The man who shot dead one woman and injured 19 others at a college in Montreal yesterday portrayed himself as a gun-loving Goth who hated authority figures and wanted to die "in a hail of gunfire", according to reports.
Kimveer Gill, 25, is said to have belonged to a website called VampireFreaks.com, where - Canadian newspapers report - he posted pictures of himself dressed in a black shirt and long black trench coat with what appears to be an automatic weapon.
The image is strikingly similar to the descriptions given by terrified students, who fled the lone gunman stalking around Dawson College in Montreal yesterday lunchtime.
Six people remain in a critical condition in hospital. Two more are described as being in a "very critical condition" by Tarek Razek, head of the traumatology department at Montreal General hospital,
Gill allegedly said on the site that he liked to play "Super Columbine Massacre" - an internet game that simulates the 1999 shootings at a Colorado high school where two students killed 13 people.
On his website profile, Gill, calling himself "Trench", and talking in the third person, said: "His name is Trench. You will come to know him as the Angel of Death. He is not a people person."
His last entry on the website was reported to be at 10.41am, two hours before the shooting spree began. It reveals nothing of his impending plan.
But another entry reveals an epitaph that "Trench" is said to have left, which reads: "Lived fast died young. Left a mangled corpse."
Captions to photos, purportedly of Gill, which were posted on the website allegedly include the words: "Me again, hope this pic didn’t scare anyone too much," and "Anger and Hatred Simmers Within Me".
Asked how he wants to die, he is said to have written in his user profile: "Like Romeo and Juliet — or in a hail of gunfire."
Gill was formally identified this afternoon by Yvan Delorme, the Montreal police chief, who said that he was a 25-year-old Indian-Canadian.
Times Online has learnt that he is believed to have died from two bullet wounds, one to his chest and one to his head. Quebec police are waiting for the results of a post-mortem examination to tell if he was wounded by police and then turned one of his own guns on himself, or was killed outright by officers.
Officers who were already near the college answering a call about drugs heard Gill open fire and ran towards the sound of shooting. They opened fire, but Gill ran into the college and continued firing indiscriminately, killing a 22-year-old woman.
The officers, armed with semi-automatic pistols carrying 17 bullets each, followed him despite the threat to their lives as he tried to shoot them. They eventually shot him while he was taking cover behind a vending machine near the cafeteria.
The website shows Gill to be a lonely, conflicted figure, originally from Montreal, who hated authority figures like police, school principals and teachers, and who singled out "jocks" - popular and sporty fellow students - for high school bullying.
Gill allegedly says in his biographical profile that he was born on July 9, 1981 in Montreal, of Indian heritage, with a weakness for laziness and a fear of nothing. His goal for this year was to 'stay alive'.
He is said to have written that he misses being young, hadn't gone out for a date in a month, wore combat boots that day and loved being covered in black clothing. The web name by which he was known to other users of the website, is Fatality666.
On Tuesday, a day before the shootings, at 5am Gill is reported to have launched a tirade against authority figures.
"It's not only the bullies' fault, but the principal's fault for turning a blind eye ... it's the police's fault for not doing anything when people complain (ooooops) my mistake, the cops are corrupt sons of whores, so it's not like they can do anything about it. F--- the police."
Gill then allegedly added that he was disgusted at society, which allowed people to behave like "assholes" to each other. "Society disgusts me," he wrote.
Four hours earlier at 12.56 a.m., he is said to have posted the stark message: "F- people, F- Life."
His blog also allegedly reveals that Gill was a fan of the video game series Postal, a controversial and violent programme in which players take on the role of a killer who goes on a murderous rampage through a small town.
The website's administrators have taken down his listing, leaving a note on the site that reads that the user nicknamed Trench "has been deleted by VF admin".
A cached version of the webpage shows a tombstone with the name "Kimveer'' on it.
