about as solid as Goreâs, and had as many followers. As Melanie Phillips writes, this perfectly symbolizes a western world that has lost its reason and its capacity to tell truth from lies.
After Arafat this is the second most absurd decision.
Mladen Andrijasevic , Be'er Sheva , Israel
Now the criteria have been relaxed, how about giving one to that nice Mr. Cameron for something or other?
Tony Cox, Las Vegas, Nevada
Does Mr. Gore have to travel to Norway to pick up his cheque?? If so they might get the same answer that I got recently after inviting him to speak at an environmental Conference...'VP Gore charges $200,000 plus travel expenses and first class flights for himself and his two aides' Global warming a moral challenge? Indeed!
Annemarie, Warwickshire, UK
Make a 'broadly accurate' [political] film, organise a flop concert - and there you go, any more evidence required of standards not quite being what they were in Nobel prize land?
S.L.Cordon, Coalville / Leics., UK
