Lord Black of Crossharbour was today sentenced to six and a half years in jail and given a $125,000 fine for fraud and obstruction of justice.
The former Telegraph chairman was found guilty in July for colluding with other Hollinger International executives to cheat shareholders out of $6.1 million (£2.98 million).
He will be forced to trade his luxurious life quaffing fine French wine on the terrace of his Palm Beach estate for a dormitory and $17-a-month job in an American jail.
The sentence was announced at a Chicago court today after prosecutors demanded an effective life-term of 24-30 years for the 63-year-old convicted fraudster because he has shown no sign of remorse during or after his trial. Black has continued to deny any wrongdoing, and claims the case against him was "rubbish" and a "vendetta".
David Radler, a former colleague, chose a less fractious approach and will face a lesser sentence after testifying against Black in court.
Judge Amy St Eve told the court today that that Black should not be treated as the leader or organiser of the fraud.
She said his former co-defendant Radler was “just as culpable”.
“The evidence demonstrated that his co-defendant Radler was calling as many shots and directing where the money was going,” she said.
Black was today told that he would be sentenced to 78 months in prison.
"He is in for a tough time," said Herb Hoelter, a sentencing consultant at the National Centre on Institutions and Alternatives, who advised jailed Sotheby's chairman Alfred Taubman and financiers Michael Milken and Ivan Boesky.
"One aspect is psychological. You were the CEO and now you are taking orders from a corrections officer who, but for the prison, would be a dairy farmer. It's an extreme adjustment," Mr Hoelter said. "It's a very difficult adjustment for family members as well because telephone calls are limited."
Lord Black, once the jet-setting chief of the world's third-largest newspaper empire, has been free on $21 million bail since his conviction in July on three counts of fraud and on charge of obstruction of justice.

Joe Mufferaw from London - Oh, how my poor heart bleeds.
The fawning sycophancy is an embarrassment.
No one is above the law.
A Proud Brit, London, United Kingdom
Everybody says "found guilty" ...But are you sure he is ?
Franz, Paris,
We'll compare his six and a half years with the sentence our "lost canoeist" gets, shall we? Who do we reckon will end up doing more per £ or $? Place your bets, ladies and gentlemen. (And how much personal taxation did he avoid? And in which countries?)
Daffers, Brighton, UK
One must ask who received the most economic punishment from the meltdown of Hollinger? Conrad Black himself is the answer. He is charged with stealing $6.1 million from the public company but with Hollinger's demise he has personally lost several hundred million dollars.
Joe Mufferaw, London, England
Black has previously said the charges are a massive smear job from A to Z, rubbish, hanging like a toilet seat around the prosecutors necks, a vendetta, and the latest genteel contribution um....a crock.
Black now says he's never insulted the judicial system.
Hmmm.....there's something wrong with this picture (or are we to believe those are compliments in Lordspeak?)
JFM, Ontario, Canada
No it wont work in Conrad's case because he is arrogant. Good for the courts! One more Fraudster off the streets.
Jason, Calgary, Canada
Good, i like a happy ending......

How disappointing. I was hoping for about twenty years. But sadly he was just too white and rich to serve a long prison sentence in the US.
John M, Stromeferry, UK
So Conrad Black, having been found guilty of defrauding investors of millions of dollars will go to prison for between 6 and 8 years. Now compare and contrast that with Eliot Spitzer, who extracted millions of dollars from investors â in the form of fines, pay-offs etc. â and was "made" Governor of New York. Thatâs justice?
MN, London, UK
Will he be stripped of his peerage?
Jerome Long, Milton, Wisconsin, USA
8 years is not much considering how much he nicked..
I would sit there with no resonsibilities for that amount of cash..
mark deberner, paris,
i am really sorry to read this article.
whatever conrad black did..yes...he did
according to prosecutors..he is an asset to the economic community...let him pay back in dollars and cents..and that is lesson enough...the prison is supposed to
rehabilitate...it will not work in conrad case...i rest my case...
