Barack Obama vowed yesterday to visit war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan before the US presidential election as he comes under fire from his war-hero rival John McCain.
The Democratic candidate said that he would pay only his second trip to Iraq after speaking by telephone to the country’s Foreign Minister, Hoshyar Zebari, who met Mr McCain in Washington on Sunday. “I told him that I look forward to seeing him in Baghdad,” Mr Obama told reporters.
Mr Obama reiterated his call for a US troop withdrawal, saying that the Iraq war is crippling the American economy and calling on the Iraqi Government to “pick up the tab” with its soaring oil revenues.
John McCain, the Republican candidate, who has visited Iraq eight times, has repeatedly attacked Mr Obama for calling for a precipitous troop withdrawal and criticised him for failing to visit the country since the US surge began. The Republican Party has posted a clock on its website counting the days — 890 as of yesterday — since Mr Obama visited Iraq.
Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO who is a McCain advisor, said that she hoped Mr Obama would be forced to “acknowledge the surge is working” when confronted with the facts on the ground.
Mr Obama made his announcement on Iraq as he visited Michigan for the first time in a year to shore up support in a Democrat-leaning state viewed as vulnerable to Mr McCain.
Former Vice-President Al Gore, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, was due to make his first joint appearance with Mr Obama at a rally in Detroit last night. “From now through election day I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected president of the United States,” Mr Gore told supporters in an e-mail.
The Obama campaign is telling donors that the Illinois senator can still become America’s first black president even if he loses the two key battleground states of Florida and Ohio — which determined the 2000 and 2004 elections, respectively.
David Plouffe, Mr Obama’s campaign manager, is targeting Virginia in particular, where a Democratic presidential candidate has not won since 1964, as well as Georgia and several Rocky Mountain states.
Mr Obama continues to court Hillary Clinton’s female supporters, delivering a strong message in a Fathers’ Day address at a Chicago church on Sunday to black fathers to be more responsible. “Too many fathers are MIA, too many fathers are Awol,” he said.
With his wife and daughters sat in the front pew, Mr Obama said growing up in a home without a father took a toll on him. But he acknowledged that he was an “imperfect father” himself because of all the time he spent away from his family on the campaign trail.
The first former top Hillary Clinton staffer switched to the Obama camp yesterday when Mr Obama named Patti Solis Doyle, who stepped down as his rival’s campaign manager in February, as chief-of-staff of his yet-to-be-chosen running mate. The latest polls show Mr Obama trailing Republican rival Mr McCain by an average of 8.3 per cent in Florida but leading in Ohio by 1.3 per cent.
Peter Brown, an expert on Florida and Ohio at the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said that it was possible for Mr Obama to win the presidency without taking Ohio, if he wins Iowa, New Mexico and either Nevada, Colorado or Virginia.

The "surge" (an "ooze" in my mind) has reduced violence, but to infer it will lead to happy-land in Iraq is ridiculous. It doesn't matter if we pull out in 16 months or 100 years, the same implosion will occur; the fuse is simply time released. McCain hasn't a prayer in the U.S. We've had it.

Mr. Obama is NOT suggesting that he will bypass classic battleground states, but rather that he won't necessarily NEED to win a Florida or an Ohio (or, in an extreme case, both) in order to win the presidency. This is a non-news item; it's been discussed in the U.S. media for months now.

Strange for Jane in Singapore to mention the skeletons in Obama;s closets. How could the father who left him when he was only 2 years old object to his baptism? He was no longer in the picture, having remarried and returned to Kenya. May be some facts checking could enlighten you, poor Jane! Wrong!
John, CHICAGO, USA
How does he appoint a chief of staff for a role not yet filled surely any potential VP will come with own staff and chief of staff. Tis will not be encouraging for people on the short list
Joe T, Ipswich,
I think Obama can win election without going into battleground states - FL and OH, but he should not give up. Unemployment and economy are the most important concerns for voters in OH for example and he offers good solutions to the economic woes. Obama should not give up those states easily.
David Dzidzikashvili, Cambridge, USA
All theses writers seem so clued up and smart perhaps one or all of them should run to be President. They have all the answers, which makes me wonder why their country is just such a heap of rubbish, and have all these economical problems, perhaps its because BUSH was the greatest. Do me a favour.
Daphne Kenward, Cambridge, UK
Wait, are you calling Obama loose? How do you know? That´s a bit inappropriate for a news website, no?
Antonio, Madrid, Spain
I hear the word Change chanted as if it were the Alpha and Omega of life. But will some one explain just what Change? Obama has not voted over 40% of the short time in the Senate. 40%! Would you promote someone who skipped work that much? Obama is a rock star not a serious man.

Is it because he is a mixed raced man (and considered by many to be Black) that there is so much vitriol against him - when clearly his policies are so much better than John McSame's?
And what does that say about you Marcella Smith, Jane, Jenny J and Robert? Embrace Change and end your resentment!
Jimmy C, Letchworth Garden City, UK
Jane, Singapore is wrong. I married a muslim woman with the blessing of her father - a devotely religious man. Many families share different faiths.
We should not demonize WORD muslim. What about values? Truth? Honesty? Globally, USA reputation stinks. Who will fix it?
Leigh Vernier, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Hmm, I live in Ohio, and Obama was just here several days ago campaigning at an old folks' home. He said the usual Democrat handbook baloney, trying to scare them about Social Security and how he will raise the taxes on 'rich' people. Hopefully he will never come back, now that he doesn't need Ohio.
Marcella Smith, Ohio, USA
Obama is unlikely to win the Presidential elections. There are just too many skeletons in his closets. First, he has to explain why as the son of a muslim father he was not brought up as a muslim. No muslim man would tolerate his child being baptised as a christian.
Jane, Singapore, Singapore
He might as well skip all the battleground states.
I wonder if he's really thought about what he'll do after the election. He sure ain't going to be living in the White House.
Jenny J, Portland, USA
He will have to try to do this....he will loose with traditional states to the White House and he will also loose with this approach! Wait until after the convention....the Republicans are too smart to use the swift boats now because they may end up with Clinton and they would loose. Just stand by
