The long and increasingly negative battle between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton appears to have taken a heavy toll on the reputation of the former First Lady, with her false claim to have dodged sniper fire in Bosnia in 1996 emerging as one of the biggest blunders of the campaign.
Polls released yesterday revealed that Mrs Clinton has lost the trust of US voters and that more Americans now view her unfavourably than at any time since she entered the White House as First Lady in 1992.
In a worrying sign for Mr Obama, despite a new survey showing him to be the favoured candidate among Democrats to become their presidential election nominee, nearly half believe that recent revelations about his former pastor’s incendiary comments could doom him in a November contest against John McCain, the Republican nominee-apparent.
With just six days until the next nominating contest for the Democrats, in Pennsylvania, Mr Obama will nevertheless be encouraged by the polls yesterday. They suggest that he is weathering the controversy over his remarks that blue-collar voters “cling” to guns and religion because of their straitened circumstances.
Mrs Clinton, who held double-digit leads over Mr Obama in Pennsylvania last month, was ahead by 46 per cent to 40 according to the Franklin & Marshall College poll in the state. The same poll found her ahead by 16 points in March. Other polls showed Mr Obama leading in Indiana (by 5 points) and North Carolina (by 13 per cent) — the next states to vote on May 6, after the contest in Pennsylvania on Tuesday.
Mr Obama also received a boost before the primary next week with two significant endorsements. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, in a part of the state that favours Mrs Clinton demographically, backed her rival.
The Illinois senator was also backed by Bruce Springsteen, the veteran singer. It was a well-timed endorsement in the light of claims by Mrs Clinton that the remarks of Mr Obama showed him to be elitist and condescending to America’s workers. The music of Springsteen, who has sold more than 65 million albums in the US alone, includes anthems celebrating the American working man.
A survey by The Washington Post and ABC News showed that Mr Obama holds a ten-point lead over Mrs Clinton among Democrats asked whom they would prefer to see as the party’s nominee. In the poll, 54 per cent of Americans said that they had an unfavourable view of Mrs Clinton, her highest “negatives” since the question was first asked about her 16 years ago. It is up from 40 per cent just after she won the New Hampshire primary in January. Just 39 per cent believe that she is honest and trustworthy, the poll showed.
The favourability rating for Mr Obama has also dropped, from 63 to 56, but his negative rating is far lower than Mrs Clinton’s, at 39 per cent. Twice as many Democrats saw him as more electable than Mrs Clinton, a sharp reversal of earlier trends.
Overall, the polls suggest that the false claim by Mrs Clinton that she ducked sniper fire on a visit to Bosnia has damaged her more than the comments from Mr Obama have damaged him. Republicans are already highlighting the comments as proof that Mr Obama is a liberal elitist, one of their most effective strategies against Democratic presidential candidates.

I have been saying this here at home, this is the most unique presidential race this nation has ever see. It has force my country to think about race and gender and the "isms" that are under the surface of our society. As an African American, I am happy to see that a Black man has a real chance to govern my country. I never thought I would live to see this day (I am 51) and have friends in their 80s who really never thought they would see this. A year ago, I was one of the 2/3 who backed Clinton. Today, I am witnessing a tarnishing a legacy. I heard Obama's message, wasn't concerned about his name, understood the African American experience in this country, and was ready for something other than the Bush/Clinton fued. I believe this election will tell the world a lot about where we stand. It will be hard to convince warring factions in other lands to get along and work together when we have citizens who will refuse to vote for a fellow citizen because of his skin tone.

The Clintons' method of saving the house by burning it down has caught up with her.
Obama offers a true possibility for change in America's odd world view. We are in fact the world's enemy by using force of arms instead of contributing to improve the level of education and using the vast resources available to eliminate the dreadful poverty world wide.
This is indeed an opportunity for America to get it right after these dismal Bush years.
joel, Dallas, US
Obama is the way, the means and the answer. If Americans are truely world powers as they claim to be, this is definitly the right time to prove it. I do not see any candidate here that maches Obama's quality, his bravery, intellect and charisma. The others are just preachers looking to be spoon-fed.

Perhaps John McCain should chose Hilary Clinton as his Vice Presidential candidate. Every day she looks more and more like a Rovian Republican and has already done the McCain camp quite a service. Concidering the lengths to which she will go to get back into the Whitehouse... she would probably accept.

This is really too bad. I think the USA really needs a change from the Republicans for a while. The Democratic party seems to be its own worst enemy right now. Clinton and Obama need to get it together. Hillary probably needs to concede defeat and make peace with Obama .. and then support him. Maybe that would help ... it it's not too late before the November elections.

I don't know what it is, but that woman just gives me the creeps!
Not very scientific I know but you have to follw you instincts sometimes.
Ian Johnson, Ramsgate, UK
Hillary acted as if she was a Republican candidate, and forgot that they were running for the same nomination, she has damaged the party and also Obama it is unfortunate. But every one already knew what Hillary was about and the Democratic Party should have haulled her in, before now. So they also had a responsibility to do the right thing when they knew Hillary could not win. Hillary was the one who leaked that Rev Wright vedio, and the was sent to Fox News they cut it and taped it and kept playing it out of contex, and quite honestly that is what happend, Politics is a dirty business, and that is why many people do not vote, Obama managed to get people who would other wise not vote, and appealed to the young. And the Democratic Party should have done what the Republicans did select a leader sooner. None of the Republicans ran a negative campaign, they did it responsibley. Hillary should have done the right thing, if you can't win don't stay on doing damage. How can Hillary be VP?.
Daphne Kenward, Cambridge, United Kingdom
This year's Presidential race has become a battle between the endemic corruption entagled with big business, and a true democratic groundswell. America is heading for a revolution. It will either come gently with Mr Obama, or forcefully from the remnanats of a broken and corrupted system.
rowan gorringe, Hyland Park, NSW
Senator Obama hasn't got a hope in winning the US election. Too many skeltons in the closet. It doesn't matter which wins the democratic nomination, John McCain will be the winner. I believe and endorse Senator Clinton. She speaks for many in America but unfortunately too many cannot find it in their hearts to vote for a woman. How sad that countries like Pakistan, India and The UK have advanced beyond us on that subject. A vote for Sen. Obama is a vote for John McCain.

Her lies are catching up with her. Youc an fool some people some time but you cannot fool all the people all the time.
You cannot run away from yourself either.
John, CHICAGO, USA
It's not easy being in a close race run for the presidential candidate. Unfortinate for her, but a positive for the voters. Her one most serious mistake (obviously a trait ). The tendency to dramatize situatiions, is a trait you do not want in a president of the United States.
Good luck America
