We've made some changes
to The Sunday Times

BALI Greenpeace's flagship Rainbow Warrior arrived yesterday in Bali, where about 190 nations are meeting for UN climate-change talks that are taking place in Indonesia until December 14.
China insisted that it would not consider mandatory cuts on greenhouse gases, saying that the United States and other industrialised countries should take the lead in fighting climate change by being less extravagant.
China, which some believe has surpassed the US as the world's top emitter of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases, also questioned the fairness of binding cuts when its per capita emissions are about one sixth of Washington's. It said, too, that it has only been pumping pollutants into the atmosphere for a few decades, whereas the West has done so for hundreds of years.
“China is in the process of industrialisation and there is a need for economic growth to meet the basic needs of the people and fight against poverty,” said Su Wei, a climate expert and member of the Chinese Government's delegation.
“I think there is much room for the United States to think whether it's possible to change [its] lifestyle and consumption patterns,” Mr Su said. (AP)

The Katrina-related damage to New Orleans has NOTHING to do with âclimate changeâ and everything to do with incompetent local and state leaders- who were ALL Democrats by the way. The leaders of city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana knew for decades that the Lake Pochatrian and industrial canal levees, unlike the Mississippi River levees, werenât engineered to withstand anything over a class 3 hurricane, yet they did NOTHING to prepare for the certainty that a major storm would eventually strike New Orleans. The Gulf coast of the USA has been hit by many hurricanes since history has been recorded. There is a well established cycle of increased (both number and intensity) hurricane activity waxing and waning every 30-40 years. Katrina was not even close to being the strongest storm to strike the US mainland in the last century.
The Great Lake basins in North America were gouged by massive glaciers, which melted long before human activity could have possibly influenced climate. In comparison to the climate changes currently being recorded, the melting of the North American glaciers were a monumental event- all accomplished without human intervention. Since those glaciers melted without human intervention, how can we now be certain that the relatively modest climate changes currently observed arenât a part of the naturally occurring climate changes the Earth experiences every 10,000 years or so?

This is not a competition, EVERBODY needs to do there part. This is our home and our childrens home were talking about.

Since here lifestyle is mentioned, I give two examples in China.
Much less families have dryer, they would like to hang the washing out to dry. Maybe someone would laugh at them for causing such disordered scene. I know some community in US forbid their inhabitants to hang any washing out.
The other one is from CNN, China produces around 80 million cubic meters of solar powered hot water a year, taking 80% of the global market share. Solar powered hot water is taking off to such an extent in China now, around 1 in 10 households have solar heaters.
So letâs get it started, making progress is much better than gesture!
sven, Germay,
The comments RE: China should be judged less for its content and more for its message. That said, I highly doubt that even they think of this as a competition. Instead, what they are really suggesting is that "the West" has put us where we are, so "the West" should be the ones who lead the charge to do something about it! The other underlying point here is that even if they were to be the forerunners of a much-needed revolution, they require support from "the West" anyway, so...it really is, IMO, up to the US and EU to take charge on this initiative...everyone else, then, will most surely fall in line.

We must stop trashing our planet. No waiting until the eleventh
hour because then it will be too late.
All countries must join hands now. This is a problem ALL
countries need to work on. but we seem to be
waiting - waiting for what, THE END.
Jerry Scroggin, Phoenix, Arizona/USA
Well, we'll certainly give China's suggestion all the consideration it deserves.

Of course we all ned to do our share. Already industrialized countries cannot expect that only developing countries compromise in favor of the fighting against the climate exchange. North America and Europe need to practise what they preach. More public transport, more research on renewable energies, more equality... Sometimes I think that humans are egocentric and preffer to turn a blind eye on the possible destruction of our environment, our children and future generations environment. They are going to hate us for what we are doing if we don´t start doing something the sooner the better. Haven´we got any long term vision of the future, don´t we have brain to think? Less hypocrisy and more possitive efficient actions.
Cesar Gragera, Caceres, Spain
Oviously China needs to help cut omissions too - unfortunately, the Chinese have a good point. The American lifestyle is profligate and bad the world - yet many Americans seem to regard such a lifestyle as their God-given right, regardless of the cost to others.
As Katrina demonstrated, even the US can be affected negatively by climate change. This really is an issue where we will all find a way to work together and live, or die together.
The US needs to adapt its lifestyle, starting with dependance on the car.
FA, London,
Don't bicker, point fingers and procrastinate. Campaign for the return of the EV1 electric car and other such technologies and cut emissions.EVERYONE.
