Killer whale turns on trainer

SAN DIEGO A trainer at SeaWorld Adventure Park remained in hospital yesterday after a killer whale grabbed him and twice held him underwater before hundreds of shocked spectators.

Ken Peters, 39, was “resting comfortably” at the University of California, San Diego, medical centre. He was injured on Wednesday during the final show of the day at Shamu Stadium, a 36ft-deep (11m) tank. The finale called for a 17ft, 5,000lb (2.25tonne) female orca named Kasatka to shoot out of the water so that Mr Peters could dive off her nose. The whale and trainer plunged underwater, where Kasatka grabbed him by the foot and held him for less than a minute before surfacing. Mr Peters tried to calm the creature, but it grabbed him and plunged down again for about another minute before the whale finally released him. (AP)
