John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, fiercely rejected a newspaper report that romantically linked him to a 40-year-old female political lobbyist and accused of granting her clients political favours.
Mr McCain, 71, had denied the claims to the New York Times but, after sitting on the story for several weeks, the paper published them.
The piece claimed that, eight years ago during his first run for the White House, his aides were so concerned about his relationship with Vicki Iseman that they blocked her access to him to "protect the candidate from himself".
Mr McCain and Ms Iseman both denied to the newspaper that they had ever had a romantic relationship. The story was first alluded to on the Drudge Report website just before the Iowa and New Hampshire nomination contests, but after frantic lobbying by Mr McCain and his aides at the time the New York Times did not publish it then.
It was unclear last night what impact the allegations would have on Mr McCain, who is now on the verge of wrapping up the Republican nomination after staging an extraordinary political comeback. He had been written off in the presidential race six months ago when his campaign collapsed.
The timing of the allegations comes as Mr McCain had begun to build bridges with his party's conservative base and as the Republican establishment have rallied behind him in anticipation of a general election fight against either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.
The potentially most damaging allegations contained in the article centre on Mr McCain's reported conflicts of interests in the areas of political funding and lobbying. He has built a reputation as a scourge of the excesses of both but is accused of several instances of hypocrisy.

World its not white or black, this decision is fiction or fact. America we can not be affraid of change. just a few years back African American and women could not vote, and now they are running for president. Obama is ready! We need to be ready for change, he can not do any worse than what we now have at hand!
Norman Griffin, Abilene, Texas
The fact of the matter is, if Clinton was our presidential nominee, she would lose to McCain. There are just not enough voters willing to see her in office.
Personally, I would rather see Obama in office then Clinton in the democratic seat.
YesPlease, Los Gatos, CA
for the life of me, I cannot understand why people actually think Barak Obama (and I am so tired of his name already) is in any way remotely Presidential material. Hype it, spin it, fluff it up any way you like, he just DOES NOT HAVE LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE OR QUALITIES. He doesn't even vote half the time! HE COPIES SENATOR CLINTON's POLICIES AND PLANS and has merely followed her lead on numerous important issues.
start praying America
anInformedAmerican, New York, NY
When are the people of the United States going to realize they are making a huge mistake once again.
Can Obama walk the walk...he is doing a lot of talking.
The Presidency of such a Powerful country should be based on 'Intelligence and Experience" not "Poetry and speech".
What happened to the Clinton support....figure they jumped ship for their own.
Portia, New York,
I do not care who McCain exchanges bodily fluids with, utterly irrelevant and uninteresting
Adrian, Fremont, USA, CA
Considering the New York Times has already endorsed Mccain , this is a good publicity stunt to make people notice Mccain is another candidate out there!
Ann, Pasadena, CA/USA
We have to ask whether this would have happened if Romney would have been the candidate.
Ian Burgess, Bristol,
Senator Obama is more than just nice speeches, he is a very intelligent man, (unlike Clinton and McCain, for all of their so called experience) Obama did not support the war in Iraq. I feel that Obama represents true change and I would be proud to have him as our President, I know that the world would view America as the great nation it once was, before Bush.
mike, oaksville, maryland
I cannot believe how Obama, without anything more than nice speeches, is winning in this country, but then again Bush was elected twice here. I am sorry for the bad comments on McCain, he doesnât seem to deserve them. Good luck Hillary!
Anne , LA, USA
NYT,s article stinks to high heaven. As an older person it has smell of slime time; by the opposition.
Shades of McCains run in 2000; a blind dog could snife NYT agenda with this article. For myself and my family as well as the U.S.and the world McCain has our votes. At this time with the world in turmoil we need a MAN in the White House not a DYNASTY.(i.e,) the Clintons nor an untested person. WAKE-UP AMERICA before its to LATE!!!!!!!
Betty, Roanoke, Alabama
It all depends on what your definition of "romance" is.
Roger C., St. Louis, Mo.
It appears that when Obama's wife stated that she is finally proud of America, this is part of the doctrine for the church they belong to. This is also proof that when someone refuses to place his/her hand over their heart for the Star Spangled Banner or refuses to state the Pledge of Allegience is really who you want in the White House?
Please give me a break and think about this, how can someone do all this and still be Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. One final item to remember, What has Obama Done for the two years that he was US Senator from Illinois? Not a thing that is what. No bills, no laws, just collecting his check and having the worse record for voting.
McCain is just a Democrat in a Republican suit, just try to prove this wrong!
I hope that if there is a choose for a candidate, that is the write-in vote. Try it, it does not hurt at all.
Fank, Winder, GA
It's been a long a coming but sex is finally here! I bet the so-called "romantic link" will soon be referred to as a form of "perversity" by those malicious opponents who go for the jugular.
Ray Massart, Hombeek, Belgium
The NYT which is the propaganda organ of the Democrat Party will print far worse trash than this once the nominations are clinched. They will print absolutely anything to help the Dems and hurt the Republicans. It is amazing how what was once a respected newspaper has descended to the credibility of a supermarket tabloid.
W. Marne, Bellevue, NE
Sounds like McCain had a Jimmy Carter moment with "lust in is heart" that never did quite reached his groin area thanks to his handlers. If he were a Democrat this story would mean instant stardom true or false. As a Republican we will need to wait for the truth to surface.
Thron, Tyler, Texas
If the democrats thought there was nothing wrong with Monica Lewinsky then what is the fuss about?
Bud Synyder, Houston, USA/TX
The many of us in this country who have not jumped blindly onto the Fantasyland Bandwagon (my term for the Obama madness) believe he is a naive, arrogant whiner and that if he somehow gets into the Presidency, it will not take long for the voters who put him there, like those who voted at least once for Bush, to realize what they have done. That bandwagon is head for a crash of monumental proportions. Lofty speeches do NOT a president make. He is simply NOT prepared. I continue to fear for my country, as I have feared for it for the last eight (nearly) years. This is madness!
Ellen Lawson, Atlanta, GAk, USA
I read that NYT piece on the way to work this morning, and I must say that having actually read it, I did not come away with the impression that McCain had ever actually crossed the line or done anything wrong.
The whole point of the Times' article was that, for as much honesty and integrity as McCain has - and he does have plenty, they concede - he seems to be rather oblivious to the outward appearances of some of his associations.
They are actually accusing him of lack of judgement and forethought (and perhaps for being too trusting?), not of any actual wrongdoing or ethical missteps.
Ben Hoff, New Jersey, USA
Have you noticed all the men and TV commentators complaining about Hillary sounding shrill? Well, listen to some reruns of John and Bobby Kennedy. They sounded like cartoon characters. If you weren't watching the TV when Bobby was speaking you would have thought it was Bugs Bunny talking.
Lill, New windsor,
Americans are comically naive about women.
If they were an older, more mature people, they would embrace the idea of Hillary as President with alacrity.
Look at women rulers in history. They have been few, but a high proportion have had astounding greatness. Elizabeth I, Catherine the Great, Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi, even, on a much lower level, Mrs Thatcher.
Of Indira it has been said by a vetern diplomat that she is the only Indian ruler Pakistan has held in fear and respect.
Come on, poor Americans, wake up: Iran will fear America for the first time when Hillary is President.
Ganpat Ram , London , UK
So Obama is right. The Washington's sickness. Lobbyist, money, buying imfluence while the people of the richest nation of earth failing to afford healthcare, decent pension and so on. MCain presents himself as Mr. Clean, what will he do in the White House? A Republican Monica and loybists?
Jesse Kally-Williams, Pratigau, Switzerland
Re: Bill & Shirlâs post
I respect your opinion and agree that Hillary has given a lot to this country. But, speaking as a working woman myself, I donât think Hillary is the best choice for president of the US. She comes across as desperate and angry, not at all what I would want in a president. I agree with the media that sheâs a polarizing figure and Iâm frankly tired of the Billary Show. I want a fresh start with a young, dynamic leader who inspires people and I think Obama can do just that.

GEORGE WILL in today's W P:
Nothing, however, will assuage Clinton supporters' sense of injustice if the upstart Obama supplants her. Their, and her, sense of entitlement is encapsulated in her constant invocations of her "35 years" of "experience." Well.
She is 60. She left Yale Law School at age 25. Evidently she considers everything she has done since school, from her years at Little Rock's Rose Law Firm to her good fortune with cattle futures, as presidentially relevant experience.
The president who came to office with the most glittering array of experiences had served 10 years in the House of Representatives, then became minister to Russia, then served 10 years in the Senate, then four years as secretary of state (during a war that enlarged the nation by 33 percent), then was minister to Britain. Then, in 1856, James Buchanan was elected president and in just one term secured a strong claim to being ranked as America's worst president. Abraham Lincoln, the inexperienced former one-term congressman, had an easy act to follow.
Elaine, Charlottesville, VA, USA
Until there is at least one named source for this story I would ignore it. The NY Times no longer maintains the reputation it once had and is well known in the US for it's leftist bent. It's very easy to throw mud, but without facts and sources it's just that -- mud.
Nona, New York City, USA
Don't know whether you folks stateside have heard the expression 'sour grapes'.
Hillary is about to lose. Huckabee has lost. It's called democracy, face it.

QUOTE :: Hillary Clinton is a shrill, critical woman who cannot unify the country and lead us on to greatness.
Dion Per Sona, Cardiff, UK,
Despite the fact Senator Barack Obama leads a glaring and prominent victory in US- election-2008's primaries, it appears that Mrs Hillary has rich assets of ideological defiance, determination and promptitude to contest the on going race towards White House- a symbol of American Presidential dignity and diversity. To many Americans, the Democratic Obama has a befitting character to become the next US president, yet to many Americans, the charismatic Mrs Clinton has also expedient deserts to suitably match to the post of the US president. The moments of suspense and interests still dominate the US election- scene.See what happens next!
Syed Qamar Afzal Rizvi, KARACHI, Pakistan
I hoping there is still time for the more esoteric media pundits to latch on to candidates' voting records and requisit skills. Ron Paul is your gift horse and you're too dumbed down to see it. God help us all, even outside the U.S.A.
andy, Herts, UK
I really hope McCain does the honarable thing and drops out. I have no clue how we got to this point but he's a horrible candidate. Romney still should be the man for 2008.
Dan, Orlando, Fl
soooo, it would appear that the old saying about putting lipstick on a pig is true.
Here's a suggestion, select a real conservative candidate who is of good character, one who will not allow illegal aliens to run a muck, someone who will work by the constitution and not infringe our rights, someone who will get us out of Iraq, but without leaving a mess behind, someone who supports completely demolishing the IRS, someone who understands both the old and the young, who takes his vow to "Do no harm" to heart... yep bring Ron Paul to the front of the line and I will take him every time over the current crop of run of the mill professional "Politicians".
R. Scott, Wichita, Kansas
I think whoever wins will feel sorry they won in 2009. The housing bubble is far from over, we don't make things in America anymore, Next there will be waves of mortgage brokers loan officers arrested for mortgage fraud.
We wont spend money on public transportation, trains, heck even subways in NYC its going to be another 7 maybe 10 years before we have a new subway line to handle the overcrowding, and we could use 2 more new lines to get the outlying areas that had so many condos built in the last 5 years.
The only hope is a real money man Bloomberg spends his loot and wins.....We NEED an apolitical president right now in America
But sadly we might get what we deserve and suffer a huge recession that might have been avoided.
Richard Allen, New York City, NY
Another Fake Conservative on the RIGHT! Let's not forget this is the party of morals and high family values.I love it when they are exposed for what they really are.
CHRIS, naperville,
Its nice to see a republican sex scandal not involving men's restrooms or underage male pages for once.
Eric, Akron,
The story is a complete tabloid. There is no evidence of any sort. Lots of innuendo, little fact.
Phil, Iowa City, Iowa
Hillary is done but getting her to realize that will take a few more losses. I read today that she is not a natural leader; and has spent her entire career compromising. Hillary Clinton is a shrill, critical woman who cannot unify the country and lead us on to greatness. Someone said she would make a wonderful Supreme Court Justice or can finish out a long and distinguished career in the Senate if she wants to. But the restoration of a Clinton White House is not in the cards. Obama is a dream candidate and he is jetting past her.
Mark, Shepherdstown, USA
Barack Obama represents the first American orator of the 21st. century---the first orator since JFK. He will be elected in a flash, and then, all will wait to hear what he comes up with next. This is not true of any world leader at this time, they are all predictable, all average men in big jobs, Obama may actually be a superior man in a big job.
In the US, the under-30 crowd had all but abandoned politics as being the realm of the average, the bought, the boring. Obama has returned young adults to the political process of America and it is about time.
Registered Republican for Obama!
John Burke, Santa Cruz, California, USA
All of it both sides just reaffirms my belief that you could select 437 people from the humane society, rotary club shriners charity foundations and have better government. "Dave" the movie from a few years back illustrated it nicely.
Richard, Greenwood, IN USA
In the great journalist tradition of James Callander , the character assasins have begun their attack on McCain
Jack Shapiro, West Bloomfield, Michigan, U.S.A.
Political pundits said the John McCain's harsh remarks last night towards Obama were uncalled for this soon in the race. So McCain brought this allegation on himself.
Beverly Buster, Bremerton, WA
So what? If McCain was a Democrat his poll numbers would go up.
Jarof Pickles, Atlanta,
Nice how the mainstream media waits until McCain clinches the nomination to unload on McCain. The news media is pathetic. More propaganda like Pravda and more election rigging.
Franc , Palm Beach, FL USA
It's an Obamination!
Christopher Coughlin, Springfield, Vermont
All this is neither here nor there. At the end of the day good sense will prevail and John McCain will win.
Roger Blackmore, Troy, NY
Rush Limbaugh predicted this scenario of attacks on the liberal McCain years ago. Please try to keep up.
"If you're 20 and not a liberal, you don't have a heart. If you're 30 and not a Conservative, you don't have a brain."

My Wife & I have watched many different News Stations over the past several weeks & from Sean.Chris, Oberman, Wolf, & Others, it has become Quite Obvious that given Hillary's Service to the People of this Country over Her 35 years, Both Good & Bad Results, She has Always been the One Being Torn Apart & Rediculed Openly from the Media..Yes, We have a Woman & a Black Man( Mother was White ) running for the Highest Office in Our Country for the 1st Time. But It is Genuinely Obvious that Although Women have Come a Long Way From the Right to Vote There is NO Way a Woman Will Become PRESIDENT of the USA No Matter How Much SHE has Given of HER Life to the Publics Issues. WHY Do All the Above mentioned MEDIA Names Always Hit Hillary with the Difficult Questions in Any Area, which she Answers without Hesitations, Putting Herself Out there for Constant Citicisims But NEVER is Barack Given the Same Amount of Questioning from the Media?Hillary will never get Maj. White Men Support!!
FAIR?
Bill & Shirl Sabatelli, Warwick, R.I.
Hillary's right on about Obama and the Republicans know it..Hillary08 for America's only real hope for the Whitehouse.
Retta Crawford, St.Louis, Missouri
Looks like the GOP will have an open or brokered convention in Minneapolis.
The question is why would anyone want the job.
