For the first time ever, a videotaped interrogation of a terror suspect at Guantanamo Bay has been released to the public.
The video shows Omar Khadr, captured in Afghanistan at the age of 15 and held in extra-judicial detention at Guantanamo for more than five years, weeping with his face buried in his hands as he is questioned by a Canadian intelligence officer.
Mr Khadr, a Canadian, is the only Western citizen left in the US detention camp on Cuba and was the youngest prisoner there. He was detained after a firefight in Afghanistan and accused of throwing a grenade that killed a US soldier.
The 10-minute excerpt, released by his lawyers, is part of a seven-hour video taken over four days of interviews in late 2003, when Mr Khadr was 16, which was originally marked “Secret/No Foreign".
At one point, Mr Khadr tells this questioner that he was tortured while at the US military detention centre at the Bagram air base in Afghanistan, where he was first detained after his arrest in 2002. He raises his orange shirt to show the wounds he sustained.
Breaking into sobs, he tells the agent: “You don’t care about me.”
The video provides insight into the effects of prolonged interrogation and detention on the Guantanamo prisoner. At one point, Mr Khadr cries, "I lost my eyes. I lost my feet. Everything!" in reference to how the firefight in Afghanistan affected his vision.
"No, you still have your eyes and your feet are still at the end of your legs, you know," his interrogator replies.
As Mr Khadr continues crying, the agent calls for a break. Then the teenager is heard sobbing and chanting over and over again, "Help me."
Mr Khadr is from a family of Pakistani origin noted for its close ties to al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden.
His father, Ahmed Saeed Khadr, who was killed in 2003, ran orphanages in Afghanistan during the war against the Soviet occupation, during which he developed close links with Bin Laden and other Mujahidin leaders. Canada considered him to be the country's most senior al-Qaeda member and a financier of terror.
Despite appeals from groups including Amnesty International and Unicef, the Canadian Government has already refused to seek extradition or repatriation for Mr Khadr, who is now 21.

the U S authorities have admitted that this 16 year old boy was subjected to sleep deprivation for 21 days prior to this - under any definition of international law, sleep deprivation is torture. in the video he is clearly distressed and nothing is done. land of the free and home of the brave.
Harry Robb, edinburgh, scotland
clearly this young man was caught on a battle field without a uniform on.
However, to detain him indefinately whilst being constantly interrogated is un acceptable.
If the americans do not have the legal processes insitu to try him they must draft legislation to end this anomoly.
paul gilboy, newcastle, england
No one has the right, under any circumstances, to initiate force against another human being, or to advocate or delegate its initiation.
One is absolutely sickened, not by the crimes that the wicked have committed, but by the punishments that the good have inflicted; and a community is infinitely more brutalized by the habitual employment of punishment than it is by the occasional occurrence of crime
Reggae Strong, rotorua, New Zealand
The parents of whom ever this "child" killed will be weeping long after Guantanamo is just a memory to him.
Ron, Dallas, US
The Man honestly has no feet nor eyes find the real video, you'll see. Don't believe the news do more research, this will be popping up a whole lot more all over. What I don't like is when Al-Qaeda gets it and then it's just a downward spiral, as wars always are.
William Wilso, Cleveland, USA
15 years of age, this is absolutely disgusting!! Just think how would you feel if this was your 15 year old son, nephew, grandson, friend etc. A child is a child, the fact that a 15 year old has been exposed to torture in a cell so notorious as Guantanamo is disturbing and disgusting.
Mira, Sydney, Australia
If this young man is guilty of killing a US soldier while in battle, he should be detained. Why would anyone travel to a country embroiled in war without being in uniform? If all the reports are true he was there as a combatant, and should be regarded as such. NO sympathy, NO remorse.
Jake, Toronto, Canada
I think its highly ironic that the western world is critical of many developing countries on their human rights records. I would have to say the US would have to top the list when it comes to torturing individuals, when looking at Guantanamo Bay.
Mira, Sydney, Australia
He's crying, so what! The interrogation seems mild to the point of being useless. What does this prove?
Nick, St. Albans, UK
Sorry folks but i can't see anywhere in the video of him being tortured. Not saying it did not happen but you are all bleating about him being treated unfairly .The video does not support that. you all crying coz he has been at Gitmo for five years. How many lives have been saved coz he is detained
Jennifer, Baumholder, Germany
Someone from Russia calls us an animal, someone from Germany agrees, someone from Argentina "shames" us, and someone from France calls us "pretenders" in support of human rights. All from nations that are paragons of civil rights and liberties. Talk about the kettle calling the pot black.
kermit, Wisconsin,
Mathew from London,
Actually we can't try them under US civil law because none of our laws apply to them--they were captured in a foreign country, hence aren't under our civil jurisdiction. If we'd let the Afghans keep them, they would have all been shot. Would you rather have that, Matt?
Ian, Washington, D.C., USA
War is hell. Omar Khadr is finding this out the hard way.
Lesson learned.
Stay away from releigious fundamentalists (Of any faith) and just be a normal teenager.
It's a hard world in the post 9/11 era.
I looked at this tape. I'm still wondering what all the outrage is about.
Eric, Sydney, Australia
For those of you in the UK who feel sorry for this innocent "child",
take heart. In another 20 years, your country, government, and culture, will be dominated by these peace loving disciples.
John Jackman, San Diego, USA
Why is it illegal to NOT fight for america. I mean, if a war breaks out, don't we as individuals have the right to choose what side we represent? I missed the meeting where we all agreed that when a war breaks out it is a crime to not be on America's side. Can I still vote on that one?
Neale, Lane Cove,
Torture? Why does this story does not report that guy was also videotaped making bombs? Would that make the story too complicated for the halfwitted anti-Americans who tend to predominate in these comments? Do your homework: we know a lot about this kid and his background. He's getting off lightly.
Nick, Rotherham, UK
Chief Nuremberg American prosecuter Robert H Jackson stated: "To initiate a war of agression, therfore, is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole". WMD's?????
Dan, Portsmouth, UK
When people see this video, they must be so proud of western civilisation. One can truly see how wonderful Uncle Sam is compared to that bad man Osama.
America - land of freedom and democracy - dontcha just love it.
Bilal Patel, London, UK
Thankfully there are people in the world that can see past the media hype an legal PR This "kid" was 15 and up to his eyeballs in al-Qaeda activity. He was, as was his father, family and friends all trying their hardest to kill and murder. His questioning and detention are completly justified.
Matt Trickett, Salisbury, UK
I watched this so called inhuman interview of this young terrorist. He was prepared to kill for his belief, but please do not expect law abding people to lose sleep over the questioning of him just because he cried crocodile tears.
He was not threatened nor was he even shouted at the time.
KeithW, Wirral, UK
When will people wake up and realise America is the biggest terrorist organisation in the world. Illegal wars, murdering innocent people, even shooting British news reports in the head, zero human rights, shooting at the British air force, allies with Pakistan! Freedom and equality, what a joke.
Vanessa, Grantham, England
How can we resolve the worlds problems when our own views differ so heavily.
rob mathieson, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK
William: Doing the time would surely involve being convicted of some offence rather than being held without trial and being tortured indefinately. Don't you think?
Matt, London,
Maybe this poor guy was on holiday like the Tipton guys.
Phill, The Wirral, England
Hey Ian, maybe your freedom-loving govt shouldn't have illegally kidnapped them and held them on your land. Not being able to find anyone to take them was obviously going to be an issue from the start.
You could always try them in a US Court of Law under the same laws you apply to yourselves.
Matthew, London, UK
Agree
The US keeps on thinking it's above its own laws and international treaties. Held without charge, without trial. Denied access to both civil and military courts. Abandoned by his own country -- and this all at the age of fifteen. Child soldiers need help, not further brutalisation. Shame!
Antonio da Silva, Rosario, argentina
Omar Khadr was in Afghanistan and Pakistan along with the rest of his family. All the male members of his family fought against the Americans, Brits and Canadian Soldiers.
There is film of him making IED's. He is lucky to be alive.
Leave him there. He is not as innocent as the tape suggests.
Curtis, Calgary, Canada
Even nazis that were responsible for killing millions of people were treated better than this 16 year old boy. How is it possible that our moral standards have changed so radically?
John, NY, USA
The biggest US mistake was keeping them at Guantanamo ... because it's technically US territory. They should have been kept in a secret prison on foreign soil ... where they could be relentlessly questioned without judicial and journalistic interference.
Bob, Beaverton, OR, US
I have no sympathy for Omar Khadr or any other member of Al Qaeda or the Taliban. He's a terrorist, plain and simple. The Taliban's track record on human rights makes Gitmo look like Disneyland. Last I saw the US hadn't executed any women for adultery or having their faces uncovered.
Paul, Ottawa, Canada
This kid would just as soon slit your throat than thank you for being a softy. Any body who wants this kid released should offer to put him up at their own place.
Also Al Qaeda and the Taliban train their followers to allege torture when captured because they know soft Westerners will fall for it.
Felix, Chicago, USA
The purpose of the war in Iraq? America will say it's to provide Freedom and Democracy to the region.
Guantanamo is just an example of how America doesn't practice what they preach.
Ryan, Canada, Canada
The US keeps on thinking it's above its own laws and international treaties. Held without charge, without trial. Denied access to both civil and military courts. Abandoned by his own country -- and this all at the age of fifteen. Child soldiers need help, not further brutalisation. Shame on you.
Cath, London, UK
One young man in tears - you would see the same in police cells on a Saturday night after a knife fight in London. Criticise the US for the period of detention but the treatment and access to legal representation are better than on offer in 99% of the rest of the world.
This isn't a game.
mark, Berkhamsted,
I'm not too sympathetic to this kid. Notice to anyone criticizing Guantanamo: If your country will offer to give asylum to 400 nut-case jihadists in legal limbo, we will gladly close the facility and ship them to you. What, no takers?
Ian, Washington, D.C., USA
Doug,
Is this possible?:
3) He was willfully in the wrong place at the wrong time, but didn't do it. Based on what I've seen, the level of mistakes is such that who can say if the kid performed a lethal action or was a water boy? You'll never know.
BobCov, Los Angeles,
The comment about the US being "animal" is ironic? Without any doubt it's absolutely inhumane to treat a 16-year-old like this, isn't it? And of course a 15-year-old is never a combatant under international law - he's is just child-soldier and a victim itself! So let him go for gods sake!
Christian Woldmann, Hamburg, Germany
It is disgarcefull that the americans are still using 9/11 as an excuse to murder , conquer and do as the please all over the world. The memory of the ones that died that day have been destroyed with what america has done since that fatefull day. All americans should be ashamed.
Evanthis Ioannou, Johannesburg, South Africa
Is he a boy? or man enough to kill?
these people have to understand that its not a game. If you comit treason then you should expect severe and dire consequences.
Barry, woking, uk
Oh so China has bad human Rights record and USA has perfect record, Absolutely disagraceful. If another country had Guantanamo camp they would have been slaughtered. USA & UK complain about Mugabe torturing people and having blood on their hands well I dont see any different between Mugabe, USA & UK
NMC, Sheffield, UK
did you really see this video ! it is really moving to see a teenager crying and asking for help !
it is really a shame !! this boy is 16 for god sake !! he should not be in prison let alone in Guantanamo ! And the us and canada pretend to be a land for human rights !!
Shame on this Bush presidency
sophie, paris, france
We let our 16 year old murderous go to trial and spend time in prison. Not in torture houses and repeatedly interrogated for information that might not be relevant anyone. Give him a fair trail and determine his faith, but I do not believe we should imprison him forever. That is justice in US.
Naleen Lal, Northern California,
His cries now are of sorrow and pity when his cries before were for murder and anarchy.
This boy was caught throwing grenades that killed a US solider. His time in court will come and he will be jailed for a few more years and then needs some serious psychological help. Sadly, help wont come.
Marko, Palm Harbor, United States
Illegal war, illegal detention camp, he should have been brought home to Canada, he was a teenager when it happen, so he can also be considered as a child soldier. And he allegedly threw the grenade that killed the american, no proof that he did, so he should be tried in Canada and NOT in the US.
Jean, Canada, Canada
What was he doing there in the first place? Obviously not sight seeing in the middle of a fire fight thats for sure.
I wish everyone would stop being so soft on these brainwashed killers. They have killed countless numbers of coalition soldiers now and should be held reguardless of age!
Paul Glazebrook, Harlow, UK
The boy should not have been in Afganistan. This is war. In war something Canadians know nothing about minus a few lower class Canadians. Sorry about the pain this young man endured, but again he should have never been in Afganistan. He should be turned over to Afgan government.
Archie Haase, Lubec Maine , USA
It's a terrible shame when a Canadian lad innocently wanted to take his vacation in the middle of a foreign war zone and practice throwing a few grenades. He must have saved up for ages and it must have been difficult finding his way to the front all by himself. What a terrible injustice!
J Briggs, Huddersfield, UK
I'm sorry, but how much relevant information can this kid still know after 5 years? Anything that he might know is probably completely useless now to our intelligence. So what does that leave, us just taking vengeance on this guy for attacking us? Give him his trial and jail him for life if guilty.
Bob, West Lafayette, USA
I don't agree with Guanatmino but why don't all the anti Americans on here ask why are westeners commiting treason to go and fight for extremists against their country's own ally?
Luke Nicolaides, London, UK
If this teenager was throwing bombs at Canadians, Malaysians, or Australians, would you be upset? Or is it simply that this boy was caught out of uniform fighting American forces that makes him "innocent?" The rules for fighting out of uniform have been clear since the 1800s. He's lucky he's in jail
Gregory Baker, Odenton, Maryland, USA
If the attack was murder put him before a civillian court at sentence him if not release him detention without trial is disgraceful. Although the comment about USA being "animal" is ironic coming from someone in Russia!
joe, Epsom, UK
This is simply a disgrace. The man is being held without charge and outside of any kind of law. It makes me sick that we continue to allow this to happen and yet call ourselves 'civilised'.
Sophie, Leamington Spa, UK
Caught on a battlefield throwing bombs while not in any countries uniform. Now he weeps? Did he weep for the women shot in stadiums? Did he weep during 9-11 or party like the rest of the Taliban? Too bad. He did the international crime, now do the time.
William, Atlanta, USA
This is terrible! Arrested child of 15 and 5 years in Guantanamo.
USA, you are animal!
Eugene, NNovgorod, Russia
Two ways this can proceed:
1) The boy is a non-combatant and therefore "murdered" the soldier with the grenade. As such he can then be tried and jailed for murder. Or ...
2) The boy is a combatant and therefore was justified in throwing the grenade, but can be held as a POW until hostilities end.
Douglas Newell, Saltcoats, Ayrshire
Torturing teenage boys. Trully the "land of the free and the home of the brave". America should be ashamed of itself - and Canada for allowing it to continue on one of their citizens.
Bill Peter, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
