Police have examined the body of a young girl washed ashore in the United States for links to Madeleine McCann after evidence that it could have been swept across from Europe.
The body of a girl, named “Baby Grace” by police, was found by a fisherman, crammed into a blue plastic storage box on a beach in Galveston Bay, Texas, last week.
The description of the blonde-haired girl led to police contacting Interpol, the FBI and Portuguese detectives to consider the possibility that the girl could be Madeleine.
No trace has been found of Madeleine since she was reported missing from her bed in Praia Da Luz on May 3, just six days before her fourth birthday.
A post-mortem examination found that Baby Grace had been dead for at least two weeks and sustained a skull fracture. She was white, between 2 and 3 years old with long blonde or light brown wavy hair, and was wearing a pink skirt and shirt and white light-up tennis shoes.
Galveston County Sheriff’s Department received several tip offs that the description matched Madeleine. The search for Madeleine has received enormous coverage in the United States and the First Lady, Laura Bush, has made a personal appeal. But Major Ray Tuttoilmondo, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department, said that it had concluded that the body was not linked to Madeleine
“We’re confident it’s not her,” he told Fox News. “We’re still going through known missing person cases. It's a long process.
“Can I say absolutely she is not a known missing person? No," he said. “We are getting tips literally from all over the country. We’re going through every single one. This tells me that people are concerned.”
Mr Tuttoilmondo said that Gulf Intercoastal Waterway, where the box containing the body was found, is a major commercial port, and Galveston a popular tourist destination with a transient population.
Galveston County Crime Stoppers has set up a memorial fund to pay for the little girl's funeral and an account to offer rewards for anyone who helps investigators lead them to the killer.
Meanwhile, Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, have been given fresh hope that their daughter is alive after learning of the discovery of a bag of clothes with a possible DNA link to their daughter.
The bag of items uncovered in the search for Madeleine McCann are said to have been found just over two weeks ago in a lay-by near Faro Airport in Portugal, an hour's drive from Praia Da Luz where Madeleine was reported missing shortly before her fourth birthday.
The News of the World reported that the bag contained a child's T-shirt, a pencil case, a shower curtain, adult jeans and a blue fleece, which were handed to the Polícia Judiciária.
It is claimed that the Forensic Science Service in Birmingham found traces of hair and skin on the adult clothes with a partial DNA match to Madeleine. The link is thought to be only partial — about three on a scale of one to eight.
Mr and Mrs McCann, both 39, from Rothley, Leicestershire, were described as “encouraged” by the development, which would suggest she could still be alive, and also backs up their view that Madeleine was abducted.
A friend said: “It is encouraging because we think it shows that there is a chance, this could indicate an abductor has potentially discarded clothes on the way from Praia Da Luz. It is the first clue found outside the apartment complex and could provide a trail.
“We realise this is not conclusive proof, but we are encouraged the police have examined it and sent it for analysis so quickly. Certainly we feel that whoever owned the clothing has got a lot of questions to answer.”
The McCanns' spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, declined to comment on the story but called for police to investigate. “Gerry and Kate trust that the police will, of course, follow up any potential lead that could indicate she was abducted as that is exactly what happened,” he said.
Mr and Mrs McCann, who are official suspects in their daughter's disappearance, have provided Portuguese detectives with a list of 25 witnesses they want reinterviewed. They believe that the witnesses will clear their names and could hold vital clues about a mystery abductor.
Private investigators hired by the couple to search for their daughter believe she was abducted and taken to Morocco. Investigators are looking for the missing girl in the Rif mountains after reported of sightings of her in the village of Fnidek, east of Tangiers.
However, the Moroccan authorities have insisted that they have no reason to believe Madeleine may be in the country.
Chakib Benmoussaas, the Interior Minister, said: “We have no new evidence suggesting such a presence in Morocco. We have co-operated for a long time with Portuguese and British police through Interpol and we have not had any new development on this case up until now.”

DMK, Bradford : Would you leave your 3 year old alone in the UK, let alone in a foreign country?? You say "acid comments", well sorry, I am so sorry for Maddie, I want her found safe and well, and returned to her family. I do not however, think that her parents should be pitied - there is no getting away from it, they chose an evening meal with their friends rather than looking after their children, resulting in a very high price being paid by that dear little girl.

My god what a world. How can somebody place the body of a baby in a box and chuck it into the sea?
Bring back the death penalty I say!
At least I hope demons visit these people in their sleep.
paul, Milton Keynes,
A DNA match of 3 on a scale of 8 means that there's less than a 50% possibility that the DNA is a match with Madeline's. That's less probability than a coin toss. The odds that there are other female, blonde children with Anglo-Saxon heritage in Portugal is pretty high.

Poor "baby Grace" a little innocent toddler found 'crammed' into a storage box. the world holds so much evil, poor little thing.. let there be a heaven.. I pray for madeline also, the tourment of her poor parents with so many people with their acid comments, shame on them. I have a little girl aged three, i cant imagine what they have gone through, and are continuing to go through. The evil out there, that someone feels they have a right to take someones child, I cant put my thoughts there, but I pray and hope for all parents who have lost their children. To hurt a child is a terrible crime.

I live in Rothley and took my children to the Church on Saturday - my 3 year old daughter was playing with Alemie and Shaun in the front of the church when Amelie pointed out Madelines picture on the board and said "thats my Maddie and my mummy". It absolutely broke my 42 year old male heart and my wife broke down in sobs of tears. How the McCanns withstand the pressure is beyond me, maybe its their faith in God that helps them. The twins appear to be happy and inquisitive - so they are still functioning a good parents. The media bazaar is horrible and intrusive. We all hope Maddie is found soon, so the McCann family can get back to some sort of normality (whatever that will be for them as a result of all this). And the press and cameras can go somewhere else.
Des, Roth;ey, UK
It is not our place to speculate on any of the circumstances of either case. It is to late for Baby Grace all we can do now is pray to find her parents and the monsters that did this to her. As for Maddie all any of us should be doing is praying that she as well does not end up like poor Baby Grace. And that maybe by the Grace of God she will be reunited with her family alive.
Val, Missouri, USA
I want to cry thinking of both girls. Children are so precious. Instead of just talking maybe praying for these situations would actually help.
Jessica, Rochester, NY, USA
the culprit is still in portugal for sure .....for the bag to be planted there 2 weeks ago?........someone sent the word for that to be done .........

Firstly I hope that the US police can find who's Grace and that her murderer(s), if any, may be punished. This poor child is as important as Madeleine, nothing less. Secondly and now about Maddie's case, I really think this stinks more and more, and so much fake evidence that's being strategically (in a time scale) sought/placed/located here and there, only will make us all to not give up on knowing the whole, plain thruth. I strongly wish this will happen one of these days!
J. P. Brito, Faro,
Who discovered the bag and when?
I don't think rubbish bags in laybys are routinely examined, are they?
Rosemary, London,UK,
I believe the McCanns should keep on searching for Madeleine as long as they need to.
What I find appalling is that there is not one comment here about poor little "Grace" - obviously another missing child but no one seems to care.
Liz, London,
Come on ! another red herring !
Rosa, frankfurt, germany
I wouldn't be able to stop looking if my child was missing. I pray every night for there to be a positive outcome for the McCanns. I also pray that the parents of that poor dead child found in Texas are located and they at least have closure.
To Adria, I hope you are not minimizing the grief and hope such a personal tragedy would inflict on a parent, no matter what color of skin or hair, this is a human life, a child and as such is precious.
Jenny, Grand Rapids, MI, US
I agree with Jean. Bags of clothes are commonly thrown out at laybys. Why this one. What prompted someone to give this in. Even to go through the bag in the first place. Something does not add up. It's got plant written all over it. Shower curtain as well!!!!! To conceal a body perhaps. Someone put it there so it can be found, no doubt. Question is: Who's in the frame? Who is the other DNA profile. A killer masking there track or someone wanting the case closed?? Interesting to see this unfold.
Dean, Uckfield, East Sussex
Though I understand the power the McCann can inflict in mass media, I think the world is plenty of white blonde children so as to relate each event with the girl's lost.
adria, Barcelona, Catalonia
Oh please! A bag of clothes found 2 weeks ago and DNA tested in the UK already? Bags of old clothes littering laybys are two-a-penny everywhere in Europe. Why send this particular one for analysis? We'll be reading next that the McCanns threw the bag out of the hire-car window, on their way to the airport the day they left Portugal!
Jean Booth, Hague, Netherlands
I undestand that the parents keep on searching, even with non official investigators. Everything must be done !
