A grizzly bear who became a Hollywood star could be put down after killing his trainer with a single bite to the neck.
The grizzly, named Rocky, who stands 7ft 6in (2.28m) tall and weighs 50 stone (318kg), has been described as “the best working bear in the business”. He can be seen in the new film Semi-Pro when Will Ferrell’s character wrestles Dewey the Killer Bear to promote his basketball team.
But a training session at the California compound of Predators in Action, which provides exotic animals to Hollywood, ended tragically on Tuesday. Three handlers were working with Rocky when he lunged at Stephan Miller and bit him on the neck.
“It was just an initial single bite. There was no other further aggression,” said Maurice Moore, of the San Bernardino fire department. “He was used to people, used to these trainers. This happened to be a sad accident.”
The two uninjured handlers were able to use pepper spray to force the bear back into his chain-link pen.
The 39-year-old victim was an experienced animal trainer with credits for such films as The Jungle Book: Mowgli’s Story and The Island of Dr Moreau. He was a cousin of Predators in Action owner Randy Miller, the stuntman who wrestled Rocky as Will Ferrell’s body-double in Semi-Pro.
Randy Miller won a World Stunt Academy Award for wrestling tigers in the 2000 blockbuster Gladiator and has performed stunts with his animals in such films as The Postman and The Last Samurai.
Randy Miller praised the bear in an interview in February with the San Bernardino Sun, but added: “If one of these animals gets a hold of your throat, you’re finished.”
Predators in Action keeps four African lions, four tigers, a black leopard, a cougar and one other grizzly bear on its 55-acre property in the San Bernardino mountains east of Los Angeles.
The company’s website says Rocky and the second grizzly, named Dakota, “have worked on some of the wildest jobs ever done”.
“They are world famous for wrestling scenes they have done in films and live shows. These bears are hard working and known for long runs, great action and staged attacks. They are good around people but can look extremely dangerous.” Rocky’s fate will now be decided by local animal care officials.
Denise Richards, who works with wild animals at nearby Moonridge Zoo, said trained animals that turn on their handlers are often destroyed. “You can train them and use as many safety precautions as you can, but you’re still taking a chance if you’re putting yourself in contact with them,” she said.
“It’s still a wild animal. Even though it may appear that the bear attacked for no reason, there was a reason. I’m sure Randy understands why it happened. They’re not cold-blooded killers.”

No, the bear should not be destroyed. This sounds similar to the incident that happened to Roy of Siegfried and Roy. Animals are wild and they can behave unpredictably. That is their nature.
carol, ann arbor, u.s.a.
I believe this was just a tragic accident like when Steve the crocodile hunter was killed by a sting ray, did anyone destroy the stingray, no as this was not an intentional act if we take the risks we except the consiquences and that was there choice and they would not want the bear to be destroyed
Denise Kennedy Scott, Lancashire, England
Rocky has been bred for this Hollywood lifestyle-he does not naturally crave fame and fortune-he is only in this position because of humans' insistence on having "animal stars"-if he was in the wild, he would not be subjected to this. It is a shame that humans are not killed for killing humans!
Nicki Hill, Nottingham, England, UK
NOOOOOOOOOOOO, the beautiful creature named Rocky shall NEVER be destroyed, period. He really didn't mean it. Remember he is such a wild animal and never hurt anyone until that day he killed his trainer for some reasons. Maybe he smelled the tiny blood on him---who knows? PLEASE let him live!!!!
Lynne, Gautier, USA
Animals should be allowed to live their natural lives without intereference, abduction and manipulation. Those who don't respect animals and their ways may suffer adverse consequqences and I don't see why then an animal should be destroyed for responding in frustration.
Anita Young, Hadleigh Suffolk, United Kingdom
no matter whether the bear was bred in captivity or not, he & others like him remain wild animals. they should not be demeaned by being made to 'work' for the benefit of humans, they should stay where they belong - in the wild. if you enter the lions lair, expect to get eaten. let the bear live
donna michele hammersley, north walsham, norfolk, united kingdom
I agree with Thomas
Ashlie, Onalaska,
1999 i wresled dakota in the same ring miller died.and at hollywood park.randy miller is all class loves those animals and saved hunderd of others.i knew the risk but even playing that bear knoced me silly.those trainer are men who know the risk. google man vs bear dominic menaldi..look at vidio
dominic, Huntington Beach, u s a
This would be a horrible mistake to kill the bear. It is "our" fault to think that a wild animal can be expected to be as a pet. When we do there are always possibilities that something like this could happen. Why do we provoke this kind of treatment upon caged animals without understanding.
Thomas, Mendoza, Argentina
Stephan Miller's death was a sad loss for his wife, two kids and many friends, including me. I am upset that he is being described as a "trainer" when in fact he was NOT an animal trainer. I believe that the trainign team or publcist thereof is hiding this very important fact. Must be investigated.
Johnny, Los Angeles, USA
It's an unfortunate tragedy, but the bear needs to be euthanized.
Jama, Atlanta,
The bear should not be killed. He is a magnificent animal. He was acting according to his nature, and I am sure his trainers understand that.
C. Goodman, Utica, U.S.A.
Thats just arrogant and wrong to put down a bear for acting like a bear. If they want something that acts like a teddy bear go buy a teddy bear. Stop using the poor creature for entertainment and fun. Once he does something "wrong" he gets punished and thats it. Sick. Its just slavery.
cat, UK,
Rocky i s an extraodinary animal...i might offer the solution of semi-retirment with more training rather than euthanasia as an alternative. Remember the las Vegas tiger attack of the Sigfried & Roy cat...It was not destroyed...Animals deserve a second chance just as humans...Let Rocky live....
James Shaver, Greenwood, USA
Another example why animals belong in the WILD not on screen. This incident is not the bear's fault. It's the people who are so arrogant to think that they rule nature without consequences.... Putting this animal down is the most stupid move I've ever heard of... When you play with fire you CAN hurt
Hunny Solo, Roosendaal, Netherlands
Please don't kill Rocky, I'm sure his trainer would want him to live. Humans asked extraordinary things of Rocky for our entertainment, depriving him of the life most bears lead. He learned and obeyed, until something we don't understand happened. Let him live out his life in a zoo or sanctuary.
mary hayes, middleburg, virginia , usa
I think that you need to get all the facts before making any kind of decision. I do not feel that randy should be destroyed. He is a bear after all and he was doing what bears do. When working with wild animals there are risks and everyone involved is very aware of the risks.
TC, San Pablo CA
Teresa, San Pablo, USA
animals are animals but i think that the grizzly attack was an accident because bears tend to destroy their food (predators) into pics and it was just a bite in the neck and might of just been an accident
ashley, lompoc, ca
bers are bears
ashley, lompoc, ca
He should not be killed.. A bear is only being a bear.. he shouldn't work in films anymore, cuz maybe he can't
thandle it. But I am sure his trainer respected that and would not want him put down.!
stephanie , Hollywood,
The bear might have killed someone, but he wasn't stalking him. Why it happened know one will ever know. I feel bad that Rocky did that but he did not do it on purpose. Everyone needs to leave Rocky alone, and his trainer also. His trainer is going threw alot right now just give him some space.
D. Ryan, Wintersville, US
Please do not destroy the animal. I am sure there is a reason for the incident. Like Siegfried & Roy's White Tiger, the tiger was not trying to hurt Roy, but rather to protect him because some woman in the audience was snapping picture at the show. Animal is not known to kill unless freightend
ann Lamb, Los Angeles,
As others have said, this is a wild animal. People just can't leave well enough alone. This is an exceptional animal and should not be destroyed.
Judy Cota, Silver Lake, WI, USA
This was an unfortunate accident, not unlike the Steve Irwin incident. Except the stingray wasn't "trained". Even if you done it a million times, there is never room for the tiniest error when dealing with a wild animal.Especially one that can eat you. Let the bear be. It wasn't his fault.
M.Carr, Carefree, usa
Rocky is a bear that obviously has had good credibility in working on films in the past. For God sake no way should he be destroyed. I'm sure there was a reason for what he did and like the article says the trainer I'm sure knew what it was. There are always risks taken...please let him live!!!!!
Amy Littleton, Bedford, USA
Bears are exactly that, wild. If people want to interact with them they should expect to deal with the consequences. I don't think the bear should be killed. It was just being natural.
NR, new hudson, usa
If you are thrown by a bolting horse and you're killed, should the horse be killed, too? Unless it can be proven that the killing was premeditated, the grizzly should simply be kept out of further interaction with humans.
Tony Eberts, New Westminster, Canada
Rocky the bear should be destroyed. He has killed a human being and should not be allowed to live.
Sandra , Canyon , United States
Rocky is no more a "killer grizzly" than a cute little actor. He needs to retire to a humane sanctuary run by people who understand he is a bear and are able and willing to provide him with the proper, safe environment suitable for a bear, including the company of other bears.
A.G. Anderson, Reno, US
eugene: I second that comment wholeheartedly.
Robert Greene, Florida, USA
I just can't bear it.
Animals belong in the wild.
Let's leave the wild alone and let it grow in peace with minimum invasion, and then just for scientific research.
Those are just the bear facts.
Please, bear with me.
