Florida An amateur photographer captured by chance an image of a 6ft blacktip “spinner” shark leaping from the waves as he took pictures of fellow surfers.
Kem McNair, who had finished surfing at New Smyrna Beach, Florida, before taking three images of the shark, shot in under a second, said: “I saw something in the background and I thought, 'What was that?'. I looked back at the display on my camera and there it was — a spinner shark.”
Blacktip sharks, known as spinners because of their habit of leaping out of the water, are common in the shallow coastal waters and estuaries of Florida. The majority of shark bites in the state are blamed on the species and New Smyrna beach is notorious for attacks, this year the toll has already reached twelve.
"We see them all the time," says McNair of the 6ft specimen he captured on film, " if you ride a wave and the water is clear you may see two or three sharks in the length of one ride… But not everyone has a photo of the event this this, that's for sure."

I catch these all the time off the coast of Florida. They do jump just like in the picture. These sharks average 5-6 feet and swim in schools. The picture is 100% accurate and real.
Jerry, Orlando, Fl, USA
Its real ive surfed there like 100 times and ive seen like 50 of the sharks and ive seen four jump like that, well not that high, but still its real.
Dylan, Titusville, USA
Totally real!
When I first saw this on the news,I thought it was hilarious!(since no-one got hurt), it looked like the shark was competing with the surfer! I laughed!

Ahh... ...get in a plane, fly over New Smyrna beach inlet:; and see the sharks swimming all around. New Smyrna Beach is in the direct path of the worlds largest shark migration that takes place every year. Research, research, research.
Dawn, New Smyrna Beach, USA
This indeed is a Blacktip shark, Carcharias limbatus, not a Spinner shark, Carcharias brevipinna. Both are known to jump out of the water while hunting fish. The Spinner shark has a black tip on the anal fin where as the Blacktip doesn't, which can clearly be seen in the pic.
Josh, Southern MD,
CNN ran the pic last night, and several witness said that they saw the shark (sharks) jumping out of the water here just behind the lineup (area where the surfers sit while waiting for waves). I have actually seen makos do this as well.
Harrison, VA Bch, USA
These days anything can be doctered... live video would be much better.
Neal , Virginia, USA
I believe you all the way. My mom says that she used to swim there and she said she saw sharks all the time jumping.
Tommy C., chester,VA, USA
I fish at that jetty in New Smyrna Beach every so often for the last 25 years.
<br/>That picture is no fake. Take it from an avid fisherman from Orlando FL.

Quite right, jce. Sharks don't exist. And if they did exist, they would never be seen around humans. And if they were seen around humans, they would never be photographed. And "shark bites"? All photoshopped.
:)

Just to let all of you disbeleivers know, the photos are real! I have lived in New Smyrna all my life and have seen thousands of sharks jump out of the water. Kem is my friend and would never try to change or manipulate a photo. These images are 100% original and real..... Patrick Eichstaedt
