Blog: are Republicans internet luddites?
Having gatecrashed the Republican presidential contest, Mike Huckabee last night outshone his seven rivals in a TV debate marked by bitter exchanges over immigration.
The former Arkansas governor has used a combination of compassionate conservatism and charm to surge forward from back of the field in recent weeks without having to face the same degree of scrutiny of other leading candidates.
The latest opinion polls suggest that he has edged ahead of Mitt Romney to take first place in Iowa, where the nominating process will begin on January 3.
Campaigning on a hard-edged platform of being an "authentic conservative" on social issues by opposing abortion and gay marriage, this ordained Baptist minister demonstrated his softer side in an early clash with Mr Romney who had branded him a "liberal" on immigration.
"We're a better country than to punish children for what their parents did – we’re a better country than that," said Mr Huckabee as he defended a plan to give students born to illegal immigrants access to college scholarship schemes.
Mr Romney also had a bitter personal exchange with Rudy Giuliani, the frontrunner in national opinion polls, on that same issue of immigration which is becoming a touchstone for Republicans in this election.
The former New York mayor accused him of turning his official residence as governor of Massachusetts into a "sanctuary mansion" for undocumented workers despite the "holier than thou attitude" Mr Romney has since adopted on the subject.
"You did have illegal immigrants working at your mansion, didn't you?" asked Mr Giuliani, who added: "They were under your nose."
Mr Romney retorted sharply, saying Mr Giuliani was being "offensive" and should "know better than that". He said that he was unaware of the status of workers employed by a sub-contractor and asked if every homeowner should take the "un-American" position of demanding official papers from people who look different or have a "funny accent".
But that was probably Mr Romney's best moment last night. He was booed briefly by the audience as he tried to explain his previous support for gays openly serving in the US military before once again admitting that he had been wrong to back abortion rights.
He later floundered under attack from John McCain who declared himself "astonished" over Mr Romney's refusal to say if he would allow the waterboarding technique in interrogating prisoners.

I don't see why there isn't more press about why liberals would rather face ANYONE but Dr. Ron Paul. Much as we'd like politics to be positive, it is in fact ruled almost entirely by negatives. For instance, what's the biggest negative the Republican Party is facing in 2008? Iraq - a staggering 70% of people favor IMMEDIATE withdrawl from Iraq. Who is the only candidate that doesn't have that negative? Dr. Paul, who advocates using those trillions of dollars to secure our border (perhaps against Saudis who were 20 of the 24 terrorists in 9/11) and rebuild our crumbling infrastructure which is far more worrying than the loss of Social Security. Hm, full employment, withdrawl from Iraq and a huge boost to our economy from rebuilding our infrastructure - what Democrat wants to run against that. Hence the behavior of known liberal biased network CNN, who wants us to nominate either Guiliani or Romney - both of whose negatives are so high the copy practically writes itself!

Ok, who here actually watched the debate last night? Now that Mike Huckabee has cast himself as a top-tier candidateâhe needs to start receiving the scrutiny that other top-tier candidates receive. Everyone likes Mike because of his humor and his polished debate styleâbut is anyone paying attention to what he actually says? For example, last night he said that he would like to abolish the IRS. Of course, his remark drew a big cheer from the crowd and it sounds good in theory. However, how do you realistically abolish the IRS in any sort of a timely manner? The notion is ridiculous.
This is one example of many of the things that Huckabee says that âsound goodâ but really have no merit or value to them.

In what sense did John McCain win his exchange with Ron Paul over Iraq?Does being loudly booed by a large number of people constitute "winning".
If Ron Pauls attitude to the war is so unpopular, why does he receive more campaign contributions from the troops than any other candidate?
Fraser, Edinburgh,
the whole debate was a shame....
cnn did not give fair and equitable time for all candidates....only the ones that they like. its not democractic and not true journalism when you marginalize other candidates by not giving them hardly any questions or giving the hardest ones to answer.
if you research ron paul...he gets the most attention on youtube. i would have to guess that most of the 5000 questions were ron paul influenced. it was funny that some of the stands that ron paul took months ago and how the other candidates mock him are slowly mimicking some of his positions.
some of the questions, if allowed by the other candidates to answer them would show you the real differences between each of their platforms. but alas, opportunity lost.
not really....
we can not be a nation of sheep when you have the media guiding the questions and picking who the candidates are. follow the money as mike grave says. each of the media is own by the corporate elite. they have a vested interest in getting what they want. do you think ron paul shares their views? wake up america!!!!
we have been dumbed down by society, the media, our education system. we lack the ability to become critical thinkers. how the other people evaluated the debates really show the depth of their understanding....which is not very much. i challenge you to be a critical thinker. do your research.
if you think ron paul did an average performance compared to some....then evaluate why there wasn't enough questions thrown at him. its a tactic called "marginalizing" if you are aware of it...you would see it more apparent. read all the media articles....they marginalize because they fear a real change.
be a critical thinker...please.
look at ron paul...you tube, read his interviews (outside of the mainstream corporate media). take the red pill (ref matrix). wake up...the end of our empire is right around the corner....subprime, the falling of the dollar...the eroding of the constitution.
don't be sheep. wake up.
