A male United States Navy sailor shot dead two female colleagues on a base in Bahrain this morning, according to reports today.
The two sailors were pronounced dead at the scene while the gunman sustained serious wounds and was taken to hospital in a critical condition, an unnamed American military official told the Associated Press news agency.
The Navy has made no official comment on the claims with a spokesman saying that an investigation is under way. He ruled out terrorism, adding that the incident "involved US military personnel only".
The incident took place around 5am local time at the United States Naval Support Activity base, in Jufair region, east of the capital Manama, in the base's barracks area.
In a statement, the US Navy said that the two sailors were pronounced dead at the scene, and the third was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
Officials closed the base temporarily and reopened it about an hour after the incident, the spokesman said.
The American military has had a presence in Bahrain since 1949 and the Fifth Fleet, to which the sailors belonged, played a key role in assisting with the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq and the operation to oust the Taleban in Afghanistan.
Around 5,000 American citizens are based in the Gulf kingdom, which has a free-trade agreement with the United States in return.

I am a navy mom that had a son station in Bahrain and knew the male shooter very well. This shooting and two females dying had nothing to do with the current war going on. Thier had been problems with two of the individuals for a few months. Why did the Navy not step in then and get this young man help? Why did the Navy issue him his gun that morning after a night a drinking? Why need the Navy not protect these females for this young male? It does not matter if you are in the military or cilivian world domestic voilence is a ongoing thing in this country. My heart goes out to all three families. But, why was this not prevented in the mean time. I am looking forward to how the Navy is going to explain this because of what my son has told me this young man should of never been issued his gun. This should of not of happen and the Navy did not protect the two females and the navy did not get the males the help he needed. But will we ever know the truth.

Brooks...I'll not resort to calling you an idiot but simply say do not speak on topics you have no knowledge about. This was not war-related or do you have a reading problem. And being prior military I can't tell you how many mens' asses I've had to save....no warfare is civilized. When you're fighting for your life and it's your ass or there ass all civilization goes out the window.
My condolences to the girls and their families. I met the 20 yr old through her sister who is military also....she talked to me about joining the military and her sister told me to convince her to not join.....she wanted to join the Marines originally. She was gung-ho military and had such spirit. And in a lil over a year she's gone....may they both rest in Peace

I do not agree with the male soldier-only philosophy as portrayed by Brooks,I simultaneously cannot comprehend the purpose being fulfilled by the presence of the US military base in Bahrain. Although, the governments of both the USA and the Gulf ,would justify that the presence of the US military base serves a greater good and offers worldwide protection and prevention of terrorism, the reasonable civilian cannot deny that given the reality of the circumstances predominately surrounding the Middle East, this is not the case. The most prevalent ideology right through the Arab regions is not that of abhorrence, but is one of sympathy, that is aimed at these young adults, whom are brainwashed into believing the virtuous rationale of their futile movement, who hold an immense belief in a genuinely bone fide and honorable cause. It is as simple as this;the citizens of the Nation exist merely to carry out their roles as pawns in universal game, which leaves them in the perilous hands of their masters

To the comment before it was a horrible inncident i will look back with sadness for the rest of my life. i knew the male and one of the female quite well. I think that no one should be talking about the relationship of any of them! The military is stressful and added all the confusions of a normal teenage life to the mix and you got yourselves a bomb ready to go off. What people here should of been concerned with is what happened prior to the inncident and what could of been done to prevent it. Why he had a weapon in the first place is the question!

Cough cough, say what, Brooks A? First up I think you have reality confused with dogma, and secondly "civilised warfare", who are you kidding. The idea of ANYBODY male or female or combination there of fighting is demeaning to humanity. You would think that after 50,000 years or more, that we would have figured out that war never works in the long run.
Besides, this isn't a war issue, it's a murder. (unless your idea of war is really really warped)

Hey Brooks. Women aren't PUT in the roles of men. Women choose for themselves what they want to do. Nobody sits there and tells them they have to join or they have to do this job. If they don't like what they have to offer then they can turn around and not join. Being a female and a member of the armed forces myself I find it insulting for you to say its demeaning for women to fight like men. If women are tough enough and understand what they are about to get into then I say it's their choice. Maybe if you joined the military you would have a understanding instead of being like rest of american who complain about the war and who protest every day when our soldiers, sailors, marines, airman, and coast guard men and women are dying to protect americans like you. So just think that every morning you wake up and get to do all the things you do and have fun is because of WOMEN and men keeping you safe so terrorists don't come here again and kill anyone else.

This is an unfortuante act of negligence by the US Military, by given a fire arm to a 20 year old boy, whose hormons must have been running riot, to then go and brutally murder in cold blood - there was obvious relationship connections between the male and one of the female sailors.
My thoughts are with the families, and Im looking forward to an explaination from the US Military.

Oh I see, Brooks, what we are saying to the ladies is, "don't worry girlies, we men will defend you and look after you so don't you worry your pretty little head about defending yourselves."
Wake up Brooks! History has shown that women have not been protected and indeed more non-combatants died in the last world war than combatants.
Every person has the right to defend themselves no matter who they are.
Peter, Brisbane, Australia
Hey Brooks, I don't live in your bible. This anarchy was caused by a male soldier, who apparently killed innocent people. Amazing how you can pin this on women too. Because we're all Jezabels, right?
Meghan Davis, Anchorage, AK USA
Lady soldiers are a contradictio in terms; ladies are the natural, the Bibllical, inspirqtion and nurturers of mankind. Male hormones demand deference to women, and female hormones most naturally demure to males. Any other artificial ralationship imposed against nature is a perversion bound to fail.
Historically, non-uniformed combatants were given no quarter, as being unlawful combatants who reck the law of war which forbids the slaughter of civilians. Notice that today, everything goes: wars are no longer declared, merely presumed; women are put in the roles of men, and anarchy reigns on the battlefield.
The idea of women fighting like men is demeaning to both males and females, and destructive to civilised warfare, which from the beginning would have given no quarter to non-uniformed partisans, but would have done so after a legitimate Declaration of War, listing the causes & reasons, the objectives, and the conditions for peace.
One perversion after another ...
