The top US military commander for Iraq and Afghanistan resigned last night after weeks of behind-the-scenes disagreements with the White House over the direction of American foreign policy.
Admiral William Fallon, the head of US Central Command, left his post a week after a profile in Esquire magazine portrayed him as a dove opposed to President’s Bush’s Iran policy.
The article, entitled The Man Between War and Peace, described Admiral Fallon as as a lone voice against taking military action to stop the Iranian nuclear programme.
Announcing the resignation, Robert Gates, the US Defence Secretary, dismissed as “ridiculous” any notion that the departure signalled that the US was planning to go to war with Iran. He said there was a “misperception” that Admiral Fallon disagreed with the Bush Administration’s approach to Iran. “I don’t think there were any differences at all,” Mr Gates insisted.
Pentagon insiders said that Admiral Fallon’s departure was more the result of a turf battle between him and General David Petraeus, the US ground commander in Iraq. Admiral Fallon was General Petraeus’s commanding officer but for months Mr Bush has deferred to General Petraeus, against the objections of Admiral Fallon, who is believed to have been advocating a speedier withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.
Admiral Fallon is also understood to have been pressing for a greater allocation of troops to Afghanistan, but has been frustrated at the reluctance of the Administration — and General Petraeus — to withdraw significant numbers from Iraq in the short term.
In a resignation statement from Admiral Fallon read out by Mr Gates, he said: “Recent press reports suggesting a disconnect between my views and the President’s policy objectives have become a distraction at a critical time and hamper efforts in the Centcom region.”
Admiral Fallon added: “And although I don’t believe there have ever been any differences about the objectives of our policy in the Central Command area of responsibility, the simple perception that there is makes it difficult for me to effectively serve America’s interests there.”
Mr Gates said that he had reluctantly agreed to the resignation but that it was “the right thing to do”. Admiral Fallon, the first naval officer to head Central Command, took up the post in March 2007, succeeding General John Abizaid.
Until a permanent replacement is nominated and confirmed by the Senate, Admiral Fallon’s deputy, Lieutenant-General Martin Dempsey, of the US Army, would take over Centcom.

One has to admire Admiral Fallon. So few military men have the courage of their convictions. Most are so concerned about their careers and that next star that they just go along with the failed policies.

After reading all of your comments, I must say I am glad you were all not around during WWII. Otherwise, we may have lost that war--or, perhaps you would have been glad of that?? History has shown that many presidents have either fired their generals during wartime, or accepted their resignations. Have you all forgotten about MacArthur who was fired by Truman--MacArthur, the hero of WWII was fired by Truman when he wanted to push past the 38th parallel in Korea, in the face of the threat by the Chinese to unleash an army of 1 million strong. Or how about Abe Lincoln's firing of his generals during the Civil War?? Lincoln fired General McClellan for repeatedly failing to press his advantage over Confederate troops, thereby prolonging the Civil War. Presidents must do what they believe is in the best interests of America, and as far as I can tell, they have performed their jobs well. Coincidentally, McClellan was nominatead for the presidency by, guess who, the Democratic Party.

The midterm removal of a sitting president is simply not constitutionally possible within even the wildest dreams of the irrelevant left's fantasies. Thus the only way any brakes can be applied to this course is through the purse. Congress can best help stop the stampede to war by doing what they do best, which is absolutely nothing. A complete lack of effective funding legislation through the summer is a given in advance of the election. So no worries folks, our own legislative lethargy can once again be counted on to thwart any rapid action, either good or bad.

Did he walk or was he pushed? Whatever the reason, well done Adm. Fallon. Perhaps more people need to stand up and let our leaders know that we do not agree with the war and the loss of life on both sides.

Unfortunately, it would appear that Admiral Fallon made the cardinal mistake of having a mind of his own, something that General Petraeus could never be accused of. And after reading the article in Esquire, I came away convinced that words such as hawk and dove have little meaning when applied to people like Fallon; rather, he is a pragmatic observer of human nature who understands the handling and use of diplomacy and power far better than his supposed masters in Washington.

Maybe he could help the Middle East by supporting voter registration/elections for Palestinians as well as helping Iraqis vote as well. There are 2 million Palestinian refugees over 18 who could vote. What would Al Quaeda say if Americans recognised the Palestinian refugees had the right to vote - and allowed their representatives to sit around the negotiating table?
With the $400 billion+ spent by the Pentagon, can they not find $92 million, to fund an Out of Country Voting (OCV) for Palestinian refugees? This is what was spent on OCV for 850,000 Afghan refugees. 1.3 million people voted in West Bank and Gaza elections - what about the 2 million Palestinian refugees? For any solution it's likely they would like a referendum.
Would it help out troops if we addressed this issue, and allowed the refugee representatives speak at the peace negotiations? Are we looking at all alternatives? Maybe Admiral Fallon is open to listening to new questions.

Bravo Admiral Fallon - better late than never.
Bush started his wars "because he could", and essentially for no better reason, and now that he's demob-happy, he might want "a spectacular" to end his tenure. Nobody else needs that. And the necessary money is also already spent twice over. Why should any more people, locals and Americans, have to die for Bush-and-Blair's vanity? They already lost the plot when they started to tell us all those lies/self-deceptions which come with the self-regarding lonely-hero pose. It's all been for the birds, and just wasted a shocking number of lives, and a shocking amount of money. Enough already.

Admiral Fallon,
I am a former Navy man and a Vietnam veteran.
You, sir, make me feel proud as a sailor and an American.
Thank you for the courage of your convictions.

i didnt think america made these kind of people anymore. the kind that actually is a real patriot working for his countrys best. so sad that he had to resign.
i will celebrate the day bush administration has to leave! it will be like when saddam hussein died, i will only feel joy!

Jim's right. Most Americans agree that invading Iraq was a serious mistake. I think rational individuals know that the US doesn't have the resources to invade Iran even if was serious about it. In any case, the hawks will be at the helm only for another 9 months or so. Hopefully our next administration will not be so much of an embarassment.

The gang of two that China and Russia are must love all of this chaos in the US military. One day it could open a door for both of them to send a "surprise message" to the USA when she's not looking. Come on USA clean up your act...the Bibles endtimes are not far away.
Graeme Gibson, Sydney, Australia
The USA needs to watch carefully that neither China nor her buddy Russia take advantage of all of this chaos in the US military. All of Americas military exhaustion and all of the fighting they seem to do with the White House might be an open window for China to move across the straits to Taiwan or for Russia to make a move somewhere.
Graeme Gibson, Sydney, Australia
I had forgotten there was anybody like this man left in the US Administration. He is so right in his convictions. Once Iran is attacked the US will have no control over the outcome and the outcome will not favour the US. And indeed why should it. Perhaps when chaos ensues, men like Fallon will be able to lead the way. God Bless the real people of America.
Margaret P CASEY, Ipswich, Australia
To the honorable citizens of the USA.
What your nation badly needs, at this junction of its history, is more of Admiral William Fallon. Admiral Fallon is a true patriot, a man of nobility, honor, and a conscience that is alive and functioning. Unlike the cabal of lobbyists pulling the strings in Washington.
economy between 5 & 7 Trillion dollar, i by far the biggest factor in the recession, that will soon be upgraded to a depression and donword spiral of the dollar, than think what a war with Iran will do to the prestige and economy to your nation. It is the same mobe that trumpeted and preched the dangers of a nuclear Iraq are at it again. They are the benefiaries of wars , housing industry collapse, higher gaz prices or other disasters that befallen the USA.
Wake up America and remove that cabal from the White house before you wake-up one day to find your country, is leased to its deptors, China and Japan, and your future generations curse you for your deep slumber
Isaak, Ottawa, Canada
Lone voice? What about the 300 million Americans (minus a cadre of chickenhawks) who don't want another war? Don't we count for something?
