Record number rally to Redneck Games
America’s Summer Redneck Games were a roaring success in East Dublin, Georgia. Events included the mudpit belly flop, bobbing for pigs’ feet, the big hair contest, horseshoe with lavatory seats and the armpit serenade.

A fixture at the annual event is L-Bow, above, a local “asphalt technician” who does not have any teeth. In his dirty bib-overalls, unsavoury T-shirt and ragged old shoes, L-Bow is the mascot for the Games and has been made the official torch-bearer. With a propane torch adorned with aluminium from a 6-pack of beer, L-Bow leads the athletes into the arena (a field) and then lights the “Ceremonial BBQ Grill”.

The Redneck Games started as a joke in 1996 — when the Olympic Games were held two hours north in Atlanta — and 500 people turned up. In 2001 the crowd was estimated at more than 15,000 and at this year’s event around 20,000 spectators packed Buckeye Park on the banks of the Oconee River
