Paris Hilton, the celebrity heiress, has been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Hilton was arrested shortly before 12.30am after she was stopped in Hollywood for driving erratically.

A Los Angelese police statement said: "The officers observed that Hilton exhibited the symptoms of intoxication. A field sobriety test was conducted at scene, and the officers determined she was driving under the influence."

Hilton was booked on suspicion of driving under intoxication and released.

A spokesman for the budding pop star, Elliot Mintz, confirmed the arrest and said that she had the minimum blood-alcohol level to warrant an arrest. The legal limit in California is 0.08 percent. "She’s absolutely fine," Mr Mintz said.

At the time of her arrest, Hilton was driving home from a charity event where she had one drink, he said. She had spent the day shooting a music video for her new album.

The drink-driving symptoms were "probably the result of an empty stomach and working all day and being fatigued," Mr Mintz added.

In June, Ms Hilton backed her Range Rover into a car in a parking garage after a shopping trip.
