President Bush warned Iran yesterday that if it did not stop arming and training Shia militia in Iraq then “America will act to protect our interests and our troops”.
During a speech in which he ordered an indefinite halt to US troop withdrawals from Iraq this summer, Mr Bush called Iran one of the two greatest threats to America in this century, together with al-Qaeda. His words echoed testimony from General David Petraeus, the US commander in Iraq, to Congress this week in which he described Iranian-backed Shia groups and the “malevolent” influence of Tehran as the biggest long-term threat to a viable Iraq.
Mr Bush said that he was following General Petraeus’s advice to halt withdrawals after July, when troop levels have been reduced to 140,000, roughly the same number deployed in Iraq before last year’s surge of additional troops. He said that General Petraeus — who called the situation in Iraq too fragile for further withdrawals — would have “all the time he needs” to evaluate further pullouts.
The decision means that Mr Bush’s successor will inherit Iraq with up to 140,000 troops still deployed.
Mr Bush spoke two hours after Ryan Crocker, the US Ambassador to Iraq, said that Washington was ready for talks with Iran. “We are prepared to do that,” he said. “If the Iranians are ready to sit we are going to point out what they are doing to undermine Iraqi security.”
Mr Bush announced that he would seek to relieve the heavy strain on the army by reducing the length of combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan to 12 months, down from the current level of 15 months. The change would take effect on August 1, and would affect US forces already deployed on the front lines.
Colin Powell, Mr Bush’s former Secretary of State and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the Gulf War, gave warning that the US military was “very, very stretched” by its commitments in Iraq and Afghanistan.” The burden would be “extremely difficult” for the US to sustain, he said.

If d government of Iran had d military power of d US no one would live in comfort & experience a peaceful world. This totalitarian regime has muffled the voice of democracy in Iran, backed terrorists groups in the Middle East & never been a reliable source for any information about Iran .
Maryam, Tehran, Iran
If US acted for its interest it may be understandable but when it acted arrograntly & unilaterally against universal norms it must be opposed. For d sake of mankind, the US with most nukes should take that first step to reduce its arsenal for gradual world disarmament. Will this happen????
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
USA is d world's only superpower with d most number of Nukes. It also has d world's most advance technology. Iran is believed to be developing nukes but this has not been proven. If yes, it still lacks an effective delivery system. Who is the threat to peace? US has used nukes b4 & threatens others.
Lim, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Just like iraq was? what a heap of crock! Bush himself is the biggest threat to the world ecomony with his brainless idea's, activities and his war hawk cabinet circling around him for new countries to invade and plunder for oil
Liam, Edinburgh, Scotland
Hey Bush, get your facts right.
The regime in Iran is your biggest threat not the nation of Iran. Most Iranian people are also
hostage to this god cursed dictatorial mullah regime. Keep this distinction clearly in your outbursts and don't forget that your actions are being watched by many Iranians whom are trapped between a dictatorial regime and a bligerent West.
Kaveh, London, UK
This is coming from the same people who were 100% convinced of WMDs in Iraq. I almost typed "administration" then I remembered that it is NOT the same administration, as practically everyone whose hands were stained red with blood from this war, has since comfortably retired to cushy jobs. They've been replaced by another batch of loyal cronies. Bush will be honored as a hero when he's gone, whatever history says, while the rest of America goes down the drain. He certainly won't suffer from post traumatic stress disorder from his 4th deployment to war, as the closest he ever came was a 4am surprise visit to Baghdad for champagne and caviar.
Ben, FL,
it was afghanistan first then iraq then north korea and now iran and soon venzuela. what is it with usa that has so many enemies everywhere, what on earth are they up to?
well they have to have enemies and if they don't have one create one to justify their state of the economy.
ebbi britt, valencia,
"Since when did it become the responsibility of the United States to 'police' Iraq".
When your lot with the other crusader, Tony Blair, decided to set in motion the chain reaction that has led to 400 - 600,000 deaths mainly of civilians. However, right wing nut jobs like you don't consider them as human becuase they are different from you.
The only WMD's found were the wish of Israel to have all Arabs (Christians & Muslims) cleansed and the cheap oil that is going to be used in your SUV's to choke the rest of the world.
Of course the Iranians are going to pursue advanced weapons. They look at Iraq which had non and was destroyed and Korea, which had them & is still sticking two fingers up. Any government would seek defence when being sorrounded by an enemy intent on stealing it's resources and committing genocide of it's citizens (be it autocratic, democratic or run by the military/industrial complex)
Peter, Solihull,
Hitler declared war on the US one or two days after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. We responded by acknowledging their was a state of war between us.
Wallace Edward Brand, Alexandria, VA, US
where does this ignorant belief amongst Americans come from that Europe cannot protect itself?
Because Europe can't. 1st. NATO is dominated by America, and America is the muscle behind it; if in fact the US was to pull out of NATO it would completely crumble. You claim that combined Europe has a larger military than teh U.S. counterpart; thats true, but thats irrelevent. The US is the primary party in all NATO actions, hands down. 2nd. Who cares about U.N. veto powers? If it did indeed actually mean something, then i geuss there would be no Iraq war right?
And Britain is NOT the 2nd most powerful military in the world, that title belongs to Russia
Kevin, London, UK
Bush is trying to scapegoat Iran for the US failure in Iraq. Bush knows history will not be kind to him for taking the US into an unnecessary and unprovoked war with Iraq that he couldn't win. So Bush is trying to blame Iran for his lack of success in Iraq.
Bush also knows he should pull the troops out of Iraq and end the war, but he is still trying to save face. The next administration will have to have the strength to do what Bush cannot do, that is, end the war.
marge, USA, alexandria, USA
I think it has been pretty well established that the other is the George W. Bush regime.
Andy Lovas, San Francisco, USA / California
This guy is so so dangerous. How can Iran be dangerous to the US. The only thing dangerous to the US is the state of the economy and the state of the returning soldiers. Poor America you deserve so much better. Thank god he will be out of power soon. Itâs only a shame that this tyrant cannot be prosecuted for all his crimes against humanity.
r vonne, Manchester, UK
Always picking on the little guys..
Blair, Worcester, United Kingdom
Please define the threat. In precise terms and with the supporting intelligence not gathered by means of torture. Mr. Bush, you are incapable of conducting meaningful talks with Iran. They will hem and haw until there is a new President to establish a relationship with. For all their bluster a peaceful world is more profitable to them than not. This, however, is what I predeict, Bush will invade iraq by October.
Louis Roundtree, Phoenix, Arizona
Bush will go down in history as one of the most incompetent Presidents in the history of the U.S. It is true that the invasion of Iraq never should have happened. Bush 'broke' it, and we have a responsibility to leave it in the most stable fashion possible. That said, the Iraqi government is not moving fast enough, and only a deadline will focus their attention. Clinton's short time line will leave it in chaos and we'll be there forever with McCain. Who knows what Obama will really do?
Iran is only making it more difficult to leave. Their government doesn't want a stable democracy next door, but an Islamist police state like their own.
Regarding nukes - While in custody, Saddam said that he would have restarted nuclear, biological and chemical research after sanctions were lifted. Would two enemies (Iran & Iraq) with nukes be better than one? That still doesn't justify the invasion, but makes one wonder what the alternative history would have been.
Tom S, Denver, Colorado USA
Pat Robertson just said (on MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann) that the "October Surprise" this year will be an attack on Iran.
I am so depressed. I think that, if Bush does this, he'll also declare Marshall Law and prevent the November election from proceeding.
PRAN, Los Angeles, CA, USA
As an ageing American male I am alarmed by Bush's warning to Iran. It may mean that our fool of a president is on the verge of ordering the bombing of a country that does not threaten us. Or if one sees our occupation of Iraq as being resisted in a war by proxy, then Bush is frustrated by our weakness in the proxy war.
Already we are in debt to the future, thanks to the wastrel in the White House. I hope to God Iran may be spared.
Ernest Werner, Trumansburg NY , USA
For god's sake! Hasn't there been enough war in the world started by the hands of the Americans? Iran's regime is terrible, but all this warmongering towards it is disgusting and will provoke WWIII if the threats are carried out? Can you blame the Iranian leadership for being paranoid given Bush's threats? I'm no fan of their regime, being a gay woman, but America really needs to stop threatening and intimidating countries around the world especially given its track record!
rach, reading, uk
Just for the record, after the comments from J Roberts from Manchester, I wanted to encourage any Europeans out there to help the US. From Tory leader David Cameron's speech to the Royal Institute of International Affairs :
Despite a long-standing commitment by all Nato members to spend at least two per cent of their gross domestic product on defence, only six out of 24 European members actually did so.
Mr Cameron said: "We have to improve Nato's military capability. Of the 2.4 million soldiers Europe has under arms, only three to four per cent are deployable in expeditionary operations."
Who will everyone pick on after Bush is gone?
Niki, The Hague, Netherlands
Does anyone really care about what this man has to say about anything? Really?
SantiagoDave, Santiago, Chile
The fact is Iran remains the last obstacle to Americaâs complete domination of this region. If Washington could force Iran to do its bidding its hegemonic ambitions in this part of the world including control over its resources would be attained. This, my friends, is the bottom line. This is why Iraq was invaded and occupied and this is why Iran is being groomed to go the same way.
M, Stockholm,
there is no room for compromise with Iran! we should not seek to reach any kind of deal with Iran as long as the human right situation has not gotten any betterment!
cty, zhejiang hangzhou, china
For all who are arguing about the islamist extremism in Iran, remember Saudi-Arabia? They're even worse than Iran, but you don't hear anybody arguing about "clearing up that country. And remeber where Osama Bin Laden originally came from...
Jonfinn, Oslo, Norway
I think the biggest threat to America is Bush himself
Ron, Watford, Uk
Inside track: If Bush is impeached he will bomb Iran, declare a state of emergency, martial law and postpone the 2008 elections. That's why the gutless Democrats are staying their hand.
Andrew Milner, Karuizawa, Japan
Surely there is a huge difference between what Bush and Petraeus are saying. Mr Bush called Iran one of the two greatest threats to "America" while Petraeus, described Iranian-backed Shia groups and the âmalevolentâ influence of Tehran as the biggest long-term threat to a "viable Iraq". These two observations do not mean that same thing as is implied in the piece.
Jim O'Sullivan, Sligo, Ireland
...... do not believe that the US was invaded or attacked by Hilter but we still entered the war. By this analysis the US should have stayed clear of that war also.
Keith, Houston, TX
Your right Hitler didn't invade or attack the US but Japan did. It bombed Pearl Harbour, who had signed a non aggression pact with Nazi Germany.
Andy, Stockholm/Chesterfield, Sweden / England
ed, Columbia: where does this ignorant belief amongst Americans come from that Europe cannot protect itself? Britain currently has the second most powerful military in the world, closely followed by several other European states. The combined EU military is much bigger than America's (bar the navy) and our military technology is on par with yours. Throw into the mix the fact that both Britain and France have nuclear weapons and are both members of the UN security council and you will see that we don't need your help to defend ourselves.
Oh and just one more thing.....in all of the wars Britain has been involved in recently the US military has caused more casualties to us than the enemy has, so I think we can do without your 'help'.
J Roberts, Manchester, UK
How do we know that Iran is training Shia militia in Iraq? Is this based on the same "intelligence" that told us Iraq had WMDs?
Paul, Sydney, Australia
Perhaps Barack Obama is right in saying that there is another way. Instead of pursuing isolationist policies, perhaps the US and countries like Iran can sit down and discuss what the differences are and maybe come to a greater level of understanding of each other. That alone may prevent unnecessary conflict. The strategy of pre-emption in Afghanistan and Iraq clearly has not worked, why not try an alternative strategy? It could possibly lead to a better outcome than what we have in Iraq and Afghanistan
Phil, Singapore,
first they came after the Afgans and the world watched and spoke softly and shook their heads.
next they went after the Iraqis and the world watched and spoke softly and shook their heads.
next they will go after the Iranians and the world will watch and speak softly and shake their heads.
yes one by one until its your turn. every country has its evil. every country does not fit to exist in this new system. If you are not with it, you are against it. any questions?
Mark , Orlando, USA
The reason that the US is the police in these situations is that no other country has the guts. How is this evil any different that before WWII? One poster counts this as the 16th US invasion since WWII but does not count WWII. Why? I do not believe that the US was invaded or attacked by Hilter but we still entered the war. By this analysis the US should have stayed clear of that war also.
On the other hand I agree that WE should not be there or anywhere else in the world (especially Europe). Bring all of our forces home and protect our home land. But just remember, World, you are on your own the next time something big kicks up. And since you will all stick your heads in the sand until it is too late, it will come your way sooner rather than later.
Keith, Houston, TX
Having wrecked Iraq and Afghanistan, calling other countries evil, it is little wonder that the Bush administration is do disliked and hated.Take the reporting of just one village in Afghanistan, which had 80 occupants, all related. After the US bombed it, only two remanied alive, Are they going to be glad that the US came to their country, or will they hate the US?Think of nearly 80 of your own family dying in such a way and what are your feelings about that? I am asking this question of those who agree with Bush.
margie , victoria , australia
It is truly sad and frightening to see the willful ignorance of so many people. The anti-American, anti-Bush hatred and propaganda reminds me a LOT of European fascism (and their Arab partners) in the early 1900's.
I hope there is not another World War but we seem doomed to repeat history. Before WW II we had Neville Chamberlain; today we have the American Democrats and their socialist buddies worldwide.
If America is destroyed, EU, who will rescue YOU? Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Islamist friends have made it clear they want to destroy the US and Israel ... then nobody will be left to stop their Sharia state (wouldn't THAT make ya'll happy)!
ed, Columbia,
George Bushs' administration has been and will continue to be the biggest threat to America and her Allies with this ill conceived fiasco in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Total absence of forward strategic planning and ignorance of cultural sensibilites in those regions have merely served to inflame existing tensions in the region and amongst allot of our muslim neighbours closer to home.
If our leaders and their staff are really as educated, informed and capable as they make themselves out to be , their alterior motives are truly scary and a real evil threat to everybodys' future.
Rob Mc Hardy, Paris, France
not considering Israel as a threat is a mistake. American will regret after this.
Moojave, Dili, Timor Leste
So Bush isn't go to give the "stay out of Iraq" speech to Saudi Arabia.......................? And now Syria are.......what? Doesn't he remember the "axis of evil" anymore? But he is still going to rebuild New Orleans......isn't he?
Harry Frame, Alice Springs, Australia
"Bush calls Iran one of two greatest threats to America"
'One' of the two greatest threats. The first is Iran and second... Iraq? Mr Bush probably thinks Iraq is still a threat. There is a possibility of Saddam's early resurrection.
jayil, london, uk
Then again he told a whole stack of lies about 'Eye-raq' so why should we believe him about 'Eye-ran'
Listen America, you gave him the full toy box, not once but twice. Look what he did with it. Don't come on here preaching about world threats now because you are the biggest. You and the strangely nuclear armed but unpoliced Israel......
Pu Li, Guangxi,
Dear Fellow Concerned beings across the globe,
All the people know ALL the problems. WHAT is it YOU are DOING to change it? We CAN see the world in crisis coming. OK, maybe, but what solutions are we exploring?
WHAT CAN WE ALL DO AS A COMMUNITY TO CREATE SOLUTIONS?
This heart is DOING all one can by writing, reading, staying informed, informing, burning DVD's, talking it up everywhere in a day, writing congress critters & senate toads, faxing, e-mailing, and calling to follow up with one persons opinion.
Every snow flake is integral in the whole storm. The storm would not be complete without the One! Kind of like, one for All, and ALL for One! We are a world of the same spiritual beings having a human experience here. It is easy to understand from that perspective. Let us choose to stop hyping the fear and start DOING something to change the direction the ship is going into.
There is still time as it is the right time NOW to go out and DO your dang best to PLANT a Victory garden!
Dr Jay, Durango, Colorado
The US had no right or reason to invade Iraq, and as long as they stay there they can expect to be shot at. The Iranians are simply looking after their own interests in their own neighbourhood. If the US wants to protect their fine military men and women then take them back home where they belong. This is US invasion Number 16 since the 2nd World War. Who is the aggressor?
Chris, Cape Town, South Africa
The biggest threat to U.S. interests in the world is George W. Bush. For me it is incomprehensible that a man like that has not been impeached.
Klaus Muller, Geneva, Geneva
Tom is so naive when it comes to "our interests".
Your fine men and women are dying because your president sent them to Iraq on the wave of a massive deception that the American people fell hook, line and sinker for.
Bush is responsible for their deaths. Iran didn't ask them to move them in next door. Stop trying to brush off the blame for once onto another state and accept that the invasion of Iraq was wrong and the state of Iraq is a direct result of American incompetance and greed in its pursuit of oil, gas and hegemony in the middle east.
rxr, crewe,
The two greatest threats to America are the sitting President and the Congress-neither of which adheres to the Constitution. Rome has fallen thanks to this Administration and the havoc its desire to maintain hegemony via an illegal, ill conceived war has wrecked on the economy through maipulations orchestrated by the Federal Reserve.
Susan, Michigan, USA
I agree , send in the Marines and lets show the the Iranian President what goes around comes around. President Bush is clear that Iranian policy is causing damage to the USA and it better change it's policies or face the music. The paradox is that the peole in IRAN hate this autocratic dictator so the USA will be welcome.
jerry mccullough, St.Catharines, CANADA
Bush and Cheney will pull "an October Surprise" as Bush I and William Casey CIA Director named by Reagan after this sucessful Gambit did against President Carter, negotiating with Ayatolla Houmeni to hold U.S. Embassy Hostages in Tehran... until after Election.
This time Cheney will have Israel Bomb Iran and U. S. will Join a Bombing campaign against "additional centrifuges' for processing uranium put in service recently?
Robert, Tampa, USA/florida
Reading a lot of the comments above it is cristal clear that despite all the warning signs most americans and all of Europe has absolutely no conception as what they are up against.
The mindset and blind devotion of extremist Islam, it's destain and intolerence of other beliefs but its own and it's worship of holy death is so unimaginable to them as to be dismissed as not within the realm of reality.
The president of Iran openly has publicly said that he believes he is chosen by god to hasten the return of the Mahaadi, he has also said that if a few million Muslims must pave the pay with their lives then so be it.
Unfortunately and not long in coming I fear that only a further atrocity commited in the name of Allah dwarfing the suffering and death seen in the events of 9/11 may awaken the west from its stupified state.
Mark, Bournemouth, UK
HE is the greatest threat to America.
A.Menius, Salisbury, NC
The ignorance expressed here, particularly by Americans in regard to Iran is astounding.Long before Pres Bush took office Iran was a problem. They are a totalitarian theocracy,do you understand what that means? Are any of you familiar with history, and about absolute power's effect on leaders? You are so busy hating Bush your ignoring FACTS.Well here's a fact for you, come January 2009 we're going to have a new Pres, possibly a Democrat, and guess what, Iran will still be a problem.
They are developing nuclear weapons, and they already have missiles to deliver them across most of Europe, middle east and the near far east. This 19th century logic of "not in our back yard" is absurd. Did you learn nothing from two world wars?
Even the Iranian people know their government is a problem.Just to focus on one aspect of their government, do you ever see any high profile women in the Iranian gov? They suppress women's rights, that alone should give you a hint. But of course it's all Bush's fault
Ian, Austin, TX, USA
I second that John.
Hasan Rashid, Chico, CA, USA
Interesting that it is one of the only countries left that converted oil currency to Euro....and a great distance from the U.S. I wonder how the threat assessment would change if U.S. interests didnt include oil?
For crying out loud...take one percent of the money spent on terrorism and the axis of evil and put it towards solar, wind and battery technology...and the U.S. interests in the middle east would be gone.
This little speach just raised gas to $4. Thanks W
Steve, Modesto, Ca
"Our Interests" refers to the protection of our fine military men and women are being killed by Iranian funded insurgents, and to the huge number of U.S. Tax dollars that are being spent in an attempt to stabilize Iraq for the Iraqi people.
Tom , Charleston, U.S.A.
I can think of a lot greater threats to America:
1) Recession
2) The collapse of the dollar
3) Hyperinflation
4) The US trade deficit
5) Fascism
6) Loss of America's rights
President Bush is the greatest threat to America this century.
It's clear that the Bush administration is recklessly pursuing agression towards Iran: http://youtube.com/watch?v=jWr5Wl-mev0
Jake, Salt Lake City, UT
If we are getting closer to the "Truth" then perhaps he will finally get to "... Bush's interests" and not "our" interests.
Steve, Florida,
That's because we, both Iraq and the US, are in this together at this point.
Robert VanCamp, Portland, USA
The first threat is Bush himself.
Orval Weckel, Sitka, Alaska
Bush is one of the two greatest threats to America, tieing global warming. There isn't a man alive that I despise more.
Mike Bilotti, erie, pa
I have to say the biggest threat to world security (not that Iran and Israel are not out of line on bio/nuclear technologies) is the short sightedness and aggressive posture this Administration has exhibited over eight years.
The world is much too complex to 'managed' by dropping ordinance on it to get your point of view across.
The constant banter about US security being paramount ( I am an American and live here) has been abused through fear mongering to a ridiculous extent by sections of the US media and the whitehouse. There IS a threat, and the action in Iraq has made it worse.
'
Time t o STOP, THINK, TALK and make measured responses
ivan, san jose, USA, CA
Honestly...I think Bush is (and has been) one of the greatest threats to America
Jack, CA,
so once again, the american people are being led down a path that forces an "enemy" to prove that they are not doing something that Washington says they are doing but have no proof (which is why they demand negative proof from those they accuse). Iran is not the problem in Iraq. The US is. If the Iraqis really wanted what the US was offering, do you think they would still be fighting against it?
ron, Asheville, NC, USA
The only reason the US stays in Iraq is to prevent Iran from taking it over, along with the oil fields.
Dave, Sebastopol, USA
The greatest threat to America.............
IS GEORGE BUSH!!!!!!!!
His failure to regulate the banking and financial industry is going to cause more damage to the American people than any muslim terrorist ever could
Matt, London, UK
The interests of the Iraqi people should be no concern of the USA.
With a crisis in housing, and our own economy in a recession, the last thing we need is to burden our financial resources to protest these people, who should be able to take care of their own coultry themselves.
Shoshiru Honda, Philadelphia, Pa.
Are you going to conscript millions of young men to fight a war, Mr Bush? Because the Iranians will.
Shirley Jackson, Warsaw, Zagreb, Brussels, European Union
finally he is talking sense
Iran should be the greatest threat in my opinion, lts like allowing terrorists to creat an A-bomb
john doe, ellington, texas
American interests are global interests
Laura, New Orleans, LA
I see it as he is about to start something that he cannot finish again, costing Americans more money, and putting our country in greater danger by not being able to have our military here to defend this land. I hope whoever takes over has more common sense than Bush and Cheney, and at least has the American people in mind by taking care of our own backyard.
GG, Vancouver , Washington
A comment on "SPIN": Pres. Bush, "...Iran one of the two greatest threats to America in this century"... what the General said, ..."General David Petraeus, the US commander in Iraq, who said Iran posed one of the greatest threats to stability in the region." I don't think this president deserves a retirement package!
John Fenske, Homer, Alaska
Since when did it become the responsibility of the United States to 'police' Iraq. Having suffered untold costs both in human life and monetariliy, it is high time that the Iraqis take charge of their own affairs, regardless of what faction (shia, kurd, others) are causing chaos. If are interests and troops are in harms way while in Iraq because of Iranian assistance, then bring home our troop and let the Iraqis deal with Iran. Sorry Iraqis....The gravey trains stops here!
Mike, Glendale, USA, Arizona
Itâs not "Mr. Bush;" itâs "President Bush". I might not like him or agree with him on everything, but as he is still President, I'm still going to respect the office that he holds.
James, Washington DC,
The two current greatest threats to America are Bush and Cheney. November can't come soon enough.
Alexandra Jones, Raleigh, NC
For the first time Bush has stated "...our interests" and not the interests of Iraq and the Iraqi people.
John, Brescia, Italy
