The US Army is moving ahead with plans to shoot live pigs and treat their gunshot wounds in a medical trauma exercise for soldiers destined to serve in Iraq.
The army says that the exercise is critical to saving the lives of wounded soldiers. Animal rights activists have criticised the exercise as cruel and outdated.
Major Derrick Cheng, spokesman for the 25th Infantry Division, said that the training was being conducted under a US Department of Agriculture licence and the careful supervision of veterinarians and the military Animal Care and Use Committee. “It’s to teach army personnel how to manage critically injured patients within the first few hours of their injury,” he said, adding that soldiers were learning emergency life-saving skills needed on the battlefield when there were no medics, doctors or facility near by.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) said that there were more advanced and humane options available, including high-tech human simulators. In a letter, it urged the army to end all use of animals “as the overwhelming majority of North American medical schools have already done”. It added: “Shooting and maiming pigs is outdated as Civil War rifles.” (AP)

THE BIBLE SAYS IS WRONG TO EAT PIGS. TO MAKE IT WORSE USING THEM TO PRACTICE : The US Army is moving ahead with plans to shoot live pigs and treat their gunshot wounds in a medical trauma exercise for soldiers destined to serve in Iraq. THIS IS WRONG.
Stacie, San Jose ,California, Santa Clara

Twenty yrs ago i was reading where the military were using anaesthetised pigs to study wound effects of both 7.62mm and 5.56mm bullets.
Interesting that PETA chooses not to regard humans as animals as then it could speak out against war. Instead seems to encourage war by suggesting an alternative.

Funny, I never heard about this on the evening national news or read about it in the newspaper. I can only wish they were using feral hogs which are a tremendous nuisance. Short of that, any member of peta would do. I wonder if they bleed?

Couldn't they use silicone mannequins with a circulatory system made from goretex and small electric pumps? Visual effects people do this all the time for horror movies. There are also such training systems for dentists and endoscopic surgery.
Michael, Edinburgh,
Reminds me of stories of Israel military using pigs to test explosives and other weapons. And they were *NOT* anesthetized. For example, they'd lock them up, say in an old railway car, and then toss a bomb in.
Arik Silverman, MIlwaukee, USA
There is no outrage in the USA. I think i heard about it last week but no outrage. We have always tested on pigs because it works. This type of testing has gone on for years and the knowledge we have gained has been shared with all our NATO friends. Thats why Western armies have a high survivor rate

1% of city flakes who think food grows in packages can be vegan, have vit B12 deficiencies and brittle bones. They do not have the right to eradicate domestic (pet and farm) animals which they are out to do. They may NOT dicate to our military or practice medicine w/o a license. Enough!
Jack Lani , Topsfield, ME , USA
The pigs are first anesthetized and are kept under throughout the exercise. When it's over they are killed with an overdose. In the past they were then butchered and barbecued for the graduation party. It's kinder than what they would get at the slaughterhouse.

How exactly is treating injured pigs going to prepare soldiers to treat a wounded comrade? Watching the suffering and death of pigs is not going to have the same psychological impact. If they want experience, let them work EMT/ER in a large city where gunshot wounds are common. Would help more.
scarlett, Richmond, USA
absolutely appalling....but when it comes to the army i suppose i shouldnt be surprised. Theyre trained to kill humans, so why would they care about killing animals.
