Hugo Chávez accused the party of the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, of sharing the same ideals as Adolf Hitler and said that he may confront her at a summit of Latin American and European leaders in Peru on Friday.
The Venezuelan President criticised Mrs Merkel after she told an interviewer that Mr Chávez did not speak for all of Latin America.
Mr Chávez described Mrs Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union party as “the same right wing that supported Hitler and fascism”. “Ms Chancellor, you can go to...” he said, before adding: “Because you are a lady, I won't say any more.”
The President joked during a weekly broadcast that Ms Merkel might respond by telling him to “shut up” — as the Spanish King Juan Carlos did when Mr Chávez criticised the former Spanish Prime Minister José Maria Aznar at a summit last year.
Mrs Merkel's spokesman, Thomas Steg, said that the Chancellor would not add to what she told the German news agency DPA: that no single country could harm overall relations between the European Union and Latin America.
“President Chávez does not speak for Latin America. Every country has its own voice, with which they pursue their own interests,” Mr Steg quoted Mrs Merkel as saying. “The comments of President Chávez speak for themselves,” he added. (AP)

I am Venezuelan.
1) The current motto in Venezuela, introduced by Chavez and a must in many events is "Socialism, Fatherland or Death"
2) Oil prices were $13p/b when Chavez arrived, our presidents' popularity has ALWAYS depended on oil prices, but his is dropping fast (crime, corruption, POVERTY)
Ramon, Valencia,
Every time Mr. Chavez runs off at the mouth, he reminds me of Nikita Krushchev and his pounding of the shoe on the podium at the United Nations.
"We will bury you!" Uh-huh.
At least Mr. Krushchev was rooted well enough that he wasn't afraid to visit the steeltowns of western Pennsylvania.
Dave, Pittaburgh,
Chavez has a permanent chip on his shoulder. How dare anyone say he doesn't speak for all of Latin America? Hello! He doesn't speak for all of Latin America. His childish rants show his true personality. He should be told to shut up every time he opens his mouth.,

Niel, Berlin, did you forget West Germany was under the US protection and East Germany occupied by Soviet Union? Do you remember Cold War and the Wall of Berlin?

Merkel - whose party supported the Pinochet putch in Chile, the Argentinian generals, the 2nd. generation Bavarian president of Paraguay (who made it a habit to cut his opponents into little pieces) and the cleptocrats that paved the way for Chavez in Venezuela, should talk less and learn more.
Niels, Berlin, Germany
I'm sorry, but I don't see how this could have happened. Anyone who reads the Guardian knows that the British are the only people on the face of the Earth who ever invoke Hitler.

Steve from Toronto. Uribe is OK in the eyes of the Colombians. Chavez is most certainly not.
James, Monteria, Colombia
This is typical, especially from the European right. Despite Venezuela's success in reducing poverty rates in the last decade since Chavez was elected, European politicians feel they have the right to meddle in Latin American politics. But let me guess, Uribe is ok in the eyes of the European elites
Steve, Toronto,
Hugo is more and more marginalized - even the millions he funnels into neighbouring countries and terrorist groups don't buy him a very wide audience any more. It is likely that he will turn more and more to police and military. Nationalist-socialist tyrants usually do. What a buffoon.
Brett, Stettler, Canada
Who's driving Venezuela, Mr Chavez?
That's what I would ask Chavez if I were Angela.
RobD, Bracknell, UK
Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Fueher can be translated as "one people, one state, one king". The motto is also very British. The British king is also the head of the Church of England.
Chavez is stupid and Ms. Merkel made well not reply him.
tony, paris,
If Obama is nominated, Hillary's elderly, female and middle-aged blue-collar white voters will switch to McCain. They feel uneasy about Obama's pastor debacle and some controversial statements of his wife Michelle. To many Obama (although decent and smart) seems a light-headed promise-giving novice.

Mr Garrido, an independent analyst in Venezuela said in 2006: "The whole country [Venezuela] will be geared towards the motto: one leader - one party - one ideology...I recall having heard something similar before, a long time ago, when I was very young: "Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Führer"...
