Barack Obama’s campaign apologised today to two Muslim women who were moved from behind the podium at a rally in Detroit earlier this week because volunteers wanted to prevent headscarves appearing in photographs and TV shots.
A spokesman said the decision was “offensive and counter” to Mr Obama’s “commitment to bring Americans together”.
But this incident reflects the sensitivity of a campaign which has spent months rebutting false rumours that Mr Obama is a secret Muslim - and the past 48 hours fighting charges he is soft on terrorism.
The Democratic nominee is expected to announce plans for a trip to Iraq next month - his first visit for more than two years - and Afghanistan. Aides say it is likely that the trip will also include stops in Israel, where public opinion is generally hostile to him, and possibly Europe, where he would receive a warm welcome from liberal peace campaigners.
This week he has been attacked by John McCain’s Republican presidential campaign over his “naive” and “delusional” support for the rights of terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay.
Mr Obama hit back by saying Republicans who had led failed efforts to capture Osama bin Laden were in no position to criticise him. “What they’re trying to do is what they’ve done every election cycle, which is to use terrorism as a club to make the American people afraid,” he said.
Although new opinion polls today showed him beating Mr McCain in a clutch of key swing states, Mr Obama still trails the Republican nominee on national security issues.

I think what Obama did to those women was disgusting and outrageous. I don't trust him anymore. He says he does not discriminate, yet he adds fuel to the fire and becomes anti-muslim just like John McCain. I hope he loses the 8 million muslim american votes!

Fighting a war you were not even supposed to be there in the first place, as in Vietnam; perpetrating a war you are not supposed to be in, surely, does not make you an expert on foreign policy. WAR IS NOT FOREIGN POLICY, PERIOD!!!
Tladi, Gaborone, Botswana
In Islam everyone is born muslim no matter who you are, then you choose yr beliefs after childhood is over, say 14 yrs. In order to be apostate you need to declare yourself to be muslim and then go the other way. Obama is not a muslim cos anyone who says that isnt by default
Abdullah, london,
This really highlights the extremes of American politics. Two women in headscarves! Wow what a fright! How terrifying!! They should have been up there on the podium with him along with all of the other great varieties of American life.
Boris the Russian, Belgravia, United Kingdom
dale. how many terms did W serve as governor of texas? Wouldnt you say experience has let us down in a big way with him as president? Obama has strong leadership qualities and the potential to take America towards another direction, which she desperately needs!

When the public are so ill educated on foreign affairs like in US where 95% of the population have neve travelled outside US, one has to take measures such as this to avoid votes going the other way. As a Muslim I certainly am NOT offended.
Ali, London, UK
Antonio from Estepona is exactly right. And I wonder what Muslims are doing at a rally for a party that supports homosexual rights, abortion, and free and equal rights for women? Isn't that Haram or something?

The moment Obama chose to be a Christian, he ceased to be a muslim. In Islam we use the term 'apostate' to describe such a person, i.e a non muslim. You are totally wrong, as any islamic scholar will tell you he cannot possibly be considered a Muslim, period.
akram, london,
To KL of Seatle - he may be born to a Muslim father but the moment he choses to be a Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Jew etc he no longer remains a muslim as being a muslim (or indeed Christian etc) is all about BELIEF - and not blood lines. Any cleric or any religion will tell you that.
Terry, London, UK
All presidential candidates must support Israel or they wont be able to become president..... such is the power of the Jewish lobby in the USA.
Hence the reason for removing muslim women from thepodium.
Abdullah, Reading, UK
Obama is apostate. He didn't have a choice. His father was a muslim therefore he was born a muslim. But he was raised and professes to be a Christian. If so, why move the women out of shot?
Bad PR whichever way you cut it.

New man, old politician.
Kevin Straw, Leicester,
Obama is the right person to lead our country back to the people. The republicans are starting to use their fear campaign as they did 4yrs ago to keep lying to us about the war. the republicans have no other ground to stand on, they have lost the trust of the people.
Bernadette Zuniga, Sacramento, united states
No foreign relations experience.
Has not even completed one senate term.
Wants to raise personal income taxes, lessen the amount one can tax defer for retirement, double capital gains taxes thus greatly reducing investment capital during an economic slow down, not too bright.
Dale, Pasadena, CA, United States
Let's not pussyfoot here: Obama doesn't want to be associated with Islam. Any Muslims who want to support him need to be smart enough not to be flouting their affiliation, and preoccupation, with their faith.
Antonio, Estepona, Spain
If Mr. Obama is the son of a Kenyan Muslim man, is he not, then, a Muslim under Sharia? You surely know this, so why do you call the rumour false? In the US, where we have freedom of religion, he's whatever he wants to be. But ask a few Islamic clerics their opinion and consider their replies.
KL, Seattle, US
Senator Obama and his family are the ideal first family and I will be proud again of our Presidency in America. He has a tough "row to hoe" after the mess of going to war in Iraq. I hope that the American people realize how outstanding he is and vote for him.
Sharon, Shippensburg, USA
Perhaps, he may have his own definition, and views of terrorism the Islamic countries may accept!
J. Mathew, London,
I am ashamed of what America is trying to do to a good man. They will not be satified until they can find a reason why not to elect Obama.
1. He's not black enough 2. he's too black. 3 he's muslim; 4. His christian church is too radical; 5. His wife is too aggressive
6. His wife is prejudice

Islamophobia?
jayil, london, uk
Boy oh boy, damned if you do and damned if you don't. I can just imagine the videos and comments that would show up on the internet proclaiming that Barack Obama is an Islamic mole - look who he associates with. So for the sake of expediency, you insult two young Muslim women. Everybody loses here.
