He is respected for many attributes; a brilliant soldier and a skilled diplomat. But General Colin Powell a hip hop and happening rap star? That's not a description you would expect to hear.
Until last night, that is, when the former US Secretary of State climbed on stage of the Royal Albert Hall and surprised audiences with an impromptu hip hop dance and song.
Still wearing a buttoned up suit the statesman performed with Nigerian group Olu Maintain and did a version of the Nigerian dance Yahoozee. He even took the microphone to sing lyrics and showed a natural rhythm as the pop stars taught him their dance moves.
General Powell, who was the first black Secretary of State and so far the only black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was attending the Africa Rising festival, a showcase for African music and fashion.
He told the audience: “I stand before you tonight as an African American. Many people say to me, ‘You became Secretary of State of the USA, is it really necessary to say you are an African American, or that you are black?’ And I say yes, so that we can remind our children. It took a lot of people struggling to bring me to this point in history. I didn’t just drop out of the sky, people came from my continent in chains.”
Adding: “There’s no reason a new Africa can’t be created right here and now,” General Powell climbed on stage and performed the Nigerian Yahoozee dance.
Nduka Obaigbena, the organiser of Africa Rising, said: “I never thought I would see Colin Powell dance Yahoozee, he showed that common touch.”
The pop star Christina Aguilera and the soul singer Seal also performed.

The Song "Yahoozee" was a hit in Nigeria and Africa but it was very controversial because it appears to glamourise the lifestyle of the people involved in internet scams or "Yahoo Yahoo boy" as they are known in Nigeria. I think Powell may have thought twice about jumping on stage if had known this
Chizemu Ndovu, London, UK
And what is wrong about an African American dancing to the tune of an African song........?or do we say AFRICAN songs are not meant to be danced by others from other nationality?
Colin Powell in regardless of his status is still an AFRICAN, and im proud of him, cos im an AFRICAN.
Robinson, Lagos, Nigeria
I have never undestood something about human nature; why do we have to sad and cynical about everything. What has Colin Powell's dancing on stage got to do with his former job?
As an African I am proud that Colin Powell danced to our tune and recognized the efforts we are making after being exploite
Habib, London , uk

ricardo, alicante,
This is a side of former Secretary Powell we rarely get to see- I can not remember seeing him doing anything musical since he sang at the ASEAN summit in Indonesia five years ago in October of 2003-
Scott Benowitz, Rye, New York, U.S.A.
Dan you obviously only see Powell as a black man and not as the journalist is pointing out a politician with a few good dance moves.
James, London,
Colin Powell brought shame on us all by allowing himself to be used by Bush and never repudiating the evil of what he did.
Andrew G O'Donnell, Sacramento,CA., USA
Dan, you are joking right?
Katy, London, UK
So Mr Powell showed "natural rhythm" eh? I'm surprised you didn't add that he has "rubbery lips"
Journalists should be warned that cheap cliches can easily be understood as racist stereotypes.
Dan, London, UK,
History will recall Colin Powell as a good man who, through some fault of his own, was cynically used by the Dick Cheney and his operatives to vouch for WMD which did not exist.
He now again has a choice to make history -- by supporting Barack Obama against the tired old warmongering crap in D.C.
Adrian, Seattle, USA
Lovely human story. We are African, I am Indian, We are Irish, Romanian and my son married a canadian with roots from Macedonia/Romania so we kiss each other, marry each other and we become colour blind as we say in South frica or Jesse Jackson's rainbow society. It will improve in time .
