Bill Clinton claims vote rigging | HIllary wins Nevada | US elections blog | Clinton/Obama swap poison | McCain wins SC
AMERICA’S favourite television presenter is paying a painful price for her intervention in the US presidential campaign last month. Oprah Winfrey has been dubbed a “traitor” by some of her female fans for supporting Barack Obama instead of Hillary Clinton.
Winfrey’s website, Oprah.com, has been flooded with a barrage of abuse since the queen of daytime chat shows joined Obama on a tour of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina in mid-December.
Her intervention was widely credited with broadening Obama’s national appeal - especially among women - and with helping him to an upset victory over Clinton in the first vote of the election year in Iowa.
Yet a backlash by Clinton supporters appears to have prompted a rethink by Winfrey, the African-American media titan who is routinely described as the most influential woman on television.
She did not reappear in the final days before the New Hampshire primary - which Obama lost to Clinton - and has been absent from the most recent campaigning in South Carolina, which votes next weekend.
Obama aides believe that Winfrey will return to the campaign. Her own staff noted last week that in addition to her daily broadcasts on television and satellite radio, she has also been busy negotiating a multi-million-dollar deal with the Discovery cable network to create her own television channel, the Oprah Winfrey Network.
Yet Obama’s rivals suspect that Winfrey has been startled by the virulent reaction to her previous campaign appearance.
It started with a message on her website entitled “Oprah is a traitor” and rapidly expanded to include several discussions that attracted hundreds of comments.
In the original post, a reader called austaz68 said she “cannot believe that women all over this country are not up in arms over Oprah’s backing of Obama. For the first time in history we actually have a shot at putting a woman in the White House and Oprah backs the black MAN. She’s choosing her race over her gender.”
In a subsequent comment, 2nurselady wrote: “I don’t think Oprah is a ‘traitor’, but I do think she may be alienating a lot of her fans.”
Others have accused Winfrey of racism for siding with Obama when such a well qualified woman as Clinton was running.
Winfrey has built her career on empathising with women’s issues and offering a daily diet of redemption and hope. Her show typically focuses on women who have suffered but survived.
So hostile has the response been that some suspect dirty tricks. “All the rude and hateful messages on here can’t be from Oprah fans,” another visitor noted. “Someone’s campaign (wonder who?) is sabotaging the message boards.”
Winfrey received a rapturous reception when she campaigned with Obama last month. Yet several analysts warned that she might adversely affect his chances.
Steve Ross, a history professor at the University of Southern California, said: “The moment a star opens their mouth and endorses one candidate, they alienate half their viewership.”

I have many more reason in cutting Ophrah from my agenda. I feel that through the years her opinins and views have totally changed from mine. I will never watch an Ophah show again.
I will always want the best for her, but I am no longer a fan.

This is ridiculous! Oprah has the right to vote for who she wants & to support who she wants. Just because she is a woman does not mean she has to vote/support for the female candidate. If that's the case, then all women who voted for Obama-McCain (anyone but Hilary) would be considered "traitors'
Diana, Thessalonika, Greece
Oprah has trhe right to vote for who she wishes. Yes she has a chat show but is entitled to vote for who she felt was right. I beleive that all races and origins should have the same chances. I admire Obama's drive and determination. Remember he is of mixed parentage and is there for all origins.

you can bet her tax won't goup if obama wins the cars she gives away cost person who gits it 7.000 & she gits a write off if she cared for america she would be spending some here instead of africa kenya for more write offs
DON, las vegas nv.,
Oprah...you shouldn't have endorsed your choice for President (no matter who they are) because you're too well known and influencial to a whole lot of people. It's different when the movie stars do it...they don't have a talk show like you do.I will not be watching you or reading your magazines again
Catherine, Simpsonville, USA
Stay out of it Oprah...you have too much influence with the ignorant. I for one will vote for a man who can stand toe to toe with Putin and not dither, or back down.
Donna, Spokane, USA
She doesn't need to stay out of politics - what an arrogant thing to say! She still has to live under a government like everyone else for god's sake so she's entitled to have an opinion. She's doing what she thinks is right whether or not you like it. Stop being so ridiculously babyish about this.
Jessica, hartlepool,
Oprah
please stay out of politics let people make up their own minds,
its a pity that America is only inspired by TV show host's opinion.
" America, look at, policies, and not the man.
think for yourselves, you dont need some television celebrity to make your minds up for you' or do you!!

You so called democratics ort to wise up and practice the democratic values you profess to believe in. Regardless of her wealth and celebrity, Oprah is entitled to vote for whom ever she personally feels is the best presidential candidate. it is very undemocratic of you to demonize her for this.
miss v m williams, Liverpool, England
I think that oprah should b allowed to do and vote 4 who she like,s. the thing is oprah as done a lot of good in the world and should not b criticised 4 haveing her own views. Ignore them u have to feel sorry 4 narrow minded people like them.Go 4 it girl i wont stop watching u. Good luck.

Lady,s u make me so ashamed of being a women. U dont want a woman in power. It dont work we know. never again. As 4 oprah the way some of u women r behaving towards her is the reasone u dont want a women in power. your attitude is do as i say or i wont talk or watch u again. c what i mean.

This is America still a free country Oprah can endorse who she wants and she dosent owe anyone an explaination and if you really want to talk Ms. Mya Angalou endoresed Hillary a black activist what did white america have to say? Nothing cause it was her decision and she's still well respected

Just because Oprah supports Barack over Clinton does not mean she chose race over women. It may well be a preference of character or integrity which everyone is entitled to, including stars. My mother supports Hillary and I support .both believe it or not but unfortunately I can't vote for 2

Oprah has lost TONS OF VIEWERS since she backed obama

Oprah, you did sell out women for the Man; women made you wealthy and you throw us under the bus. I stopped watching your show a while ago. Women fought for you right to vote not Obama's boys. Hillary is an incredible candidate and Obama is not qualified.
Shaniqua, Lansing, US
The person that commented on the persons (obama) character was absolutely without a doubt correct. I think it starts out WE THE PEOPLE..and that we stand for unity..This person obama if you really start looking at his background is not for WE the people. Its like all the sudden theres a double standard to being american..and it shouldnt be that way. I for one would not vote for the man because he just does not have the background to be considered the type of american to govern and watch our land of freedom. For me its not racial its character
shelly, ocala florida, united states
I like Barak Obama because he tells it like it is. For those of you who berate him for the words of Reverend Wright, smell the roses. The 20th century for Afro-Americans was filled with frustration, bigotry and despair. The problem is that white American often does not like to hear or acknowledge this. No, I am not black. Those of you who lack the empathy and understanding of Afro-Americans from slavery to the present need the experience of reincarnation as a black person in one of the inter-cities of the U.S. That experience will help you understand their expression of anger.

After reading quite a few post,I feel compelled to say Oprah does have a right to support, endorse and fund whomever she pleases and we have a right to no longer be fans, support her shows, books, etc. What alot of people fail to realize is this should not be about color or gender. This is about our country,I decided not to vote for Obama bc I think he showed a serious lack of character sitting in a church for 20 yrs that spews hate, honored Louis Farrakhan and whose wife out of her own mouth has never been proud of our country. This is not about race or should not be...it should be about character.I have researched eveything I can find about Mr Obama's veiws toward Israel there is too much uncertainty. The main persons I disagree with is those who say religion does not matter. This country was founded on Godly principles, blessed by God bc we defend Israel and it will be the end of life as we know it ."all it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing"If you pray,do it now...
gail, greenwood , la.
come on people! face it what makes Obama less qualify to be a president of this great nation(USA). Was George Bush Qualify when he took office the first time and ran the second time and won. Didn't the american people know he was a jackass to lead this great nation? Look at the economy and war? Look at John F. kennedy, he came in not known anything. What is wrong with obama? He is a white man and a black man. Leave this race issue out of it. His mother was white and father black african. What is wrong with that? I voted for --------. If Hiliary wins, I would be happy and if obama wins, I'll still be happy. VOTE , VOTE, VOTE

Can any one tell me what it is that Mr. Obama has accomplished politically? He wants to a "change"...yes, but what kind? Somehow I can't help but think of the "pied-piper"...people follow him and don't even know why...I am also reminded of hearing.."he will be charismatic, good-looking, charming and intelligent" and people will follow him and not know why...scares me.

Now what do you say, Oprah? After Jeremiah Wright, O'bama's
spiritual mentor for over 20 years. - Sheesh! Oprah ... you blew it. If you think its ok to have a hate filled reverend (which is not like you- or have we been fooled all along too?) Either you think its ok or you did NOT do your homework very thoroughly - none of these options speraks very well for you. I will NEVER watch your show again. You stole The Big Give idea - and you use this to deflect your horrendous judgement. It won't wash....buh bye Oprah.
Kathy, Seattle,
Here we go again.Hillary Clinton was not just a 1st lady:
1. She is a lawyer who has a long career in defending childrens and womens rights with many agencies including the childrens defense fund. She helped pass laws making it mandatory to report child abuse while in Arkansas. As first lady of Arkansas she was pivotal in educational reform changing laws for manditory teacher testing and smaller classes. IAlso in Arkansas she helped with health care reform for poor rural people. As first lady she served on the family first and adoption act by helping put laws in place to move foster children faster into permanent homes. As senator she sponsered the fair pay act which put stiffer penalties against employers who discriminated against women and minorities.
She helped raise funds for firefighter and police families after 9/11. She and Ted Kennedy sponsered the Schip program health care for low income children. Please do research
brenda krause, colorado springs, colorado
Will somebody tell me why a one time first lady becomes anymore qualified to be president than anyone else.
Just because you hang out in a garage don't make you a car!

I have also tuned out from the Oprah Show since she took a stand Obama vs Hillary. I can't fathom Oprah not having had the common sense to remain neutral.
It just goes against personal ethics not to have done so.
From then on I have chosen alternative avenues of accessing inspiration, understanding, and enlightenment as i travel life's journey.

I think everyone is crazy! WHo would want someone like Clinton to run for president!? I wish with a firey passion that she'd just give up and LET Obama win. Everyone has their own opinion and ppl shouldnt judge someone for their point of view! I've been judged all my life and its NOT FAIR! ppl need to back off oprah. I'm not a fan. I dont like her. But obscenes such as racism and opinions are STUPID! And immature. I hope Obama wins, I'm white, female. Clinton doesnt deserve to be president. Not EVER!
Goth Me, Selma, indiana
I adore Oprah and I watch her every moment. To me I feel that Oprah always thinks twice before she makes any serious decisions. There are more important matters in life rather than criticising people who have a mind of their own. Anyway, I wish you all the best Oprah. God bless you.
Sunita, Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA
I used to watch Oprah on a daily basis. I have for years. Once I learned that she chose to support Obama over a woman who is more qualified, I felt so hurt, betrayed and disgusted that I immediately removed Oprah from my DVR.
I am still very disgusted about it, and I will never ever support her again---EVER!!!!
BOYCOTT OPRAH!!
Katherine, NY, NY
Oprah has the right to back whatevery candidate she chooses, and she saw an integrity in Obama which she appears to feel is needed in America's leadership. If you have a difference of opinion stop crying over her choices and make your own based on your own viewpoint of the matter. Like she said She is Free and thus able to make her political affiliations as she sees fit irregardless of what your preferences and thoughts might be. Goodnesss people: Wake up to self and your own life and then you wouldn't have to disparage others for living theirs.
Kay, Georgia, USA
If the Democratic Party runs Obama, then I will never vote again. I have always voted Dem. I will never vote again if my party runs Obama. I cannot even think of myself as an American if this happens. I am a middle aged person.... my race and my gender are not the issue here. What is at issue is that Obama is not qualified to be president of the United States. I am ashamed of what's happening because of this man.
Mary , Springdale , AR
Oprah, my dear, dear, dearest Oprah,
You lost me. I thought you were stronger and smarter and really did have your head in the right place. Sadly, it seems you too, have lost touch with your truest roots. Bouyed by wealth and therefore power, as well as fame, you were lulled by their siren songs, and have lost the vision you once had of being able to rise above them to help bring humanity to a better way. Having cared about you very much ever since The Color Purple," it hurts me deeply to see you make such a tragic error. I do not mention my race because watever rage I feel regarding racial injustice pales, when I am so very aware of the sexual injustice not only within each race, but nationally, religiously and globally. I feel your endorsement of Obama is Tragic not only for you, but for our country and our planet as well. I wish you well always.
Signed Dissapointed
Linda Wharton, california, maryland
I have to say that I do take exception with Oprah. She made her millions on the women viewers she claims to empathsize so with. She gave Obama 100 million dollars for his campaign on the backs of those very viewers.
It was her endorsement that caused his "miraculous" rise on little record. I mean let's face facts. If a the man running were a woman, on such a razor thin record she'd be laughed off the ballot.
This is no different than watching the corner office you worked thirty five years to get, go to the young hot shot male with no experience. Many women have had to face it. But to have Oprah endorse that when she would not have that money if not for her largely middle income female viewers is distasteful. She knew when she endorsed and backed him it would influence many other women.
It's mostly young women who vote for Obama. Women who we older women paved the way for. Some of us won't be here to see a qualified woman president if Obama wins. Yes, that stings. Break that ceiling
Ruth, Sherwood, AR.
I think it's silly that everyone is getting so upset over who Oprah chooses to support. Every individual is allowed to have their own political opinion and I don't think it should affect what you think of the person. Oprah probably supports Obama for his main issues and perhaps his charisma, not only because he happens to be black. This just goes to show that people can't look past WHAT the candidates are to see what they want to do for our country, and that is no way to perceive the future leaders of our country.
Allison, Easton, USA, PA
I am among many who have been astounded and appalled by Oprah's campaigning. Unlike your article of December, she has plunged on - without a care for the impact on a sizeable portion of her fans. True, she has nothing financially to lose over the lower ratings she'll receive - American women have made her one of the richest people on the planet. It would be nice if she only cared and it hurts to know that she doesn't. She continues actively soliciting funds and votes AGAINST t the first (and highly qualified and caring) woman president - while we, her longtime fans can only wonder - how many dollars earned on our trust in her (as our foremost advocate) have been poured into Obama's media attack ads against Hillary Clinton? Karma, Oprah, Karma
j. tschetter, walworth, USA/WI
Oprah should be able to support whoever she wants. I don't fault her for that. IT does reveal something about her that women fans did not realize - she is for the black community first, then women. Obama has literally no record at all but still gains Oprah's support. Yet, I can't say I would look forward to another Clinton White House. Either way, I see a lose-lose situation, but no one should be upset with Oprah for choosing the candidate she wants to support, but we still have the choice of whether or not to support her show if you really don't agree with her. I recommend turning Oprah off if you don't like her politics or get over it and move on!
Amy Wilson, Tulsa, OK
Go Oprah, stick with the WINNER.

Fellow Americans: Let's not get emotionally carried away with
what people say about the candidates or endorsements. Be
wise voters!!!!!! Think about the U.S. national problems/issues
and listen to the candidates' resolutions to the current problems. Remember though, anybody
who is new to the job will take him time to deal with the issues!
Common sense applies to any kind of job,.... We should not
make another mistake choosing the wrong one!!! Look back to U.S. best economic times......... I think the Clinton regime
contributed much to the economic success, so let's vote for
Hillary Clinton!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sakura, Irvine, California

Juline Roberts, Tallahassee, FL
Oprah long ago learned that she swings a big bat. Her support of Obama is nothing less than a slap in the face to voters, and a nasty way of getting free exposure for "HER" candidate. Her support has been, at best, unfair and more honestly prejudicial. I will never support, watch, or in any way put one more nickel toward something Oprah does. She blew it for me. This is no different than the Bush administration and the underhanded way the last election went. I am deeply disappointed in her lavish support of a man with 1 lousy year as a Senator and zero business acumen. She should have waited 8 years. If he wins it will be nothing less than a disaster.
Angie Lakely, Los Angeles, CA
Oprah is not a traitor to anyone. It is widely documented has virtually NO EXPERIENCE from when Bill was president. She also has very little experience on her own. She also has a habit of shooting off her mouth and alienating people, which would not be a good thing when dealing with other countries at all. I believe Oprah considered all of this and made a more informed decision. If only more voters could do the same thing America would be a lot better off.
Jonathan, Milwaukee, Wi
If Obama had the experience of Clinton I wouldn't mind that Winfrey backed him. But, Folks, we have to get a lot of stuff done in this country right away and Obama will not be able to do it. He will take a year to learn the ropes. Clinton knows the White House drill, and she knows the corridors of Congress.
She's got the smarts to GET THINGS DONE. Mend this country! Vote Hillary!

First, I am a woman. Secondly, some of these women need to "get a life". Why support someone just because they are a "woman".? Oprah had sense to look at the issues and agree with Obama. This is still America and people can make their own decisions.
maya, NEW YORK, NY
In Case You Missed It:
Sen. Obama turned down Hillary's invitation to debate in Maine. Though both candidates will be in the state tomorrow, Sen. Obama isn't ready to hold a joint town hall.
Another example of his attempt to squeak by on rhetoric, one liners, hyp and "the movement."
Vision........ Sustance....... NO.
Lisa, Greensboro, nc
This is a time when Americans have the opportunity for change, real change. The war is supported because our men and women are in harms way - but it is not desired. Rumors of more wars threaten us daily. Healthcare is no where to be found, we are on the verge of recession if not already at risk, families are losing their homes with each tick of the clock. We can see the past has not worked. For decades the Clintons and Bush's have had their opportunity to "turn things around", things continued to spiral. Iâm a Republican man but I see Barack Obama as a NEW CHOICE, he has a vision of America I would wish to live in and leave to my children. It's not about him being black or her being a woman. It is about CHANGE. The results on Tues show he can win against a white male conservative. Independent, liberal conservatives, MEN like me WILL VOTE FOR HIM. NOT HER. To win the presidency you must have the support of men as a whole, We will have McCain as president if Hillary is the choice.
Larry Callmets, Dallas, Texas
I am a white woman and I believe that in some way Oprah's endorsement evens the score a bit on the race/gender issue. There are a lot of prejudice white women who don't want a black man in office, believe it or not, but would vote for a woman in a heart beat. That being said, I don't like the way she criticized women for feeling like they have to vote for a woman out of some duty or responsibility. As a woman, all my life I have bought into the myriad excuses and reasons why women should take a back seat, and so when I criticize and examine the woman candidate, I feel a sense of responsibility not to buy into that.
jamie, Weymouth, Massachusetts
It is super tuesday, and I feel totally dismayed. Why, why, why did the democrats give us a controversial woman and an inexperienced black man at a time like this when this country needs democrats the most. I like both candidates, but I am pissed off, because I really think we are going to lose, again. And Oprah does have every right to back her candidate....still, I think the old white man is going to win, not because he is white either, but because this country is not ready to embrace the world view qualities that these great candidates possess.
Wake up America: Back both of these candidates, unless you think it is already too late.
jamie, Weymouth, Massachusetts
It seems to me that history tells the story. The 15th Amendment to the Constitution gave black men the right to vote back in 1870. It wasn't until the 19th Amendment in 1920 that women got the same privilege. Sexism was tolerated for 50 years longer than racism with respect to voting (though some folks in Florida might disagree), I can't see any reason why the trend wouldn't continue. As a black woman, Oprah wins either way. Her wealth gives her power that the common woman (of any race) doesn't enjoy so perhaps she still struggles with racial issues more than gender. How that means anything when comparing the careers and experience of Clinton and Obama is beyond me.
Charles, Clark, NJ
so you want her to vote for H.C. simply because she is a woman & NOT WHO SHE BELIEVES IS THE BEST PERSON FOR THE JOB!!!!!!!! you people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!GET OVER IT!!!!!!!
NINA LECROY, KNOXVILLE, TN
Hi I think that we should not expect anyone to support politicians on their gender alone but rather on the wholistic point of view. Where does it say in the United States constitution that one has to support on the basis colour, religion, gender or sexual preferences. I don't recall God, the good Creator giving up his job as the judge to anyone. We are to support the individual best qualified for the job.
Judi Johnny, Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada
Oprah has the right to support anyone she damn well pleases as do we all. If you can't think for yourself and vote your own conscience, then you shouldn't vote. My opinion is that this country needs an effective voice for change and that is Obama. Clinton will simply bring more of the same.
Diane, Skowhegan, ME
Every individual have their own right to support who they want. How dare they call Oprah a "traitor" because she favours Barack. So what? This is not about colour or gender, however what is wrong with her voting for her fellow african american? does it matter? is it anyones business? she's not holding up anyones hand to vote for barack, she's holding her own and if they prefer, they can endorse and vote for anyone they want to. It gets me angry when people make such comments. Let me tell yall something Hilary cares less about women so I don't know why people make a big deal out of it. She just uses it as a campaign strategy but she couldn't care less if they voted for her as long as she wins shes blessed. How come we're accused of supporting our fellow black people however we cannot criticise those who vote for their fellow whites just because of conservatism we have to stick with the 'white' tradition'. It gets me angry.
VOTE FOR OBAMA, 08
alby, edmonton,
I think that just like anyone else in the U.S. Oprah has the right to back whatever candidate she wants- male ,female, black, white or purple. Everyone else has that right.
Debbie R., St. Louis, MO
I think oprah it's your money do what you want with it...... if you , oprah didn't have any money it wouldn't matter`, so you made your money give it to who ever you want .... it's all about the money. i say do you oprah. we love you
eunice mosley, markham, IL
Anyone who is saying that Oprah is a traitor can go to #$&#. Of course she is backing Barack Obama because he is the most qualified to deliver change in this country. It has nothing to do with gender or race. Has anyone noticed that Hillary is not running it is Bill. He wants his chance to finish in the White house. Maybe a few more sexy interns there that he missed.
It is not about her experience it is Bill's. Some people say that she is experienced because she watched everything Bill did. Well she missed Monica. Maybe if she does become President she will feel sorry for the terrorists too! She even said on Tyra Banks show that she stayed with Bill because it was best for her, she never said it was because she loved him.
Give me a break Hillary is the biggest fairy tale I've ever seen or heard.
bren, houston, tx
I echo the setiments of T.Carpenter from Texas. Being an East Indian MALE, did not give me an edge over women or other white MALES in my history of job searches. I am where I am today because someone decided to go out on a limb and give me a chance to prove myself, and also because there was no white candidate. I, we, have to work twice as hard to prove ourselves, and I am sure Hiliary did not have the obstacles and hudles that Obama and his followers have to encounter to get ahead. Witness the debate rahing right now, Obama shoud be evalauated on his abilities, but his race seems to take centre stage n this debate. So I agree with Oprah in her endorsement of Obama, she knows the plight of her people is more important, but it does not minimize her support of the female cause. We can only hope that someone more in touch with the masses gets in power than some oil rich, pompous millionnaire who does not care the least for the millions of disenfranchised Americans.
Gitty , Toronto, Canada
I am amazed at how some of you feel it's wrong for her to support Barack. First off anytime you hear a new report the state " women" and "blacks". Now if that isn't making it clear that we are still referenced by the color of our skin although we're women, then I am not sure what it means. I want the individual in office that I feel is best fit; not because they're a woman or black just because they care and want to move this country forward. Why do black women always have to defend their choices in beauty, politics, education, our way of talking (deemed aggressive), you name it. When is the last time you had to fight to have your ideas considered because your white. I didn't think so. When is the last time you saw 9 black people or nine asian or 9 hispanics on the jury and one white person? I didn't think so. It's obvious that some individuals live under the fallacy that because I'm a womam I am treated the same when in fact I am a "black" woman, which is often made light of.
T. Carpenter, San Antonio, Texas
woman can never agree on anything, its ashame, here we have the first woman to have a chance to lead the most powerful nation ever and woman must find ways to discredit her.
I guesse that's what happen when their a penis involve, female solidarity disapears.
carol, cali, california
I only have one question ,if you had a business to run who would you pick to run your business Miss Oprah. I don't think it would be the one you are voting for..if he doesn't get president he can always go get a job from you. Black is black white is white woman is woman... man is man.Come on people this is our Country , We want the best one that can go in there and make the USA the best it can be. Yes , I would like a woman president but i want to know that when i'm 62 and can't work that there is going to be a check coming in the mail for me every month because i have worked since i was 12 yrs old. I'm 48 yrs old now and single with no kids ,but it is hard making a living in Ga.I say to all let's just pray that we all are smart when we vote and just vote for the one that is going to be the best one........
Tammy, Blackshear, USA/ Ga.
Amazing! A-freaking-amazing! Ms. Winfrey is as far from a traitor as Hillary Clinton is from the truth! I agree, as a black woman and a strong one, that we do not identify totally with the issues of white women. We are identified first by the color of our skin then our gender. It's okay to me that everyone does not see or know this; what's important is that I know this. I am not defined by other's definition of me. I simply will not acquiesce to others prenomitions of what I should or should not do or be doing. I don't see Ms. Winfrey in this light and I pray to God she will not fall prey to the idiosyncrasies of white women in America! All women have suffered unmercifully at the hands of cruel, insensitive, and brain dead men. The difference white women live in a bubble that I call The Nile or denial! I have learned that crocodiles live in the The Nile (River) and they will bite! Black women will support strong black men; Ms. Winfrey threw her credibile support to Sen Obama, so do I!!
Theresa Bailey McClendon, Duluth, Georgia
Our country would be in better standing if we stopped voting for gender, race and party. We need to really look at the issues and the stance of the candidates to determine who is the best choice to be in the leadership position of our country.
Pam, Canon City, Colorado
I am a hispanic woman and I am with Hillary. I don't identify myself as a hispanic woman but a woman. Am I a clown for supporting the most qualified candidate?
Anabel Solis, Orlando, Fl
This is laughable. Do these feminists have any idea how utterly foolish they are and how rediculous they look? Here is a little factoid for women to digest. Minority women (e.g. black, hispanic, etc.) have never been down with the struggle in the same way as white women. To the white feminist woman, man is the ultimate enemy. But to the black woman, race will almost always trump gender. You can look at virtually any celebrity out there (Whoopi Goldberg for example) and this is obviously true. They don't refer to themselves as a woman; they instead emphasize that they are a "black woman". Yet we have these silly white girls running around telling themselves that they are part of a sisterhood that crosses racial boundaries and that they are all after the same thing. They even fool themselves into thinking black men sympathize with them as fellow "victims" of the oppression of white men.
The real story here is how these feminists have looked like clowns for so long.
Dave, Tulsa,
When mrs Thatcher went to the polls in the UK she did not court women specifically nor did she endorse feminism.
She had policies which were laid out for the country as a whole
to benefit everyone.
Can the USA ,with hand on heart say the same thing of these 2 candidates?.
I am told that Oprah has been a financial supporter of Obama for some time but I think she should have been quiet about it.
michael savell, eastbourne, uk
Hillary has one so much for women, children, and education. She has the education, the political experience and the support of her family. With Hilary, you know where she stands on issues. She is direct, percise and her past accomplishments prove this. AND she is a woman and is adamant about bringing home our troops. Sons, fathers, uncles and friends. THANK YOU HILARY FOR ALL THAT YOU DO!
Mary, Fontana, CA
It's funny how some women feel that Oprah is wrong for not supporting a woman candidate simply because she's a woman. If she were to support Hillary, then others would feel it's wrong that she's not supporting a member of her race. It appears that this is a no win situation for her. Why can' t Oprah just be an intelligent woman who is backing the candidate whose policies she most identifies with regardless of whether or not they're a woman, Black, etc. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and she's no different. Hillary has the backing of her husband, former President Clinton and no one is balking at the tag team job the two of them are doing on Obama. Just being a former president gives him an advantage over the other candidates so whoever Obama and/or John can get to support them is warranted. We voters need to focus on more important issues than who's backing/supporting who since we have the last say!
P. Hodge, New London, CT
I can't (be bothered to) find the post to which keri refers, but assuming it is quoted accurately.... how can kathy fail to see the irony of her thinking that oprah is "above race consciousness", but being "disappointed" that she "sided against... a fellow woman"? the same question goes for every "feminist" correspondent.
if oprah supports obama, she's racist; if she supports clinton, she's sexist. it seems the only "honourable" option for oprah is to vote mccain. or keep quiet, I suppose.
jem, london, uk
As a Oprah woman fan, I was more than a little taken aback that the person who I really thought was way and above race consciousness sided with a man based purely on his skin color, and against a fellow woman running for president. This is a terrible disapointment for me. I mean I thought we were on the same wavelength. Goes to show that unfortunately race is very much a part of selection. But it's not right. It will be more difficult to counter when you hear that "black men and woman are the best racist I know." This unfortunate Oprah selection based on a persons race will now be used as evidence of racism. And that's a fact."
This is the stupidest comment in the world! Oprah should vote for who she thinks is best for the country and who has the most policies she agrees with. Voting for Hillary Clinton just because shes a woman is just as bad as voting for Barak Obama just because hes black and totally missing the point of democracy.
Stuart, Harrogate, UK
I wrote a comment to an article some time ago and was horrified by the hateful response. With much investigation, I discovered that most of it was sent by ONE unbalanced person who had been found guilty of harassment in a court of law. Those negative comments could have easily been sent by a rival's team...dirty tricks are so loved in this country.
Scooby, Las Vegas, USA
This does not surprise me. When the going gets tough, the 'race' issue becomes part of the battlefield. When everyone thought that Clinton was way ahead in the polls, there was no mention of Obama's ethnicity. Now that Obama has rattled a few cages, the Clinton croneys are trying to scare Americans away from the black guy. To do this by abusing Oprah, who has demonstrated repeatedly that she never takes race as an issue, is typical of the dirty tricks that some will use. It scares me to think that rather than vote for the best candidate, some are trying to vote based on sex. Shame - they will get the President they deserve and America will suffer.
DLL, Brussels,
Oprah can support whoever she wants and say whatever she wants, whether it's about this election or any other issue - period. She is not beholden to her audience or fans. Growup and start thinking for yourselves. Choose your own candidate and don't worry about a talk show host. I have never understood why some women feel they have to do everything together. We don't all have to go the restroom together and we certainly don't have to think the same. I don't need to have a WOMAN as president - I want a great president. Period. And from what I've seen so far Barack Obama fits the bill more than than Hill !!
maw, New York City, USA
This is still a free country, for now anyway, and Oprah can back whomever she wishes. I credit her with more common sense than most. I enjoy her shows and am interested in her opinions, however, I don't always agree with her but will defend her right to have and voice those opinions. I'm a woman and will not vote for Hillary simply because she's a woman but because, plain and simple, she's a socialist in my opinion. Get off of Oprah's back and let her be Oprah! She didn't get where she is because she's stupid.
Toney, Chester, Va.
Has anyone stopped to think that Oprah may be backing Obama because she knows him, not because he is black. He IS the US Senator from her state(Illinois) and I am sure she has met him many times both before and after his election. I suspect Oprah picked him not because he is black but because she felt he was the best person for the job and he was a friend.
We should all vote on qualifications and issues, race and sex should have nothing to do with our vote. By the way, I am female and not supporting either Obama or Hillary, but I respect Oprah's right to support whoever she wants.
C Kammer, Tucson, AZ
Backing a woman just because she is a woman is not what we should do. Hillary is not the best candidate and settling for the the least is not what we as women need to do. We need to ask ourselves "Who would Jesus want in the office to bring the most change to our country back to where Jesus wants our country to be again. Trust in the Lord and your decision on who would be the best leader for our Christian Nation.
Pat Kolb, Wabasha, MN
Sadly the militant feminists have stirred the pot over this issue, showing their blatant racism AND their sexism.
Sadly, the Democrat Party have been exposed for being so fractious as sexism and racism; and yes I am convinced that senator clinton's campaign (she doesn't deserve the capitalisation) is behind at least some of the sabotage. If senator clinton refuses to condemn the tactics used by some of the more racist, sexist loudmouths like "austaz68", then she is just as disreputable as Ron Paul, the radical running on a campaign that has attracted White supremacists.
I wonder if the feminist movement has attracted White supremacists on top of female supremacists. If so then it clearly shows just how bigoted the gender feminists --- senator clinton's core base --- really truly are.
Brian Mora, Joplin, Missouri (USA)
Obviously she backs Obama because he is black - just ask yourself in the last election who did she back - nobody black was running - she backed no one
Wienigma, Mauston, WI
Obama is by far the best candidate. Edwards is a better candidate. Every other Democratic candidate was better. Hillary was just better known. Anyone who would vote for someone just because of their gender is not intelligent. Apparently many of the people who watch Oprah are not as smart as Oprah. But then we knew that before we ever heard of Barack Obama.
The Clintons have been and continue to be a disgrace to the country. We should NOT be saddled with another Clinton.
"I don't want the pilot's wife flying the plane."said Chris Rock!
JS, Austin, TX
When was the last time Oprah came out in such grand fashion to endorse a candidate? Hmm? People this is not rocket science. Its bigotry. Boths sides of this particular topic are guilty. Disgusting.
David McReynolds, Marietta, GA
No African American of any economic level, should be made to feel guilty, or make any apologies, for supporting their own for any reason. Other ethnic groups have supported their own for years without backlash. I'm more astonished at those African Americans who have complained about not being at the table and refuse to support an African American who seeks to be at the head of it. Besides, Hilary and Bill Clinton spent 8 years in the White House. Their time has come and gone. Obama is real change.
David, Chicago,
is it just me or is voting for Hillary Clinton just because she's a woman just a little bit SEXIST?
Emmy, Cracow,
First Off, As an Independent, I hope Obama does get the Democratic endorsement. I cannot see Hillary winning the presidency even if she does get the democratic nomination. She would lose to John McCain I belive if it came to that.
And as for Britts getting a vote in our political system, you had your chance at that already and you blew it. It's Called the American Revolution. LOL
Andrew, Bismarck, ND, USA
At one point I thought that either Obama or Hillary would make a good president. My thoughts have changedsince witnessing the venom she ,her husband and supporters spew in the pursuit of the White House. She reminds me of a Republican.I would vote for a republican before I'd vote for the Clinton's

The last time I checked America is a free society and freedom of choice is the ultimate gift to those who live here. Those emails are very suspicious. I support Oprah for backing who she believes is the right choice at this point in time in our history, whether or not I support the same candidate as Oprah is irrelevant. I agree with some of the above comments that the "traitor" emails were initiated by a certain campaign group which is disheartening. Oprah's fans are the best fans in the world and they have no hate for anyone. That is why what has been sent by email is very suspicious.
To Oprah - I am proud that you have chosen early the 2008 candidate you believe can lead this country well into the future.
ZB, Foothills, CA
Two brilliant candidates, yet my fellow Yanks seem unable to appreciate the abundance. Reading the comments here, I am sad to say that Bush was exactly the president most of these nimrods deserve...unfortunately, the rest of the world and their fellow citizens are stuck with their ridiculous and dangerous choice. I'd like to be hopeful about the next president, but when it's acceptable for all the candidates from one party to decide that they don't believe in evolution, and the other party has been too skittish to laugh out loud at them, it doesn't bode well for the world. Reading the comments here, it's obvious that we still have a lot of work to do when it comes to both gender and race - it's actually depressing to think that these people vote.

To have the Oprah naysayers to insult my intelligence by thinking I would vote for a presidential candidate simply because that candidate was born with a uterus is 'ludicrious' and 'incredulous' to me! I will be voting for the person who I believe will make the 'BEST' President of these United States, period. And, since I'm not sleeping with, married to, or in need of procreating with any of the presidential candidates, I don't really comprehend where their gender is all that important to my selection. I would strongly advise all the Oprah naysayers to do the same because I'm positive that's what Oprah is doing. Gees females, have you not learned anything after all these years of watching the Oprah Winfrey Show; like how to think for yourself, for instance. Listen to all the candidates, what they are really saying, and then think what sounds right for you. Don't allow anyone to assume they have your vote or to take your vote for granted!
Elaine, Anaheim, California
I have just read an article about women calling Oprah Winfrey a âTraitorâ on her website for being a self starting â free thinking woman and not supporting Hillary Clinton for the sake of her being a woman alone. I really could not believe my eyes! Here is a WOMAN who has done nothing but support and work hard to make the world a better place and YOU (whether you are in earnest or not) turn on this WOMAN who is the personification of what every PERSON should aspire to be.
Now you may think I watch Oprahâs show all the time and read all the books that she suggest â WRONG. However I do admire her as a WOMAN, a woman who has worked hard, created all kinds of avenues that do nothing but help her fellow man. Yes she has got a lot of support from corporations to assist her but who else has done this! Who else spends hundreds of thousands of dollars â millions of dollars of her own to help feed and educate those who will never receive a proper meal or education without Ms. Winfrey? And I am not just talking about the children in Africa (and yet I canât think of any more deserving), Iâm talking about children right here in our own country! I love our country but I have a problem with a government that will spend Trillions EACH YEAR to kill but can not find enough money â during ANY YEAR to educate our young, heal our servicemen, take care of the elderly - who I might add made our country free and what it is today, health care for the needy and feed the poor. The SHAME is not with Oprah Winfrey as a woman it is with those who turn like SNAKES in the night!
Have you forgotten who was involved with the S&L scandals? Hillary Clinton! Who was involved with bad land deals that she profited from and caused the middle man to go to jail and the poor to become poorer and yet being a lawyer had no knowledge of wrong doing? Hillary Clinton! Who parades her mother around during a campaign â but has nothing to do with her for years under normal circumstances? But now Ms. Clinton can USE her mother to her benefit â so again there YOU go ~WASHINGTON AS USUAL~ SINGLE MINDED WOMAN who follow and have trouble thinking for yourselves!
I am a woman! I donât know who I will vote for yet BUT I do know I will NOT vote for Hillary Clinton! The only reason âtheyâ want Hillary in Washington is she is controllable and Mr. Obama is a big question mark. It is time for change in Washington! The only thing I ask each of you to do is â step back â think â and make a GOOD EDUCATED CHOICE and stop the cat fighting and stone throwing â¦. Donât vote for someone on the bases of race, color, creed or GENDER! PLEASE DONâT MAKE ME ASHAME TO BE A WOMAN!
Sue, Delaware, OH
If being "qualified" was important Dubya would still be clearing brush in Texas. One might say that all this horror of the past 8 years can be squarely laid at the door of Dubya groupies. You guys voted him in TWICE - NO WAIT - it wasn't really votes now was it. Well, whatever - we sure as heck do not want more of the same. The job does actually require more than one brain cell and hopefully not one shared with a dog biscuit. Whoever gets in is going to spend years just clearing up this fiasco on every level and rebuilding bridges worldwide. Beats me why anyone would even want the lousy job in the first place but seems to me it will require serious multi-tasking, sweetness and light one minute, and wielding a dangerous handbag the next - all without missing a beat. GOSH! Sounds like just the job for a woman!!!
Su, Dallas, Texas
I am sorry when celebrities use their "power" in our society to effect politics. They are already given too much power in our media. I hope that all Oprah's fans will make their own decisions and not blindly follow her endorsement. I can see already how Hilary Clinton as our president would help women in our society. The effects of sexism are so obvious in how she is being portrayed and criticized. A female president would do so much to change these perceptions and treatment of women of all races in our society.

Thank you, Kathy for saying what so many want to.
Keri, Monterey,
Oprah has always been BLACK and about BLACK. I followed her for years- in hope that she would enlighted all of us on cultural diveristy - but it's not about women it's about BLACK. She rather put a BLACK inexperienced "young" man, than make an educated pick. I could care less what color Hillary or McCain are - can they fix these ridiculous problems our county has?
Chris G, Palm Springs, CA
Too many comments to read so I apologise if this has already been covered but some of the quotes I'm reading are ridiculous. " We actually have a shot of putting a woman in the White House and Oprah backs the black MAN." What kind of person thinks this way? Certainly sexist, possibly racist, undeniably ignorant. If Clinton is the best person for the job then certainly she deserves more votes but to base a decision entirely on gender is no different than basing it on race. Feminists need to stop crying. Oprah can vote for whoever she wants (even if she is wrong).
Edwina Stephens, Albuquerque, USA
I am enjoying seeing these women seeming to auto destruct as a cohesive force. This is payback for the male bashing themes that we often see on Oprah's show, the Lifetime cable channel, television commercials, and movies.
Daniel, Greenwich, Connecticut
Hillary Clinton, John McCain and Rudy Guiliani are by far the most accomplished of all the candidates. But the presidential nominees are determined because of religion, race and gender. What a tragedy!!

It is not the colour of the skin nor the gender which should determine the leader but their principles, ideals, experience, empathy, compassion and other lost values in this selfish, materialistic society of ours.
Education, health, the elderly, the environment, the disadvantaged, infrastructure, community building should be the moot points. Not delving into the personal lives of the candidates and what they did or did not do in the past or said when they were 10 years old.
As the "global policeman" the US cannot afford to make the mistakes of the past 8 years. Beware of candidates beholden to vested interest groups. For a change, pick someone with vision, empathy and compassion. Someone who will lay the foundation for the future generation and provide a moral compass for others to follow.
Good luck as it is a big ask in a land where money over-rides everything and voting is not compulsory.
A. Haque, ACT, Australia
It is sad. For anyone to disrespect her based on her decision of who she honestly thinks is the best choice is upsetting... the fact that they would attack her because she is not supporting a woman because she is a woman is more than a little troubling.
Civil Rights and Feminism has always been about equality, the person best suited for the job based not on race or sex but on ability. Oprah's audience should know better.
Think of it this way... Oprah lives and works in Chicago, the same area where Barack has been politically active and running community organizations for decades. Perhaps in all that time she has come to know the man and the politician, to gain a measure of respect, trust, and belief in him.
How many of those who are attacking her now can say they have the same measure of investment and inspection of HRC before they decided to support her.
D. Stone, Vallejo, CA
What proof does Oprah has that man Obama will be better than Clinton as President? Look at the absolute diaster Bush have made of the entire world, not just America! We most certainly need a woman whose common sense and experience will save us all. Could it be the real issue is that Oprah wants to remain the most important woman in US history whereas Clinton will certainly have that spot if she wins. (ofcourse Mother Angelica will always be thy No.1)
e, chicago, Ils.
I absolutely agree with Daro from Argentat - we should all get a vote in this since we'll have to do business with the person once they're elected.
Please America, think outside of the domestic framework at who is more able to lead the USA into the next century; ideologically, historically, morally?
As Greg Newsome aptly points out:
Was Hillary a top attorney? She has never tried a case in
her career. She was hired because her husband was
governor. She became a Senator the same way.
Vote Obama
...the world does not want to do business with Hillary Clinton!!
---and to clarify my socio-economic breed for those concerned voters in this forum, I am white and female.
Victoria, London,
I want to say this Mr. Obama is a great man ,who someday will be a great president but not yet. We as a country need someone with the experince and creditals to make change and fix this mess we are in. Bring our boys and girls home with the same respect they left with. Someone who gets a little teary eyed when she or he thinks about us. I say lets all get behind Clinton to bring back America
Frances Thomas, Lees summit, MO
Can anyone tell me if voters in the UK encountered the same issues reguarding the election of Margaret Thatcher as PM, and if not why such factors should matter at all in reguards to the rivalry between Hillary & Obama?
Norman Stillwell, Attleborough, UK
Get real everyone. If you vote for someone because they are white, black, male or female and not because of what they stand for and what they can do for you, your companions and your country , you don't deserve a vote! Being a woman does not make me agree with everything every woman says or stands for, I have a mind of my own and make decisions based on fact and my own opinions shouldn't everyone be entitled to do the same? We were given our own minds for a reason!
Clare, Northants, UK
Oprah, endorsed Obama because she thought he was the best candidate. She is not dumb! I am a white woman who cares about feminism too but I put my support behind Obama last summer. The question is: Who will make the best President for the next 4 years!!!
Mary Brueggemann, Decatur,
Showing us that Oprah appears to be much smarter than the women who watch her show. She is backing the best person for the job, while these women support Hillary because she is female. Seems like a stupid basis to elect a future leader, but this is America where your sex, looks, race, what you wear, and who you sleep with all are more important than your policies, experience, and ability to do the job.
Dalton, Toronto, Canada
For years women have claimed that a man's achievements was primarily due to gender and beyond that, they didn't have to do much else to prove themselves worthy of power and success. Why are women committing the same act of blind faith during something so critical as a presidential election? The President of the United States is seen by many outsiders like me as the president of the free world. We understand the impact and significance of this person's ability to bring about changes globally. Someone who can help make the world a better place. This kind of decision should not be gender based. Think ladies, think! Choose the best person for the job even if at the end of the day, you may have to grudgingly admit it's a man!
Lisa Poliah, Marabella, Trinidad and Tobago
If she supported Hillary instead, there would be a segment of the Black community that would call her a "traitor" for supporting the WHITE woman over the BLACK man, just as we have the current complaints of her support of the black MAN over the white WOMAN.
She can't win.
Now she sees why so many people avoid making their political views public.
Matt, Boonville, Missouri, USA
If you choose a candidate by what color, sex, political party, or even religion they are, it shows how shallow you really are. If you do, clearly you donât care what happens to America. If Clinton, Obama, or Romney becomes President, then we are all in trouble. I better learn the Canadian national anthem.
George, NY,
clearly, it is ridiculous to suggest oprah is a traitor for not voting for someone of her own sex - apparently, these feminists don't want equality, they want sexism. that said, whilst it would be nice to think oprah backed obama on the issues, it is impossible to believe that if he were a white man she would be backing him publicly. then again, what kind of idiot would vote according to the advice given by a tv personality?
the sad thing is that the neither of the two democratic front-runners represents a broad constituency. which is why neither will be president.
anyone can suggest they want to see "change for the better"; the problem is obama offers no practical solutions and has no experience. as for hillary, her only concern is getting into power. why would anyone trust a single word that comes out of her mouth (or out of the mouths of her campaign workers)? the democrats really aren't doing themselves (or anyone else) any favours with these candidates.
jem, london, uk
Winfrey needs to shut up and go home. She, for some self delusional reasons that only her ego understands, believes people are waiting for her advice on what candidate to vote for.
And the women that do follow her? they need to get off the sofa and think for themselves.
Howard, Savannah,
OK-When are all of you who say the 'Machine" isn't involved going to wise up? As mentioned in an early post here the back room Clinton machine knows how to ruin "ANYONE" including the Oprah. Oprah is a Black Women. Was she black before she was a women OR a women before she was black? Tis a quandry! Hey! Actually if you want the "Machine" back at 1600 and the east coast media and elites choosing the Hill-Billy connection again go ahead and let them USE you all over again for another 8 years. Enjoy the ride and carring this twosome into dubious American history. You ALWAYS deserve the candidate you vote for don't you?????
ruralguy, Maple Grove, WI/USA
Typical reaction from the left. Take a little heat; abandon your position. No conviction of her beliefs - just cut and run for the tall grass.
Mel, Portsmouth, usa/ohio
This just goes to show you that you can never please people so you have to do what is right and follow your own heart. Oprah has a right to vote for whatever candidate she chooses just as we do. You people need to stop playing the race card and the gender card. Get over it and get a life.
Ashley, Alpharetta, GA
I think it's funny that anyone would consider either Obama or Clinton. Any one of the Repulican candidates has more experience than those two combined. I think those leaning that way are just looking for something different. They don't realize that different doesn't mean better, expecially in this case.
Chas, Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, USA
In my view, none of the present candidates are qualified to hold the office of President of the United States. All are politicians, none are statesmen. Not one is discussing the extremely serious challenges we as a nation are soon facing, shortages of crude oil from global peak oil production, an unjustifiable (and in my opinion) illegal, immoral and wasteful war, a debauched currency, out of control spending by government at all levels, widening deficits, absolutely no will to enforce our national borders with nations who are truly not our friends, a $73 Trillion dollar liability in the form of Medicare, SS and federal debt, etc. We don't need nor afford national healthcare or giveaway programs. Our economy and society is wasting away from the sheer ignorance, arrogance, corruption and lack of leadership from the political class. To vote for a person who shares a gender or racial component is childish. We need the best person we can find. As of yet, they are nowhere to be found.
Alex, Los Angeles, CA
Obama seems like he would bring dignity, decency, and honesty to the presidency, and I'm a republican! While I would of course rather see a conservative in office, I can accept a liberal if I believe they are honorable. Just the thought of the Clintons lying and cheating their way back into the White House makes me want to weep!
Charlene, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Any voter who is given a chance to back the party of thier choice should seize it. I'm guessing Oprah Winfrey has weighed up her choices for both candidates and beleives a country run by Obama would be more beneficial to her - disregardng race or gender.
Her fans are foolish to beleive that she should go with one candidate based solely on gender, in the same way they are foolish to beleive she's supporting obama simply because of his race. If her fans don't like her choice than it's up to them to ignore it, they have an "off" switch on thier televisions, don't they? Or has American society now made it compulsory for veiwers to have thier televisions permanently on?

Ray, Can't you just use the same flag you used in Vietnam?
Christopher , London , UK
Oprah is right. Obama is "The One".
Hillary has 35 years of experience doing what? Inquiring mines want to know. She is the same OLD guard. This old monarchy got to stop, Bush(4yrs),Clinton(8yrs), Bush(4yrs), Clinton(8yrs?). Over half of my lifetime - PLEASE PEOPLE see the light.
My father use to say, "If you want to keep getting what you're getting, keep doing what you're doing".
Tec, White Plains, USA - NY
Ray from Florida, Daro said he was a Brit, not French. Regardless, you should show respect to your betters.
Whomever you elect, lets hope its someone with more than two brain cells to rub together, doesn't start wars for personal revenge for his Daddy, and isn't in thrall to big business and rich lobbyists... not likely given all the candidates are both American and politicians.
Phil, London,
I think Oprah should keep her political views to herself. There will be a lot of women who will vote for Obama just because Oprah is backing him. These women will have no idea on what he stands for or have any political view of their own, they will vote solely based on what Oprah says and does. This is so unfortunate. Oprah has lost my vote.
Stephanie, Indianapolis, Indiana
Some people just don't get it. After seven years of G.W. Bushy Breath we have a chance to have a person in the White House that is concerned about Health Care and many other things that the Bushy Administration hasn't given a hoot about. I believe in H. Clinton as I did her husband. As for the person from the UK talking about Rice well lets send Rice to the UK and let her become the Prime Minister and see how well they like it. Rice is just as dirty as Bushy man. The big O has every right to support whomever she chooses but the other O is not as qualified and if he is elected I am sure we shall have yet another 4 years of war and economic ruin. So when hitting Oprah in your posting wars - remember this country is founded on freedom and the right to vote for anyone you wish to vote for. Give this great lady a break and take your midol.
R. Dunh, Raleigh, NC
I can not beleve this woman has you all so fooled.
Frank Grove, Greensboro, NC
Hilary Clinton, has the chance to become the First Woman
President of the United States Of America.
A vote for Mrs. Clinton could fundamentally change the lives of Americans, for the better, especially the working class.
Remember, at least 25% of Americans do Not have health
insurance.
I am sure the lives of all classes would be improved under
her leadership.
Jock, Corby., England
This is America, Oprah can back whomever she wishes - doesn't she have that right? I'm a woman and would
never vote for someone just because they're female.
Norma, Richmond, Virginia
lol now who's playing the race card?
Eddie, Chicago,
To the bigoted women who want a woman at all costs, I ask simply this; how long will it be before the next woman is elected President, if Hillary Clinton is the first?
Be careful what you wish for......
Dave, Sheffield,
Whats racist about supporting the one you think fit for the job, just because Clinton is awoman does not mean she will be a better for the job how cruel to slate someone for having a opinion.....ridicuous....
Julie Whiteley, halifax, uk
No person should ever be elected to, or given, any post merely because of gender or race. That any voter may cast their vote for a candidate for the presidency of the US purely on the basis of either is beyond belief!
What would these people do if Condoleezza Rice threw her hat into the ring of this circus?
Marie, UK.
Marie, Worcestershire, UK
Here here to the person above who mentions her time in the white house it doesnt qualify her to run a ountry..it would be like me saying i live with an electrician so i am able to rewire the house....leave Oprah alone thats what a free world is about it having an opinion..
Julie Whiteley, halifax, uk
Hahaha!! I love it, Texas Pete!! You made my day!
Angela, Phoenix, AZ
Ray obviously has difficulties reading his own language, as Daro is British, and therefore most definitely does not qualify as a frog. As for the white flag, I suggest you go and read about the battle of Yorktown, which, and I will quote Wikipedia as an independent source, involved more French than American troops...
Thomas, London,
I love you Laura, it makes me feel that I'm _not_ the only one still alive in the U.S. with a bit of sense.
Nick, Berryville, VA, USA
It scares me that these morals choose gender over a qualified candidate... This country will go down fast with a comunist in office
laura, ft lauderdale,
Well, daro from Argentat, France, we won't be giving you frogs the vote any time soon, but if we ever need an opinion on the best shade of white for a flag of surrender, we'll give you a call.
Ray, West Palm Beach, Florida, USA
The point is moot since a Republican will thankfully be elected.Adios,Libs.
texas Pete, NY, USA
Crying about experience (like some of the comments here)as a ploy to disqualify or discredit is a very common job market experience. I never thought it has ever been that relevant in politics. What special experience of being a president of the United States do other candidates have? What experience does the disastrous British current Foreign Minister possess to be the foreign minister of Great Britain?
On the main issue of Oprah, I think she went with the flow and forgot that Obamania is supposed to be a mainly White hypocrisy disease as the media forbids Blacks from supporting Obama. Surely a White Oprah coming out the way the Black one did for Obama would have raised less eyebrows.
I now admire Obama as a person, but I still remain concerned about the genuineness of the entire Obama hysteria. It seems to be more about feeling good and or displaying a race blind image rather than supporting a candidate for his visions and ideas of a better society.
John Iteshi, London, UK
As a Brit. I don't have any say either but it would seem basic to elect the person best qualified for the job - whoever that may be.
One thought on Obama however. Maybe he's the best qualified to heal the massive Bush-created rift with the Muslim world that so affects us all.
Basically, I feel the election of the American President is far too important to leave to Americans, we should all get a vote. The sleaze and misinformation tacked onto candidates by rivals is utterly nauseating and the constant allegations of voter intimidation and voting machine manipulation make a mockery of their much vaunted Democracy.
Thanks. It's the sort of Democracy we can manage without.
daro, Argentat, France
Wow Hard to believe so many ignorant people on here talking about the canidates for our presidancy,
Really now does anyone really want Bill Clinton anywhere near the white house? Yes I know that it is Hillary running but she already had her terms in the office and now wants a little more. Really people even though it is obvious that I do not want Hillary in the white house I at least have reasons other than her Gender. I just do not believe she is the right person for the job. Oprah can back whoever she wants along with the rest of the famous people with hardly any education or care for the economy. Just because someone can act or keep you entertained for a hour all day does not make them right, Vote with who you feel is right not who (insert celeb name here) tells you to vote for, They made millions and complain and your going to listen to them, Think about it.
John , Chicago , IL
Its refreshing to see people with logic are starting to reply to racist articles (Adam from Riverside). I have to say Obama has one thing going for him that few can hold to. He hasn't taken back something he has said. I find it refreshing, as your response.
Timothy, Honolulu, HI
It completely baffles me how anyone could possibly vote for someone because they share the same sex, or the same racial background (on this latter point it's laughable that blacks support Obama since he is not even black!). These women against Oprah have shown themselves to be stupid, unthinking, and unintelligent. Anyone who supports Obama because his father was Kenyan is likewise. Is America truly as stupid as it's making out during this race?
Helen E., London, UK
Oprah Winfrey mirrors that of a scorn woman out for revenge on the very people who have given her fame. She uses gender and race to promote a cause that is littered with silent hate.
spatch, Fitchburg, usa
Anyone who bases their choice for president on an endorsement by ANY entertainment personality is a dolt and shouldn't be given the privledge of voting. Oprah doesn't have fans, she has sheep. I watch TV, movies to be entertained not to be told how to live my life.
DM, Orlando,
Some women are against Oprah for not backing a woman. How sexist is that? Are the women of America saying that there should be a woman in the Whitehouse, regardless of how good she is? It seems to be a strange situation where the lection of the next President of the USA will come down to whether more women than men vote. Hurrah for democracy, US style.
David Leslie, Perth, Scotland
Oprah and Obama has one thing in common and it isn't race. It is Africa. Why should we want a Pro African president who doesn't salute the flag or say the pledge? And remember, all dems had to sign agreements to support whoever wins this Primary Election. So, either way, with a Dem we loose. Send more emails to Oprah, see if she thinks Islam has room for a woman like her. LOL
N C , Ashland, Kentucky USA
Oprah Winfrey is a black militant in a party dress who has all the class money can buy. I am among MANY viewers who "turned off" Oprah a couple of years ago. She wears thin. We refuse to buy her magazine also. She has one agenda: HER OWN!
Read my lips, Oprah: Hussein Barak Obama will NEVER be elected president of the US.
RREEDy
RREEDY, Salem VA, USA/TN
"Sheâs choosing her race over her gender.â
This is such a stupid, asinine comment, I couldn't even finish the rest of the article. It insinuates that making an endorsement based on gender is better than making an endorsement based on race; that sexism is more appropriate than racisim. In reality, neither of these is appropriate and it's disgusting to see that people actually think they matter.
How about we ignore both race and gender, and focus on what is really important when choosing our next President?
Adam, Riverside, California
Was Hillary a top attorney? She has never tried a case in
her career. She was hired because her husband was
governor. She became a Senator the same way.

Winfrey is supporting the best candidate, eschewing the science-hating Republicans and preventing the ascension of a freedom-hating Clinton dynasty.
Bob, Hanson,
Come on people, give her a little more credit than that for her intellect, reasoning and judgement. She did not become a billionaire and one of the most powerful people in the world by winning the lottery. She is far smarter than to make her endorsement soley on gender or sex, and well aware of the risks and consequences of either choice. She could also have sat it out and endorsed no one, but chose to endorse Barrack and to join him on the campaign trail. She is endorsing him b/c she thinks he is the best choice to be our next President. Some of you conspiracy theorists need to get a life and spend more time researching your own choice and making an intelligent choice in your own vote and less time offering poorly thought out hyperbole.
Hal, ATL, USA/GA
I think this whole issue is a farce - can't these complainers see that you should choose a president on merit? Surely they aren't so ignorant as to choose the candidate that is simply the same sex or race as them - let alone go public with it? I think Oprah should be allowed to back the candidate of her choice (for her own reasons) and should not give in to the mob of feminist whiners who are voting for Clinton because they believe they are still getting a raw deal in life. Good luck America
Sarah, Bristol, UK
I completely disagree with though who believe experience is required to be president. How much experience did Abraham Lincoln have? John F. Kennedy? We need someone with as little experience inside the beltway if we want an effective leader. We've seen what our congress has done for us, and now they have lower ratings than the President! Do we really want an influential person from that worthless club?
T.O., Seattle,
Michelle Swan: I read your post with stunned shock! Do you actually live in the USA? What is the % of black population? How many years did we allow slavery? Do you know what is meant by "minority?" Do you realize how many black teachers we have? How many black police officers; black nurses, black doctors, black administrators; black councilmen; black mayors; black agency directors; black lawyers; black judges; black professors; black CEOs; black athletes; black movie stars; black musicians; black generals? Do you realize that we have a BLACK SECRETARY OF STATE? Can you show me ANY OTHER COUNTRY where ANY minority shows identical gains??? I rarely comment on a poster's lack of ability to see issues with clarity; but, do you realize that there is ZERO evidence for your claim? Do you know what it means to make a statement that can be PROVEN as untrue? You have slandered tens of millions of Americans who only wish you well, and have voted to protect your future; shame!
Margo West, Portland, OR
Any "feminist" who backs Obama is NOT A FEMINIST! Failing to back a woman lawyer, 8 year US Senator, 8 years as First Lady of the USA, and multiple terms as First Lady of Arkansas, in favor of a 1 year US Senator, is fraud! (Obama has been in the Senate for 2 years, but since that was his stepping stone to the White House, he doesn't even have a SINGLE YEAR IN THE SENATE.) Where is his "experience?" Where is his "superior judgment?" Where is his "BLIND AMBITION?" OK, well we found his BLIND AMBITION, so I guess that one out of three isn't bad.
Margo West, Portland, OR
So by being a white guy, by their logic I should not support Obama or Hillary, but I should stick with only white men. Got it! Thanks for educating me in diversity and freedom of choice. That's too bad because I was thinking of voting democrat this year, but I guess I'll have to go republican. Even if he is a mormon, at least we're both white guys!
I'm still waiting for my "the Man" card to arrive in the mail so I can start keeping all the minorities and women from achieving success.
T.O., Seattle,
Hillary was on the road to her coronation, when her limo hit a pothole in the road called Barack Obama. Personally, I don't want a weepy old hag as my Commander in Chief. The first time Putin yells at Hillary, she'll get all teary-eyed, and the game will be over.
C Brandon, Sarasota, FL
Race and sex should not be the focal points of a presidential election, neither should religion. Do only women support Hillary? Do only 'Blacks' support Obama? Do only Mormons etc. We support the candidate most likely to achieve what's best for America.
Joe, Baltimore, USA
Democrats assume women are 'followers' as shown by their continuous support of Bill Clinton. Oprah made the mistake that her 'followers' would fall in line with the Obama charm....wrong!
As a matter of fact, statistically, the higher educated a woman is the more likely she is to vote Republican.
Vince Hugh, Atlanta, Ga
Ok, I won't vote for either Hillary and or Obama. Not because of their race or sex but because both want to turn America into a high tax EuroSocialist Nanny state. Neither one has any idea how to run this country. Dear Libs, you had 40 years to screw up the country and you have done a good job...No More

Just like the ugly toad to claim a victory when
Obama got more delegates. Delegates get you the nomination, Toad.
Dick Tuck, Warwick,
Who cares what Oprah thinks anyway? She is one person with one opinion. Big deal.
SGA, Tampa, USA/FL
I think that Oprah is entitled to vote for anyone she likes. The only problem that I have is that I have never thought is was a good idea for such public entertainers to endorse anyone. That kind of endorsement will lead some people to vote for a candidate that they know nothing about. Voting a certain way because a celebrity says you should is ridiculous.
Patty Russo, Saint Petersburg, Florida, USA
It's insulting to think a woman should automatically vote for another woman. We aren't cattle. Any woman who follows the herd without doing her own thinking is an embarrassment. I personally won't vote for Hillary - and I wish I could take back the two votes I gave to Bill. I don't trust either one of them.
Connie, Kansas City, KS
someone commented that theres never been even such a chance for a women president, sorry but theres never been a black president , i believe oprah is just as passionate and faithful in Obama,as she would be supporting anything else she does, and lets not forget the things she has done, the really GREAT things guys!!!!!!
Amber, Brisbane,Queensland,
Sarah in Chicago is absolutely right. This is not about race or gender. Character is a much bigger factor. Oprah, God bless her, has the courage and character to call it as she sees it; and the insight and experience to see through the hype.
Mark P, Sanger, CA
Does this mean because I am a woman I am supposed to vote for Hillary ?....I thought we are supposed to be educated about our vote for President and choose the candidate we feel will be the best President...It is very scary that people vote based on either sex or race.
Maria, Stamford,
Oprah brought us Dr. Phil so how can she go wrong?? HA!
liknmylife, Washington DC, USA
Oprah chose who she thought was the best candidate. What is the problem? Race and Gender has nothing to do with her choice. Everyone who assumes she chose Obama on racial grounds is denying the fact that he is an very credible candidate. Stop the racial/identity nonsense - it's 2008!
Rem, New York, NY
Give me a break. If she had endorsed Clinton, African Americans would say she was a "traitor." Call me crazy, but maybe she just thinks Obama is the best candidate
Sarah, USA ,
It's sad that we have to come down to race and gender. African Americans would like to have an African American in White House the same as women would like a woman.
As a non-American and a woman I feel that Americans haven't come up with the right woman to fit the position.
Also blaming Oprah is not only
spiteful, but shows that the people attacking her are biased and one-sided.
Valerie J Huff, Rockville, MD USA
Please, please, please, Let's face it. For all of us .it's me, me ,me. Oprah is no different ,if it pushes her agenda then she is for Obama, if not she retreats to the shadows. Have some spunk Oprah, get out and campaign for your candidate.
Dick West
Dick West, Westfield, NJ
Wow. I didn't realize that Americans were so shallow. But I guess I should've known better...
Hannah, Northwood,
The Clinton "Secret Police" are behind this effort to discredit an American icon. Hopefully, Oprah won't abandon Obama under pressure from the Clintonites.
Peter, Seattle, WA
If Obama is elected President, he'll be a guest on Oprah's show. That's how it works.
Phil, Glen Ellyn, Illinois
I think Oprah is a wonderful person. She has done so much to help people less fortunate than her self, regardless of their color, race or sex. This is just dirty Clinton politics. Clinton politics is anger and to attack people who don't agree with you or do what you want. Obama is different and all they can do to attack him is lie and twist the truth. As a white female over 40 I will cross party lines to vote against Hillary if she wins the nomination. If this is the experience Hillary has I want no part of it.
Lauren, San Francisco, California
Oprah projects herself as one who pushes the cause for women in need. In the end; however, her cause to push the Black agenda is more compelling for her. After doing so, the backlash has likely made her rethink her public endorsement. After all, the almighty dollar is the most compelling of all.
Valentina, New York, USA/NY
If Oprah were caucasian, people might not be saying these things about her. Could it be that it is as she says, that she is supporting the one whom she believes will do the best? Knowing Oprah, it isn't about race and gender at all. It is about hope for our future, being global ciitizens, and compassionate ones at that.
mary, DeKalb, IL
Clinton or Obama will never win, they just get each other out of the way. Clinton, to much baggage and Obama, to new.
bige houska, omaha,
i feel Obama and Hillary are losers, why don`t you people get a life??
ron, east norwalk , connecticut
Neither gender nor race is a valid reason for a person to be our president. We need a person of character, integrity, leadership and commitment to our Constitution. Let that person be a purple woman or a pink man, real qualifications matter. Gender and race are completely irrelevant.
Katherine Harms, Baltimore, MD, USA
If race, gender, hope, etc. are major factors in determining your choice to be president, then heaven help us all. Whatever happened to examining the candidate's record and stands on the issues that are of concern to you?
Douglas Thomas, Dalton, GA
Oprah, you go girl. I'm a republican as is my right, and I'm also - dare I say it - a man. Before anything else, you are an American, and we Americans have the right to express our views.
Roger, Phoenix,
simple question,
"would anyone follow Hillary if she had not been married to Bill?
mb, leices,
It goes to show that some feminists are just as intolerant and hateful as some religious extremists. Oparah has a choice, and I am quite glad she chooses the man she agrees with.
If it is race related thats fine too, When in US history have women been enslaved (and i a mean 100% unquestionably, shackled, and sold). I think its fine it may be because she identifies stronger with race than gender.
Besides, i wouldnt be surprised if the one who posted the "traitor" comment was such an extreme feminist that she hated all and any men, regardless.
Evan from the GTA, GTA, Canada
I'm a senior, white, female who recognized the potential in Obama when he spoke at the Democrat National Convention in 2004. I'm also a republican who just became an independent.
Voting for Hillary because she is a woman is asinine. Just as asinine as voting for Obama because he is black.
He has what this country is desperate for, and that's someone who can inspire unity, hope and optimism. Hillary Clinton brings more polarization to an already heavily divided Nation.
Obama can appreciate good qualities in members of the opposing party and work with them for the good of all Americans. That's a quality I look for when choosing a candidate. Unfortunately for this country, most voters see that as some form of treason.
Obama has also expressed a desire to work with this Nation's enemies instead of alienating them even further with rhetoric and intimidation, which by the way, hasn't proven fruitful.
Experience isn't necessarily an indicator of good judgment. Our current government is loaded down with experienced politicians who seem to 'get it wrong' more often than right.
RVT, Paris, KY
I am furious at Oprah for endorsing Obama. I would have had more respect for her if she ran for president herself.
Deborah , Long Island, NY
I feel it is time to have a woman in office. And I agree that Oprah failed her women fans big time........We women need to stand together, this country has been managed by men long enough.
Robyn, Middletown, OH
PLEASE AMERICA...think before you vote for a president. Its important that people with an IQ over 70 vote for someone for many reasons, not just because they happen to be female, black , for or against abortion, gay rights and all the other one issue reason someone thinks is more important then the issues that all Americans are concerned about. National security, the economy, crime, education, health care, the elderly. Please look at ALL issues. not just your single minded favorite.
ken, harrisburg, pa
I'm a 43-year-old woman AND a minority, and I sure don't want Hillary in the White House! Nobody should vote for a president based on gender OR race but on their qualifications. I think it is terrific that Hillary Clinton is running for president; it is great that we live in a country(and a time) where a woman can be taken seriously as a presidential candidate, but I do not feel Senator Clinton is that person. For one thing, as a Republican, I fear that the plans she has for universal health care, though admirable, will end up with Americans paying higher taxes to support her plan. Oprah Winfrey has always been there for women's causes(but isn't it all really humanitarian causes??)but if she felt that Barack Obama was the best qualified candidate, then so be it. Why should she be forced to endorse Hillary Clinton merely based on her gender? If Obama was endorsed based on race(as is hinted at) then is it not the same thing as some women wanting Oprah to support Hillary based on gender?
Alma, Whittier, CA USA
First of all Obama is not just black. He is white too. He is also a Muslum by birth whether he likes it or not.
Hillary is not the right woman for the office. She has proven what she is and that is a cheat; liar and thief. I wouldn't want her walking my dog.
Who knows really why Oprah is doing this? I just don't agree.
peaches1, Houston, TX
How can Obama represent all of the people of USA when he attends a church that is for blacks only and whose allegiance is firstly to Africa?
D Shaw, Derby, England
Oh please. Oprah is backing Obama because they both have something in common that Hillary knows nothing about; starting with nothing, working hard and becoming a success in their own right. Hillary rode Bill's coattail's to her victory in NY and now is hoping it will get her into the Oval Office. She got nothing but free PR for 8 years during her dutiful and loving husband's time in office and then towards the end, milked the sympathy train for even more press and support. Vomit!
Thanks to all that, she became senator of a state she never lived in and now she's become rich white Manhattan! She doesn't identify with any women I know. Oprah can see through all that!
Sarah, Chicago, Illinois
Here we go again! Women for women, blacks for blacks. If I vote for a white MAN because he is white, whew! What a sexist racist dog am I! LOOK AT THE ISSUES. I DO. DO YOU?
Louis, Cumming, Georgia
Opera has the right to give her political opinion and people have the right to reject them and blackball them in the future. But please keep in mind that it's about who will do what is best for us people.
arthur Anderson, mootown, WI
Somebody tell me how it is that Hillary is "qualified" to be the president? Sure she lived in the White House for 8 years, but she had no official job there. The pastry chef also lived there but he's not saying he could be president. What if the wife of the Dallas Cowboys' quarterback decided that since she had been "with the team" for so many years, and was at all the games, she now thinks she is qualified to become the quarterback next year. Geive me a break, Hillary is no more qualified than I am - maybe less so.
Jackie, Jacksonville , Florida
every single comment that mentions race or gender is simply feeding back into the racist/sexist ideology that has perpetuated itself in our culture for centuries. we finally have a race with both a black man and a woman in which they both have a solid chance at winning and here we are deteriorating back into mud slinging racist sexist nonsense. is it not possible that Oprah simply prefers the politics of Obama? as a white man voting for Obama, I can honestly say it's because he's a breath of fresh air. This is America and 24 years (Bush I, Bill Clinton, Bush II, and then Hillary Clinton) of the same two families running this country is ENOUGH. Let's try something new and maybe we'll get new results.
Jacob Mitchell, Portland, Oregon
It is depressing to say the least that a persons gender, or color would influence not only a vote, but the perception of a person who supports that person. We are all HUMAN, the only traitors are the ones who lie, mislead, and behave in anyway they think they need to just to get elected. Our politicains serve the dollar and the people who make them, and the people who support their campaigns. What's it going to take to change this, to make people see through their poor acting?
g, LA, CA
To be fair, while there are democrats who are voting for Obama because he's black or for Clinton because she's a woman and that some people refuse to vote for a candidate because they happen to be black or a woman...
...there are a large number of Republicans who refuse to vote for Romney because he's a Mormon and back Huckabee because he's a "true" (note the sarcasm) Christian.
Folks, a person's color, gender or religious affiliation shouldn't matter when voting for a President. Their experiences, positions, policies and leadership skills are the things that should matter.
Jared, San Diego, California
The funny thing is...the democrat party is the party of the middle and lower class, all people are equal, the same and there is no difference between men, women, and race. Huh. This is sad, there are people out there that will vote for HIllary because she is a women, and there will be people voting for Obama because he is black...there is such a pathetic firestorm over it that it sickens me. Just look at issues, and if you want to look deeper, find out what Hillary's EXECUTIVE experience is, she has none, but her husband does. Same for Obama, none at all. You want change? Look for the ones that have the EXECUTIVE experience, the only one of the Dems that had that is out of the race.
Mike, Hornell, NY USA
I'm sure there's some way to take women like that seriously. Let's think. Hmmmm? Nope...guess I was wrong. Can't take them seriously. Oh...wait.....I forgot. There 'is' one thing that's serious. Those gals have the right to vote. Scary serious.
Randy, glendora, ca/USA
The point isn't who she endorsed; it's that she should have stayed out of politics. I don't want any celeb telling me how to vote even one as respected as Oprah. She's really put her foot in her mouth on this one. No matter who she picked she was going to burn half of her audience. I know my mother and my aunt have stopped watching her and my mom has canceled her subscription to Oprah's magazine. I assume Oprah is at at a point her life where ratings and more money probably don't matter.
Sara, Columbia, USA/SC
Dr. Martin Luther King said "judge people NOT by the color of their skin but on the content of their character". He could have changed the word "judge" by the word "vote"!! Obama is only half black, his mother being WHITE, and it was she who brought him up after his BLACK father abandoned the family!! I have nothing against Obama personally; however, to vote for him to be President in such fateful times just because he has his father's skin color is dangerous and furthermore RIDICULOUS !. After having said the above, I am a Republican, so would not vote for neither Obama nor Hillary.

Oprah is a US Citizen. It's not only her RIGHT but her DUTY to back the candidate she believes to be the best one. She shouldn't answer (or rather pander) to her public's wishes unless she herself is running for office. It demeans the entire system if she does. Good for Oprah in choosing to back a candidate in which she believes, not just the one she thinks her public wants her to support!
Cynthia, Buffalo,
It is ridiculous to feel that Oprah is obligated to back Hillary simply because she is a woman, regardless of whether or not she is qualified to run this country. And those who are voting for Hillary on that basis alone are a disgrace to the rest of us women who are using their brains to make an informed decision instead of being blinded by a feminist grudge.
Tracy, Huntington, NY
Maybe this isn't true. Maybe the so called backlash is from another candidate and its like a plant in an audience but who would do such a thing??
maddie, Charlotte, USA /NC
I hope you will still campaign for Obama. He is honest and sincere and is what will help bring our country together.
I am sure the Clintons got their people to scare you with many letters to steer you away from him.
I have always admired you for standing up for what, and who you thought was right for all of us.
Please don't disappoint many of us!

Don , Aurora Colorado,
You shouldn't be voting on race or gender issues that is shallow and irrelevant - You need to see the president as an IT because IT will be running our country and we need to have the best IT in charge with policy issues that are going to benefit the country, not destroy it. Vote on ISSUES not on gender or race.....

No, but you know they will.
Ramona, Amherst, Wisconsin
Shame on any woman for supporting a candidate for president for no other reason than she has no penis. So be it. If she wins, I pray she has balls.
Steve Hargrove, Vienna,
this goes to show how dumb these female oprah lovers are but more specifically, the usa for breading such stupidities
they want her to blindly follow a candidate simply because that person is a female
how about the men in the US blindly vote for male candidates to make sure a female never gets the job...would these girls appreciate that? no? well why not? its the same thing they are doing and than calling oprah a traitor for not doing
maybe she doesnt think that clinton is best for the job
these stupid female extremists (thats right, extremists) are traitors to the human race, they would rather help eachother out instead of helping in general or doing the right thing in general
phillip, melbourne, australia
Oprah Winfrey is just like any other American citizen, she has a right to support whoever she wants for president. Why has anyone given her or any other celebrity such great power of influence when it comes to politics. I agree that Ms. Winfrey is a talented woman but she hasn't demonstrated any political skill, to my knowledge. Oprah is entitled to her opinion just as you are entitled to yours. Anyone who is swayed by her decision isn't qualified to vote.
Clara, Cincinnati, Ohio

Hate Oprah? So typical of offended liberals. They give us speech codes, protected groups, professional victims, visceral hatred of those who do not support their dogma and a desire to hurt those in who demonstrate opposition to their oh so grand plans.
True Conservatives don't display the negative emotions and especially don't display the hate that appears even on these pages. However, liberals do.
I know which moral persuasion, conservativism or liberalism, really cares about people and which really cares about appearances, ceremony and symbolism. However, liberals can't or won't.

there is definitely a strong indication that black voters are voting for barrack obama. for a women's advocate such as winfrey to endorse obama over a qualified candidate such as clincton is really worrying. it could soon be seen by the majority white voters as a dangerous place for the country to go. this country has a history of quid pro quo in its politics. what is obama expected to do for all these black votes ?
john, manchester,
Don't you think that Oprah might just be voting her conscience and feels that Barack Obama is the right candidate to help flush the stale poitics out of Washington? By stating that she should vote for Clinton because she is a woman is as ridiculous as suggesting that she supports Obama because he is of her race. What a hypocritical statement to make and only serves to illustrate why you are aligned with the Clintons.
Terry, Acworth, Georgia
Oprah has the right to back any candidate she chooses. For business purposes it may be better if she keeps her choice to herself because all her viewers are not Obama supporters; in fact all of her viewers are not democrats.
Jerry, Savannah, Ga,
Quote: "a reader called austaz68 said she 'cannot believe that women all over this country are not up in arms over Oprahâs backing of Obama. For the first time in history we actually have a shot at putting a woman in the White House and Oprah backs the black MAN. Sheâs choosing her race over her gender.'â
Wow, I guess we might save a lot of money and time by just picking our leaders by the census than by voting ... Are there any people left who think anymore?
JP, Cleveland, US/OH
The Democrats have pigeon holed people into groups for years...gay, black, Hispanic, feminist, pro-abortion, animal rights, all of them with their own agenda. And the different groups seem to feel their way and their beliefs are the only way. So Oprah, offends the feminists who want a woman President, no matter if she is qualified or not...gender is the issue, and these people don't feel she has a right to stray. In other words, Oprah, according to the feminists, is not entitled to back the candidate of her choice. If she wants to remain in good standing with the feminists, then she must back Hillary. It's identity politics.
daisey, phoenix,
Reading all these angry comments about Oprah is just an attempt to scare her away from supporting Obama.
Saying Oprah is racist is a load of rubbish.
I suspect one lobby group could be behind these evil actions to scare her and to make her fans think they are against her.
Peter Darlington, Southampton,
How is voting for Hillary just because she is a woman any different than voting for a man just because he is a man. Its sexism, pure and simple. I am a woman and I hope someday to see a woman in the white house in my lifetime, but i would only vote for her if she was the best candidate. Hillary isn't it. The thought of Bill and Hillary back in the white house sickens me.
Suze, Texas, USA
Amen! to Dawn in West Palm Beach.
Take note of who's playing the race, gender (and class-envy) cards. It's NOT the Conservatives. The LIBERALS are the ones noticing color, gender and class before substance, record & ideology!

This was worth repeating...
"The three major Democratic candidates, Clinton, Obama, and Edwards appeal to prejudice: gender bias or sexism, racism, and classism. The three major Republican candidates, McCain, Romney, and Hucklebee, appeal to ideas: defense or national security, the economy, social or moral issues."
Macksfield, Hudsonville, MI
I have not watched Oprah since her swing to Obama. I will
not watch her again. I don't care if Obama is black, that is not
the issue. He was elected as Senator of Illinois and he has
not represented us at all. All he has done is campaign for
another office when he has not fulfulled his duties as the
Senator. What will he run for or from if he is elected as the
Pres.????????
Harvey, Springfield, IL
âThe moment a star opens their mouth and endorses one candidate, they alienate half their viewership.â
The minute a CANDIDATE opens his/her mouth and talks religion, or race, or gender he/she is disenfranchising a great many AMERICANS.
Why not speak to issues that affect us all - economics, immigration, science and education, etc. instead more platitudes feigned as intellect; rational discussion replaced with emotional outbursts
Most stars/celebrities are not worth the time spent to hear the sound bite
Gregory, New York, NY
Actually, as far as Hillary being more experienced than Obama, (along with being the smartest woman in the world), she failed the DC bar exam, got a job with Rose Law Firm (her husband was the Governor, for pete's sake), took over the education system in Arkansas and put them in 49th place (they did NOT improve), and has not initiated one significant piece of legislation since becoming senator of New York. Lots of pork and earmarks for New York, but important legislation...zip, zero, nada. Her health care task force was a debacle and her suggestions to fix the current problem with the mortgage industry will destroy it. Even business magazines have acknowledged that her plans to save the mortgage industry will have a negative impact. The one thing that seems to appeal to the masses, is her promise to take from the rich and give to those more deserving. What constitutes rich? Anyone heard a number yet? Could be $40,000 a year. Who decides?
daisey, phoenix,
Why is it considered okay for women to support a woman canditate because of gender, for blacks to support a black because of race, etc. etc. ad nauseum. If there is any hint if a white male supporting in kind due to self-identity, well that just isn't (and really shouldn't be) tolerated. The first two are examples of sexism / racism just as clear as the last. It is kind of funny though, seeing the Democratic party implode because of behavior commonly and errantly assigned to conservatives. Always, remember - Republicans ended slavery, and the Democratic party has tolerate the presence of KKK Grand Dragon Robert Bryd.
james, ft wayne,
Amazing, women angry at Oprah because she's not backing a woman. Doesn't she have the right to back whom she chooses? Apparently not.
daisey, phoenix,
Oprah is simply learning first hand what conservative voters have known for years.....those who flock around Hillary are as insecure
as she is, and prone to hatred, tears, blaming, lack of self control, intolerance and vitriolic vindictiveness....starting with Bill. If we are ever misfortunate enough to have another Clinton in office we who don't toe their line will face the same hatred as dear Oprah.

Iyabo Abomide, Southampton,
It seems that the Democratic Party is tearing itself apart over the two issues it has been supporting for years, gender equality and racial equality.
Either Clinton or Obama have to lose this race. Does that mean that the Party favors one form of equality over another?
Even worse, what if both of them lose? Does that mean that the Party rejects both equalities in favor of a white man?
I can see only a nightmare scenario down the road for the Democratic Party.
Roy Weston, Vancouver, Canada
While I have never watched Oprah b/c the whole weepy huggy woman thing is annoying to me - I do admire her philanthropy. This is America and she gets to back whomever she wants. She doesn't owe any group (females or blacks) anything. Even if I wasn't a republican I would never vote for Hillary b/c of the way she tolerated Bill's cheating. I also feel zero guilt for not jumping on the "estrogen bandwagon" and supporting Hillary simply b/c she has a " XX " chromosome.
They should all campaign in Burqua's (yes the men too) with their voices disguised - this would eliminate the stupid distractions (race/gender) and make it about the issues
B Wylie, Raleigh, NC
The Democrat party only like minorities when they vote for them The democrats do not want the minorities in power over them. It's all about the votes with the democrats. After all look how many democrat minorities in Congress have any "real "positions or power. Now look at the republicans and the minorities that have real positions past and present. Hmmm.
Willy, Chesapeake, USA
Oprah is right to follow her racial instincts. That is natural - more so than pandering to entirely manufactured gender interests. Incidentally the Englishman is wrong. It is neither clever nor correct to say 'we are one race, the human race' since science - even professional medicine - recognizes it just ain't so. Paul might learn something from Oprah herself in that respect.
Edward, Louisville, Kentucky
The Clintons back in the White House. That's just what we need again. Let the chaos begin.
Heywood Jablomi, Norfolk, Va, US
I think black is more important than male/female. Oprah has to endorse Obama. I don't think she would endorse another neophyte senator with no foreign policy experience if he weren't black. But he is, so he should be president in her mind.
lou, NYC,
Oprah can vote, back or support whomever she thinks the best candidate. Man or woman. I am a woman and I don't give a rats rear end about Hillary - she is some timey.
C, St. Louis,
Grow up USA it is not if you are black or white, women or man (or both) just......... can you run a large country that has fingers in every other country in the wold.
Barbara, Cheltenham, England
Lets face it, white middle class women have made Oprah one of the wealthest women in the world. Before Obama came into the picture Oprah appeared to be excited about Hillary running for president. I for one was shocked when she expessed her support for Obama, someone who can only promise change, but can't back it up with any real change that he has accomplished in his career! Hillary has always been for CHANGE. When she was in high school she was partaking in discussions with black and hispanic youth church groups and attended a Dr. King speech. What was Obama doing in high school? By his own admittance, "experimenting in drugs and booze". Oprah, Hillary has come down a similar road as your's, always striving for a better America and for those less fortunate!!!
Traitor??? Yes, I believe you chose to support Obama because he is black and not because he is the best choice!!!
Not only do I not support him, neither will I support you anymore!
Nancy, Fort Lauderdale, FL
Frankly, she's wrong if she's doing either, supporting Obama because of his race or Hillary because of her gender. Of course, since the dems have been calling Republicans racists and sexist for time out of mind, the whole scenario has me laughing uproariously. How rich with irony! The proverbial cat is out the proverbial bag!

I strongly suspect a lot of these posts to be from members of both candidates camps. But i must agree with judy ,Mrs Clinton cares only for herself. Also bi-racial? Whats that all about he's black (say it he's black). I'm white he's black, judge the guy on his ability to do the job. We are a race the human race.
Paul, Yorkshire, England
Wow, is the Democratic Party that full of racists and sexists?
Chelsea, Las Vegas,
Maybe the candidates' positions on issues have something to do with it.
Dave Dahms, Easton, Pa.
I totally disagree with those who think women should vote for Hillary Clinton because she is a woman, just as much as with those who feel black people should vote for Obama because he is half black.
We need to vote for the person who can do the job, which we miserably failed to do last time.
Eunice Muir, Lake Helen, FL, USA
I'm no fan of any candidate this election. But Hilliary worked as an attorney in a top law firm, and worked behind the scenes to get Bill elected president. She has also been a productive US senator. No doubt she has more experience than Obama and is more electable. Obama is too far to the left
Pete Moss, Miami , USA / Fl
Anyone giving Oprah hell for her decision should be ashamed. It is our individual right to pick who we would like in an election and to support that person. If Oprah is losing fans then they are fans she likely would have preferred not to have in the first place. I'm smart enough to vote for who I want rather than who any celeb tells me to whether it be Oprah or Chuck Norris.
Blah Blahby, Ayden, NC
I'm from Canada, so I don't get to vote anyway. I agree with Sen. Clinton - you need SOME experience before running the largest economy on Earth.
Clinton is no Reagan, Carter, Nixon, Johnson, Bush H or W, or Bill - all of whom were a governor or VP before president. (Or Ford with decades in congress, Eisenhower ran the biggest army on earth) But, I don't believe she spent all her time baking cookies in the kitchen while Bill ran Little Rock or Washington. She has been a senator much longer than Barak.
Obama has limited experience, and none in or close to executive positions. Is this where the election of president has gone to - image over ability? The man is very bright, likeable, an overall charismatic figure; he should be VP candidate, and will make a great president in 8 years - not yet.
The last president with as little experience, JFK - looked good but almost blew up the world.
I know Oprah liked Obama - I just never heard why she thought he'd be good as president.
MD, Winnipeg, Canada
I would hope that we are beyond being influenced by a celebrity. Oprah is a good example of celebrities that people idolize and think they have inordinate intelligience. Do we have a nation of people lacking self-confidence? Oprah is no smarter than I and I will think for myself. I would not vote for any of the bigger government, give the people a hammock, excuse me, it's called a safety net, candidates. In accuality, the safety net is being used as a hammock by far too many. I'm waitting for the candidate that has a real solution to keeping us out of a recession!
Lynn, Suwanee, GA
I don't think that celebrity endorsements matter very much. Conversely, I also don't think that Oprah is going to lose her audience because she is backing Obama. The American people are much more sophisticated politically than the mainstream media thinks (if indeed the maninstream media thinks very much at all).
Patrick, Irvine, CA
This is a bunch of bull... You can not please all of the people all of the time. Oprah is at a point that she can do what she wants and endorse whomever she wants. I doubt if her image, show or feelings are harmed... If anything, appreciate the momentum that this election has gained. Why don't you give her credit of getting out more poeple, women to vote. Hasn't this been the largest number of voters historically ?!? I dare you to do an article on that....
kris, Houston, TX
I am a white middle-aged feminist who strongly supports Barack Obama. I applaud Oprah's courage and judgment in endorsing him -- clearly it was a big risk for her, but as a woman of integrity, she was willing to put herself on the line for someone whom she feels can lead this country in the right direction, regardless of gender or race. Go, girl!
Sally Francis, Berkeley, CA
Color does enter into my decision, especially when color has been the deciding factor for most Black politicians and spokespersons. I'm a White female, who is Republican, and I would vote Democrat for Hillary before I'd see someone running who has been chosen for his race rather than his experience.
vicki, Atlanta, Georgia
Seems like a good reason to revert to only men having a vote. If it works in the US perhaps we could try it here next time. Regretably both our democracies are in considerable danger from the promotion of emotive issues aimed not at the good of all but just to attract the votes of those seen as shallow and easily swayed. Who these people are who are so easily duped I leave to you to decide.
D.L. Stephens, York, England
I don't think anything less of Oprah because she endorses Barack Obama. This election is being run to find the best "person" for the job. No matter what the race or gender of the person, that person needs to be judged on the content of their character, their ability to make accurate judgements, and their "experience", not just political, but life. The presidency should not be determined by emotional responses to either race or gender. We need the best person for the job of uniting a polarized United States. And in this case, I believe Barack Obama is far superior in his capabilites.
His superior judgement will allow him to choose exceptional
people to serve with him as his advisors. We all know how important that is given the current administration's mishaps.
I believe Oprah is, and always has been, more interested in being true to herself than worried about how people respond
to any one thing she may do.
Cynthia, Westlake Village,
As usual the Clinton character assassination team is hard at work. It's all love and brotherhood until you get between Bill and Hill and power. Then out come the long knives.
Carl, Dededo, Guam
You know I think its hysterical. Obama openly admits that he's disorganized and has to have others. Sort of sounds like Oprah's managment of the girls school in Africa. Seems they do have a lot in common. My question would therefore be how anyone could believe in someone that can only speak about hope and change but when it comes down to it can only create a total mess. Here's to ya Obama and Oprah fans.
sjbj2322, Somewhere, Texas
Face it neither one of them are qualified to be President.
Not because of either sex or race but because neither held a real job , have any accomplishments and no administrative experience.
If hillarys name wasn't clinton or osoma wasn't half black neither would be given a second look.

No Mike, The Left isn't tolerant or civilized.
The Democrats have spent the last 40 years playing race & gender politics. Now they are having to choose between gender politics and racial politics.
The Republicans have put the highest number of women and blacks in positions of power, only to see Democrats refer to those successful women/blacks as gender/race traitors.
Always remember the Democrats were against the US Civil War and against freeing the slaves. Now in the 21st Century the Democrats still think they own black people.
For Democrats the world isn't about individuals; it is about some messed up hierarchy of victimhood. What you are seeing between Obama/Hillary is the two tent poles of the Democrats racial/gender politics fighting it out.
EvilDave, Portland, OR
Thank you Iowa for showing me that there are white people out there who will judge a candidate based on his issues, not his skin color. Thank you for choosing a candidate who could really change things in Washington. The citizens of Iowa allowed me to feel what America could be if we transcend race and deal with the issues. I smiled the day after Barack Obama won and got a glimpse of what America could be. Amercia, in my eyes, became a country that could judge a person based on character, not race. So for those few days after Obama won I got a chance to live in an America that transcended race. Well, a few days is better than never at all. Thank you Iowa.
Michelle Swan, cary, US NC
Why don't women unite and back Hillary? Because she's not the right woman for many of us, that's why. Are you feminist seriously wanting us all to vote for her to push the female agenda higher? What a sell-out to the rest of the population!
What if we care about born and unborn children, what if we care about our individualities and not collectivism, what if we care about our country's soverienty, what if we care about the 'mom and pop' business that makes America what it is, what if we care about lower taxes for EVERYONE WHO PAYS THEM...not just a select few, what if we care about our national defense and our military? ....all these things Hillary is on the wrong side of....ALL of them. THAT is why she will never get this woman's vote!
Angela, small town, USA
This doesn't surprise me one bit that Oprah has chosen a Black to support for the Presidency. She used white women to build her base, made billions of dollars from their support, and then she started courting more and more Blacks and a noticeably less white group. And, then she started spending more and more time in Africa.

You guys think this is a Donnybrook ? Wait till Ralph Nader jumps in to the fray. Although he has not formally declared his candidacy he is listed on a number of the ballot lines for the Green Party Primary in number of states on Super Tuesday.

Oprah - know that you are loved, well respected and admired by many for all the wonderful things you have done throughout your life. You do make a difference and I respect your choice of President. I'm a big girl, a professional lady and I too found that I agreed more, was more inspired, and more empowered by Barack Obama. I'm glad we agree on candidates.
I have chosen not to start to hate Susan Sarandon because she supports John Edwards, And I don't suddenly hate Barbara Streisand's singing ability because she supports Hillary.
For those attacking you - know that many of us "regular folks" have been attacked in our home towns, home town blogs, ets. for difference in local, state and now national support. Be glad you are not one of "them" - they can't sleep well at night.

Women getting up in arms over who Oprah is supporting have got to be some of the most ignorant, insecure women on the planet. Being a strong minded woman means you support who you believe in and let others do the same. By criticizing Oprah for her endorsement of Barak, you are just showing that women need some sort of leader. You are the ones perpetuating the idea of race v gender. Why do you focus so much on race and gender? God made us all equal and we're all of one race--the human race. To try and turn this into a black v woman candidate just belittles how you are viewed worldwide. Attitude is half the battle--stop worshipping anyone on TV.
Psalm40, Fredericksburg,
Yeah, the fact that these women are complaining is embarrassing for America. I guess it never occurred to them that maybe Oprah liked Obama for reasons other than his race. And EVEN if she did choose him because she thought it was more important for an African American than a woman to be president, it's HER RIGHT and HER CHOICE! You don't have to do everything she says, people (though you wouldn't know that by looking at the influence of her book list)!!! Mike is right, maybe we aren't as accepting and open-minded as we'd like to think.

Part of Clinton's strategy is to have trained bloggers. Oprah should not be flapped by the cyber attack. Welcome to the politics of manipulation. You are an American. You have a right to support who you want and for whatever reason.

Clinton has been an excellent Senator for New York. She listens, and responds to her constituents. Will I vote for her? I'm seriusly considering it. Not because she is female, not because Obama is black, but because Clinton has done a fine job as NY Senator.

I canât believe this, people are mad at O for supporting a candidate based on race, instead of based on gender. How dumb has our wonderful country become? Whatever happened to supporting a candidate based on what he/she says and does, and not based on race, gender, or religion.
Jim, Scappoose, Oregon
Supporting someone because of their race or gender is as fundamentally wrong as NOT supporting someone because their race or gender. It should be about policy. Other wise it is just racism or sexism.

Billie Hobson, why are you angry that she isn't supporting Hillary? And why the automatic assumption that she is only backing Barak because he's black? Perhaps she finds him to be the better candidate, independent of race or gender.

Obama is a politician from the Chicago democratic Machine. How can we expect a change, In local elections he endorsed only American African candidates such as Dorthy Tilman and Todd Stroger. The change will be for the worst not for the good.

If Oprah cared about blacks or women she would support a candidate that is for securing our borders and sending illegal immigrants back to their own country. After all it is mainly the lower wage earners that are losing their jobs to illegal immigrant workers or driving wages down.

I've watched Opera over the last couple of years not for content but to observe her position and opinons , she has left me thinking that the country is a bunch of mindless drones who would follow her to the grave , " NO more Opera in my house .....period .
Ronda , Berbank, California
Color would be a factor in my vote only if the candidate is lime green with purple polka dots- and believe me, I would definitely choose that one! Why are people still caring about color when deep down in our hearts we know it doesn't make a bit of difference? As Horton said so well, "A person's a person for all that!" It's the brain, the heart and the character that counts. LN, St. Catharines, ON, Canada

i am a middle aged man who watches oprah regularly. She is a very compassionate woman and does more good than harm. However , having said that, while she is entitled to her opinion, I doubt she sways many votes except the mindless who vote not for thie issues, but for superficial reasons. The country needs sound leadership from our president who stands for something and is firm in their convictions.
john, rome, ny
I don't know why he is even considered the black candidate when in reality he is half white. Anyway, Oprah has made a big mistke in endorsing any candidate publicly, since she is bound to alienate a portion of her viewers.
Ann Collins, Jacksonville, Florida
I'm a white male who supports Barrack Obama. Am I a traitor to my race? Why do people still focus entirely on race and gender to begin with? I support somebody whose message I believe in and support.
tom, philly, pa
If history repeats itself then the country will vote in a black
man before a woman. That is the way the right to vote went
it was first given to the black man then to women. Do you
honestly believe that the majority of men will vote for a woman
at this tme with the current conflict going on in Iraq? We have
to really ask ourselves if everyone is going to think the same
way about things as we do. Oprah knows history well. The
republicans are counting on a certain candidate to get the
nod to increase their odds in this election. They fear Edwards
the most.
cindy, Gettysburg, USA/PA
Opera is just like any other American and has a right to support the political candidate of her choice. With her degree of success and intelligence, one can be sure her backing of Obama was not some spur of the moment decision. I am of the opinion that Opra believes Obama's message and feels he is the candidate who can do the best job for the people. You can agree or disagree with that. Playing the race card in this situation is nothing but a rationalization by Hillary Clinton supporters as to why Opra whould choose Obama over their candidate. In short, I seriously doubt Opra is spending many sleepless nights worrrying about her loss of popularity with Hillary's Feminazi Legions.

Governor Romney's Economic Stimulus Plan â Washington Must Act Now:
Governor Romney's Economic Stimulus Plan Would Provide Much-Needed Relief To Taxpayers, Businesses And Homeowners. Today, our economy is facing unprecedented challenges both here at home and abroad. Our economy needs pro-growth stimulus, but Governor Romney believes any stimulus package should return money to American taxpayers, not increase already out-of-control government spending. To promote economic growth, Governor Romney is proposing an economic stimulus plan that would lower taxes on individuals, reduce taxes for businesses and help homeowners through the current housing crisis.
- Individuals: Governor Romney would permanently reduce the lowest income tax bracket, permanently eliminate payroll taxes on seniors and make middle-class savings tax free.
- Businesses: Governor Romney would institute immediate 100% expensing of equipment for two years and permanently reduce the corporate tax rate.

Race and gender should have nothing to do with one's political choices, but only a fool would believe that they don't influence most people's decisions. Ms Winfrey's decision to back Mr Obama was clearly racial. Read the comments she made about him and you can appreciate the racial pride she feels for Mr Obama. It's her decision to make but she should've known that a lot of women would be alienated by her choice. I care very little for Ms Winfrey's crass marketing of maudlin sentiments, but I care even less about her endorsements. "Stars" do more harm than good and Mr Obama should've realized that any temporary gain by having Ms Winfrey's support would be lost in the flurry of negative publicity that it would elicit in the long run.

So women are offended that a know-nothing entertainer is telling them how to vote....duh!!! I can't believe that anyone would listen to a celebrity in the first place. It's clear, however, that the fawning, mindless fans of Oprah can't think for themselves. God save us from this type of feminist.
R. Moore, Williamsburg, VA
Opera certainly does not need me to defend her and her record of success speaks more loudly than words. I would suggest however, that reading between the lines of the above writer, R. Moore, one can clearly see a strong degree of racial bias. To this I would merely reply, this is the 21st Century where any pweaon of any race or gender is free to work hard and become the best that they can be. Opra can serve as a model for all of us in that catagory and my hat is off to her.
Patrick Rodgers, Irvine, CA
I think that the Hillary camp has organized a propaganda-type campaign to make it appear that women are largely feminist oriented. I don't think that more than a few per cent of women really care very much about this whole kerfuffle.
If I were to give advice to Oprah, it would be to try to determine the source of the barrage; when it is discovered that it is from a relaively few sources, she can relax and do what she believes is the right thing. Conscience is the only trustworthy guide in these situations, and if she thinks that endorsing Obama was the right thing to do, she hasn't a thing to worry about.

Vote the issues, not the race or gender.

So typical of American women

It was not in any way inappropriate for Oprah to support a fellow African-American for president. Hillary is evidently the great white hope for a democratic party that has merely patronized African Americans, taken their political support for granted, and demonstrated once again that the ambition of an opportunity for an African American at the top of a Democratic Party presidential ticket will only remain, to borrow a phrase from Bill Clinton, a âfairy tale.â Hispanics should also take note and be prepared to exist within the confines of the Democratic Partyâs little welfare plantation. They will give you a few scraps here and there as well around election time!

Why would I vote for Hillary because she's a woman?? Why would I vote for Obama because he's biracial. Why would I vote for Huckabee because he is outspoken about his Christian beliefs? Being president of the United States is the most powerful governmental position on earth: it takes intelligence, energy, diplomacy and above all, integrity. This last quality is why Hillary Clinton shouldn't receive one more vote. Come on, Americans, do you really want another 4 or 8 years of what we've had the past 16 years??
Linda Smith, Fishers, Indiana
Most of the hostile comments have come from people registereed at the Oprah site for 12 weeks or less. In other words, the "rage" is manufactured by political hacks pretending to be upset Oprah fans.
Move along folks, there is no story here...

This just shows you how stupid women are, they are crying about Oprah's racism, but don't think twice about THEIR sexism. Britain please do everything you can to emulate the U.S.
Peter, Orlando,
Oprah is as intellectually stimulating as the national enquirer, all hype and exploitative vapid topics. I wouldnt waste my precious brain energy to listen to her let alone watch. Any woman who has a magazine that only features her rotund face every month is an egotistical farce. Oprah, really, who wants to look at you? That said, Obama is an arrogant joke who is not worthy of any high office. His speeches are all Madison Avenue slogans with no substance. What makes him think he can come as some novice and take over this nation on charm alone, if you fall for that you are an idiot. Hillary knows the issues that I'll give her! What it all sadly shows? That American women are so repressed and actually rather dumb latching on to television hosts to shape thier opinions and lifestyles. God thankfully has spared me that affinity and I actually find this cultural iconic cult rather repulsive.

I do not critize Oprah for backing Barack Obama......I just wonder if the Hill is going to rent out rooms in the white house if she is president.......she is not truful and honest in my opion She will NEVER get my voie ..... If she gets to be president America be ware. ....we are in for a very hard time in this county. But if the American people put her there they will deserve it by putting her there. It is a shame that all will suffer.

Although I am a Republican I can honestly say voting for Hillary Clinton would be like voting for Tony Soprano. Alot of skeletons floating around. Although I do not plan to vote for Barrack I find him a far contrast from Hillary who has more tricks up her sleave then a magician and believe me they won't stop. She is not for the working class or any of the nonsense she spews out. She is for Hillary and Hillary alone. Her issues are not my issuses. If Oprah likes Obama I believe we still have that right in this country to support who we like. If a viewer uses this against her well I don't think we are losing too much. I don't always agree with Oprah or Obama but I believe he is sincere and for that I hope he leaves her in the dust. Let's look at what this country has become. We are tailgaiting to voters specifically and that is so sad. We are courting minority votes. How about courting the American vote period and leave Race out of it. It would be a breath of fresh air.

Oprah, self appointed media god. I'm sick of her face, her name and her opinions. An ego out of control.

Maybe she will take all those ex-cheerleaders on a her next "don't disagree with me or you won't go on my next yearly cruse" LOL

It was bad form for Oprah to get involved in a presidential race. Once she did, she showed her true colors by choosing a man because he is black, over the first potential woman, even though she is far more capable & prepared to be our president than him.
If the Obama's became the next couple to occupy the White House, & on day one you compared them to all past presidential couples who've occupied the White House, they would barely register a blip on the meter. If the Clintons become the next presidential couple to occupy the White House, & you compared them the same way, I'm no history expert, but I wouldn't doubt they would register the Highest compared to ALL past presidential couples as being the most experienced, capable, & powerful couple to EVER occupy the White House.I hope this experience issue is clear to you now. We'd be getting an ex-president TOO. It's about BOTH of them. Two for one! The world already knows & loves the Clintons. People better wake the hell up & realize this is not some lame-#### popularity contest about who has the most likable personality, but rather who can beat the Republicans. I genuinely like the Obamas, but this isn't about likability, this is about electability.
Vote for the bigger picture, vote Hillary!

For once I wish women would unite and help another get ahead. For so long, we have all been our own worst enemies. Instead of bringing female colleagues up the ladder with us, we contininuously squash them with the heels of our Jimmy Choos in order to keep them down. Why do men make more than we do? Why is childcare such an issue? Why is this a man's world? Because we do it to ourselves. We need to unite and back and support each other. We need to be Hillary's Village. Black, white and green women, this is a monumental moment in history. Don't let women like "Janet" continue to undermine one of us who is venturing into an arena where women have never ventured before.
Viva Hillary!! We're behind you.
Wendy Wilson, Scranton, pa
I am a woman and I would never vote for Hillary. It doesn't take a village it takes a family to raise a child. She totally cost healthcare when she worked on it during her husband's time in office. There are so many more reasons as well. If Oprah likes Obama good for her. Your go girl.
Jane, Irvine, CA
Mrs. Clinton has one solid constituency and that is frustrated aging white women who see in her the last best hope for resurrecting the lost agenda of 1960s radical feminism. Otherwise Mrs. Clinton flails about angrily trying to comprehend why she is being denied vast segments of the Democratic coalition she believes herself entitled as a woman, a Democrat and a Clinton. She never expected competition from a totally new kind of candidate from one of her party's most reliable client consitutencies.
Her total dependincy on white women of a certain age ultimately forces her to make terrible mistakes such as this last week's embarrassing kerfluffle regarding Dr.King and LBJ.
Mrs. Clinton's time is - dare I say it - gone with the wind. Mr. Obama's is just dawning.
Trevor Thomas, Los Angeles, California
Yes, Obama is a great Orator.....
Vote for him when he runs as an Orator or Actor....Not President of the United States!
As for Hillary, she and Bill have proved to be Socialists,
that carry a large amt. of baggage....In the end, she would
not be elected President.
So...guard your vote...choose, very carefully, the person who can most likely
lead this country out of the problems in which we find ourselves...
Catica, Fullerton, CA.
Just voting for someone because they are a woman, or a black man, or a christian or a LDS guy is the most riduculous thing I've ever heard. These liberal women are stupid. If Condalizza Rice were running for office, I highly doubt they would support her. These liberal women don't want the best person for the job. This is why , gender or race voting will always lose in the end. People who just vote for Obama because he is black will be very disappointed. What does the person stand for and believe in? What moral values do they have to help them make decisions? Do they believe in the American way of life? Wake up people!!
Carolyn Amditis, Ringwood, NJ
Why anyone would watch this woman is beyong me. I watched only a few shows year ago, that was all I need to see. There is entirely too much grandstanding and nonsubstance. But after all it is show business.
Barbara, Kansas City,
I may be a woman, but I am a human being first. I will never vote for or against a candidate strictly because of sex or race. I could never vote for Hillary because of her ideas and policies. The good of the country comes first, and, in my opinion, she would do nothing but harm to the U.S. Oprah has every right in the world to choose Obama over Hillary. Obama is without a doubt the better candidate of the two, though his experience is a bit low. But at least he's likeable. Hillary's only experience is a failed healthcare package and being in charge of "bimbo eruptions". She's done nothing as a Senator, and there's not much presidential experience from being First Lady. Whoever votes using only the criteria of sex or race is doing no service to the country. Women who get upset with Oprah...or anyone else...should look at themselves more closely, and try to use some intelligence before voting at all.
Janet Fuls, Cottonwood, CA USA
i personally cant believe that anyone would choose any leader, much less the president of the united states based on gender or color. your vote should be based on the ability of the person to do the job. think with your head not your heart.
j.jones, indpls. , IN.
A traitor for not endorsing a woman? This is prejudice at its worst. How about endorsing the best candidate regardless of externals such as color or gender? What happened to ideals within the Democrat Party? They've succombed to special interests, political correctness, and outcome-based quota systems. You've come a long way, baby, and it's not good.

Do women expect Oprah to support Clinton just because she's a woman? If so, that is pathetic!
Kevin, North Brunswick, NJ, USA
Oprah has learned the hard lesson...No matter how much money and influence you think you have, everyone is born with one buttocks and one opinion...and everyone in exercising their own opinions and the pundits(including the influence peddlers like Oprah) be damned!
Vote Ron Paul in 2008!
Chicago Paul, Park Forest, USA
It's great to watch the various liberal wings of the Democrat Party turn on each other like cannibals. Their entire platform is collapsing under the ponderous weight of all those hysterical, lock step liberals having at it over estrogen levels and melanin counts. Very, very entertaining.
MDWhite, Los Angeles, CA USA
Don't understand why some people think Hillary is "a well qualified woman" running for President. Her time in the Senate amounts to her occupying a chair--there has been little in the way of results. Before that her experience is of the negative variety. Saying she can be President based on her experience is like saying Brett Favre's wife has the experience to be quarterback for the Packers because she's been watching him.
John Oppie, Georgetown, Texas
I am a form Oprah viewer and former Chicagoan now living in Sarasota, Fl. I am also a professional married woman, a speech-language pathologist with an adult daughter (21). I am disappointed in Oprah as well, and feel she choose race over gender . Say what you will about experience....Obama simply does not have what it takes to take over our country at a time like like this: possibly in 8 or 12 years. I have to wonder: if Obama was white: would Oprah have supported him? Somehow I doubt it. Like I said: I'm a former viewer.
Jeanne Batalia, Sarasota,
How quickly it comes down to race and/or gender. Proves the shallow minds that support these two. I still don't care what's between their legs, but what's between their ears. I am hearing no specifics from either of them, just platitudes and generalities.

Why anyone would watch this selfabsorbed woman is beyond me. I quit watching after only a few shows. There is far to much selfpity and gloom. She is in show business, so what can you expect.
