President Bush has admitted to The Times that his gun-slinging rhetoric made the world believe that he was a “guy really anxious for war” in Iraq. He said that his aim now was to leave his successor a legacy of international diplomacy for tackling Iran.
In an exclusive interview, he expressed regret at the bitter divisions over the war and said that he was troubled about how his country had been misunderstood. “I think that in retrospect I could have used a different tone, a different rhetoric.”
Phrases such as “bring them on” or “dead or alive”, he said, “indicated to people that I was, you know, not a man of peace”. He said that he found it very painful “to put youngsters in harm’s way”. He added: “I try to meet with as many of the families as I can. And I have an obligation to comfort and console as best as I possibly can. I also have an obligation to make sure that those lives were not lost in vain.”
The unilateralism that marked his first White House term has been replaced by an enthusiasm for tough multilateralism. He said that his focus for his final six months in office was to secure agreement on issues such as establishing a Palestinian state and to “leave behind a series of structures that makes it easier for the next president”.
Mr Bush is concerned that the Democratic nominee Barack Obama might open cracks in the West’s united front towards Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. At the EU-US summit in Slovenia, he pressed for tougher sanctions against Iran unless it agreed to suspend its uranium enrichment programme verifiably: “They can either face isolation, or they can have better relations with all of us.”
Mr Bush told The Times that when his successor arrived and assessed “what will work or what won’t work in dealing with Iran”, he would stick with the current policy.
Shaul Mofaz, a hardline Israeli minister, has suggested that a military strike on Iran is “unavoidable”. But Mr Bush said: “We ought to work together, keep focused. His comments really should be viewed as the need to continue to keep pressuring Iran.”
The President was keen to bind his successor into a continued military presence in Afghanistan and Iraq, but offered only cautious optimism about a recent decline in violence. Asked about corruption allegations dogging Hamid Karzai, the Afghan President, Mr Bush insisted: “I have found him to be an honest man.”
He also offered words of encouragement for another ally, Gordon Brown, whom he will meet on Sunday. He said that he needed no advice on coping with political adversity. He is “plenty confident and plenty smart, plenty capable — he can sort it out”.
But he delivered a thinly veiled warning to Mr Obama that his promises to renegotiate or block international trade deals were already causing alarm in Europe and beyond.
“There is concern about protectionism and economic nationalism,” he said. “Leaders recognise now is the time to get ahead of this issue before it becomes engrained in the political systems of our respective countries.”
Acknowledging that his refusal to ratify the Kyoto Protocol once created consternation in Europe, he said that there was now a recognition that that richer countries needed to “transfer out of the hydrocarbon economy”. He insisted, however, that any binding emission targets would have to include China and India to be workable.
The President knows that Republican nominee-in-waiting John McCain will have to distance himself from the current Administration. "He's an independent person who will make his decisions on what he thinks is best."
Asked if the US is ready for a black president, Mr Bush says: "I think the fact that the Democratic Party nominated Barack Obama is a statement about how far America has come.
"Having said all that, it's going to be important for the American people to figure out who can handle the task of the 21st Century. It's a challenging job."

It's the 2nd week of November and we are so happy the disaster known as G. W. Bush is on his way out! We have a wait and see attitude about Obama - there are certain things he has said and done that have made us nervous, but the mere fact of his literacy and rationality make us feel better already!
xtina, Chicago, USA
Bush Bush Bushed,
What a little man of so great a dismal failure. He was a man
that failed in everything he touched. Even the presidency was handed to him by his fathers friends. Little man of little ideas you caused much pain and suffering to millions and the death of thousands of americans.
arthur buonamia, Shanghai, China
All I can say is when you vote, there are bigger issues today in 2008 than Gay Marriage and Abortion. Think about that when voting and understand that the last 8 years of Republican administration has trashed an economy and cost the lives of soldiers and innocent civilians a like.
Mark, Toronto, Canada
OK, let's get real. World Com, Global Crossing, Enron and finally the Asset Backed Corporate Paper generated by the Sub Prime Mortgage Swindle which has spread Toxic Assets around our Planet.
When do we arrest bush & Cheney?
William J. Doyle, Toronto, Canada
President Bush is concerned that Obama might open cracks in the West's "united front" against Tehran? HILARIOUS! Obama is proposing that the US **join** the EU in it's negotiating efforts!
Dave, Boston, MA, USA
George Bush is the worst president in history. He has damaged our country gravely with his violation of our laws and the principles for which our soldiers fight. The only thing worse than Bush was Alberto Gonzolez and David Addington legal opinions.
T, Yadley,
Hi, I am from the great state of Texas and I am very proud of not having voted for George W Bush either time. I don't understand how he ever became Governer of Texas much less President. I want people of the world to know that not everyone was bamboozled by this moron.
Lynn, San Antonio, USA
I forgot to mention that my nickname for Donald Rumsfeld is Donald Dumbsfeld. Need I say more? How could someone so incompetent be appointed as Secretary of Defense. Oh wait, he was appointed by an incompetent President!
Lynn, San Antonio, USA
Bush is not misunderstood, he is understood only too well as being the worlds greatest terrorist. As a first step towards controlling terrorism he should have shot himself. Sadly all terrorism has its roots in the English speaking world + Israel.
Fred, Auckland,
To those fellow americans who are so proud of George Bush and Ronald Reagan I say this: you now get a chance to enjoy life in the economy they created for you: broke, indebted by trillions to pay for military adventures, with a middle class falling fast into poverty. Hope you like it, you voted for
aaron, Westchester, USA
So Bush doesn't regret attacking a country innocent of weapons of mass destruction and killing hundreds of thousands of innocents... he regrets his rhetoric. How thoughtful of him to share that with us! Who cares!
louise, brighton, east sussex
Both Ayla and Jeff fail to see the ratio involved here, it is true, more people have died from terrorists in the last week than on the railways in the past year. But does this mean the railways are safer? Please read the book: Systems Thinking in the Public Sector by John Seddon, just fab!
Hannah Brown, Sheffield,
To the people citing the deaths of ppl at the hands of terrorists- many more have died in iraq and afghanistan, of your own and other citizens, than ever were killed by islamic extremists.
ayla, london,
Int'l friends: in case you haven't noticed, some neo-con group has mobilized the "hard core faithful" to comment here. The whole world has seen the truth - but for others it is just too painful to face. Have faith; we'll elect Obama.
Jeff , delray Beach, usa
Do either Bush or Blair regret the despotic rout of the Democratic process in which they revealed in July 2002 that "Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy?"
Anton-Scott Goustin, Detroit, USA
I can't believe that the USA might possibly elect McCain after having Bush. I don't know what people are thinking. Bush has been our worse President and McCain is a carbon copy. I tried and tried talking people out of voting for Bush. Bush got all the church goers votes and McCain is doing the same.
James, Louisville, Ky, USA
Bush's words are disingenuous, sentimental, self-serving, lacking in any true feeling or depth and reek of self pity and disrepect. A very fitting epitaph for his presidency.
Faisal, London,
Hello All,
after making a spreadsheet of oil cost with profit, cost of defense arms as a percent, cost of arms to steal the oil, we can easily see that a producing nation only has to spend all oil profit on arms to make it impossible for pirates, With no threat oil is $24 not $140 to consumers.
willi, lincoln, lics
So, "Mission" wasn't accomplished after all.
Neil, Gloucestershire, England
All of the Republicans crying about the 'haters and whiners' should remember to heed their own advice when Obama is President. I'm calling pre-emptive 'You can't judge Obamas actions for 40 years' on you guys. And you soon-to-be haters will sit there and hate the peace and prosperity.
Paul, San Jose, CA,
"I want to know why the American public aren't screaming from an investigation into the billions of dollars of their tax money which has been stolen by contractors and people tied to both the American/Iraqi governments."
Mike, London, UK
The answer: FEAR!
Garth Strong, Houston, USA
What happened to all those who said this war was over oil, did the $138 a barrel change your minds. You know, our very own citizens hated our Revolutionary war.. People in new york burned draft notices during our civil war, probably some of your ancestors. Time will prove this decision right.
Benoni, Philadelphia, USA
There is no doubt that Bush is desperately afraid that the world will stop playing his childish games the moment he leaves office.
Eftekhar Ali, Dubai, UAE
I just get so tired of the constant hate and unkindness toward President Bush. He is a President who suffered unlimited problems. He isn't God and could not have stopped 9/11 nor Katrina. I will not vote for John Macain and I am an active Republican in my state because of his remarks.
Evelyn, Acworth, USA
I want to know why the American public aren't screaming from an investigation into the billions of dollars of their tax money which has been stolen by contractors and people tied to both the American/Iraqi governments. Bush has been uncannily quiet about this matter, I wonder what he really knows.
Mike, London, UK
Has there been a major terrorist attack on America since 9/11. Is Osama bin Laden hiding under a rock in Pakistan afraid? We have a lot to be grateful to President Bush.
Jane, Singapore, Singapore
To those who maintain that Bush prevented a terrorist uprising, recall there were no WMD's. Bush lied and founded an illegal war, which INCREASED terrorist activity. Portraying a Western devil to disaffected youth became EASY after Bush. He was bin Laden's best recruitment officer.
Michael, London, UK
I can't believe there are people out there that still support GWB. The more fools you back his insane agenda, the closer you make the world inch towards New World Order, the highest form of totalitarism ever coinceived by man.
If they are allowed to do this, mankind will know a new age of darkness.
Francis, Parma, Italy
HE regrets his legacy. What about the tens of thousands of bereaved families in Iraq and the US?
Bill Peter, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Those who never served complaining about the war. Those who stand back and cry for the dead soldiers but never raise their voice for the 10s of thousands killed by drunk drivers every year. Odd that you complain about one President and yet say nothing about the congressional members who funded it.
Benoni, Philadelphia, USA
Bc has one good point, though. It is not right, when we have the military we do, to behave unilaterally. Of course, those of you outside the US must realize that in a global world, you too deserve criticism from overseas quarters. We're all stuck with each other, and thus have to listen to eachother
Sib, Friendswood, TX, United States
America really needs to take a GOOD LOOK AT ITSELF and ask why they are so unpopular throughout the world?
America has been sponsoring terrorism in different forms for years, Ireland, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, to name just a few. Isnt every every terrorist someone elses freedom fighter?
ECP, UK,
............and if he hadn't gone to war, what then?
William, Shepshed, England
It's even more frightening when it's intelligent people that are vocal in their support of Bush. How does the principle of cause & effect not play a role in the foreign policy decisions supported by EVERY single (let's not single out the Bush administration) US government for the last 3 decades?
Ghalib, San Diego, CA
The shock and awe was perpertrated on the American people on 9/11/01 by forces within the US Govt, which made it quite easy for Bush to build a flimsy case to invade Iraq. Everything that's happened since is excatly how they game theoried it over at DARPA. One day, we will weep at what we allowed.
T Paine, Boston, USA
Some gave harsh words for this "Man of renown"
Like the widows and cripples in Old Baghdad town
Who owe their conditions to the DU thrown around.
Too late for impeachment, there is not enough time.

Ann of Reno - I have a bridge in Kentucky I'd like to sell you. You can walk over it on your way to the Creationist Museum
Bob, Monroe,
I only have to say, Peace has a Militant side. How many of your people were in the buildings of 9/11? How many of your familys have grieved because of what terrorist have done?
Jerylyn, Mesa, USA
Judging by the comments from the US, I think the anti-Bush lobby outweighs pro-Bush 2:1. Shame the democratic system you export can only mobilise less than 50% of the US vote...hey looks like we'll probably see another war mongering, dictatorial tyrant elected in Iraq. Like Bush..er..Saddam even.
andy, UK,
Are we supposed to be happy that Bush has apologised for getting pretty much every part of his foreing policy wrong? Guantanamo bay, Ignoring UN policy (which Britain also did), insighting religious hatred (isnt that against the law in Britain?). Bush is a war criminal and he needs to be tried.
Max , Truro, United Kingdom
To the person who said noone outside America has the right to criticise Bush, because he is YOUR President. You are welcome to him as long as he does not go round throwing America's military might around.
Bc, London,
Bombing other countries, abduction, torturing, rendition in Europe without UK government knowledge, Guantanmo Bay...
No wonder he did not want to sign the ICC agreement - because then he would have to face the possibility of being indicted as a war criminal.
Bc, London,
The reason Bush presided over the only major 'attack' on US soil in recent history is because it was perpertrated by the administration themselves in order to try to discredit Islam.
Joe, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Why can Bush supporters still not see the truth? If Bush went to war to remove a horrible dictator, why isn't he in Zimbabwe now removing Mugabe.
If it was to secure the weapons of mass distruction, why did he not charge into North Korea when they set off their first H-bomb last year.
Oil!!!!
Mark Simpson-Daniel, England,
There are many in the World who say "Go home, Uncle Sam and tend to your own backyard". If America had been isolationist, avoiding military conflict in foreign countries, how would it all turn out? I think most of us would be begging the USA to help us stem the tide of fundamentalist Islamic terror.
Peter, Auckland, New Zealand
I am amazed by the perspective of people like Ann in REno, who maybe watches too much Fox News.
The fact is that not only has Bush presided over the only major foreign atttack on US soil in recent memory, then failed to catch Bin Laden. Plus there's Iraq and the effect of oil prices on security..
dave, London,
It's frightening to me that there are actually people left who still support Bush.
Dave, Los Angeles, USA
George Bush's primary sworn responsibility is the defense of the US. He has done this since 9/11. My thanks to him.
O admire this man enormously. I believe his actions will be vindicated. I believe he is a good, honorable and humble man concerned with the welfare of Americans and the world.
Ann , Reno, USA
It's amazing how many people seem to be completely oblivious that under the Bush administration US actually took major steps towards attempting to secure world peace. The next president actually has a chance to avoid a military showdown with Iran...
Nikita Bernstein, New York City, USA
haha I agree bush is just trying to make himself feel better, he should of thought that before he went on all vacations and little golf games. He should be the one in Iraq fighting instead of our loved ones.
Charles, Beaumont, USA
It's awfully nice for George Bush to regret in his twilight months. But he shouldn't insult those who've died fighting, only for him, his father and their cronies to profit. He should've spared us the Gulf War and Afghanistan, and all the lives that have been needlessly lost.
Philip, London, United Kingdom
Big Picture: 1) Bush and EU elites are trying to create a 1 world government via Bilderburgers, CFR, Trilateral Commission as evidenced by NAFTA, CAFTA, lack of border enforcement and rise of trans-national corporations. 2) America must be levelled by dollar collapse, outsourcing, and wasteful wars
Michael Gray, California, USA
Someday, a FISA request will reveal what really went on in Dick Cheney's 2001 Energy Policy Meetings, which for some reason have been classified until now. And on that day we'll find out whether Iraq was in this administration's plans LONG before 9/11.
bob, Omaha, ne
"Have we forgotten the 12 UN resolutions Saddam ignored..?"
Israel is in violation of 68 UN resolutions. Shall we invade?
"...daily shots at aircraft attempting to patrol the 'no fly' zones?"
Israel sank a US Ship in '67 on purpose, killing naval personnel shall we invade?
john omniadeo, San Francisco, USA
How does one man have an illegal war when it takes an act of congress for our country to go to war
Jason, Athens GA,
History will not judge a man kindly for opening a can of worms and losing control of it. President Bush has endeavored the lives of Americans on false pretenses and fabricated lies. It has put the world at greater jeopardy, I have seen it with my own two eyes serving in the Army in Iraq.
Mike, Irvine, USA
I too voten for him twice and am very glad I did. President Bush has led by his convictions and by acting on what was RIGHT as opposed to what was POPULAR (by the poles) He will ultimatey by remembered as a man who acted on principle rather than bluster and pose, and that makes all the difference.
Ben, Columbus, United States
I see this as little more than an attempt to make himself look like a good person before he steps down; to gain sympathy for himself and, by proxy, the republican party; and to sway people away from Obama and toward his close friend, McCain.
J. Shepherd, Reisterstown,
Does anyone else feel the universe imploding?
Pete, Chicago, US
I think George Bush is a great President. We were attacked in 2001 and he responded immediately, showing the world we will not tolerate terrorism. We have not been attacked since. His policies have kept us safe. McCain must be elected for us to stay safe. If Obama wins, we are dead. God help us.
DeMarco, Utica, USA
People get the president they disserved?
Is not about having is about being. Is about intelligent, wise and unselfish ways.
All the technologies and weapons will be useless if we can't produce food. Lets be best friends with our neighbors because we may need them very soon.
America, wake UP!
Raul Galeano, MIami, USA
Yeah, I regret his legacy, too.
Karen, Winter Park, Florida, USA
I felt actual, physical nausea on reading that Bush regrets that he is not looked at as a man of peace.
Worst president in U.S. history. Bar none. We will elect Barack Obama and offer an apology to the world.
Jan, Seattle, WA, USA
You can't place blame on just one man. GWB does not have total control over our government. There's a thing called Checks and Balances so if our Congress and Senate didn't want to go to war then they could've voted it and it would've never happened. Could any of you done a better job?
Rob, detroit, USA
Bush is a disgrace to the USA, and now he and the neo-cons are desperate to redefine his legacy while he's still in office. If trying to change history is the best the GOP can do on the topic of invading Iraq, then it's going to be very tough for them come November..
Alex, Arlington, VA, USA
To Eric:
You said: "you should be so lucky that you can still live and breath safely thanks to the fact that we are taking the fight to those who ATTACKED US!"
That is what I have been hearing from the right wing nuts. Answer me one question. What country attacked us?
Ren Car, San Francisco, USA
It is not a question whether Iraq was behind the 9/11 attacks. It is however, a question, whether or not you believe in Radical Islam's Intent to destroy Rep. & Democrats alike. No matter your political pursuasion, if your hatred of G.W blinds you to the greater issue, you are not worth debating.
Buddy, Houma, USA
Blah, blah, blah! President Bush was the only man willing to stand up to the Islamic Terrorists. I can not believe that there are people in the world who take a blind eye to all the terrors brought about from this evil, then get mad a GWB for standing up against it.
jsd, gallipolis, United States
"The man is a good man."
Yeah, sure he is. He would gladly stiff the American middle class worker and allow the whole nation to become an annex of Mexico. If that is a good man, I'll vote for a bad one.
Bobby, Long Beach, Aztlan
How the heck can he say that given the knowledge he Is building massive bases close to the iranian border. Is he doing a leapfrog and waiting for jeb to finish them off in 4 years?
This war was the old boy texas network on a procurement mission. Thats all!
John Kerr, Edinburgh, SCOTLAND
relationship with iran was ruined when the u.s. under eisenower overthrew mossadegh and installed the shah . the reaction to that was fundamentalism - khomenei - as it was to the destabilization of Afghanistan; and then the islamic world is called 'ante-deluvian' by the imperialists!
michael roloff, seattle , usa
President Bush. You have failed to serve the people. You serve only your dark lord, Cheney. We will be glad when you are gone.
Worst. President. Ever.
Patrick, California,
I also voted for him twice and I completely regret it now. No president has attacked Constitutional Rights more than Bush has. Had the Republicans kept the house and senate in 2004, we would all be living in a police state right now. Google "Patriot Act II" and see what horrors Bush wanted to enact.
Roger, Amarillo, United States
Dan, Bush is probably going to down in history as one of, if not THE worst United States President, for a mile long list of very good reasons. He might be a nice person, he's been a terrible president. History is already baffled as to how he was reelected. People like you, I guess.
Helen, NYC, USA
My input, this nation and the world are very lucky George W. Bush has been our leader for these past several years. The tired lies from lofty-loons do not ring true no matter how loud or often they are mindlessly repeated....
1) tax cuts for the rich - when top 10% pay 85% of all income taxes, kind
Randy, Orlando, USA
Dear Shayne from Memphis - I think you will find the UN resolutions in Article 51 clearly show what is an illegal and legal action on another country - 'Iraq round 2' did not fit the legal bill. I also think that Bush more accurately called a spade a 'WMD'.
Margot, Geneva,
George W. Bush will be remembered for uniting the world to oppose terrorism and liberating the oppressed people of Iraq. Bill Clinton's legacy is gutting the US military, investigation rather than action in response to terrorism, and a shameful adulterous interlude with a post-adolescent girl.
Harold, Phoenix, USA
I cannot wait until he is out of office. I pray McCain is not his replacement.
Michael McT, Philadelphia, USA
Dan,
Please tell me you are joking.
GW Bush has responsible for one of the worst foriegn policy disasters in this country, leading to a shambled economy (partly caused due to inflation) and more than a million Iraqis dead in a rather miscalculated war
And you are actually glad you voted for him??
Sathish, santa clara, ca, USA
Many are strongly criticizing Bush but who are those to criticize Bin Laden, the fanatic of Iran and the Muslims extremists who have killed so many people in Irak and elsewhere???
The laters are the true criminals but very few to criticize them. Don't you see a distorded perception?
Jacquelin Ouellette, Montreal , Canada
Dan in Yuma AZ is from a Republican state where they still believe in the tooth fairy when it comes to politics. While most Americans tend to be a forgiving people, this time, over 70% admit their contempt for the President who thinks "I'm sorry" is going to work.Impeachment is too good for him.
W. Sennit, MOSS BEACH, United States
The invasion of Iraq was a mistake, the bombingof Bagdad was based on erroneous information.Mr Bush is responsible for the outcome, thousands dead, thousands maimed,thous-ands homeless.Perhaps it was not erroneous information,per-haps it was a deliberate lie, the reason for the mayhem in Iraq was OIL.
Tom, Denver, U.S.A
It wasn't for oil. Bush could have done business with Saddam, it would have been cheaper. In Sen. Rockefeller's report last week intelligence information substantiated Iraq's ties to terrorists groups, safe haven for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and contacts with Al-Qaeda.
Chris, Washington, CT
There is no united front against Iran. The French government admitted as much recently and said that having some dialouge with them would be beneficial. Who knows how many other allies are doing the same thing? There have been no results to ostracizing them; it hasn't slowed their nuke program.
OH, chicago,
"I voted for him twice, and I'd gladly do it again."
Dan, Yuma, AZ, USA
Dan, Bush hasn't gotten around to violating that part of the Constitution yet, but relax, there's still time.
Mike, Pittsburgh,
"Notice this all happened after the Democrats took control of Congress" Please enlighten us. What legislation was passed (with Bush's signature mind you) that caused oil prices to rise and the housing market to crash? For any credit, please be specific.
Mark, Concord, USA
"[Iran] certainly invaded the United States when they attacked and seized our embassy." Wanna explain WHY they stormed our embassy in Iran? What could possibly have caused those students to hate the United States so much?
Mark, Concord, USA
"Yes he made mistakes but he ALWAYS believed his decisions were in the best interest of the USA" Lot of good that does us. Given his track record, you'd think a majority of this country would have seen he lacked good judgment. Oh, that's right, THEY DID.
Mark, Concord, USA
1. Why do Bush haters never discuss (or even know about) the 150 tons of yellowcake found April 03 by our troops at Tuwaitha, Iraq?
2. Days before the March 03 Iraq invasion, why did Joseph Wilson warn on ABC "Nightline" not to invade, because he knows Saddam HAS wmd? Who did the hyping Joe?
E Gumprecht, Winston Salem, USA
He does not say he regrets the thousands who died because of his lies and treachery. He does not apologize for wrecking the economy with spending on a futile war. He does not have second thoughts about having squandered our good will overseas. Instead he regrets that people see him for what he is.
Bill, San Jose, USA
Mr. Bush, thank you for conflating Iraq with 9/11 and invading a country that had NOTHING to do with Al Qaeda... Thank you for squandering the good will of the world with your lies and incompetence. Thank you for the $15 Billion a month for your Iraq lie. Mission Accomplished DUBYA!
thomas, tallahassee, USA
"there have been no terrorist attacks since 9/11" Is that right? Anthrax attacks. Train bombing in Spain. Nightclub bombings in Bali. Chechen's take over a theater in Moscow. Suicide bomber in Saudi Arabia. Truck bombs in Turkey. Bush's policies have NOT made us safer.
Mark, Concord, USA
It is a really sad day that American's lack respect for their leader. George W Bush has done impecably well DESPITE having to pacify the bleeding heart liberals.
Do all of you need to be reminded that Clinton is who started the mess that George W Bush was forced to clean up?
mandy, Alabama, USA
"Iran has not attaked any country in 300 years. "- As a state sponsor of terrorist agents to carry out the attacks for them, they don't need to "attack" anyone directly when they are already doing so by proxy. Iran's been offered everything and the kitchen sink, yet still marches on to nuclear arms
MikeF, Iowa,
Chris, pre-war Iraq was producing 3 million barrels a day (mbd). Today Iraq is producing 2 mbd. The world demand is 87 mbd & world production is 85 mbd. The war was about the CONTROL of the oil. The high cost of gas is like an interest payment on the billions the US borrowed from the central bank.
Steven , Kennesaw, GA
I think that George Bush has a nerve to question anyone's ability to be in the house after him- one of worst presidents in American history. His so called regret and newfound claims as a man of peace simply do not ring true, much too little too late. The world will be a safer place come January
Yolande M. Agble, Accra, Ghana West Africa
I guess he wished he didn't have to use the pentagon propaganda campaign to sell this war either...
David, Dallas TX, USA
America is fortunate for having had President Bush at the helm when terrorism struck the U.S.A? Excuse me? Had he actually acted on the intelligence in the daily briefings he got, we may not have been attacked at all. And then he used his blunder to get us into a war that was totally unrelated.
Mark, Concord, USA
Chris
Just because the Bush administration botched up the post-invasion management of Iraq, that doesn't mean that oil wasn't one of the prime considerations for the war. Otherwise, what would be the appeal to the largest beneficiaries of the war (halliburton etc)?
andre, San Francisco, usa
Sean from Seattle, is of course, incorrect in his statement that Iran has not attacked any country in 300 years. In fact, Iran has repeated attacked Israel and the US through its surrogates in both terrorist organization of Hezbollah and Hamas. We still owe Iran for 240 marines' lives.
Jack, New Orleans, Usa
I don't know why President Bush keeps thinking he's a man of peace. He's not. He's delusional, not to mention devious
Connie, Denver,
so Bush said
" aim now was to leave his successor a legacy of international diplomacy for tackling Iran. "
Sounds to me like he He favors Obama as next president..., after all McCain has publically renounced deplomacy with such regimes.
Damien Cunningham, Camden, USA
Mr president thank you for your service, and for keeping all of us safe. You chose to stand up to the greatest threat this country had to deal with, God bless you sir.
joe c, ny, usa
The Bush administration is still misleading the public. Mr Bush and his goverrnment have been conducting a religious war. If Afghanistan and Iraq were catholic nations, there would be no middle east conflict. America is frightened of the muslims because, they the muslims worship Allah, not the US$
Jim Wills, Brisbane, Australia
Pretext for war was not to stea the oil. It was to retard the flow and thus drive up the cost. That was the purpose of the original embargo. Check history and look to last century for when it was done first. Sadaam never worked with terrorists, for all his religion he was sunni-despised by Al queda
Mike, St Pete, USA
"As far as I can tell the US economy is on its knees, the housing markets are collapsing and gas now $4 per gallon. Is this really good?"
Notice this all happened after the Democrats took control of Congress
Richard, Alexandria, Virginia
I am proud of our President . He is a strong and great leader. I fear for this country-but only because of the media/leftist brainwashing that so many in America have succombed to. People forget real fast. I'm proud to be an American and I always will...PS-God bless the NATO troops...
Renee, Woodbury, USA
Mike in Waukegan: Your smarmy slap at Terry and Rebecca's intelligence is funny , considering your big point of the "Millenium Plot" and clearly you don't know what happened. Clinton's policies and staff had NOTHING to do with foiling it. It was single wary border agent. Clinton asked credit anyway
E Gumprecht, Winston Salem, USA
To Chris from Michigan: we didn't get the cheap oil, but that was the expectation for those who brought us to war. Many war supporters said the operation would stabilize oil prices and even pay for itself. Just because they were wrong doesn't mean that wasn't their goal.
Jonathan Field, Henderson, US
Don't buy the book!
Hedd Jones, Hereford, uk
Our military has found Iranian road side bombs and other materials in Iraq. They are funding terrorists and insurgents fighting us in Iraq. Get of your buzz phrase of "they havent attacked anyone in 300 years"
Tony, Grayson, GA, USA
With oil due to run out by 2035, with the economic growth of China and India, oil will be even more precious. War in the middle east is guaranteed. Expect a war with China and continual carnage throughout the 21st century.Bush like Clinton and now Obama is merely a frontman for the NWO.
dave, milton keynes, england
There are some things for which regrets and apologies are utterly meaningless.
Starting a war is one of those things.
Wade, Knoxville, TN, USA
chat chat and more chat the fact still remains that the usa only attacks defencless women and children like a coward. if they want a real war attack Iran. as far as i am concerned the us admin and army are buch of gutless wonders.
behrooz, bournemouth, uk
Iran hasn't invaded any country in how many years??? They certainly invaded the United States when they attacked and seized our embassy.
Tom, Chicago, USA
It looks like the Texan and his neo-conservative cowboys were also the directors of broke-back mountain and were fish mongers instead of war-mongeres after all!
Nisha Chopra, Uxbridge, Middlesex
Iraqi General Sada wrote a book on Iraq's WMD and how they were moved to Syria just before the war. Also, Saddam's own records confirmed their previous existence. Whatever else you say about GWB and/or the war, those who play the "he lied about WMD" card are the ones who are lying, not GWB.
Shawn, Seattle, USA
The only thing he regrets is that the whole thing has blown up in his face and people are tired of him and every single thing he stands for. He's attempting to have a legacy other than that of being the worst president in history.
Connie Hanks, Texas City, USA
Remember.
Iran does openly support Hizbullah in Lebanon, as well as other groups that come to Iraq and kill American and Allied soldiers and Iraqis.
Mike, Los Angeles,
Europe dominated the world from 1650 to 1941. The culmination was 6 million dead Jews, 20 million dead Russians, and Lord how many others? Euro whiners complain about Iraq war gone wrong. Well, they are right. The war is a mess. Just do not blame us for the rest of your legacy.
kermit, racine, usa
Regret? This guy worked steadily at this for eight years with no regret, basicaly with tunnel vision toward his goal in world pootics. Regret ,no I'm not buying it. However, the word failure does come to mind.
Warren Heintz, Lacombe,Louisiana, United States
Presidents are humans and cant always be right they need BELEIVE decision are right decision. Its easy to criticize. Bush he had the toughest presidency in recent history from the set go. Yes he made mistakes but he ALWAYS believed his decisions were in the best interest of the USA
sheya, London,
The Iran-Iraq War, Sean?
Holding hundreds of Americans hostage 30 years ago, Sean?
And all that talk about wiping Israel off the map, Sean?
Mike, Allentown, USA
President Bush, Please for once understand the price of Iraq is two million displaced, 400,000 dead, 600,000 casualties. You never seem to get by counting just the Americans: none displaced, 4,000 dead and 20,000 casualties.
You are not a global leader. You destroy our legacy.
Mendel Peterson, Sandy, Utah, USA
Wrong Sean. Iran has directly and indirectly attacked several countries over recent years. I agree that various factions of American conservatives have been demonized though ;)
Dan, Arlington, Texas
I didn't know Hurrican Katrina was Bush's fault...is it not enough for the weatherman to tell you that a Hurricane is coming so get out of here?
Ross, Portland, OR,
Iran is not Nazi Germany, despite all the demonization of the neo-cons and the war-mongering, hate-mongering, fear-mongering conservatives. Iran has not attaked any country in 300 years. To demonize Iran is only a strategy of bullying with hypocracy and double-standards. Iran offered to talk in 2003
Sean, Seattle, USA
Alice, if we are raiding the oil rich countries where is all the oil and cheap gas. Get real! Get a mind of your own and figure it out. That was a big pretext on 9/11. Wake up!
Chris , Traverse City Michigan, US
l'll have to side with Nicole from NY on this one!!!
kathy, east, usa
I voted for him twice, and I'd gladly do it again. The man is a good man, and I believe he has done a good job for our country and the world. I'm thankful for his steadfastness and courage in the midst of so much malignment from those with no faith and no courage. History will judge him kindly
Dan, Yuma, AZ, USA
Nicole, Why should terrorists take the trouble of bringing the US down when GWB is doing such a great job of it himself? And haven't you worked out yet that Bush's whole terrorism thing is just a pretext to go and raid other people's oil-rich countries?
Alice, London, UK
Anyone who had really studied the religious, political, and historical background of Iraq would have realized that Saddam Hussein was not behind the 9-11 attacks. Read the new report from our own government about the misinformation and falsehoods that were used to start a war.
e watson, Fort Worth, USA
The time to regret things is before you do them. Not after.
A minimum of foresight and common sense are both tragically lacking in Bush's person. They are fundamental in order to exercise power wisely.
I can only hope that many a sleepless night reminds him of his avarice and ineptitude.
Kristina , Madrid,
Not one person walks this planet without regrets. I admire him for his openness, his courage, his leadership and his Faith. Far from being a disaster he has been the best President in line with Ronald Reagan. Those of you who don't live in our country would not know. As an American I stand proud
lori, phoenix, United States of American
There are very unserious and immature "opinions" rooted in gotchya games over word-play. Everyone knows now after the fact that Saddam intentionally led every intelligence agency on the planet to believe he was hiding weapons. Sideline-haters insist we connect dots, yet do nothing when connected.
van, crown point, usa
USA is a Republic, not a Democracy
Joe, Atlanta, USA
Tax relief for the richest, burden of largest fiscal deficit ever in US history, lack of insight and planning into the iraq war costing more american lives....while the your president takes yet another holiday. Its astonishing anyone is not embarrassed to come here and support GWB.
tim, london,
To all who say the war wasn't illegal: The war was passed in Congress, but it was illegal because it was not given authorization by the UN Security Council. The problem is that the US signed on to this charter and agreed that any war fought by a UN country must be sanctioned by the UN.
Chris, Derry, NH
At least he's sullied the Bush political legacy to the degree that we won't get any more of them in office.
Ian, New York, U.S.
Michael,
Can you please name these attacks on US soil that outnumber Clinton's era? Clinton's lack of attention to attaks like the USS Cole and Saudi embassy led to 9/11. There has not been an attack on US soil since. Bush is compensating for 8 years unchecked terrorist behavior.
Nicole, New York, US
everyone knew on 9/ 10 /01 that terrorists were "plotting our demise", and we knew that if anyone was going to try it would be Saddam Hussien. Regardless of where the terrorists who did 9/11 were from, Hussein was involved in harboring terrorists, funding them, and ENCOURAGING them to kill Us.
Steve, Sand Springs, US
Have we forgotten the 12 UN resolutions Saddam ignored or the near daily shots at aircraft attempting to patrol the 'no fly' zones?
Bush's legacy shall be the cowboy that drew the line in the sand & told the world to pick a side in this war on terror - no neutral allowed. History will be kind.
D Cox, tyler, usa
The right wingers that thank GW are so insanely out of touch it is laughable. The man had an incompetent cast from the beginning and the writing is all over country. Do we forget Katrina or how he overlooked Afghanistan, or how Osama not being caught? Americans need a wake up call.
Michael, Crawford, TX, USA
Unilateralism was not the policy of Bush's first term. In fact, he tried to form alliances in Europe, but the European leaders, on the take from Saddam, refused to follow. If you want to see a dramatization of his problem, watch the famous Gary Cooper western film, High Noon.
Mark Strobach, Seattle, USA
Dear Steve from Houston. Last time I looked the USA and the UK were democracies. That gives me the right to criticise those who have been elected to lead us. Or perhaps you would prefer to live in Zimbabwe?
K Thompson, Reading, UK
Wow, "misunderstood?" Who's he kidding - he lied, and he continues to lie. He sounds like Clinton now - "mis-spoke". He is a criminal, and his legacy and memoirs should be written from an international prison after convicted of war crimes.
Oliver, LA, USA
George Bush Jnr has been a disaster for America. He edged the Presidency by default and was an isolationalist week on foreign policy. 9/11 though tragic, suddenly and understandably brought massive backing. What gets me is the folk who can't digest the events since and how badly he's hurst the US
Craig, Glasgow, Scotland
For Bush to admit this now is a double tragedy for all Iraqi's, now dead, and the dead young men sent to do the job. Bush was 'gung ho' from the start and his country is in tatters. As one poster has pointed out Bin Laden got this result for peanuts.
How does this make Blair look now!!
Shirley Bowen, Blackpool, UK
I've yet to see proof that the Iraq war was illegal. Saying it over and over does not make it so.
And it was long overdue for a US leader with a backbone to step up and call a spade a spade.
Shayne Smith, Memphis, USA
What a joke. He doesn't want to be a warmonger so much he's about to unilaterally bomb Iran for no reason other than the usual obfuscated oil-grab.
Perhaps if he didn't want to be thought of as a warmonger, he shouldn't have lied to the public and started the US on an illegal war.
For shame!
Voland, Caen, France
"biggest blunder history has ever recorded" (of Iraq war) ?????
Look at "appeasement of Hitler
RD, Sandy, USA
I can't believe that there are still people who back GWB. He is responsible for an illegal and unnecessary war that has cost
100 billion $ and thousands and thousands of innocent lives.
He is a war criminal, no less, and if there is any justice he should prosecuted.
Marc Stevens, Antwerp, Belgium
It's too bad the ignorant religious masses handed leadership of the most powerful country in the world over to a man who was not wise enough to realize rhetoric like "bring 'em on" and "dead or alive" and "axis of evil" were not in the best interests of peace. Twice. What a mess...
Patrick van Slee, chicago, usa
I would like to see any of you people try to lead The United States of America. It would be in shambles in a week. Quit criticizing him when it is not your place.
Steven, Houston,TX, USA
President Bush is great. The only western President who had the courage to fight against islam defending western civilization. Yes this is the point, the only possible point. Reread islam's history in the past 1.300 years. We know very well who is George Bush. God bless him.
giorgio, monza, italy
President Bush deserves our gratitude and respect for taking unpopular positions that were necessary to effectively deal with the attack on our country and to keep us safe by fighting the war on their lands. Reagan was despised by the left while in office too, and his legacy is strong.
Mark, Atlanta,
As much as I still love and adore his father - I hate George W! I have never been so disgusted and disappointed in anyone as I've been in him. And I miss his wonderful father everyday! Go Obama 08
kathy, chicago, usa
Possibly Bush's legacy could be the man who lost $23 billion of taxpayers money in the desert, and funnelled in excess of $1 trillion to selected republican-donating defence contractors, in exclusive no bid contracts?
And of course, all of this was achieved with money borrowed from China.
Owen, London, UK
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Bush took the superhighway, in an SUV, at eighty miles per hour, while talking on a cell phone.
Jean, New Orleans, USA
Jayil, London -
If you genuinely believe Russia and China will lead the world "for the better", you're going to be sadly disappointed.
Their treatment of their own citizens is all you need to know.
What do you seriously expect from them?
alex, bristol,
It is shocking that President Bush apologizes for his language, but not for the killing of thousands of innocent lives in an unnecessary war.
John Van Velt, Cleveland, USA
President Bush is a man of courage: he was willing to stand up to popular-but-misguided opinion and stay the right course. I amnot an American citizen but I appreciate his stance on fighting Jihadi terror. Sad it is that so few other leaders have the same moral fiber.
John Martin, Zürich, Switzerland
I still have not connected the dots on how our American occupation in Iraq has made us safer and that it is in our interest. On 9/11 the hijackers were from Saudi Arabia not Iraq. So is OBL from Saudi Arabia. So, why should I beat my next door neighbor because of the guy across the street.
jaye, Birmingham, USA
Bush and his cronies decided the US would not sign on to the International criminal Court because 'we don't want any of our forces' in the dock on war crimes charges.
It could be because he didn't want to be in the dock with "Halliburton" Cheney, Rumsfeld and the others at the top.
Dennis, Portland OR, US
To all you liberal (and now safer) whiners out there, you should be so lucky that you can still live and breath safely thanks to the fact that we are taking the fight to those who ATTACKED US! NO ONE likes war, but it is inevitable in todays society. George Bush has nothing to apologize for.
Eric B, Lexington, MA, USA
You know, I regetted many times after the horses were gone that I let open the barn door. By the way, notice how the he still doesn't admit any mistakes - the issue is how others misinterpreted hiis innocent comments.
bill, Alameda, USA
The first four years of Bush & Blair was great but what happened during the second term of office for both the leaders is questionable. Bushand Blair are the cause of all the peoblems in this world at the moment and no matter how sorry they are for their actions it will not undo what has been done.
Mahmud Ashanollah, croydon, England
to all
it's getting cliche' to jump on the anti-Bush and anti-American bandwagon. History will prove that the change begun in the middle east is a product of this military effort. All who gripe will be the first to ask for our assistance in an emergency and you all routinely have.....
John, detroit, United States
Soon public funds will go to build a library for him although I don't know if he's ever been in one. In reality this President should be held accountable for what he has done to this country. The Illegal war and the corporate coziness that will be his true legacy.
LD, Los Angeles,
Ed, Hart, USA
You need to be less xenophobic of genuine and worthwhile criticism.
By the way, Internet, was British, so was the first true Electronic Computer.
TCP/IP was a U.S military concept, but not the internet.
If you wish your post to be taken seriously get your facts straight.
Joe, Geelong, VIC Australia
For me, he was the terrorist in chief. Collateral damage was nothing to him. Righteousness was all. Remember that suburb (occupied by several impeccably class families, early in the war, where Saddam was rumored to be lurking)? His command: bomb away - and he regrets the rhetoric?!
audax, Hong Kong, Hong Kong
Bo, Tulsa : "They did too and they are still supporting Iran as they develope their atomic missle programs."
There is NO evidence that Iran is developing any "atomic missle programs". Why are you making things up ?
DannyBoy, London,
"Ronald Reagan liberated over 100 million people in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. "
Yes - but he did it bloodlessly - proving it you can do it without going to war.
DannyBoy, London,
Pathetic old hippies! You all want a beautiful and peaceful world, but who you gonna call when it all goes wrong?
Bush had some hard choices and faced up to them. Mistakes? - quite a few, but the biggest one was not backing up GW at the outset.
Dan , London, UK
I'd like to apologize to the rest of the world for Bush on behalf of sensible Americans. As you can see from the comments above, there are still many here who actually believe that Iraq had something to do with 9/11.The Bush administration had a very effective propaganda machine.
Christopher Moore, San Francisco, USA
Ryan, do you even watch the news? The majority of the terrorists were Saudis who trained in Afghanistan. Iraq was a distraction in order to manipulate oil markets, funnel money to corporations and develop permanent bases.
Rosie Rodriguez, clovis, USA
I would like someone to calculate the amount of gas Bush is using in Air Force One during this trip - might there be a better use?
Judith, norfolk, virginia, usa
"Bush over-stepped his executive powers by taking USA into an illegal war."
Congress by super-majorities authorized the war. The October 2002 "Authorization for the Use of Force against Iraq" passed the House 296-133 and Senate 77-23, satisfying the War Powers Act.
A. Hamilton, Washington, D.C., USA
Bush must be the first American president to attack a second country sans provocation. In all the other wars (second world war, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan ect), Americans retaliated after being hit first, or in defence of an ally. What was the US defending when they went to take out Saddam?
Benjamin Ouma, Nairobi, Kenya
Wrong stephen sabo, wrong.
There is no democratic government in Iraq, the Americans decide everything, nor in Afghanistan. Worldwide, terrorism is up, Al Queada still strong, attacks on US soil are worse than in Clinton's era. NK restarting it's nuke ambitions. Bush has failed on everything.
Michael, Sydney, Australia
we should leave the world with itself and it's Ostrich approach to a wolf in wolf's clothing. I have seen in the ashes of destroyed civilizations the grin of tyranny, and the dead limp hand of the willing still holding the match.
Joe V, Monterey, CA, USA
Six years after he started a war of choice that's thus far killed 4094 American soldiers, 176 UK soldiers, over a hundred more from other coalition allies, in addition to TENS to HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of Iraqis caught in the crossfire, Bush says he's got regrets. Well, that's OK then--right?
Michael Sheridan, Sacramento, California, USA
Please don't judge us by the glowing remarks made here about Bush. Remember that he only has a 25% approval rating. Apparently, that entire 25% has decided to comment on this article.
<br/>Speaking for the other 75%, let me just say that President Obama's tenure cannot start too soon!
Keith, Brooklyn, USA
History will remember mr Bush (and his America) as being defeated by one single man- mr Bin laden; the man who financially bled American to death. He did exactly what he said before tricking Bush in to endless wars. Russia and China are waiting their turn to lead the world, for the better.
jayil, london, uk
What a civilised world we live in.President Saddam hangs for killing 142 people who plotted his assasination. Bush responsible for the death of 1/2 million innocent Iraqis leaves his job free to die in his own bed with a few regrets and wonders why the rest of the world do not respect America/him.
LAKSHMAN PARDHANANI, GOA, India
those who critisize Bush Juinoir for going into Bahgdad are the very same people who critisized Bush Senoir for not going into Baghdad in 1991. These are the same hypocrites who
would be nominating Clinton for the Nobel Peace Prize
had B.C. caught Hussein and replaced him with Dem elected Govt
Joseph Caulfield, offaly, Ireland
We have a president who says "you know" in the middle of a sentence. But then, so does my teenage daughter.
Chuck, Seattle, US
Bush has come a long way. In 2004, when John Kerry challenged him to name 3 mistakes he'd made during his first term, he couldn't mention a single one. Today, he's acknowledging that he "could have used a different tone". On the one hand, it's better late than never, but on the other....
Ben Green, San Francisco, USA
"he expressed regret at the bitter divisions over the war ... and was troubled about how his country had been misunderstood"....
If only he expressed as much regret for the 4000+ dead American solidiers and 30,000 + injured. He has a reputation as a war-monger because he is one.
Susan, Houston, TX, USA
He's not misunderstood. He's a warmonger who launched a bloody failure of a war that killed thousands. Not for the country but for his own ego. No one will ever forget. He'll go down in history as the most ignorant president ever. A first class buffoon.
Theo, Pasadena, USA
President Bush should have no regrets about what he said. At the time America needed to hear that from a strong leader. Everyone in the Congress cheered. America is fortunate for having had President Bush at the helm when terroism struck the U.S.A. Thanks for being there Mr. President.
Will Uebe, Washington, USA
Hindsight is always 20/20. It's a shame that his short-sightedness regarding Iraq has now culminated into what I believe is one of histories biggest blunders ever recorded. I only hope that our next President has the capability of bringing our country back on some semblance of solid ground.
Julie, Seneca, SC, USA
The fact he thinks Iran needs to be "tackled" shows what a naked mouthpiece for Israel he is. Tackling the democratic republic in '53 with Operation Ajax led to the radicalization of the Muslims there. Good job with that short-term thinking. Catch "Osama" yet or did he ever even exist?
Alex, Austin, USA
To answer the question posted from Esther in London, there is basically a media blackout of sorts here in the U.S.
Brad, Colorado, USA
The greatest gift Beorge Bush can give the next president is to do as little as possible between now and January.
g waterman, Topanga, CA, US
I seem to remember after 9/11 the same people saying "George Bush rushed to war." asking "when are we going to do something about the attacks, what is taking so long." We can't abandon the Iraqi people now. We all know
John McCain is the right choice and is the polar opposite of George Bush.
David Sullivan, Loudonville NY, USA
PRESIDENT BUSH KEPT THE COUNTRY SAFE!
..and I think he deserves and "A" in that department. His was a difficult Presidency--in comparison the "good times" of the Clinton terms of the 90s. Bush made the tough decisions: Clinton, his wife, Kerry, Pelosi ALL stated and believed Saddam had WMD in 2002!
COLGERO, Drexel Hill, USA
The Iraq war is Bush's war. George W. Bush is a corrupt Texan who has become the US president through unlawful means. No matter how hard he tries to revise history and his tenure as president, he will forever be known as a warmongering fool, and the worst president in US history.
Thomas , Tampa, US
Leonard Riddick, are you kidding me? You are comparing us having to go to war with natural disasters? I don't know how anyone could say this is a pre-emtive strike? THEY FLEW PLANES INTO BUILDINGS! Maybe not Saddam, but people just like him and people that he was protecting.
Adam Z, Jacksonville, USA
The problem you pro-Bush Americans have, is that in many parts of the world, the culture and therefore opinions, how things are done, etc. are very different to the US. Your arrogant gun-slinging John Wayne, My-Way-Or-The-Highway style, does come across as merely childish. And selfish.
pat, bangkok, thailand
remember johnny cooper, respect is earned through actions, not words-and this president's actions have spoken clearly...the aisle has more than two sides BTW.

A compulsory scholarship for the less informed in the Midwest and deep South, to venture around the world is called for here.
All lies and thievery aside, is the world any safer ? how many more people hate the US with vengeance than before including those who were friends ?
It is not the intention
Dan, Antwerp, Belgium
When you say "They made it clead, Death to America", who is they? It certainly wasn't Iraq, it was Bin Laden, who is either in Pakistan or Afgahnistan. The forgotten war..
susan, New Mexico,
"The timing of the WTC attacks were off by a couple of hours. if they had hit it a few hours later it would have been 50,000 dead." -- mar,c America
That's why it was an inside job. What you're saying is that "terrorists" did not want maximum casualties and only want kill foreign cleaners?- wrong
jayil, london, uk
The simple fact is that Bush did not - he's sorry now because History will prove that he is a War Monger and always will be - it will also prove that he is currently trying to re-write history to show his failed efforts are and continue to be harmful to America and others in the world.
Ray, killarney,
Many of you liberal carpers may soon think of the Bush Administration as "the good old days." Be careful what you wish for, especially when you are wishing for a Marxist. You Bush haters are going to get your chance to drive the car into the ditch in just a few more months.
Kenny, Reno, USA
Actually, the world can pick their own battles to fight if they really wanted to. There's China, N. Korea, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan, etc. PICK ONE AND SOLVE THE PROBLEM THERE! Why must everyone huddle around America's war, and then whine and moan about how terrible it's going? USA rules!
Joe Gaits, Morganville, Alabama
I think that after 6 months with President Obama....many, many people around the world are going to think...(not admit) that maybe Bush was not so bad afterall. He gets no credit for the incredible aid to Africa to fight AIDS......his free trade policy and support of South America.....etc. etc.
Kathy, Washington, DC, US
Thank God for Leaders such as Bush and Blair,(Think Churchhill/Roosevelt) 4000+ brave soldiers who have died have-given Iraq and Afgan. a chance at democracy, shame we have had to fight a politically correct war, to appease cowardly Euro/Amercan Libs-slaves of Lib media-ALQ kills infadels idiots
Joseph, Phoenix, USA
O how soon we forget. ~3000 viciously slaughtered moms, dads, brothers, sisters, daughters and sons on Sept 11th, 2001 and WE have to make atonations? No need to apologize for the War Against Terror, Mr. President. Thanks for standing up for your beliefs, sir!
Bill, Okinawa, Japan
To Rusty, Savannah, U.S.A.
"By law the President HAS to defend this country against all enemies foreign and domestic."
Yes - but only within defined limits. Heard of the War Powers Act, passed by Congress in 1973? Bush over-stepped his executive powers by taking USA into an illegal war.
HH, London,
Tell that to Americans 'regret loss of lives' or 'putting youngsters in harms way' TWICE REPEATED as this article repeated itself. G.W. Bush comes in loud and clear. His jumbled words led to jumbled statements and actions creating a divorce of America and Americans from the rest of the world.
Christine, Brooksville, USA
bush will stay in my memory as an absolute idiot and a puppet of big multi national companies.his decision to invade iraq was for oil oil and oil and not iraqis freedom.
anyone heard anything about wmd in iraq?anyone found anything yet?totally forgotten.oh maybe still looking.
ebbi britt, valencia, spain
If "united we stand, divided we fall" is more than a mere slogan, then whatever your stand on Bush (mine is that he has fatally ruined America) then the intensity and the total division of comments on this thread indicate that we are finished as a great nation. Thank you George Bush.

"George W. Bush liberated over 50 million people in Iraq and Afghanistan."
And created 1.3 billion enemies. (the whole muslim world)
jayil, london, uk
Well- it seems people forget Saddam was waving checks for $ 50K to palestinian ladies whose male relatives used suicide vests to attack shopping centers, it seems people forget Saddam told his military officers to distribute the thousands of gas masks he had bought ,before the invasion. He Bluffed !
Sam Williams, Rochester,NY, USA
This man regrets nothing. Like his father, who imposed the embargo on Irakian oil, baby Bush was always commited to deer oil and that is what he delivered to the oil men, both his own texans and his friends the saaudis.
Rui, Lisbon, Portugal
Iraq has turned a corner toward stability and will become an example for modernity in the middle east. While all you folks are kvetching about apologies from Bush, how about admitting that YOU were wrong about "losing" the Iraq war?
Freedom matters. Or is it only meant for people in the West?
Dave Schrumm, Cheshire, USA
M. Allen, Downey, CA, USA
Sure there have been no attacks in America since 9/11.... but Your president's warmongering caused many deaths on the tube here in London. many people have died. oh I forgot, they are not "American" lives and as a gun-toting American everyoine else's life does not matter.
Garry W, London,
The most profound compliment for President Bush is that he is despised by the Europeans. Well done!! This means he is doing something right. Islam only respects strength, weakness is despised. Europe will soon learn this to it's great despair.
John , Geelong, Australia
"Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves" so it was said at the turn of the 19th Century.
'Tis also said, "Those who don't learn from history, are condemned to repeat it."
Enough said!
Pat, Boise, ID, USA
And what exactly is your point Patricia?
Dr I Khan, aberdeen, UK
Ha ha ha what is this a Republican convention?? Bush will be remembered as the worst president in recent US history whehter you admit/accept it/like it or not.
His WMD debacle, the continuing Guantanamo Bay disgrace ruined not just his legacy but Tony Blair's as well. He talks of rhetoric?!
Ola, Bristol, England
I am an englishman who will emmigrate to the US! I like Bush and am grateful for what he did for the white, christian. If you want to see what liberal socialists have done to a country please come to britain its a hell hole now!!
mike, middlesbrough, england
I'm always surprised at how easy some people can fall for the politically motivated destruction of character that goes on. I didn't want to judge Clinton too harshly when he had his affair, but this president has never done anything to deserve the sort of rotten hatred he has received.
Jeff, Salt Lake City, USA
Thanks to god for giving us this men at this time in history. History will judge him, he protected this great nation, as someone who lived thru 911 and still lives thru it, thank you Mr president for your leadership and for keeping us all safe.
al, queens, usa
I'd rather have a president like Bush, who could make mistakes but does not have double standard on important issues, to a president with double standard. He does not seem to be a classic politician, who tells each group what each group wants to hear, just for the sake of ratings.
Dionisio, Athens, Greece
I to believe that President Bush has done pretty good job in his two terms.
He has been man enough not to let polls change him and man enough to say he wishes he had done somethings differently.
He has not spoken to the democrates with the same vitriol that they have gave him. God Bless GWB.
Pete, Kansas City, USA
You're more than welcome in Canada!
As Canadian who has several friends who work as peacekeepers, I must say, we're getting a little tired of running around after America, building the school ans hospitals they just finished bombing.
Heather , Winnipeg, Canada
President Bush's decisions have made the world a safer place today and in the next century- As a super power we have a global responsibility- Bush will be remembered for having a monumental place in history on a global scale helping secure peace in the world.
John, OBC, USA
This comments are so polarized - especially the right wing -they cannot see their follies. The US deals with communists and terrorist when it suits them. Saddam was a necessary evil. Thanks to Bush's mistakes in Iraq , the world will be uanable to react to the real threats like Iran.
Jim Peters, Petersburg, VA, USA
"Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves" so it was said at the turn of the 19th Century.
'Tis also said, "Those who don't learn from history, are condemned to repeat it."
Enough said!
Pat, Boise, ID, USA
Wow, I feel for Kentucky and Tennessee given Terry and Rebecca's total lack of knowledge. Having not been attacked since 9/11 is not a feather in his cap--he should have prevented 9/11 by paying attention! That Clinton prevented the milleniel attacks in Seattle and Los Angeles gets little credit--
Mike, Waukegan, USA
Iraq and the world was better with Saddam Hussien - no question about. Saddam was a true compassionate leader -. it was wrong for the Iraq "government" to execute him. He won election after election with nearly 100% of the vote. The Europeans marched in mass to support him. Miss you Saddam. Not
Ray Young, Fort Wayne, In, USA
I, as an American salute President Bush for having the nads to do something that Clinton did not do, go after and defeat the terrorist Saddam Hussein.
By law the President HAS to defend this country against all enemies foreign and domestic. Our intelligence said he had W.M.D.'s and we found them.
Rusty, Savannah, U.S.A.
In 1953 the CIA, at the behest of the UK's Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (now BP), overthrew the democratic government of Iran under Mossadegh. This, and Israel's theft of Palestine, laid the groundwork for what is now termed Islamic terrorism. Bush is simply same stuff different day.
John Claro, Cleggan, Eire
I believe that Pres. Bush inherited a reputation among terrorist groups that the U.S. did not have the courage to retaliate against terrorist attacks against U.S. military targets around the world which gave them courage to attack us at home. This is Jimmy Carter's war which began in Iran in the 70'
Ron, Montgomery Twp., USA
Going down in history as the worst president, must really grate on one in the dark of night, as he tosses and turns.
J.D. Miller, Sherman, Texas, USA
President Bush made the mistake of taking in the big picture without considering the political consequences..
Charles, Euless, U.S.A.
Once a dope always a dope!! I can't wait for all the other regrets he will start pulling out as he reflects on his disastrous eight years as president. He and his administration have definitely been the worst ever in the nations history.
Bring on Obama...Please!
Gary Miller, Altoona, USA
President Bush to be a man of honor, integrity and compassion. History will bear this out. I'm proud he is our President. It's unfortuante that the liberal camp, including the meda, has let their bitterness and hatred blind them to this man's greatness. God Bless America. God Bless President Bush.
Dale Schroth, Hiawatha, Iowa, USA
All those right-wingers still out of touch with reality, look at the increasing displeasure among the ranks of the Republican party...Look at the number of people Barrack can mobilize versus McCain. I do not think that Barrack is the man for the job, but he will be the next President!
Jim Peters, Petersburg, VA, USA
After reading all the comments on this article, I ask: What if Al Gore had been elected rather than President Bush? Al Gore gets all kinds of attention for his supposed stance on energy. Ask him why his compound in TN requires more energy than the governors quarters.
Frank J. Reitz, Fort Mill, SC, USA
Bush is the Man! He doesn't change his ways when opinion polls come out or when times are tough like Obama! Why after 20 years is he now disavowing his church? Obama will fold like a cheap suit when it comes to Iran. Hey Leornard your comparison makes no sense.
Jack, Atlanta, USA
President Bush is the second best President in my lifetime. Reagan was the best. When you complainers and generally unhappy people want to talk about failure, look to the socialists in Europe and the Democrats in the US Congress. The Government's job is to keep us safe not change our diapers.
John, Annapolis, USA
The only question remaining of his legacy is: Bad President or Worst President? He regrets his "rhetoric?" C'mon, how about regretting that he 1) mislead us into a wrong war 2) diverted our military from the real war in Afghanistan 3) Turned the world against us 4) Lost our moral superiority?
Greg Winter, Port Washington, USA
I hope Bush lives with the rest of his life with guilt and remorse of the blood of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and 50,000 U.S. casualties (dead and wounded) on his hands.
Bush wasn't elected. He was selected.
And he is the worst president the U.S. has ever had.
Full stop.
stephanie, Montpelier, VT
The war in Afghanistan was the right course. Taliban, Al Queda, Osama Bin Laden were there. We should have increased military presence in Afghanistan and stayed out of Iraq.
Scott, New York, US
Yes, I see that GWB regrets being "viewed" as a War Monger. Apparently he does not regret being a war monger, only being viewed as one.
TomH, Chandler, Arizona, USA
michael, sicklerville, USA
Bin Laden had been buying nukes since '93. ok, and Bush became President in 2000. Then made Bin Laden public enemy #1. Was the President supposed to go back in time and do what clinton would not?
but i do agree with the illegals part. that is his biggest failure
daniel, houston, USA
Put Bush's "regret" right along side his giving up golf "for the troops". It means nothing. What does mean something is that he has created half-a-million orphaned boys in Iraq who will need to avenge the loss of their fathers during the course of their lifetimes... We're talking serious blowback.
Thomas Higgit, Reno, NV
Iraq had no WMD's, Al Queda wasn't there until after we invaded. Now there are over 4,000 killed US soldiers, 30,000 wounded US soldiers and between 80,000 to 100,000 killed Iraq civilians. The cost of the Iraq war has been catastrophic.
Scott, New York, US
Bush has had the worst press of any President. Everyone talks about how horrible his failure was at this or that, but no one says how it could have been done better - even with hind-sight. If Bush hadn't gone into Iraq after Congress approved it, they would have painted him a weakling for it.
Rick, Indianapolis, US
The overwhelming majority of posts are from the USA. Why are so many americans reading and commenting in a British based publication to ascertain the thoughts of their President?
Esther, London,
This man is the most dishonest, cowardly and stupid president this country has ever had and it will take a long time for the US to get over the catastrophe of his presidency, much less the trillions of dollars debt. Only the naivety of the America electorate gave him a second term.
tony freeman, tampa, usa
George Bush is the worst president in American history, and the damage he has done at home is almost as great as the damage he has done abroad. He is not misunderstood. If anything, the arrogance, incompetence and authoritarian tendencies of his administration are drastically under-reported.
Scott Davis, Dallas, USA
Bush's legacy will haunt him long after he his gone...and far worse will be the damaging effects of his policies on our children and grandchildren. The US dollar has been devalued by debt to the degree that the world now trade in oil rather than dollars. Our kids will pay his unpaid bills..
Brian Weiner, Sarasota, United States
Bush and America look very different from what the President believes is a misunderstanding. US has made Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the entire Middle East much more unstable. That has been Bush's objective; to keep that part of the world constantly close to boil to allow manipulation.
MA Arshad, London, UK
President Bush will be remembered as a good President. Not perfect, who is?
Sine 9/11 we have not been attacked on our own soil and that is saying a lot. He is a decent man and history will look back on him kindly. God Bless Mr. President.
Taenha, CA USA
Taenha, Santa Clarita, USA
Cant believe the pro W comments here - not surprisingly they are almost all by Americans. Listen up - this man has changed so much in the world in the worst possible way in so little time. He's even managed to divide his own nation and a nation divided is weak and confused. Hollow words Mr Bush!
Jimmy, London, UK
Sam, jackson - what planet are you on? 'Spoon feeding OUR money' - in return for sending your cash to other countries the USA receives much needed resources that it cannot generate itself. Arguably it is Chinese corporations and middle east wealth funds which prop up your economy.
Arthur, London,
Repeal the 22nd Amendment! Four more years!
And oh by the way, I fought in Iraq for two years as an Army officer, so I think I have some sway in this regard.
Phillip, Dallas, Texas, USA
Not a guy anxious for war... then goes on about 'tackling Iran'.
Hilarious.
Howard, Manchester,
George W. Bush is a good man, a good father, husband, friend, pilot, and above all, a great president. For you Warhol, Baldwin. Pelosi.s, Rockefeller's and Kennedy's.....You are the ones whose names will be wiped clean like dust in the wind.....enjoy your 15 moments. You have sold out your country
rmiers, dallas, usa
Bush says, he found it very painful to put youngsters in harms way. He added: I try to meet with as many of the families as I can. And I have an obligation to comfort and console as best as I possibly can.
The fact is that the families get a condolence letter with his signature, Xeroxed.
Ion Marqvardsen, Farum, Denmark
With so many comments favouring Bush I find it truly impressive to see how well the Republican Party can drum up scribes.
Having said that I think a McCain presidency is in the bag. This isa nation of red-necks who thrive on unsubstantiated clap trap. The US is too immature to be world leaders.
A B Robertson, Dunoon, Scotland
As a matter of fact, the Indian Prime Minister referred to President Bush as "...one of the greatest American presidents who ever lived, for he alone understood the true threat of Islamic Extremism...".
And I agree.
Jason, Redding, USA
I am amazed at how many of the comments have come from the US. The Times should pat itself on the back that it has star power in the international media market.
emily, copenhagen, Denmark
President Bush is a moraled and principled man; not a weak-knee'd, media driven politician. We voted him into office because of his strength to lead and he did. Although I don't agree with everything he did, I am thankful he took the terroist fight to the terrorists instead of fighting them here.
Jasmine, Fort Worth, Texas
Can you just imagine the shape this country would be in ihad Al Gore or John Kerry had been president at the time of 9/11? Bush reacted in such a manner that the jihadists know we won't just lob a few missiles into some tents then sit on our hands. Mick Brown, Bogue,NC, USA
Mick Brown, Bogue, USA
President Bush took on many issues that were necessary in this brave new world with brave new wars with rogue states and rogue element gangs within them bent on societal suicide. The execution of such policies were let down by his appointments entrusted to see them through!
agmines, Pittsburgh, USA
it must be hard to wage war and personally live with the consequences. I believe GB is deeply affected by the strife he symbolizes, yet the party that he symbolizes upholds fundamental differences with most Americans with respect to foreign policy. Tax cuts and spin cannot measure a candidate.
gregory schiffhauer, nyc, ny
It is real funny that all these folks from foreign countries can sit over there in your little bubble, and act like President Bush and America were wrong from invading Iraq and Afganistan. You guys just stay in your unreal, unappreciative bubble, while the good ole US of A plays protector for you
James, Dallas, USA
I, like most of the people I know, was brought up to love and defend America. I must say that if I knew Bush had eight more years in office, I would seriously consider moving to Canada.
Rick, Monticello,
The economy:
1. Wall Street has set increasing records since 9/11.
2. Unemployment is down (discounting temp summer school kids).
Security:
1. The US has not been attacked on our own soil since 9/11.
2. Under clinton, we were constantly attacked by radical islamic nutjobs.
Terry, Kentucky, USA
I believe President Bush has done an excellent job having come into office just before 9/11. He is still a hero to many including my family. I believe his decisions will be viewed in a different light given time.
Rebecca Rowney, Mosheim, TN,
President Bush will be treated very kindly by history. As a true leader in hardtimes. With the Iraq war looking more and more like a winning situation there is true hope for the rest of the mideast. God bless America.
Steven E, Eden Valley, USA
I get a real laugh out of all the negative comments about Bush and his administration. These people are so bereft of intelligence and understanding of how a nation is to be run and it's a pity that they haven't a clue as to why we are at war with terrorism. Bob P. Lacey Township NJ USA
Bob Phillips, Lanoka Harbor, USA
Those who say that GW Bush was a good president, and made the correct decisions, are either naive or have a vested interest in war and the procurement of arms.
Matt, Brighton, UK
After all the mayhem that Bush caused with the Iraqi war, it would only be appropriate if he resigned even before his term runs out. And if he doesn't, there is an effort to impeach him currently being voted on in congress.
Hopefully Barack Obama will undo some of the harm caused by Bush
Joe, Cleveland, USA
Bush will easily go down in history as the worst U.S. president of all time. He was truly and literally a disaster. He has squandered hundreds of thousands of lives, billions of dollars, the international good will toward the U.S. Anything but making us safer, he has placed us in untold peril.
jim, Santa Rosa, United States
Having lived with Bush disaster for eight years now (I as among the 10 percnt of Americans) right after 9/11 who still thought he the same incomptent frat boy and failed businessman he was on 9/10), I have to say I am quite surprised by the tone of the interview. Bush has committed war crimes.
Richard Burt, Gainesville, USA
Get over it, America is not the only country to loose citizens to terrorism and death, look at Burma, China and the 17 or so countries that lost hundreds of thousands from the tsunami in the Indian ocean, none of these countries waged pre-emptive war on the world. Bush, just go away..forever.
Leonard Riddick, Charleston, USA
That's what people said about Harry Truman during his tenure. Bush, while making many mistakes will not be considered the worst president. Jihadist groups, specifically Al Qaeda are in decline. They rushed to Iraq, made a tough situation very tough, and the West is defeating them finally.
Wayne, Orlando, Florida, USA
Hey Harry in London, when the economy is as good as it is in America it can stand a slow down every now and again. The housing market didn't crash, it reset, which is a good thing when you really think about it. I travel all over the world and I'll take my country every time.
David, Sunbury, NC, USA
the solution to the oil & terror problem is to export the saudi royal family to switzerland or england (their choice) and take over the saudi oil fields, under the pretense that the 9/11 attacks were saudi based and led (indisputable facts). advise OPEC we are now a member.
larry, orange, usa
Whatever you say about Bush, one thing remains the same: no matter how hard they tried, there have been no terrorist attacks since 9/11, and taking out Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden on the lam (never mind his henchment going down one after the other), how can you not give the man some credit?
Neek, OC,
God bless President Bush. The free world salutes him.
Chris, Sydney, Australia
I must say Im impressed. Clearly the bulk of comments here are pro-Bush and seem to cite his sincerity. Well good for you. Im more results orientated myself. As far as I can tell the US economy is on its knees, the housing markets are collapsing and gas now $4 per gallon. Is this really good?
harry , London, UK
War with Iraq was not the answer, not even close. A war on fossil fuels and the cartel that controls them and sponsors terrorism and mayhem was in order.
A return to fiscal and corporate responsibility by re instituting a modicum of regulation on industry.
8 years flushed down the toile
Don, Madrid, Spain
I believe Bush was the worst president ever for USA. Please American people vote for Mr Obama, he can really bring a future for you and some hope the world.
oliberal, toulouse, france
I understand that people on the left are upset about how Bush seemed like a "cowboy". Good people can disagree. I for one, am so glad to have had Bush helping make sure that the world is a safer place. History will prove him correct. He is a decent human being who is not perfect. None of us are.
GF, Orange County, California, USA
Dear Sir:
Unfortunately for President Bush his policies in the Middle East created a powerful Iran. An objective that Iran had not been capable of with war. They are now more powerful than they ever imagined possible.
That legacy will haunt us for years to come.
baynes, edgartown, usa
George Bush is a very harismatic person and as the president of the world power was a right person on a right place. I wish to America another great leader, whose policy will bring this country stabilisation.
Patrycja, Mysłowice, Poland
GWBush is an underrated president. He is not a war-mongering, anti-peace, anti-multilateralist. Only in time will people come to understand him and his policies in such a difficult period of U.S. history.
John, London, UK
I believe History will fall on the side of Bush, as Scott Wells posted early.
Now if we have to, we've access to Iran from both sides, which I hope will not be needed. But they are under a strange leadership, ( IRAN ) and something tells me old bones, we going to be going there in the near future.
BillW, Branford, CT, USA
May God Bless President Bush and his family. He has done all that one man could be expected to do and done it honestly and as openly as possible and more openly probably than should have been done. It is the nature of decent God-fearing men to reflect on their actions as they leave an assignment.
sbgausa, Marietta, USA
I agree with Mike Hughes. Mr Bush did not say "I would go back and change my actions:, he simply said he wanted the world to view the actions differently. This, I think, shows why the War On Terror has turned out the way it has. Because of leaders talking and not acting
Don Terry, Dallas, United States
Yes, I agree his legacy will be viewed much more favourably in hindsight. In fact I'm sure he will go down in history as the last of the great Presidents.
Scotty, Melbourne,
I hope Obama is the Nationalist we all want him to be, the war wouldn't be such a big deal if Europe, China and the rest of the countries we are spoon feeding OUR money to could generate their own cash. Forgive me but becoming a Globalist Compulsory
Consumerist Poverty state is not my idea of heaven
Sam, jackson, United States of America
For those of you anti-war/Bush people, what would of you done after 9/11? Sounds to me you would of done nothing. Another question, if it was your spouse, child, mother, father killed in 9/11, what would you have wanted done?
God Bless Pres. Bush. You have made good choises from a hard situation
Jay, Pensacola, USA
When Chairman Mau was asked his opinion on the French revolution,he said it was early days, and difficult to say,the implication being that only time and history will reveal the effectiveness of peoples actions. to judge events still ongoing ,is to say the least , unwise .
Eddy, Bury St.Edmunds, uk
Bush like so many other politicians, for example Blair, thinks so much in terms of words, as opposed to actions. He says not 'I could have acted differently' but 'I could have used a different rhetoric.' I read this I should have put a better spin on my actions. What about the actions themselves?
Mike Hughes, Copenhagen,
I believe George w has been a strong and courageous president. A rare man of integrity in todays political world. I hope the next US president is half as good, half as resolute. The world needs a strong American president.
JT, stortford, UK
Bush was the right man for the job. A true democratic Muslim nation in the Middle East will go a long way to fixing the problems there. It is a long term fix not a short term patch that liberals are so fond of. By the way, Al-Qaeda after focusing its entire efforts on Iraq is near-strategic defeat.
Scott Wells, New York, U.S.A.
What "unilateralism"? Several leading countries voted and acted in support of the UN resolutions and their ally, the USA. It was NEVER unilateral, and to say otherwise is gross negligence & cowardice. By the way, Iraq did have WMD technology, equipment, experience, intent, and did not cooperate.
Charles Smith, Columbus, Georgia, USA
History will be kind to George Bush because expectations of him were so low yet the actual positive results will last for generations.
Al-Qaeda almost destroyed. Afghanistan mainly pacified. Installing the first Arab democracy in Iraq. All necessary.
A truly decent and remarkable man.
Steven, London, UK
I think President Bush is a decent and honorable man. I did not always agree with his decisions, but I believe that he made them in good faith. I am grateful to President Bush for his leadership and I wish him well.
Cassie, Alexandria, VA, USA
If you want change in America, forget the Democrats and the Republicans. Eliminate the Electoral College, allow third parties to run more easily (both the GOP and Dems work to kill 3rd parties) and switch to a parliamentary system. As it is now, no matter who wins, its the status quo.
Bill Green, Highland, CA, USA
The libs and the Eurosocialists have used Bush as a whipping boy for the past several years. History will judge him much more kindly than the liberal pundits and the hate spewing left wingers. Wait until November. Obama will NOT be elected. The American left can hang it up, your day has passed.
Jackson Simpson, Florida, USA
I am not a fan of "W", but it is funny that the article says that it was "his refusal to ratify Kyoto". The reality is that the US Senate is the governmental body that ratifies treaties. They voted 95-0 in a pre-emptive vote against Kyoto in 1997. Amazing how W gets blamed for that!
John W., Indianapolis, USA
I am sorry to say that I believe these are the musings of a depressed man. It helps absolutely no one, especially our servicemen and their families, to hear this kind of talk which plays into the hands of the Blame America first crowd who have abused America's servicemen for years. Disgraceful.
FAK, Cincinnati,
WAKE UP NO ATTACKS since 9/11! Stop, here is what happened during Clintons years 1995-96 24 dead Saudi Arabia, 1998 - 224 dead Kenya/Tanzania 2000 USS Cole, 17 dead 1994 WTC 6 dead 1993 2 CIA killed in VA 1999 217 dead Egypt Air near NYC not to mention Somalia fiasco.
M. Allen, Downey, CA, USA
Bad legacy... Sure... But the worst ever? We have absolutely no persepective of history. How about Calvin Coolidge who did absolutely nothing to help the economy in the years before the depression? That's just one example among many... We need to caution ourselves against kneejerk reactions.
Kevin Alexander, Shreveport, LA, United States
The liberal boobs who mindlessly repeat the mantra "GWBush is evil, a failure, etc", crack me up. You people cant think for yourselves. You dont know why you say what you say, you have just heard it so much from the brahmin luddites of the Green and Democrat parties that you cant reason 4 yourselves
Mike, Texas,
it is disheartening to see the written garbage on both sides. this isn't black or white. the lack of respect shown by both sides shows intellectual weakness or dishonesty. the opposition is reasonable. live in the real world. read from more sources. it's a complex issue
Paul, Miami,
Anyone who trashes President Bush--Please do not call on my help when they blow your front door off your home or Office. We do not need a weak passive pansy in the White House. The Democrats are still crying over Florida and want The President and V P to face an unending stream of legal harasment.
Jerry, Leesburg, Fl, USA
misty: kept us protected from our global enemies? do u live under a rock or a stupid spell? approx 650,000 illegals into the USA every 6 months protecting us? try this one: bin laden was buying everything related to wmd's & approximately 20 suitcase nukes off the black market since '93. sleep well.
michael, sicklerville, USA
I applaud George W. Bush for taking a stand, even if he was the only one standing. Sure he and his administration made some errors, but history will reveal that his zealous efforts to rid the world of Islamic terrorists was not in vain. How quickly our nation has forgotten the pain we felt on 9/11
Steve, Pittsburgh, USA
Although im about it do it, i truly don't understand why people can't comment on topic. What does high gas prices have to do with the said story above? If people were to focus an ounce of the hatred they have for the President then we might be able to move forward...long live the Republic
Mark, CA, USA
4 yrs after LBJ, USA still in Vietnam.

4 yrs after Clinton, USA in terrorist war he wouldn't fight.

To My Commander-In-Chief, President Bush,
When I shook your hand at Butts Army Airfield, Ft. Carson, CO on 11/24/03 I said, "I'm praying for you sir," To that you said "That's the most important thing." God appointed you as president as He appoints all authority amongst men. God Bless You Sir!
SSG Cynthia Lyons, Ft. Carson, CO, United States of America
it will be impossible for americans to atone for their support of a criminal regime unless they bring them to a war crimes tribunal no different than what was needed at Nuremberg. Only then will the world truly heal and reaccept americans to the ranks of civilization again.
John buonamia, atlanta, usa
I really don't count the rest of the worlds opinions here.
Four attacks under Clinton. Zero after 9/11 under Bush.
The timing of the WTC attacks were off by a couple of hours. if they had hit it a few hours later it would have been 50,000 dead.
They have made it clear, death to America.
Marc, America, usa
I wish there had been more candor from the Bush administration. The reality is Afghanistan is a "just" war, Iraq is a strategic war. Islamic extremists need to be removed for public safety. American economic stability requires more US-friendly regimes in the middle east.
Frank, Ottawa,
I love president Bush , as far as i,m concerned he did the correct thing in taking the fight to the Islamic terrorists on there home turf and not letting them export any more terror to our shores here in America, i will never understand how or why people in this country forget the lessons of sept 11
Tim Stevens, Kane Illinois, USA
Please tell me if the U.S. really believed Hussein actually had WMD's, why did we allow 3/4 of our military forces gather as sitting ducks in Kuait? What governmental brainiac could possibly allow 3/4 of our military destroyed in a flash?
There were no WMD's or our leaders were mental midgets!
Jimmy Carter, Plains, USA
I find it extremely disrespectful that many media outlets think it's OK to continuously refer to our President as Mr Bush. What happen to respect for our Leader? You should make it less obvious which side of the aisle you're on.
Johnny Cooper, Richmond, USA
"Acknowledging that his refusal to ratify the Kyoto Protocol once created consternation in Europe," The Senate is responsible for ratifying treaties, not the President. In 1997, the Senate passed a resolution telling then President Clinton that they wouldn't even bother to vote on it.
Paul, Los Gatos, USA
George W. Bush liberated over 50 million people in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Ronald Reagan liberated over 100 million people in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
It's amazing that people on the left - ostensibly concerned about human suffering and human rights - can't acknowledge this.
Charles, Alexandria, USA
Get over it and quit whining. You have more blessings than a
human being deserves. We need to have more citizens who
appreciate being Americans than citizens who sit around complaining & crying about things that they don't even begin to
comprehend. There are too many spoiled brats! L, US
Louise Kurtz, Columbus, United States
President Bush is not as good as those who idolize him gush nor as evil as those who demonize him decry. He is ONE MAN, attempting to navigate his way through the minefield that is our world today, within a political community that too often is self-important and devoid of common sense. Bless him!
A.L, Glens Falls , USA
What a bunch of crying idiots. I've read enough of the comments (clearly made by people who never had to fight for their freedom, or others, for real). There isn't a one of you pathetic so called Americans that has had to give up so much as a piece of toilet paper. Whiners, all of you libs.
tj, albuquerque, usa
how can you compare bush to a past president? You people are nuts! Do you really think GWB is innocent of everything he has screwed up in the last 8 yrs? GWB has destroyed the america we had before he came along. You were sold on a war, you bought it hook line and sinker. LOL Get real!
Paul, Shelby, USA
Hilarious listening to people in the world who do nothing but benefit from America whine about her on computers invented by americans, over the internet created by americans from homes that speak their native languages thanks to (GASP!) americans. We feed them, we keep them. . .prodigal sons indeed

michael, brooklyn, USA
Now Fred, I really don't think President Bush will go down as the worst president ever. I think Mr. Carter would be jealous.
Steve Schmaljohn, Tipton,
The president has been deceitful, self serving and not inquisitive. Thank God we only have a few more months of the atrocity that is the Bush-Cheney administration. The republican brand is indeed dead. I get little comfort in knowing that Bush may realize that his bravado was ill conceived.
James Haire, Memphis , USA
How dare any European say that America supported Sadaam soley. They did too and they are still supporting Iran as they develope their atomic missle programs. Did we make mistakes in Iraq; yes. Is Europe with us or not; we never know until they are crying for our help. Shame on you; not Bush!
Bo, Tulsa,
This post is a great reminder that the social pathology of evil, war and greed that infected Nazi Germany in the 1930's is still virulent in the United States. Nothing of what was predicted by the criminal administration of Bush has come true....America is still in danger.
Joel, Milwaukee, USA
A democractic government in Iraq, and Afghanistan, a decline in world wide terrorism, the dissolution of Al Qaeda, the return of conservative leaders in Germany,France, and England, quelling the aggression in North Korea, not allowing another attack on American soil, hmmm doesn't seem like a bad legacy.
stephen sabo, san diego, usa
We in Europe have been lead to believe that he's an aberration and not representative of the general American public, and that we shouldn't judge all Americans by him.
Whilst its true that we certainly shouldn't judge them ALL by him, the comments left here show he was far from unrepresentative.
Francis Connelly, Weymouth,
President Bush has done a fine job. He has been willing to make hard choices and history will prove he made the right choices. Whoever becomes our next president will inherit opportunities that will make for a better world... It has taken 8 years to clean up Clinton's mess.
Brett, Cleveland, USA
Once again, Bush is confusing the Al Qaeda "war" with the war on Iraq. The Dead or Alive threat was ok. I didn't hear many people complain about that. Unfortunately, the next year, he said OBL didn't matter, a statement nothing short of absurd. It was his propaganda on Iraq that was the problem.
duane lominac, va beach, usa
It is truly shocking that people think he has made us safer.. How by taking away civil rights in America? Everything he has said has been PROVEN wrong and show his total incompetence. What goals of this war have been accomplished? A better iraq? Instead of Saddam Hussein killing his people we are!
A , Venice, United States
I am just SO SORRRRY that the guy is going to come back to Texas (his adopted state). I say go back to Maine with Mommy and Daddy. Don't put the people in Dallas (Highland Park) at risk of some sort of terrorist attack aimed at your library. Putting all the students on the: SMU campus at risk. I sure think it is stupid on their part to build his library there. Can you imagine the cost of security not only SMU will endure but the citizens of Highland Park too? Wow I know the have a lot money there, but I sure would not want my taxes to go up to protect some ones library that is so hated in the world.
Gary, Dallas, US
President Bush told America over and over and over again why we were in Iraq and Afghanistan. I know because I saw and heard many of his speeches via tv and would download them from C-SPAN. He did not lie to us. He took a tough approach to a dangerous situation. He has nothing to apologize for.
Helen, Newport News, US
After seven years the man has an epiphany?! Puhleeze! Even a fool can apologize after the fact. The problem is as a leader you are not allowed to be foolish, bullish, divisive and reckless. Had he surrounded himself with real advisors instead of of sycophants this war migh have been avoided.
Marie, California, U.S.
George W. Bush - Thank you going with what was RIGHT over what's LEFT. It wasn't popular but you did what was RIGHT and only history will prove it just like history proved Reagan's leadership over the Berlin Wall, Unions, and the Soviet Union's arms race. Thanks for stability!
Brandon Waite, Westlake Village, CA, USA!!!
Bush has made mistakes, but I'm certainly thankful that he's led us for the past eight years. He has been resolute and level-headed in leading our battle against Islamic extremism. Thanks in no small part to his policies, American hasn't been attacked since 9/11 and al-Qaeda is retreating globally
Emmett, Greenwich, USE
One man took on a Superpower. Aided by an incompetent president and a weak congress, he baited us into an ingenious trap. One man got everything he wanted; troops out of Saudi Arabia, a bankrupted U.S. economy, and oil over $100 a barrel, and he did it with a few million dollars. Osama Bin Laden.
Rob, Los Angeles, Ca.,
One more thing...Why hasn't he met with Cindy Sheehan? Didn't he just say he tries to meet with the families of fallen soldiers? Well, what is she? I'll tell you what she is - a mother in pain who deserved respect and a few minutes of this president's time. Coward!
Marie, California, U.S.
What a pile of moronic comments on this. President Bush upheld his primary duty as an American president: to defend this country against attack from without and within. Only a fool or a Democrat would demand his impeachment for doing his constitutional duty.
Indga, NYC, US
Iraq war was not needed. Sadam, while being an abohrant dictator, was not our resposibility. He was not a threat to us. Look what war has done. Our 4100 tropps are dead, 10000 crippled or disfugured for life, another 15000 injured. over 500 Billion dollars spent. What a shame! Shame on us!
Shri Shende, Fremont, USA
Scary - reading the ignorant comments of non-Americans commenting on this triggers an instinct to support Bush. If that's not a reason to heed their own calls to stay out of foreign nations' internal business, I don't know what is.
Steve O., Chicago, USA
Most of us will never know, in our lifetime, whether President Bush made the correct decision. If President Roosevelt, or President Truman, did not enter WW2, or drop the bomb on Hiroshima, both Democrats, would the outcome of WW2 been different? We will never know.
Finley, Villanova, USA
Legacy of president Bush will be 7 years of prosperity with record low unemployment thanks to his tax policies.Compare this to Clinton's silly bow for success thanks only to Reagan's tax cuts.
Remember 18% approval for dem's congress blocking any fuel initiatives. That's Pelosi legacy and our pain.
Peter M., Boonton, USA
He is listening - you are only upset that he is not listening to you. Get a dose of reality and get over Al Gore not winning the election.
Joel, Cincinnati, USA
Bush is contrite only because he's been forced to face the overwhelming wave of public rejection of his war policies, his arrogant demeanor and, well, just his plain lack of forthrightness and poor leadership.
The blood of the innocent lives lost and maimed are on his hands - the US needs Obama.
Mr. Ramon, Stone Mountain, USA
Shouldn't he regret his whole presidency? He accomplished NOTHING. Six months is to long, he can go right now and no one would notice.
Rhonda, Vallejo, USA
Mr Bush is trying to rewrite eight years of failure. He absolutely is a war monger who started planning his crusades in Iraq the same day he took the oath of office. He lied about the actual threat and used nationalistic rhetoric to whip up support and threaten opponents. History won't be kind.
Joe, Baltimore, usa
All the idiots whining about torture and how the terrorists are going to now treat their captives (women) so bad have a problem with lack of grey matter. Torture? Making someone think they are drowning, frightening them, lack of sleep does not constitute torture. Sawing off heads does!!
Ed, Ponca City, OK,
To the clown in Brooklyn calling for Impeachment, You would have to get past this soldier and majority of the military to impeach best damn president in years. Oh yea I do have 3 tours and currently in Afghanistan. I am sitting here watching our news and how negative and wrong it is. Libs= liars
CW2, tampa, USA
George W Bush will be vindicated by history as one of the USA's greatest Presidents.
Michael Abbott, Los Angeles, USA
The Taliban and Al-Quaida's base of operations was Afghanistan, not Iraq. The U.S. failed miserably in its incursion, instead insuring the disdain and hatred of all Islamic nations. This great experiment in democracy ended with 9/11 and the Patriot Acts. Our Founders are rolling in their graves.
M. Roth, Henderson, NV, US
The biggest DUFUS of the 20th cent. is none other than Neville Chamberlain. Lets just remember how WRONG 'peace in our time' has been PROVEN to be, while we codemn Bush, this great man, who has, as of yet, proven to be wrong in his vision for democracy in the middle east.
Justin, Beltsville, MD, USA
After the democrats have to spend all their time demonizing the new republican president, which they will, they will have little time to keep dumping on President Bush. Then the facts will start coming out that will show that President Bush was really a pretty intellegent and nice guy.
Russ, Pasco Wa., USA
Iraq is the perfect battlefield to fight Al Qaeda, which has no home & spans multiple countries. The problem is that in leading up to that event in '02-03, you can't come out and say that's your strategy without tipping your hand. We'll keep killing them there so we don't have to kill them here.
Jody, Russellville, AR
Bush did not start a war. Islamofacists started a war by attacking the US on 9/11. Bush is the first president since Roosevelt to defend the US after an attack and I'm glad he did it. The rest of the world may consider it OK to tolerate and appease Islamofacists but I do not.
vj, towson, usa
Story makes no mention of the Articles of Impeachment being introduced 3 times in the U.S. Congress. Wonder what Mr. Bush would have to say about that portion of his legacy?
The man lives in a controlled reality of his political dynasty's making. Here in the real world, his crimes are legendary
B, Brooklyn, USA
We whine about GWB, gas prices, mortgage defaults, joblessness, high taxes. You look around and say "someone needs to do something", well that someone is you. Vote, drive slower, pay your bills, educate yourself. Iranian hostages, USS Cole, marines killed in Lebanon, 9/11...GWB did something.
J Teal, TX, USA
Re: Bush has a "higher degree" than Obama??
It is my understanding that Bush has an MBA from Yale. Obama has a JD from Columbia, where he was the first black editor of the law review. How is that "higher"???
Petra, Honolulu, USA
Bush offered only cautious optimism about a recent decline in violence in Iraq.....
Probably because a majority of the population is dead or has fled to a better place. Even the terrorists are getting tired of that mud hole. Remember Bin Laden?
Jeff, Sacramento / CA, USA
Bush has blundered our entire foreign policy. He has done more damage than any president I know of. His continued obstinance is an insult to every peace loving American. He should withdraw immediately from Iraq and let that country determine it's own destiny. He's not listening....still.
Woodie, NY,
Bush doesn't mention the 1 million plus Iraqis that were killed! Or the 5 million refugees that were created! Or the 30,000+ disabled vets!
gangstergovernment.com
stan, dc, usa
He's right!
Sadam WAS a threat to America and many other countries. Remember, what you don't know might just hurt you. The 9/11 attacks, while not DIRECTLY linked to Sadam, were definitly INDIRECTLY linked to him! And, that creep in Iran is trying to pull the same stunt courtesy of Russia!
Carl, Ohio, USA
I hope that if the Iraq war turns out well and improves the Middle East by showing the nations there the benefits of democracy and capitalism that historians give Bush the credit for this and also point out that it was done despite attempts by the Democrats to undermine all his efforts.
Steve, Houston, USA
mr. bush has been the most successful president the military-industrial(oil) complexhas ever had. as their hold on the u,s. treasury has expanded , our quality of life has deteriorated as have our civil rights and our moral stance in the world. he has shown us he has no moral compass.
john bulette, accomac, us
Just think what a different world we could have had today if those voters who were mislead by Republican lies and fear mongering had been clear headed and humble enough to vote Al Gore into office. The last eight years would have been about energy independence. Please Republicans -THINK!!!!
Alice, Las Vegas, USA
Democrats were not "spoon fed" pro-war information anymore than US allies, who had reached the SAME conclusion as to Saddam and his intent to pursue WMD.
Bashing Bush because a daily past-time for the global mainstream press, which has replaced that hobby with Obama worship.
David, Tashkent, Uzbekistan
Sorry, but I was never proud of Bush nor did I EVER believe any of the propaganda leading up to the war. I worked as an investigative news producer until I got fired over a story that was recently validated by Scott McClellan's new book. Bush still has no idea what he has done to this country.
Jennifer, Boston, USA
God Bless George W. Bush and his administration!!
How soon everyone forgets 911
Shawn, Inverness, USA
So many seem to be forgetting that the Iraq war would not have even been possible were it not for the outrageous shortcomings of the UN. Remember the 10+ years that Saddam thumbed his nose at world prior to the war while the UN sat idly by looking hopelessly weak? Is it any wonder this happened?
Matt, Baltimore, US
Bush is a puppet and this is another spin job to try to make it easier for McCain to compete against Obama. Real Americans never wanted war for oil and knew they were lying in the first place and real Americans still want these war criminals tried and convicted for the atrocities they have committed
Steven, Austin, TX,
Wow, we have already forgot what 911 was all about. Actually I think most people don't even understand what 911 was all about.
It's a shame that because Pres bush was not a salesman like Clinton or Reagan that people were not smart enough to understand.
Everyone should pause and look around.
Rick Balswald, Cincinnati, USA
e was just trying to take care of us. I do not believe that President Bush is a liar. He is only human and I believe with all my heart that he did the best he could with an impossible situation. The press was so very unfair to him and us for not reporting in a fair way.
Janice Stokes, Mansfield, Texas, USA
Regret all you want George W. Bush, there are lots of people still dying. Just more propaganda to get sympathy + votes for the McCain/Bushs era. Contrary to pro-Bush/McCain regime beliefs, life is delicate. And it is NOT honorable to die for any cause despite what the right wing teaches.
David, Pasadena,
God bless you President Bush!!!! Thank you for having the courage to stand up and do the right thing after 9/11. History will be kind to you sir.
Dan Everette, NC, USA
dan everette, macclesfield, United States
I'm not buying it. The 'Times' that is.
Bush used a variety of rhetoric in trying to convince the 'free' world of the rationale behind removing a conniving dictator.
Try Al Gore's 1992 "coddling dictators" foreign policy speech regarding Iraq; "Don't put a wishbone where a backbone should be"
Stuart MacLean, Portland, Oregon, USA
The USA was attacked by 19 criminals on 9/11 & a rogue president went haywire, killing over 4,000 military personnel, maiming thousands, and destorying our economy and now he's sorry? Well, excuuuuuse me.......
Dali, Bonsack, VA
Impeach him. Imprison him. He is a Criminal of the highest order. Literally. He needs to be removed from office immediately. Support Congressman Kucinich's 35 Articles of Impeachment of George W. Bush.
Tyler Durden, Portland, USA
"his country" was not misunderstood! many of us made clear that we opposed his presidency and his war. the man is a liar, and i hope he doesn't do anything else in his remaining months to further embarrass our country and kill more people.
mike, New York, USA
Mike in Nevada city should keep in mind that Bush senior was not just GWB's dad but a president of the United States. What does he think we should do when a foreign leader puts out a contract on one of our presidents? It is a serious matter and rightly made war a foregone conclusion.
Chris, San Francisco,
Sounds to me like another way of Bush saying, "I screwed up, I know I screwed up and I'm sorry for it ". At least it sounds as if he's maybe a bit remorseful for what he's done to the American Economy and the Constitution.
Jason, Danville, USA
how many "thinly veiled warnings" did he deliver, exactly?
alan silver, portland or, usa
The only reason Bush is saying this now is that he is trying to get historians to write a more favorable view of him. Well, it won't work. It's too little, too late for Bush. He is a horrible president and history will not treat him kindly nor will it be fooled by fake humility.
pmorlan, Louisville, USA
The thing about George W. is he really was foolish enough to believe he was competent to be president. Unfortunately when you mix a simpleton like Bush with an evil person like Cheney, it doesn't work out well for the rest of the planet.
Luke Stone, Seattle, WA, USA
George Bush is not too bright. He is the worst American president in all of history.
Jeff, Rugby, North Dakota
President George Walker Bush: A decent man who faced the greatest challenge of the 21st century - extremist Islamic jihad. Make no mistake about it, his legacy will be one of courage, perseverance and determination in the face of IMMENSE scrutiny. His Presidency was flawed but aren't they all?
Rory, Reno, NV, USA
I don't get it, which one is it? Is bush an idiot who can't give speeches, or is he brilliant for "misleading" the American people. The same people believe both lies.
The real "genius" is the "liberal media" who created a following of Lie believing Americans.
Zach, Michigan,
well, at least he will go down in history as the Worst. President. Ever.
Fred Jones, Modesto, United States
Americans must remember that we are a truly blessed nation of freedom, human and natural resources that past generations worked and lived hard to establish and insure. Pointing fingers and diverting from true issues of concern seem to be the mantra the Masters of the Media are feeding at the trough to minds of the populous.
Splash some coldwater-reality on your face and put down the kool-aid.
Bian, Stillwater, OK, USA
Bush is misunderstood. He made tough decisions in the face of 9/11. Looking back, he went into Iraq on bad intelligence. It's easy to sit back and scoff at Bush at this point. One day, he'll be remembered as a man that lead our country during one of the most brutal attacks on our own soil.
John, Vienna, Va.,
GWB has gone the way all gunslingers go, they gamble, kill, lie and destroy every thing in there path, and in the twilite of there years, they are filled with remorse and regret. so long good buddy. .i
Sonny B, Riverside ca., USA
I am disgusted with how the democrats and biased media have handled issues when it came to President Bush. Instead of acknowleding his true candicy, they basically had a toddler sized tantrum for 8 years. They are determined to make sure Iraq is a total failure. They are the true losers.
Katie, Pa,
A hopelessly inarticulate, wishy-washy, second-rate leader, product of a powerful but elitist Republican party. I would only ask the American people to think very, very hard before they vote blindly for another person like this.
CB, Caracas, Venezuela
Mr. Bush will be remembered in 50 years as Harry Truman is now remembered.. Everyone hated Truman, but history has revealed that leaders make tough decisions. The Nature of politics in Washington today does not allow a President to succeed except by overcoming the noise of politicians.
Gary Reinsch, Edmond, OK, USA
Bush is a traitor. He was warned during the Spring and Summer of 2001 that a big attack on the U.S. was coming. He choose to do nothing. Although there was a PUBLIC warning in late June 2001 to be on the lookout for young Muslim men who might hijack aircraft, Bush REMOVED the alert BEFORE 9/11.
Jame Aba, Centennial, USA
I disagree with Ernesto Aguilar. Before the war, there were MILLIONS injured, tortured, displaced, raped, forgotten, buried in mass graves in Iran. These were Saddam Hussein's own people. He killed them. Perhaps the most important point seldom made, is that we have not had another attack since 9/11.
Glynn, Shelby, USA
I suspect history will not be kind to man.
Kathleen Fitz, Seattle, WA, USA
i hope he lives long to feel his regret many times over. unfortunately that is likely the worst punishment he will receive for this most dishonorable presidency.
Chris Jones, west des moines, usa
God Bless President Bush for keeping us safe..
Unfortunately, in every war there have been mistakes but the surge is working & already some troop withdrawal has started but not in a way that will harm the gains that our brave soldiers produced for the Iraqi people.
J. BAXEY, Houston, USA
Sorry, but as a German I have to tell you, that your view is "astounding". Saddam was a child of US protection and did most of his cruelties in US-interests.....
<br/>20 years and 10000 of dead and tortured people later, he forgot to listen to the big chief in the west and became a burden.
Michael Heise, Speyer, Germany
In my view George W. Bush is the greatest U.S. president in this century. :)
Jenny J, Portland, USA
A man who lied to the American public, took a public "my way
or the highway line", twisted intelligence data to suit his needs, castigated Allies who refused to join in a futile war, let the lobyist control the policy decision (aka pharmaceuticals in Medicare bill), etc.,etc.etc.
carlos, santa Maria, USA
I love our President. I think he has done all he could do to protect our country. Not all of us had to deal with 9-11 like he did. God Bless Him. And I don't think EVERYTHING, is his fault. He is NOT the only one that thought we should go to war.
Julie, USA, Tennessee, USA
Although I think Mr Bush could have been tougher regarding the immigration laws I applaud him as President for keeping us safe. He is not a horrible man as some of you have said in your posts. God Bless you Mr Bush.
Annette, Westchester, USA
I respect the President and most of his decisions, all of you democrats have a short memory that your wonderful Clinton said that Iraq had WMD's. I am sick of you . God bless George Bush.
Nancy Watkins, Nashville TN, USA
One would almost feel sympathy for this man of modest intelligence who was clearly in over his head, if it were not for his swagger and big talk. Certainly a man too big for his britches.
Kathleen Fitz, Seattle, WA, USA
Bush is a little wanna-be man that was handed a desk in the white house while the neo-cons schemed, plotted, and executed the worst constitutional abuses in the history of the USA. Bush will be remembered for one thing: he sat in the oval office and watched, bewildered, the death of America.
Larry Knodle, Chicago, USA
Did you notice that the anti-President Bush posters can barely express a coherent (or original) thought?
Any president's success (or failure) is not apparent until many years after he leaves office. To judge too early is to show one's ignorance.
As for me, I am grateful for President Bush.
Robert, Boston, USA
As a Texan who never supported him, I can tell everyone his braggadocio was essential to the success of selling the war. There was no law he wouldn't trample, no torture (of non-Americans) he would not commit, and when asked he said: We don't torture? What a crock!
Ty Kelly, Houston, USA
"...I also have an obligation to make sure that those lives were not lost in vain"
Mr. Bush: How does continuing an unethical war make it more just? At what point does it become "worth it"? Will we suddenly have everlasting peace because of our country's sacrifice during your stewardship?
Bumbu, Fairfield, USA
GW Bush must be the smartest person alive in America as he was able to mislead the entire congress and each and every US citizen.
So which is it libs? GW Bust the genius? or a commander in cheif that beat back the terror of the east?
Pick one.
David, Phoenix, USA
"Acknowledging that his refusal to ratify the Kyoto Protocol once created consternation in Europe"
Huh?
1. The President of the US does not have the authority to ratify treaties.
2. Kyoto was rejected unanimously by the US Senate (the body that does) during the Clinton administration.
J, US,
So George is only willing to admit to a few overstatements. No mention of kidnapping, torture, violating the constitution, state censorship or any of that stuff. What does it take to qualify for impeachment?
droach, kapaa, United States
Not a single attack on American soil since 911. Muslim radicals and specifically Al Qaeda are losing credibility in the Muslim world because of their cruel and gruesome methods. They are the true war criminals. I say keep the fight on their doorstep.
Jim, Charleston, USA
The liberal media and the Democrats have done a smashing job of trying to destroy a fine President, George W. Bush. They all hate him because he is a good, God fearing man who has done a tremendous job under the most difficult of circumstances...God forbid they get the kind of president they want!
Susan Correa, Omaha,
The ignorance here tonite is mind boggling. President Bush was not on vacation, he was in Fla. at a school when told of 9/11.!! 8,000 casualties in the landing at Normandy in WW II occurred in one day;...these wishy washy half informed comments over the loss of life in Iraq is: 4,000 over 5 years!!
C.E. Nelson, Jonesboro, A R, USA
Typical Bush apology. The policies are fine but the tone was wrong. And now he wants to lecture us on the importance of diplomacy. I'm sure he had to look up the definition in the dictionary. Oops, I meant Rove or someone had to look up the definition for him.
Dee Emzeer, Seoul, Korea
The demonization of Bush is ridiculous. Just because he supports different policies than you, that doesn't make him the devil or a war criminal or whatever other nonsense is posted in these comments. He isn't nearly as bad as he is portrayed. I would support him over all of the 2008 candidates.
Charlie, Miami, USA
worst president ever, belongs in jail for treason.
jack , rye,
Who was worse than Jimmy Carter. You may be too young to remember. 17% mortgage rates and the highest inflation in history. You truly do not remember! And also do your research. Whatever you say about Cheney, he does give 77% of everything he earns to charity. Al Gore gives 1%. Check it out.
Les, Spokane, Spokane
Mr, George W. Bush,
It has been an honor to live in a young country as powerful as the United States of America. It is a pleasure to know that the rightful, peaceful man who is our nations President, is a statesman and not just another politician.
Thank you Sir,
Amber Gammill, Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Thank God this bumbling darling of the right-wing neocon evangelicals will be long gone in another seven months. If Obama can drag his fellow Democrats off their fence-straddling perches, maybe... just maybe... the USofA can be restored to a position of "uncoerced" respect among its neighbors.
Bob, Oklahoma City, USA
GWB was a traitor. He put the national interests of Israel ahead of the national interests of America. I don't know who to get angrier at. White men for being such fools or Israelis for harming our country.
Kellamd, Chicago, IL, US
Sad. As Americans we eat our young and often brutalize our leadership. The Democrat race is only the most recent example. Pres. Bush's supporters are muted and his enemies are sharpening their knives to carve up his legacy. Unity? It's not who we are. Never hs been. Fools believe otherwise.
ron, bend, oregon
I do not care about your leaving a legacy. I'll just be glad when you leave. For that matter, I wish every incumbent in the House and Senate would leave with you. Is it asking too much to have a smaller Federal Govenment, Balance the Budget, Lower Taxes, Defeat, not toy with, our enemies
R L Sibbitt, Remlap, AL ,
I think Bush has done a great job especially given the alternatives to Al, "I invented the internet" Gore, and John, "I voted for the war before I voted against it", Kerry. Gen Petreus is leading us to victory in Iraq. We must say at it. Bush was no Reagan but thank God he was no Carter either!
Richard Terrell, Franklin, USA
Mr. Bush was/is an honest man that made mistakes. No one was "cherry picking intel". If that's the case then Mrs. Clinton and a whole long list of democrats are guilty as well.
Shane M. Chellis, Springfield,
Well first Steve gas is 6 bucks a gallon because of supply and demand, not some myth. Perhaps the Dems can explain why they keep talking about dependence on foreign oil when they wont let us drill, build nukes or refineries. I am sorry but thats dumb.
M. Randolph Kruger, Memphis, TN, USA
Worst president ever!!!
YT, Washington, DC, USA
Just like the people posting here hated Ronald Reagan - who turned out to be one of the greatest Presidents of the 20th century (even liberal historians grudgingly agree on this), George W. Bush will be remembered as one of the greatest Presidents of the 21st Century. Sorry folks...but it will be so
Steve Jenke, Minneapolis, USA
Bush apologists were duly warned of the disastrous consequences of the Iraq invasion, spendthrift economic policies, and lack of environmental vision. Now all Americans have to pay for the foolishness of truly the worst president the United States has had ever had.
Joel, Milwaukee, USA
I wish he would have said,
"This is a geo-political strategy to help Western Civilization in the long run by establishing a democracy in the Middle East"
I wish he wouldn't have said,
"WMDs" and "Imminent threat"
Jessica, USA,
It seems the weight of the guilty conscience is beginning to be a bit too much to bear with many in the White House. As a Canadian, and not subjected to American propaganda, I think it is still very scary that so many are still fooled by deliberate lies told by this man. Trust me, Vote Obama.
Ryan, Edmonton, Canada
Thelma- you and your family have not been blown up by a terrorist attack since 911. On sept 12 , 2001 not a single person on this earth would have believed you, if you told them that we would not have gotten hit in the next 7 years...not one and you know it. I am not even a bush fan !
S Kelley, Fairfax, VA, USA
one clown get impeached for lying about a little hanky panky while on the job. the next clown enters the circus, lies for war and personal interests, but the whole production keeps going, acrobats and all. Whats wrong with this picture and why is the price of my popcorn going up?
dc, NN, VA, USA
Sorry to state my opinion but, this President (and supporters) are in a fog.....the man (and his 2nd in command - Cheney) have left not themselves, but our nation, with a legacy that will not be looked at with favor or esteem. The Bush/Cheney team is by far the worse this nation has ever offered ,
mary, Maryville, TN, usa
THIS IS JUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
wcrogers, granbury, USA
How can any of you believe this was about Isalmofascism?
This was about the rape and overthrow of a country - the country that was raped was the United States of America and it was raped by Bush and his oil cronies.
Bottom line - look at who profited and look at who lost.
Alice, Las Vegas, USA
He will be remembered as the man who more than any other destroyed America. Nothing he can say will ever change that.
Chris, Greensboro, NC, USA
the man-child is a shameless fool who approached the responsibility of protecting the American nation and providing leadership in the world from the perspective of a venal partisan.
Joseph, Pittsburgh,
I'm puzzled by those who insist that Iraq's ignoring UN resolutions was justification for invasion, but who refuse to hear a word against Israel, which has ignored 88 UN resolutions against it, as well as refusing to be a signatory to the NPT and having a nuclear stockpile - double standards anyone?
Jane Bond, Glasgow, Scotland
Worst mistake we ever made twice.
Tim, Chicago, United States
Reagan was hated when he was President.
Now even Obama and in 2004, John Kerry claimed to follow Reagan Principles.
A Day will come when GW Bush will be revered for his courage and conviction.
His current negative image is due to the constant hammering by the biased media and looney left.
Harshad, lake forest, usa
Bush and our military have given us our Normandy. Iraq is a beachhead in the Middle East. A successful, secular democracy comprising Shia, Sunni and various minority groups working in a system of checks and balances for mutual security and prosperity will serve as a model for that region. Thanks W
Keith, St. Louis, USA
So THIS is where those dead-enders who still desperately believe in BushCo's WMD fairy stories go to die. Too bad they had to take more than 4000 young Americans and countless Iraqis with them, instead of simply admitting they were fooled by soulless con artists.
Kenji, Vancouver, Canada
I want to set the record str8 for Red Olson, 3rd Comment. He stated "for he (W) has a higher degree than Obama," The facts are these, Bush grad Harvard Bus. School with a Masters in Bus. Admin, Obama, B.S Pol. Sci Columbia and Magna Cum Laude, Juris Doctorate Harvard Law, doesn't sound higher to me!
Bruce, Atlanta, USA
Bush was a guy really anxious to go to war. Iraq was under a microscope after the first Gulf War, and no one inspecting thought they had nukes. Only Bushies were perpertrating that myth, first by chery-picking intel, then making stuff up. He couldn't wait to be a war-time president. Legacy -$6 a gal

I'm sorry so many of us allowed ourselves to be misled into this horror. Fortunately, one of our Congressmen has submitted a bill for Impeachment that will be voted on tomorrow. It won't pass , but at least it will be on the Congressional Record. It's 35 counts and took 5 hrs to read it aloud.
bk, Cincinnati, USA
President Bush is the best president of this country that we have ever had. He has protected the santity of marriage and belieies in God. God chose him to be our president and most Americans are greatfull. I am so proud of this president and absolotely love him.The country is on the write course
Jimbo, Biloxi, USA
Sadly, if you measure the success of his legislative accomplishment in his first six years without recognizing the lockstep voting without discussion or the ability for the minority party to have any contribution as success, your zealotry betrays your judgment. Surely Hitler meets that criteria.
GeoLee, Wichita, USA
Good-bye and good riddance GWB. You and your bullying will not be missed.

Misunderstood and underestimated in his own time, this man's worth will be measured differently by history. Popularity - or the lack thereof - rarely reflects merit accurately.
Melissa Short, Plano, United States
Hello doesnt anyone remember? They FOUND WMDS! 500 canisters of mustard gas only about 2 years ago. Sure they were old and most unusable but the fact that they were there proves Sadam was lying about not having made any since the early 90's. The US does what it has to do. God bless america.
mike, ft collins, USA
He has the blood of thousands of Americans killed and injured and thousands of Iraqi noncombatants on his hands and there is no way he is going to escape the verdict of history. He is a warmonger of the most cynical kind.
Kare, Bronx, NY, USA
It's funny how dems forget Clinton's strike on iraq, which, by their standards for bush, was just as "illegal and unjustified" ...seehttp://www.cnn.com/US/9812/16/clinton.iraq.speech/
Matt , Merritt Island,FL, USA
Let's not start to rewrite recent history. This man was way in over his head, was a very arrogant commander-in-chief, and now come out from top generals and Bush administration officials just how much they failed/lied. Iraq is a mess, Afghanistan neglected, Iran stronger than it's ever been. Impeach
Keith, Brookfield, CT/USA

We can now no longer declare that Jimmy Carter was the worst President this country has ever had. George Bush claims the title hands down. A puppet of Cheney and the oil barons he has delivered mightly for them. What a horrible man and a disgrace to his country.

I think Bush has done a good job. He isn't much of a strategist and he let Rumsfeld and Bremmer blow it in Iraq. He also let the Republican Congress get out of hand and vote like wannabe democrats. But he kept the country off its knees after 9/11 and presided over 7 years of economic growth.
R. Shuck, Kansas City, Kansas
Jerry From Denver: aren't you people tired of being wrong? Even jihadists websites are acknowledging the dire straits these groups are in. Sheik Ahmad al-Rishawi of the Anbari Tribal council (Sunni awakening in Iraq) is now offering to go after Bin Laden himself...jihadi numbers are DWINDLING
William Bedloe, Washington DC,
I am proud of my President. He did what had to be done after we were attacked. I disagree wholeheartedly with his lack of illegal immigration policies, but he has kept us protected from our global enemies. Now we need to continue these policies and start to attack the enemy within-illegals.
Misty, Anaheim, USA
Lots of guilty consciences sure are scapegoating Mr Bush now.
Living the largess but forgetting it takes a nation to go to war.
Were either the germans then or the americans current
totally naive to the behind the scene boot kick politics.
Markangelo, Torrance , USA
A good plan for ex-President Bush begining the 2009 Spring would be to announce he will be dedicating the rest of his file, skills and fame, sincerely without any political statements, to direct a foundation to assist the thousands of lives that were affected by this war, the injured and displaced.
Ernesto Aguilar, Newark, USA
We've been viewed as an evil hypocrisy for a long time. In college in the 90s I had some Arab and non-arab muslim friends. They told me I had no idea how much the US is hated (pre Bush,) & that the 93 WTC attack was only the start. I've visited Europe also. Let them gripe; they do it well.
John, Texas, USA
The one most disastrous attack ever on US soil occurred despite warnings aplenty, but Mr. Bush was too busy vacationing and ignoring national security reports. When he did report back, he freed all of the bin Ladens and attacked an innocent country. Freedom from the fool and his followers!

President Bush has nothing to regret. That type of people he spoke to only know that type of talk. As you all know vey well, I Thank You so much for your service. History will remember you as a true Hero and one of the best the Nation has ever had. I hope the next will do half as well. God Bless!

The Iraq war I feel is a personal Bush vendetta .. " Gulf War 2 "
It's terrible how we treated the prisoners of war. Now , think .. What they will due to our woman soldiers when they are captured?
Emma , Jackson,
Perception is reality....The mainstream media could have very easily painted GW as a champion of freedom and justice who led the charge in removing a dictator and dismantling the Al Qaeda terrorist network...Maybe not entirely accurate but much closer than the mindless, biased reporting of the MM.
Andy Burns, Charleston, USA
Our failed president, who did everything for the good of his party and nothing for the good of his fellow man, is an embarrassment to our country, and a disgrace in the world. We probably will end up with little better, as the mechanisms in place keep real change out.
GeSchmidtt, San Rafael, USA
We didn't have any economic problems until the Dems got into Congress. When Obama got the nomination last Tuesday, the price of oil jumped $10.00 a barrel and the stock market lost 300 pts. That's not confidence folks. Bush's goal to spread freedom and hope as an alternative to terror was noble
Lori LoVoi-Nieves, Tulsa, USA
I have this strange sensation of deja vu. Or is it early onset altzheimers causing him to repeat his odiously self-serving comments?
Michael Murtough, Pittsburgh, USA
I certainly agree with Storming Norman, better known as: Norman Schwarzkopf - former U.S. General in Iraq. I, a 68/69 Vietnam Veteran loath our current president, whom I originally voted for but soon came to realize it was a grave mistake. Seems G.W. now can afford to stop pretending; but I doubt he's got religion. Good riddance ..
Karl Lechten, Madison, Wisconsin, USA
on day one, back in 2000, had the prez locked himself in his bedroom back in crawford and never ventured a step further this country would have been in so much better shape. to think there are people out there who still support this man is absolutely mind boggling.

President Bush, you are my hero; you always will be. You did what was necessary when times were tough. I salute you.

Policies of immigration, energy, US$, infrastructure, envnmnt, trade, and educ are all the responsibilitis of Congress, the representatives of the people..Dennis of Dallas..The Exec. branch has the power to veto those policies if it cannot enforce. President Bush is not misunderstood at all.To take the United States to war is the most serious undertaking I can possibly imagine.Am I the only one that remembers the GWB interview "he put a contract out on my Dad"? The cross hairs were always on Saddam. Intel..puleez. It was a foregone conclusion.

Bush is despised by a majority of Americans. He is reviled in Europe and throughout the middileast. "mistakes were made" is an understatement as regards his presidency. his foreign and economic policies have bankrupted our nation. if there is a god, i pray this god brings 1-20-2009 while we

Islamic Imperialism. 1st wave 700 under Mohammad. 2nd wave 1300 under Ottoman. Got to the gates of Vienna. 3rd wave commenced in 1920 under the Muslim Brotherhood. Financed by OPEC petrodollars it got going strong in 1970. Fortunately Bush recognized what it was and went after it.
Wallace Edward Brand, Alexandria, VA, US
I am glad he was the president after 9/11. If it was Gore, we'd have more attacks on us. Good job President Bush and thank you for being the US President and not some worldwide weak appeaser. Bush never sold us out. Good man.
Joe Pepe NYC, New York, USA
Bush is determined to make sure they didn't die in vain?
That's psychopathic.
He is guilty of war crimes and anyone who cares KNOWS it.
See the 35 counts of Impeachment for evidence then call your Congressional servant NOW!!!
Brian, portland, usa
Bush is right, he will be viewed as perhaps the worst president in U.S. history. He will also be remembered as someone who lie and deceived his country into a war that is turning out to be a huge failure. Bush will be remembered for having little or no intellect and as a puppet for the neocons.
Stu Wilde, Phoenix,
I feel sorrow for those who do not see the merits of this good man - President Bush. Haters are haters... they hate things all about them.
Ray, Tacoma,wa, USA
I suspect history will be kinder to Bush than many here suppose. If one measures success by legislative accomplishment, Bush got almost everything he wanted in his first term. As for Iraq, he may prove to be another T.E. Lawrence; everything is now in place for another Ataturk.
Justin, Lexington, Virginia, USA
It's clear to me... Terrorists thought us weak. Bush was strong. Thank you Mr. President...
Steve Bahr, Longwood, USA
There are still a lot of fools here that still believe Bush.
He was approached by a hand full of Republicans , because of his sir name, to run for the greatest office, if he would just do as he was told.
The real desicisions were made by the Vice president, Dick Cheney, former head of Halliburton,
lyn, st .louis, usa
Bush is a man who did what he thought was best with grit and determination. Much of the hatred of Bush is generated by disgruntled Lefties who still can't believe they lost two elections to a Down to Earth Texan. How about the rhetoric from the jhadists!! Great diplomatic language, huh???
Kinion, Richland, USA
Not invading a country that had WMD (and then subsequently moved them to Syria) is akin to a doctor telling a patient "Well, you have cancer, but we're going to wait and see how aggressive it gets before we do anything"; it's too bad the people in this country are too short-sighted to understand.
Jen, Pittsburgh,
It saddens me to read the vitriol on this board. Remember how proud everyone was of President Bush in the days following 9/11? Nobody seemed to have a problem with GWB back then. Only when things didn't go well did some choose to turn on him. Mistakes? Sure. Intentions? Honorable.
Jeff, Weatherford, TX, USA
It is absolutely astounding the way the world and specifically the US news media has twisted the lead up to the Iraq war. The Iraqi government ignored UN sanctions and played games with weapons inspectors for more than a decade. They were given more than enough opportunities to comply!
Jeffrey A Crimmins, New York,
I think Bush did all that he could do. Everyone acts as if its a president who has the ability to declare war, when in fact, it is Congress who has the authority to do so. Congress voted forand approved this war, it wasn't one man who did everything.
b, clermont, usa
If we do not stand strong against terrorism, and attacks on America, we will leave our children a nation without freedom. If it weren't for Bush we would be viewed as a weak nation who gives in to any bully who happens down the street. The sheer hatred of Mr. Bush has helped divide the USA.
Scott, San Antonio, USA
So bush is reduced to blaming his speech writers. what a pathetic man. too bad the democrats keep running clowns and losers as presidential candidates. obama is the latest joke to pass himself off as a serious candidate. looks like mccain will win by default.
russ, seattle, usa
Kornel Balon, Chicago, United States
Disengenous posting.
The republicans were actually manufacturing the evidence the democrats were spoon fed in making their decision.
The IRAQ decision was not based on a truthful judgement, as the democrats were manipulated by Bush and his party.
Joe, Geelong, VIC Australia
It's sad that over 4000 soldiers have died in Iraq. But during the war over 200,000 Americans have died on US HIGHWAYS in random car accidents. Apply a little reasonable perspective. No one likes war, but over time it will produce Middle East peace and democracy for our children. (Think Japan, '42.)
Slobodan Grabovich, Bratislava, Slovakia
Deliberate or not, his acts are clearly criminal by any measure. He needs to be impeached along with his cohorts - Cheney, Rice, Rumsfeld, and Powell. They need to be tried in court. Tens of hundreds of thousands of innocents have been killed and hundreds of thousands of lives ruined by loss.
Mike, Boston, USA
It's really amazing how people remember their politics, but don't remember the facts. No one remembers the UN votes, but Bush lied. His opponents tell how stupid the man is, when his scholastic standing was higher than Kerry and he has a higher degree than Obama, but he's stupid. Simply amazing.
Red Olson, Richton Park, IL, USA
During the first Gulf War, George Bush Senior was smart enough to stop U.S. troops from entering Baghdad. Being a veteran, he knew the consequences of war. His son couldn't even finish his tour of duty in the Air National Guard where he allegedly served to avoid combat duty.
George, Vancouver, Canada
I guess you all admire your favorite US President, Jimmy Carter, who created Iranian mess in the first place - and he never said sorry for that, and for ruining US economy too
Larry, Sunnyvale, USA
Too bad most Americans are this ignorant of world history. Hey Larry, look up Iran-1953.
mark, tampa, usa
Librals are afraid to admit that GW BUSH is the greatest president of all time!!! We won the war with IRAQ, and the USA economy is a smashing success. Go Bushieeeeeee!!!!
(Reagan was also a great president, and so was Nixon.)
Ginsu, L.A., U.S.A.
General Georges Sada, former Iraqi second-in-command, wrote a revealing book on Iraq's WMD and how it was scuttled to Syria just before 'shock and awe'. Coupled with Saddam's own records discovered recently which confirmed it's existence, I wonder why the White House is silent on this.
Tommy Peters, Kuala Lumpur,
"Iraq was the quickest payback for 911 that Bush could find."
I agree but I do think Al Gore would've done a similar thing,he was part of the government that bombed Iraq in '98 and America were never going to let 9/11 pass without some kind of token "revenge" ,even if they had a Dem president.
Fergus Sira-Lexon, England,
The transition from the hunt for Bin Laden into war with Iraq was one of the worst hoaxs which has ever been foisted on the American people. At this point, I believe it's entirely possible that Bush has regrets. But that's not nearly enough to compensate for his lies and manipulations.
Glen Smith, Versailles, KY, U.S.A.
Wow. A bit "too little, too late," my man. You don't go to war until all other options have run out. Re: Iraq, clearly they had not.
Adios, GWB. If we elect a bag of hammers, it'll do a better job with this country than you did on your best day.
Matthew, Normal, USA
This American conservative understands fully that the Bush presidency has been an unmitigated disaster.
pjf, Los Angeles, USA
It is a shame President Bush didn't use the bully puplit more to gain more support for what I rightly believe is a just cause.
History will prove him right in the long run of course. Now if we can just open ANWR to get our oil.
Kevin , Connecticut, USA
I am so sorry I voted for all those republicans i the past, I see it was all a setup for war after war. Please forgive me. Thank God we have a peaceful president coming up now, and he does not have white hair.
Campy Fleur, soup lake, USA
Well we can bash our president for years and it is warranted. Mr. Bush shouldn't have been elected into a second term and only was because of his terror rhetoric and the STUPIDITY of many of my fellow citizens. He didn't focus on social and domestic issues which is evident right now.
ryan, Boston, United States
This little man should have his day in court, but only after he has been questioned like so many other "rendered" enemies.
A vile, pathetic, little man, allowed by americans to walk on the backs of the working class.
Trial by jury: life in prison.
Nothing less.
Mark, los Angeles, USA
History will write about George Bush... They will begin the chapter by using the words, "The End Of Freedom in America - The George W. Bush Presidency. The policies created and civil liberties removed from the American people during this period in American history would take decades to fix........"
Doug Heavener, Punta Gorda, United States
I wish I could believe that Mr. Bush was sincere. But I just can't. The man who so readily and so often invoked the image of Nazi appeasement never looked himself in the mirror and realized just how ironic his statements have been.
John D. Powers, Alpharetta, GA, United States
Impeach Bush. It's the only way we can fix our morality after 8 years of deliberate immorality. Bush represents the very depth of greed.
Jason Parise, San Diego, USA
I'm tired of snot-nosed European self-righteous bigots. May you live in "interesting times." May Europe stew in the sauce she has cooked for herself. Bush did not lie. It is a lie to say he lied. He's despised by the press because he's conservative and religious. That's bigotry.
Houghton, Chicago,
Folks should brush up on their reading comprehension. He didn't apologize for, or regret going into, Iraq. He regrets only his tone. Not that a different tone would have made any difference in how he was perceived by all the America haters out there. Their minds are/were already made up.
David, Boerne, USA
I wish Bush would just declare himself emporer and kick all the unpatriotic Libs out of the country. That way, all the Libs could say "we were right" and move to Canada, where you could get your free health care.
Gil, New York, USA
Foreigners (non US people) got the right to involve themselves in US politics as soon as US government policies started to affect them: like unilateral wars, unfair trade agreements, corrupting financial markets, occupying sovereign nations, corrupting their democracy, etc, etc, etc, etc,etc
dhome, sydney, australia
Bush gets blamed for the War. The Democrates were swept into the house in 2006 with the "promise" of getting out of Iraq. I haven't seen any action from them now that they are "in control".
Mark, Canoga Park,
I blame the liberal media. Its distortions and lies have brainwashed many. History will be kind to President Bush I have no doubt. He will always have detractors not because of what he did or didn't do but because some love to hate anything or anyone that does not agree with them and their ideaology
paul, san diego, usa
He is a disgrace, not only to our nation, but to the world. Those of you that support him are in for a very rude awakening. His grandfather financially supported the nazis. His brother bilked a savings and loan and stole the retirement of hundreds of seniors. This is someone to be proud of?
Karen Lee, sacramento, United States
Ah, poor Georgie, so misunderstood. He did not want war, really? In the days right after 9/11, GWB the VP & Sec. Rumsfeld while in Nat'l Sec. meetings called for the invasion of Iraq, before taking action in Afganistan. He had to be talked out of it. This is a well documented fact.
Mary K, New York, USA
I can't wait to see the White House door hit Bush and Cheney on the behinds. Hopefully as they're carted off to jail for war crimes. I only pray we don't bomb Iran as his final hurrah. He's a horrible man and has really damaged my country. How COULD 55 million people have been so wrong?
Melanie Black, Houston, TX
A few months to go in his term, and George is already apologizing for his many faults. Then, we've got "Bush #3," "Mr. McBush" to avoid electing. Thank you Europe and the world for putting up with our imbecile leadership. We will try to elect qualified candidates (yes, Obama) this November.
Mike, Chicago, US
His obsession with war has made his policies and leadership on immigration, energy, US$, infrastructure, environment, trade, and education all miserable failures. Verification of his failed polices show up in record lows in all types of confidence: consumer, small business, favor ability.
Dennis, Dallas,
Truman was regarded as a "disaster" when he left office,
yet the test of time has elevated him substantially.
History will be similarly kind to President Bush
Ohio lawyer, Cambridge, USA
Too many lives and a few billion dollars too late, I'm afraid.
The U.S. affects the rest of the world tremendously. So it is no wonder that people all over have such strong opinions. We are NOT the center of the universe, let's not be so ethnocentric!
Please remember only 50% of us voted for him!
Helen, Winchester, NY
Once a liar, always a liar. I agree with Vincent Bugliosi. This shmuck needs to be tried for murder.
Scott , Seville, Spain
The Iraq war was completely justifiable since Iraq had violated several unanimously passed U.N. mandates and failed to abide by the surrender agreement signed after the first gulf war. Funny how the worlds leftist fail to so freely and irately criticize those hypocritical Muslim terrorists who lie,
Joshua, Texas,
Thank you President Bush.
Chris S, Chicago, IL, USA
For the record, back in 2000, I tried to warn people not to vote for him.
Linda Coleman, Dallas, TX,
Bush was the right man at the right time. He is not perfect but he is not an appeasing left winger either. Gore and Kerry would have got more americans killed. McCain in 08.
Jay Matous, COEUR D ALENE, usa
To Great Britain: Comments like this from Reed West USA, "Bush doesn't care one bit about anybody but himself and his rich friends. The more war, the more money for him and his buddies...." are not typical of Americans. Bush is highly respected, it's our media that wants you to think otherwise.
Bob, Firestone CO, USA
Yeah, no attacks since 9/11
..and no BIN LADEN either!!!
All intelligence estimates say that Al-Qaeda is now sronger than ever, and this is mostly due to our continued presence in Iraq. You Republicans who continue to misconstrue the facts are a disgrace, and history will not forget.
Jerry, Denver, CO, United States
Every President, including Bill Clinton has taken advantage of his position as President. You do not get as far as these men do without some ambition. Perhaps the type of environment that democrats like to foster, such as tax and spend entitlements and handouts have made us all weak and soft.
Heath, Austin, USA
Its convenient to forget that more than half of the demoncratic senators in office supported the war resolution too.
The media paints ol Georgie as an island.
One day Barack too will have to be accountable for his decisions. If he can make any.... "present" isnt an option as President.
Lance, Thousand Oaks, USA
Many people have forgotten the horror of 9/11 as well as the many other attacks our country has faced from these terrorists thugs. And now some people rationalize what happened and equate our policies, with them. I'm thankful for President Bush and I still believe history will prove him right.
Mike Ward, Dallas, USA
If Bush is seeking pathos, I'll give it to him for being the biggest fool to ever grace the Oval Office. Along with Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove, Libby, Chertov, and Gonzalez, his small band of idiots dismantled years of American good will and Constitutional law into the trainwreck we have now. Poor guy.
Alan Shaw, San Francisco, California
After 9/11 the People all but mandated Bush to do all that was feasible to protect us.US & EU intel showed an Iraqi threat--faulty or not. If you blame intelligence, look no further than Clinton for the CIA-By 98 we had 2 agents & 2 flubbed Bin Laden assasinations. Why? Golf. Look it up. It's true
Megan, Tallahassee,
At this point I think Bush is incapable of uttering a truthful statement. I have a feeling that for him a truthful statement is any statement which benefits him,
Linus Bern, toronto, Canada
"History alone will tell us how to judge President Bush"? How about common sense? He's mucked up about everthing he's touched. Conservatives cling to this absurd notion that he has made the US and the world safer. He will reside in the trash bin of history - http://hnn.us/articles/48916.html.
Pedro, San Diego,
Sorry, but I am not upset with his was on Iraq so much as how he has neglected our economy. He is an oil man, so check out the gas prices. Today, I went to the gas station and the cheapest is $4.39 a gal. Is this because of the war? Maybe in part, but mostly I think it is greed.
Robin, Lake Forest, USA
Seems to me that it was a bi-partisan war based on what was known at the time. People seem to forget that fact. This is something that takes 20yrs or so to see if it was the right move. In my opinion we should only go to war when US interests are at stake.
Serbia war was probably the worst.
John, Concord, USA
Bush has been accurate.
Unfortuate that you (of all continents) cannot accept this..
So enjoy your Holiday
David, Kingsport,
This war monger should be in a Nuremberg goal used by other war criminals such as Hans Frank, Wilhelm Frick,
Julius Streicher and all the others.
His fate should be the same as that imposed on those above.
May God Bless America because the rest of the world views it as an evil hypocrisy.
Dave, Texas, USA
President Bush is an honorable man & a great Leader that has been grossly misrepresented by the media. I understand what he stood for and what he went to Washington to accomplish because he was our Texas Governor. He loves America. All you naysayers, haters, you have been lied to by the media.
Sue, Texas, USA
Too little, far too late.
Stormin Norman, Phoenix, ARIZ, USA
had the press on his back from BEFORE Day ONE. He is a good man, who tried to do what he thought was right... for no other motive or reason. He's a good man , and we've been spoon-fed to be against him. That's just plain wrong.
Jan Hanna, Hampton Bays, USA
GB regrets his legacy as man who wanted war; a little late isn't it? I was not among those who voted for him in either election. I will be glad to see this administration out of Washington.
J, Fairhaven, USA
Even if you vehemantly disagree w/ him on issues, I do not understand how one can view GWB as anything but honest and personally likable.
Zach, NYC, USA
History will vindicate him and demonstrate that his eforts were sound and his vision clear. God bless President Bush.
Leslie, Lafayette, LA
I am so very proud to be an ex-Australian and for almost 20 years an AMERICAN. I am proud of who we are, my President, and of what he has achieved to make the world a safer place for everyone. Australia is no longer the home of the brave ANZACs of your forefathers, rather an island nation of whiners
Adam, Pittsburg, USA
Sorry to disagree Jim Willis, but the Afghan war was necessary yet too quickly abandoned due to the fool's errand in Iraq. The Afghan/Pakastani tribal regions were the heart of global terrorism operations, and should have been taken care of when we had the chance, money, and global support.
Jeremy, Montana, USA
Aren't you all the same people who whined and complained about Reagan and how he was "going to start WW3" when he put missiles in Europe? Or who Cheered when Chamberlain returned from his meetings with a "Guarantee of peace" in his hand? History will look fondly upon George Bush as it has onReagan.
Scott M., Hewlett, NY, USA
God bless you, George W. Bush. History will be kind to you, fine sir.
Pete, London, GB
There's only one question and one answer to know if the war in Iraq (and on terror) was a success.
Question: How many attacks have there been on US soil since 9/11?
Answer: ZERO-case closed his policy against terrorism has been a success.
Anthony Gomez, Scottsdale, Az
History alone will tell us how to judge President Bush. If Iraq gets better and even brings improvements in the Middle East, then he will be considered a great man.
Sophie de Bellemaniere, France,
It was bad luck that 911 happened barely after Bush took office. Who knows what another president may have done. We'll never know... but we can blame Bush... can't we?
Norm Fankell, Northville, usa
Most Americans now regret that Bush was elected, or, I should say, given the job by the US Supreme Court. He was not qualified for the job. Whoever is elected in November will be a big improvement over Bush.
Ben, Birmingham, USA
History, if written truthfully, will reveal President Bush to be one of our greatest Presidents. In all he did, he put the US and her citizens first and foremost without consulting polls or his popularity - and for that he is a truly great leader.
C.D., Trenton, USA
A handful of neo- conservative criminals hijacked the US and duped the country into believing attacking Iraq was a productive idea. The only benefactors are the criminals and their defense contractor cronies. They shall be held accountable.
david, Marin, USA
This far-too-late humility is maudlin and pathetic. Has Bush attended even one soldier's funeral? The coffins are flown in under the cover of darkness.
Dan Bernard, Portland, USA
I hope they impeach him before he leaves office, and charge him with 4000 counts of murder for our troops. Those who voted for him should vote democrat just to try and make up for the damage they helped to facilitate over the past eight years. (How does that beer taste now!)
angelo johnson, Charlotte, u.s.a.
this is a total disgrace.after causing the death of 4000+ americans,100+ brits and more than 400000 unaccounted poor iraqis civilians ,you recognise after all that you are human.sorry but it's not good enough.why do i have to face death penalty by stealing an 'egg' and you getting away with murder..
ahmadou ba, brighton, england
When the historical dust settles what we will be left with is...
1. No attacks on America post 9-11.
2. A democratic, peaceful nation in the M.E.- first time in world history
3. All nations determined to have thought Iraq was a threat and equally wrong.
4. Iran without nukes-
Thanks GW!
John C, Virginia Beach, VA USA
I'm still trying to figure out what "unilateral" means. I always thought it meant "going it alone", but apparently it means "going it alone with the British, the Australians, the Spanish, the Poles........."
Eric, Park City, USA
any pro Bush loyalists are obviously blind and motivated by bias. The record of the Bush era (Valerie Plame, Alberto Gonzalez, Scooter Libby, Katrina, the economy, Iraq, Walter Reed, lowest approval ratings ever etc etc) is just one scandalous failure after another. Good riddance - impeach them now
Ben, Jersey City, USA
He is the best thing that ever happened to the American plutocracy. His administration will be remembered as the time that two divergent societies started to evolve in America and the belief that a person could get ahead with lots of hard work began to fade.
This , not the wars, will be his legacy
Mark, Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, USA
Bush doesn't care one bit about anybody but himself and his rich friends. The more war, the more money for him and his buddies. He and his 23% of followers are pathetic morons.
Reed West, Newberg, USA
Yeah, I think Hitler hated being called a genocidal maniac, too.
I guess he should have thought about that BEFORE he lied the country into a war that would murder a million innocent people.
Thomas Mc, Colorado Springs, USA
I am proud to say he is my president. He worked hard to protect us from the face of terror. He did lose control of the political spending. I will always think of him as an honest , honorable man who brought back some kind of dignity to the white house..
Cindy Hill, Boca Raton, us
Nobody is pro-war: you'd be all under Germany, if not for USA.
And now Europe and Canada soon become under Sharia law...
I guess you all admire your favorite US President, Jimmy Carter, who created Iranian mess in the first place - and he never said sorry for that, and for ruining US economy too
Larry, Sunnyvale, USA
The problem Mr Bush is that the world understands very well what he has done and how he has done it. Trying to rewrite or reframe history is difficult especially since all his statements are in the public record. He has been incompetent at best.
Can't wait till January to see him go.
Lou, Chicago, USA
The problem with the United States is that it elected two Texas oil hustlers to the presidency and vice presidency. In American parlance, "oil field trash" refers to the brutish culture of transient oil field roustabouts, qualities exemplified by Mssrs. Bush and Cheney.
-G. Flynn, Georgetown TX
George Flynn, George, TX
k.mills' freudian slip says it best: ''Mr. Bush has already forgotten more wisdom and knowledge than you will EVER have in your possession'' Forget he did and ignore more wisdom than anyone may passess he also did....
Geraldine, Oxford,
Let's look at the options back in late 2002 and early 2003. All intelligent reports from every country were saying the same thing. Pres Bush had to choose to protect the world at all costs. He did the right thing, unlike most, he stood his ground, stood firm, "W"... ALWAYS my President.
Chris M, Washington DC, USA
You are very sellective in what you print on your board...I wonder why...???
Could it be that the truth HURTS??????
David, Kingsport,
I love you President Bush. You are our last hero. Your only mistake is that you believe in the human spirit. I fully agree with your reasons for going into Iraq. Someday we will know how important it was to fight the enemy in their territory instead of ours.
NO ATTACKS. Since 911. Amazing.
Lucy Wheeler, Mt. Airy Maryland,
He is a great President. History will show that.
Amos, keene, United States
Far too little...Far, far too late
Fred Gerber, Calabasas, USA
Let's look on the bright side: it SHOULD be harder for the American public 2b lied 2, all sorts of new media and blogs have risen up powerfully, and even this small gesture of regret leaves the party and this presidency weakened and smaller. And let's face it--nice 2c his human side for once.
Joel, New York City, USA
Thanks for the article about Pres. Bush. He gave some well-thought out answers, and appeared intelligent and focused. If he weren't a conservative, he'd be called brilliant.
Cynthia, Seattle, USA
He will remain a puppet to the end and be forgotten in a moment, the same as his good friend. What a massive waste of opportunity by both of our Countries. Like Tony he travels a world to say goodbye to those who wish he'd never entered their lives, by that I mean the common person.
E.Howley, stevenage, herts
Regrets? I regret Bush not defending the 2 border patrol agents Ramos and Compean sentenced to 11 yrs in prison for shooting a drug dealer/ illegal alien. Sad it is to not have the Commander in Chief backing up the border patrol!
Tom, Anaheim, USA
I had to double check my calendar to make sure that it did not say 1 April...are you kidding me? A war that costs upwards of $1.8 billion/week (that's with a B) and this is what he says....you must be joking Bush...
Frank D, Sydney, Australia
Will people get off Bush's back already? We have had MUCH worse Presidents in the past -- read the history books to find some of them. As my Mom told me, "People will be blaming Bush for bad things that happen 50 years from now." It's the easy and fashionable thing to do.
Tara, Shelby, USA
Well, I for one am quite proud of the stand our President has taken. I only wish he had clearly communicated that it is radicalized Islam that is the enemy and the absolute necessity of Western civilization to defeat it at every crossroads.
This World War will be a long one.
Mike Scholtens, Gig Harbor, USA
I for one will miss terribly President Bush and his courage and steadfastness. I was a little timid about you when you were first elected but over these past years have grown to admire you greatly as will many others will do as time goes by. Thank you for keeping us safe for nearly 8 years.
Patricia Gardiner, Los Angeles, USA
Funny, American liberals and Brits kept their mouths shut when Bill Clinton and Tony Blair bombed Iraq for having WMD in Operation Desert Fox back in December 1998.
Now, the fake outrage about being lied to is disingenuous.
Thomas Galvin, New York, NY, USA
It is a real shame the left wing politicians and their media lapdogs were so successful in their demagoguery of President Bush and the war in Iraq. What an inconvenience it must be to them the war resolution passed with Democratic support - citing the same evidence of WMD's they now spurn.
Kornel Balon, Chicago, United States
This is the most dispicable little man!
Did the interviewers manage not to laugh?
nancy, washington, usa
Wow. And you people represent the "talk to our enemies as well as our friends" crowd? This is how you talk about someone who is merely has political differences with you? Hate and vitriol and insults? I am supposed to place my life in your ability to negotiate with our enemies? Scary.
Doug Conners, Chicago, IL, USA
Bush is the most villified president in US history. If Iraq turns into a viable and stable ally, the history books will be quite kind to this president.
As for oil and the economy, all that can save his reputation is if the US population learns and understands economics... which wont happen.
Bryan, Los Angeles, USA
"I also have an obligation to make sure that those lives were not lost in vain."
A most dishonorable lie, as he feigns sincerity to both justify and perpetuate the war, adding more to the body count and the bank accounts.
Dan Reznick, San Diego, USA
President Bush has done a great job with leading the U.S.A. during his 7+ years in office. It's the Liberal out there that have made everything so radical. What would Clinton, Obama, Polois, Reid, Kennedy, Kerry, and all the rest of the Liberal Dem have done if they had been the President on 9/11?
Shirley, Corvallis, U.S.A.
Buddy Singh, Henderson, NV - USA
A lot goes to show the intelligence of the US Electorate - cannot be excused. They voted this man to power twice knowing fully well that he lied and misrepresented facts to the American People and the World. How many people can we forgive for this lie???
Buddy, Henderson, USA
If this exchange with Bush doesn't show a man out of touch I don't know what does.
frank, wilmington,nc, united states
I agree with President Bush. It would be not accurate to remember him as a president who wanted war. He should be remembered as a president who wanted to surrender the U.S. to the invasion of Mexican "migrants" and didn't want to enforce the American-Mexican border.
A Reader, California, USA
I support President George Bush and I support former Prime Minister Tony Blair. I am not a leftist sheep that go with whatever the "Cool" crowd says, like how its "cool" to support tyrants such as N. Korea, Iran, Syria and the like. Leftists are the real fascists.
JohnD, Los Angeles, , USA
The war in Afghanistan WAS necessary. Even Sean Penn admits that for christ sake. You expected the United States to do nothing after a terrorist attack killed 3,000 of its citicizens? Iraq, yes we agree, not necessary, should have never happened.
Matt, Boston, USA
History is going to be very unkind to Mr. Bush. Like previous presidential disasters (Buchanan, Harding), he simply was in over his head. There is nothing he can say now to change that. His legacy was cemented by decisions made in 2001-2003.
Randall, Kansas City, USA
Boy, I can't tell you how much we Americans can't wait for this man to leave office. He will forever be a huge stain on America. He does not represent America in any way shape or form. How sad, he is sorry for letting his "texas" speak come out, but how sorry is he for the ruined reputation?
Alex, Los Angeles, USA
It is very easy for most of you on this blog to play Monday Morning Quarterback--did this man make major errors? Absolutely--do you really that our congress now and what we have to choose from in November is going to be ANY better--in all my years I have never been so pessimistic about the future.
Cindy C, Bergenfield,
A blogger wrote on the difference between animals and humans. One example was anyone who knows his neighbors are torturing; abusing; or otherwise seriously harming their children and he does nothing about it, is an animal, not a human. Hussein was killing children, End of debate on war in Iraq.
irlandes, Puebla, Mexico
You cowardly Liberals were weak when you embraced the Soviets in the 80s, and you're weak now when you face the Islamist radicals. Ronald Reagan destroyed Soviet Communism in the 80s, and George W. Bush is doing similarly to the contemporary Islamist tyrants. Will you ever learn?
Bill, Virginia, USA
Misunderstood?! Bush IS a man that is anxious for war. He said, repeatedly, that "only war presidents get to be great presidents". He deliberately ignored any intelligence that went against his desire for war with Iraq. He wanted war from his first day in office, and took any excuse to get it.
Tim, Miami, FL, USA
I disagree with my friend from down under. Afghanistan was the right thing to do, they were the ones who attacked America. I do agree, Iraq was a HUGE mistake, and never should have happened. The country is going to be paying for that for a long, time. Also, Correct, he is no conservative.
Tim Bush, Arlington, TX, USA
Dear Barry, Mr. Bush has already forgotten more wisdom and knowledge than you will EVER have in your possession...it's so easy to set in the wings and do the Monday morning quarterbacking...but, he has been faced with some extreme challenges that had to be dealt by someone w/stron charater.
k mills, Austin, USA
I will still wait for history to be the judge. Don't forget how hated President Truman was and now he is considered one of America's very best Presidents. The public is fickled and bloggers don't have any more ability to judge. You folk would have torn President Truman apart.
Cyn, Virginia, USA
I guess our grandchildren will be misunderstanding while making minimum payments on the national debt
A half million Iraqi dead, millions displaced have misunderstood as well
I must be misunderstanding the reason we went from having the world pour sympathy to us, to being despised around the globe
M. York, Richmond, va
Bush was MADE to be misunderstood by a liberal media that never liked him from day one because he was a conservative and had 'religious right' support.
He didn't turn other countries against us, our own media did that. Foreign countries get their sources of information from our own American media.
Vince Hugh, Atlanta, USA
It always amazes me that people from outside the US are such experts on American Policy.
Don't worry soon the Messiah will be President and all the worlds woes will vanish....overnight
Duncan you must be thrilled with this;
B.C. aboriginal leaders say Prime Minister Stephen Harper's apology tomorrow to residential-school survivors is too little, too late.
Mike, Los Angeles, USA
I hope in ten years when Europe is overrun with Islamofacism and sharia law the United States tells them to deal with their own problems. President Bush will be in Crawford knowing atleast he tried to do something. The League of Nations did nothing......the UN wanted to do nothing.
David, Johnstown, NY, USA
As usual. Lies, lies, nothing but lies.
kevin masterson, Los Angeles, usa
I find the most worrying statements in this article coming from the Israeli minister!
It shows just what a dangerous beast America has created in the middle east and with the USA's internationally lamentable example of unilateralism, who knows what further mahem Israel can inflict on the world.
Dale, Australia,
History will tell when Iraq once again becomes the cradle of civilization rather than home of a despot. As Sir Edmond Burke said: Your representative owes you, not his industry only, but his judgment; and he betrays, instead of serving you, if he sacrifices it to your opinion.
Arthur Machado, Windsor, CT, USA
It will be interesting to see how history ultimately views the past eight years. Historically speaking the conflict in Iraq isn't very large. It was a huge story worldwide. If Iraq goes on to be a somewhat stable state like Saudi Arabia or Jordan all of the partisan rhetoric will fade.
Michael, Sarasota, US
Yes, we voted for him twice. Not me, my family, friends, or peers. Just roughly 50% of America out in middle america and the american south. It's embarrassing.
s, Santa Monica, USA
There are many things that Mr. Bush has done that I dont totally agree with. They are mostly domestic policy. All in all, I believe he has done a good job. This is my country, I will never take the liberal stance that the USA can do no good. When it hits the fan, you damn sure will want us around.
J. Jones, Indpls. , USA
His legacy will be pretty good actually.
Aaron, Utah, USA
I think everyone who is not from America should take Clint Eastwoods advice to Spike Lee and "shut their face". Good or bad our president is OUR president. We will deal with our own issues and you deal with yours.
scott, murrieta, USA
As a life-long Republican, and a Vietnam-era Marine, George Bush embarasses me. He's not "misunderstood", just a guy with a room temperature IQ and great political connections. The only comfort I find in the coming election is that neither of the probable candidates could possibly do worse.
Bob, stockton, USA
Bush is surpised the rest of the world doesn't see him a "man of peace".Does even he believe this nonsence? We all know now he wanted war, he got war, and now he is leaving and like most "little rich boys" some one else will will pay for his war, in both blood and money. And he wants to advise Obama!
Liz, New Orleans, USA
Why did terrorists kill 3,000 U.S. citizens on September 11?
Answer: Because they did not know how to kill 30,000 or 300,000 or even 3,000,000 Americans.
The U.S. ownes the watch, but the terrorists have the time. Terrorists won't defeat the U.S, our own people will.
Alan, Dallas, USA
"A different rhetoric???" This guys got a set on him. Tell that to the 4000+ families of the American soldiers who died in a needless war.
Rob, Boston, USA
Bush and The US were right to go into both Afganistan and Iraq. Those countries and their people at least have a chance, paid for in US and coalition blood, to live in freedom. Maybe all you whiners think it is fine for half the world (females) to live in virtual slavery. How selfish.
Dave Smith, Olympia, USA
We need to hold impeachment proceedings to insure that this failed President is held accountable for what he did. His faux apologies not withstanding, he lied us into a war. The war is still going on, and so is his lying about it. Get him in public, under oath.
Ed Botsko, Delray Beach, usa
My only prayer, in regards to whoever the next president may be, is that he doesn't try to turn the U.S. into just another little socialist European country; long on rhetoric and pontification, and little else.
Don, Burdett, USA
You guys all have it wrong. I think you all forget that the UN had sanctions on Iraq, and that Hussein flaunted 12 UN resolutions. He attacked Kuwait in 1991, tried to have Bush Sr. assassinated, etc. The US HAD to go it alone because France, Germany, AND Russia had BACK ROOM DEALS with SADDAM.
David, USA,
He knew exactly what he was saying and what effect it would have on the american public. He intended to scare people into supporting that war. He now realizes that the history books are going to refer to him as a war monger and that is his only regret.
Jeannie V, Seattle, USA
You are, all of you, fools. I never saw a more stupid group of comments. Speak of 4,000 dead as if a war does not should not could not have dead? Have you forgotten why we are at war? Do any of you even know? The Bush Doctrine will be continued by EVERY President that follows W -!
Ron Campbell, Anthem, Arizona
Thank you Mr. President for being in the White House when the United States of America was attacked. History will show that you provided strength and resolve when our country needed it most. They attacked a country they thought had grown weak... they were wrong. "Bring it on!"
George Markos, DeBary, United States of America
you guys don't get it!
Remember, the leaked details of the US-Iraq agreement was leaked RIGHT HERE at Times Online a few days ago!
Now he gives this exclusive mea-cupla interview to Times Online, - not a single mention or denial of those details!
It's damage control! Get it?
Markus Baker, San Francisco, United States
Bush led a criminal enterprise that tortured people, abducted citizens of other countries, spied on the citizens of his own country and operated in violation of many laws and international agreements. President Obama should prosecute this thug and his henchmen. Who cares what Bush has to say now?
Rick Wilson, Little Compton, USA
His remorse is too litle too late. This evil man has already made his print in American history and it certainly is not something to be proud of.
End of story. Well, counting the days, that is....
Winston, Phoenix, USA
Taking the war to the terrorists has been a God-send to the world. International terrorism is down. The only problem is that he has not seen fit to topple Iran and Syria.
We're proud our family served in Iraq! We're also happy to ignore the nay-sayers.
Carl Parsons, Indianapolis, USA
Would you people immigrate to the United States of America if you could?
Who IS your president this week? Let us know, so we can jump on the bandwagon of whoever's criticizing her/him.
Australia--the release of a NIE study this week indicates each of your statements is false.
Ann, Minnesota,
The man did the best he could with the information available.
I always find it funny how liberals have selective amnesia, every prominent leader in the Democratic party (Clinton, Gore, Kerry, Kendey, Pelosi, etc) all said for over a decade that Iraq had or was close to nuclear capabiliti
Greg Jones, Pembroke, MA, United States of America
Lets be clear; everyone thought Iraq had WMD's including Iraq's generals who were waiting for Saddam to give the order to use them against the British and Americans. Just read the documents that were uncovered in Iraq.
We all know that Iraq had WMD because they used them against Iran in their war.
DBTimes, Detroit, USA
I don't want to be angry at Bush, Cheney, Rove, etc. I didn't vote for them, don't agree with their tactics, and am saddened at what the US has become under their leadership. Power is a drug and the world seems to be run by addicts. Like any other substance abuser, I think they merit pity not anger.
Knute, Los Angeles,
The USA has a history of bailing out Europe....reading these comments I now know why.
Phil Heil, , USA
We know this man! Beware of him! His seeking of sympathy at this stage is akin to crying wolf. Never, never trust him or his word -- EVEN NOW. He's still got something up his sleeve. Again, BEWARE!
Jim, Sacramento, USA
Its not only what he says it's what he does.
He says"no child left behind" then leaves them all behind.
he says "i am making you safer" and he makes all of our lives more dangerous
he says " i don't want war" and starts war after war after war.
he is disturbed and unfit for any duty.
sandra, oakland,
Bush was unqualified for the job and completely manipulated by Cheney and the neocons to invade Iraq; our political system is rigged beyond imagination and the people of this country immobilized and preoccupied in just making a living
david, Louisville, KY, USA
I don't agree with any of the wars, but as everyone should know, Mr Bush did what "he" thought was right after having "advisers" tell him of the situation. However, Saddam should have been dealt with after the first gulf war, excuses for the second gulf war was just ridiculous.
Joseph Gibson, Stevenston, UK
I don't agree that the two wars were a mistake or based upon lies but Bush'es 'triumphalism' in 2002-2003 was difficult to swallow.
His strut was uncalled for and his inability to communicate
effectively was costly. Churchill said " In victory magnanimity
in defeat defiance"...Bush had it reversed!
Paarl, Morristown NJ, USA
Much of the world is too politically inept to understand Bush's rhetoric and the reasons for it... the posturing necessary to shift political lines. Bush offered a position of strength for the entire western world facing a wealthy and radical islam. To bad we were too stupid to follow his lead.
Mike Powers, Manchester, UK
He wasn't misunderstood. He made a mess of the whole thing with his gong-ho style and now he is trying to say he is a man of peace-absolute rubbish
Zameel Haque, Haverfordwest, UK
The wars never should have happened? The Taliban was a brutal regime that supported and hid Osama and his ilk. These cretons had been attacking the US for years upon years. Saying that war should not have been fought is naive and revisionist.
Ryan, New Jersey, USA
We,the collective World, does not misunderstand America,it's Bush, who misunderstood his own country,he still believes he is right and just...his own legacy will boil down to basic delusion and self-importance,how pathetic...
barry, halifax, canada
Well said Jim of Brisbane - but dont forget to add Mr Howard and Mr Blair to the role call of shame.
patrick, The Hague, netherlands
He didn't say that Marty, he didn't apologize for going into Iraq, only for some of his Texan' coming out. The opportunistic democrat party Congress and senators could say, "Whoops, sorry our bad, we saw that it was the politically expedient thing to do and voted for it.....TWICE!"
Aaron, Kailua, USA
well ! what does he want now forbidence ? ... good ridance yes Mr Bush
Adam Carson, London,
President Bush is NOT misunderstood. He has 'misrepresented' much about his politics (he is no conservative), his business acumen - his government lies about unemployment numbers, inflation numbers, money supply numbers, and so on, and on If he had class or conscience he would become invisible.
David C LeMeur, Huntersville, North Carolina, United States
Sorry Marty from Seattle...your President will never say "Sorry." He is apparently incapable of ever admitting, publicly, that he's erred. He is a man, I would argue, without the ability to express remorse.
Duncan MacKenzie, Orillia, Canada
Iraq was the quickest payback for 911 that Bush could find. The Iraq WMD intel is known to have been very weak. Rumsfeld thought he could win the war AND the peace with 400,000 less soldiers than the top general at the time. Bush was totally deliberate throughout. This is spin for McCain.
Xavier, London, England
Now he tells us. To the 4,000+ who died: "Whoops! Sorry! My bad!"
marty Jourard, seattle, usa
President Bush is not misunderstood. The Iraq and Afghanistan wars should never have happened. The world now realises the misinformation that his administration passed to the media, inorder to brain wash the minds of Americans and Britain, was inaccurate and meant to mislead.
Jim Wills, Brisbane, Australia
