The freelance photographer whose 'girlie question' helped Hillary Clinton win the New Hampshire presidential primary has admitted that she ended up voting for Barack Obama.
Marianne Pernold Young, 64, was one of a group of 15 undecided female voters invited to a Portsmouth coffee shop on Monday for an 'intimate' chat with Hillary Clinton - with a posse of reporters and television crews in attendance.
Ms Pernold Young said that she arrived at the Cafe Espresso at 9am and sat through a dense question and answer session that was making the Washington press pack. Then she took the microphone.
"As a woman, I know it's hard to get out of the house and get ready. My question is very personal. How do you do it? How do you, how do you keep upbeat and so wonderful?" she asked.
After starting to reply with a touch of humour - she initially referred to her own appearance - Mrs Clinton visibly welled up and said, her voice catching: "It's not easy, and I couldn't do it if I didn't passionately believe it was the right thing to do. You know, I have so many opportunities from this country just don't want to see us fall backwards.
"Some people think elections are a game and they think it's like who's up or who's down. It's about our country. It's about our kids; futures. And it's really about all of us together."
The next day, female voters - who had deserted her in the Iowa caucus - flooded back to help Mrs Clinton become the first woman to win a presidential primary. She had overturned a double-digit opinion poll lead for Mr Obama, the young black senator for Illinois, and even her own campaign credited her public show of emotion for the turnaround.
"It's amazing how one compassionate sentence could cause such a ripple. It's just mind-boggling," Ms Pernold Young told the Los Angles Times, before confiding that she had almost backed off from asking her question.
"I wasn't going to ask it, because every time I thought of it, my heart would pound," she said. "Why would she want to deal with something like this? It's too girlie."
Ms Pernold Young said that she had been as shocked by Mrs Clinton's response as everyone else in the room, including the journalists jolted awake by the show of emotion.
After verifying that the candidates eyes had indeed dampened - but that she had stopped short of actual tears - reporters in the coffee shop had approached her and asked her if she was a Clinton campaign plant. She replied that she was just an ordinary New Hampshire voter.
But while her question was credited with bringing thousands of women back into the Clinton camp, Mrs Pernold Young - who had herself been brought to tears by the oratory of Mr Obama two days earlier - was not among them.
From her front row view of Mrs Clinton's moment of emotion, she had been distinctly unimpressed by the way that the former First Lady had gone straight back into politician mode after giving her answer.
"I took a walk on the beach and all I thought was how Obama made me feel and I thought about Hillary's response to me, and I thought she was a soft feminine woman for seven seconds," she said.
"When she turned, she adapted this political posture again, the stiffness and the rhetoric, and I said I really want to vote for Obama."

Hillary is the best candidate -- it will take a woman to clean up the messes men have made in the country since the beginning. Obama is too inexperienced and while he talks well enough, talk is cheap. Hillary is proven in her role as a Senator and she will make this country great again!

I am a Christian, black, professional woman in my 40's. I have children and grandchildren. IT IS TIME FOR CHANGE! I work in a predominantly white male orientated profession for 18 yrs. and suffer from the same ignorance now that I suffered from in my young childhood. Basically, ignorance when it comes to who is more qualified to run this country. If you subtract the actual total of Mrs Clinton's politcal years from her alledged 35 yrs experience, what do you come up with? Approx. 4 yrs. You cannot count the years in the White House or Governor's mansion as "political experience". She was the 1st Lady--NOT the President nor Governor. So how much experience over Mr. Obama does she REALLY HAVE? Being married to the President DOES NOT QUALIFY YOU BY ASSOCIATION!! Having a Master's Degree in Theology I find Mr. Obama's speeches regarding religion to be sound doctrine as a Christian-not reflective of Muslims/Islamic teaching. Trying to bate Mr. Obama is futile; just debate the issues!!

I rather see a Christian American female as a President that knows what she is talking about, has a plan and experience than a possible Muslim male that promises a change that no one knows what kind of change is that, without any program and plan for the American and World's future

I believe her response was genuine and if she were a man, it would have been interpreted differently. If it would have been Barack crying the world would have thought he cared, but since it's Hillary they want to make her seem week. I am also nausiated by the press and their usage of this incident to discredit Hillary. I can't fathom that over 15 thousand people changed their minds simply because she cried. The media want you to believe that because they want to down play her impressive resume. The fact is that people voted for her not because she cried, but because we know that she is a far better candidate than Barack, that is why people voted for her and will continue to vote for her. We understand that the country needs as strong leader that is ready to make the changes necessary that will put our wonderful country back on the right track and we know that Hillary can do that and Obama can not. I believe the debate on Saturday turned things around not the coffee shop event.

It's time for a woman to become a president of the United States. Those men that serve this country has it all for the longest period of time. Why can't people give a woman a chance to become a president and run this country? I believe she is not a bad image, I believe gender roles don't really matter when it comes to the people and for the people. Hillary is a genuine woman I support her and we need her to be the next commander in chief of this country. Let's give her a chance people, you never know she really must be the change of this country if that's what we all are seeking for. CHINO OF ORLANDO

Hiliary Clinton is my hero. In one's life time, one is blessed to have witnessed from a distance that the lady is a lady, the woman is a woman, and above all...Hiliary is a very talented and gifted child of God. As president, she has worked hard to get what it takes to be the levels she has reached this far....and its time for a change.

Would Mrs. Pernold Young had wanted Hillary Clinton to fallen into a tearful weeping "soft feminine" woman before the group/world? I for one see her as a feminine woman with a mission & being able to get control of her emotions and moving forward. Women should be able to be both strong and compasionate all in one.
I'm for Hillary Clinton, it's time for woman to be able to serve our country as President. The men sure have made a mess of thing thus far.
How about letting Hillary Clinton serve and clean up America for the next 2 terms. With her many years of experience in & around DC - I believe she is the best of all the canditates.

Big deal.
Every dog has its day. Clinton Camp needed this desparately.
It wont to amount to a hill of beans. Hillary is done.

This is the moment Obama has in his speech, about a moment of epiphany when "a light will shine and all of a sudden you will know who you should vote for"!
The woman didn't hesitated to ask the question thinking it is so girlie but something more powerful was playing role - which made her ask the question. That's when the light shone and for a very short moment people got to see who Hillary Clinton really is: a very compassionate woman who sincerely cares about others. This what epiphany is. The light shine for a moment only! Then people have to make their own decision. You can't complain about the fact that the light shone only momentarily! It doesn't matter. At the end of the day, Hillary is also a human being who cares. Don't try to judge her for being a woman and not showing enough emotions. She is who she is. And she is what she does and have done and will do. She is the change we need. And something beyond anyone's control and power tried to show that by shedding light !!
Jessie, NYC, NY
Or did Mrs. Young tried to distract Hillary by asking such "girlie" question when she had already made up her mind to vote for Obama. Since Hillary was a down and out with real people answering questions that matter at the end of the day. One less question related to issues at hand would better for the rival. I guess she forget that Hillary too a human being with a heart. She doesn't walk around with her heart on her sleevs that doesn't mean she doesn't have one. Her actions and work of her lifetime shows that she has a heart, a big heart that cares.

All politics appears today to be spin, a show of tears (carefully timed ), emotive words and promises (that show a caring nature) but later turn out to be like castles of sand washed away with the next tide.
All politics seems today to be about giving someone power and prestige they have neither earned nor go on to deserve, (oh and a good pension when they get found out.).
No other field allows (indeed expects) it's proponents to lie to, deceive and feather their nest on the backs of the people they allegedly serve.
Why else would we have political dynasties except for the fact that it is easy money.
Howard, Basildon, England
Ms Clinton's uncharacteristic display of 'emotion' has to rank as one of the most pathetic and cynical attempts to manipulate opinion in an American electoral campaign for some years. It seems that this woman will stop at nothing to get her way, and one gets the impression that she believes the presidency is hers by right. Obama and McCain are the best options for people who prize national unity over partisan politics; it is also obvious that they believe in what they are saying, unlike Mrs Clinton, who believes only what her focus groups tell her. In that regard, she may turn out to be the American Blair and if that is the case, then God help us.

Wonder if Barack Obama is thinking of the old Burl Ives classic "A little bitty tear let me down......."?

This is a great article. I admire Mrs. Pernold Young for her thoughtfulness. I wish every voter took their votes with such deep reflection as she. This is a very important election, and if the wrong person gets in, then we might find ourselves living in a very different country in 4 years as we have after the past 8. Personally, I find Ron Paul to offer the most positive opportunity, but that comes after my own analysis and reflection. Mr. Young - it sure sounds like you've found yourself a great wife.

Very difficult to please everybody.
It's Mrs Young who has a problem and not Mrs Clinton.
Did Mrs Young really expect Mrs Clinton to behave in "girlie fashion" all the way through and not take on a politician stance even after the "compassionate" question? From her interview, Mrs Young would have wanted Mrs Clinton to break down completely. Surely, that would have drawn flak even from her.
Mrs Clinton is aspiring to become leader, commander in chief of the world's most powerful nation -- why should she be "girlie"? Such attitude would definitely not be in keeping with the role one expects of a US president.
I suspect Mrs Young wasnt entirely being truthful -- she had made up her mind about voting for Obama even before she asked the question. If she had truly wanted to be thorough, she should've asked Mr Obama the SAME question.
