A frantic effort began at the Democratic Convention today to escape the shadow cast by Hillary and Bill Clinton — as well as their die-hard supporters — over Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.
Mrs Clinton will speak on Tuesday and her husband will take the stage on Wednesday amid angry complaints that Mr Obama’s team has failed to unify the party and heal the wounds opened up during the epic struggle for the party’s nomination this year.
Behind the scenes tonight Mr Obama and Mrs Clinton are still seeking to hammer out a compromise plan over the former First Lady's demand to have an open roll-call vote on the convention floor, a move that would highlight the fact that she won nearly as many delegates in their primary battle.
Mr Obama wants the floor vote cut off after just a few states, followed by a unanimous consent vote in his favour.
The anger, never far from the surface in Denver today, threatened to distract attention from the opening night of the convention, where Michelle Obama has the prime-time slot for a big speech telling her family’s “American story” to millions.
She will give the convention, and a television audience of millions, a personal view of her husband, Mr Obama's aides said, and his role as a father to their daughters Sasha and Malia.
The Obama campaign released short extracts of the speech tonight. Mrs Obama will say that "I come here as a wife who loves my husband and believes he will be an extraordinary president. I come here as a Mom whose girls are the heart of my heart and the center of my world – they’re the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning, and the last thing I think about when I go to bed at night. Their future – and all our children’s future – is my stake in this election.
"Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you’re going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don’t know them, and even if you don’t agree with them.
And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children – and all children in this nation – to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them.”
“And in the end, after all that’s happened these past 19 months, the Barack Obama I know today is the same man I fell in love with 19 years ago. He’s the same man who drove me and our new baby daughter home from the hospital ten years ago this summer, inching along at a snail’s pace, peering anxiously at us in the rearview mirror, feeling the whole weight of her future in his hands, determined to give her everything he’d struggled so hard for himself, determined to give her what he never had: the affirming embrace of a father’s love.”
A film about Mrs Obama's working class upbringing on the south side of Chicago will also be shown.
Senator Ted Kennedy, an early backer of Mr Obama’s, was expected to make an emotionally charged appearance after surgery and a six-week course of chemotherapy for a malignant brain tumour.

I'm so tired of Hillary supporters complaining that Hillary isn't receiving enough "respect" from Obama. The jury is out on whether Hillary wants to sink Obama, in order to run (read: lose) again in 2012. Hillary supporters: you do deserve respect. How about showing some first???
James K., Munich,
Disappointingly typical of the Clintons to risk bringing the party to its knees and with it the Democrats chance of election, all to satisfy their egos. Their most revealing hour!
johnnylava, beijing, china
It is clear that there is more interest 'down-under' in this Presidential Election than there has been for many years. This Aussie believes that a Democrat in the White House is a must for the US. I hope, in not selecting Mrs. Clinton as a running mate, it will not cost Mr. Obama the White House.
Maynard H. Gill, Sydney, Australia
How can these people change their alligences so easily? Don't they have sort of loyality?
I'm a lifelong labour voter and would never, ever vote conservative because my ideals and my core belief system is based in labour policies.
Maybe americans are different, or maybe their politics are.
kim, london,
This is a feud (if real) that the Republicans will gleefully feed upon! Even John McCain's workers wondered (re: Vice Presidency) why Hillary wasn't chosen. I think they'd prefer Hillary, as she is vehemently hated by some Republicans; so much so, it goes beyond just politics!
Michael Sullivan, Toronto, Canada
I think it is ridiculous and highly irresponsible for anyone who agrees with the democratic party's goals and positions to even consider voting for John McCain. It all seems sour grapes to me. "They" agreed to the rules of the game and then only called foul when they didn't win. It's all pride.
Lana, Champaign, USA
he time for the Clintons is over... they need to move over and make room for change, and let some one younger with newer ideas for reinvigouragating the economy come in.... the page in the book must change. Nancy Pelosi or Barbara Boxer would be much better any day over Hilary
William Wallace, Cincinnati, United States
I realized as I was reading articles and watching the news. If Hillary Clinton suppported Mr. Obama truly, she would be out there telling her people why they shouldn't vote for Mr. Mccain. Instead she laid the foundation for more years of the policies we all thought the Democrats were fighting.
walter, jacksonville, USA
Whatever happenned to doing the best for your country and people? Across the world, politicians have become corrupt, self-serving and puritanical. Is it any wonder people do not have fait in any of them?
Ron, Milton Keynes, UK
I think Bill Clinton did as much damage to Hillary's campaign as anything. He showed a really nasty side, and it was quite disappointing to see the two of them behave the way they did. I don't really believe Obama will be that different, but it has to be worth a shot, can't be worse than Bush!
Kat, Dundee,
I can't understand how anyone could say that they would vote for McCain because Hillary was not chosen. Are they voting for policies or a political philosophy? It seems not.
Ian, Frederick, USA
Hillary Obama won, please don't cry and join him for the white house.
bill, Liverpool, England
Kids in a sweet shop having a tantrum comes to mind here !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ian payne, WALSALL,
What kind of experience does Obama have?? He's has less than Hillary. You guy's have blinders on. He is a greedy, arrogant man, he should have picked Hillary and it would have been a dream ticket. That shows me a lot about him - but I will still vote for him even though I am a Hillary supporter.
Shell, Gold Canyon, US
I don't understand the Hillary Clinton supporters who are now supporting John McCain. In the end they are only shooting all Dems in the foot. Grow up and stop acting like spoiled children. While it's not the turnout Hillary Clinton wanted, she's still supporting the right team.
Beth, Cleveland, US
Sure there is a split. Obamaniacs and Clintonbots need to wake up before they hand GOP the White House. However, their fans behave like the candidates themselves and their surrogates. Clinton needs to depart NOW to allow the healing to start. Obama needs to drop his rockstar act and talk policy.
John, Glasgow, Scotland
The Clintons have destroyed Obama. It is a classic and depressing demonstration of just how self serving these politicians are who CLAIM to have their country's interest at heart.
CHARLIE, LONDON, United Kingdom
Hilary Clinton would be an appalling president. Such experience as she has shows she would be useless. The democrats should throw her and BIll out of the party as her arrogant stupidity has almost certainly guaranteed anotehr republican term.
Neil Murphy, Cromer ,
I wonder what promises did the Clintons' make to republicans or Bush? Did Bush cover-up something you did when you were in the white house? Are you suppose to pardon Bush for War crimes? You and the world knows that Obama won't pardon Bush for all the lies and crimes he has committed.
Jerry, Orlando, USA
I'm a republican that would never vote for Hiliary but I will vote for Obama. If Hiliary was the nominee the republican party would have been guarenteed to win. We had a clinton for 8 years and I don't want to live through that again. It was Hiliary that ran the White House anyway.
Nancy, Fremont, USA
Hilary, you're a bad sport and a bad loser. You and your husband whom I used to support have succeeded in tearing the Democratic party apart and undoubtedly you will have contributed mightily to Obama's defeat. Congratulations! I wouldn't now vote for you now for any reason, ever.
Carole, Istanbul, Turkey
The U.S. is facing a recession - the last thing they need is increased taxes and protectionism. The fracturing of the Democratic Party may actually be a blessing in disguise.
Vanessa, Durham, UK
Well, isn't Obama enjoying this easy ride. So, it is all Hillary's fault if he fails, eh? The problem with the Dems is not Hillary, it is that the Reps seem to have their act together. Compare McCain and Obama's question time a few weeks ago, McCain came across with conviction, Obama did not.
Amy, Catford, UK
Londonian Chris, I believe the next US president will have to take such unpopular measures that he will not seek re-election. Hilary will get a go at 64. It is a desperate situation - McCain looks antedeluvian, as for Barack - well 'one mile high and one inch deep' does not have an empty ring.
richard jones, Athens, Greece
Isn't it obvious? By undermining Obama and essentially giving McCain the White House, she thinks she can have another run at the presidency in 4 years time before it's too late. If Obama wins the election she can't do that and Clinton is finished, her dream destroyed.
Chris, London, UK
Is she a back stabber a loose cannon? Is she in politics just for herself? The media must have destorted her image!
If she can't make so called protest voters swing back in the media polls to the Democrats she will prove herself a loose cannon! Please don't disgrace yourself.
Peter, Southampton, Southampton,
That's liberals for you - underneath the wafer thin surface they are nasty, vindictive and duplicitous - self serving and never to be trusted. Thank goodness this tawdry shower will continue to self implode.
Rob, Ascot, UK
How can the US expect to export democracy to other countries when there process looks flawed. It apears that the presidency was "stolen" from Al Gore by George W Bush and the democratic nomination "stolen" from Hilary by Obama. That isn't democracy!
Ian M Jones, Reading, UK
Mrs. C has no credentials other than having been Bill´s wife, but for arrogance and a huge ego. She gamed the system every was she could but lost the primary and should go quietly. It has nothing to do with women, it´s that she is the woman she is. Now it´s time for Obama.
RD, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
Hillary Clinton was the brightest talent this primary season.
There is no comparison.
The nomination was stolen from her by fraudulent caucuses, disenfranchised voters, and a DNC on a power trip.
Much of America is in mourning.
john spencer, new york, us
Instead of stopping McCain winning (which means 4 more years of the same rubbish), what do the Dems do? Stupid petty squabbling which will have some vote neocon. And possibly more for the Libertarians, Nader and the Greens.
Tom, Kansas City, US
Michelle Obama's speech was articulate and sincere. What an amazing role model for all Americans. What an amazing First Lady.
Kate, St. Louis, United States
Hillary will be sorry if she doesn't quell the uprising she has encouraged for some time. She and Bill are still smarting from losing to Obama and are ungracious losers. If Obama's chances of election are spoiled by the Clintons' hissy fits, Hillary will have to find another party to lead.
Charles Murray, Toronto, Canada
The Clintons are clearly there for themselves and not for their Party. How can one be so divisive? Sore loser isn't in it. How anyone admires this couple beats me.
Ian Burgess, Bristol,
Are any other Britain based readers struck by the similarity between the Clintons and the Blairs - clearly in politics for themselves - fullstop.
Ian Burgess, Bristol,
Denise-Mary, I'm very surprised that someone who supports Democratic Party values enough to vote in the primaries would suddenly become a Republican in a fit of pique.
Nigel, Berkeley, CA, USA
This supposedly crisis about democrats voting for McCain because Mrs Clinton lost in the primaries seems exaggerated, pumped up to me.
Grown up people cannot be serious on this one, it makes them look like defiant children. I think that in time for the general election this mood will have settled.
Leopold Walde, Milan, Italy
It seems the Clinton supporters are so upset that they are willing to choose the greater of two evils hoping to shock the American election system back to life. If the 2000 election wasn't enough, do you think this can be? It's easier to affect the system from the Oval Office, not in an election.
maury, athens, The States
"An estimated 45% will have swung over to McCain by week's end." Why? Because they have all suddenly become enamored of the fact that he owns 8 houses?
Frank L, Berkeley, CA, USA
Let's let them enjoy their moment in the sun, since it'll be their last for quite some time. On Sunday, 27% of Clinton's supporters were voting for McCain. Today, that figure is up to 31%. An estimated 45% will have swung over to McCain by week's end. These figures are from Mainstream Media.
Denise-Mary, Seattle, USA
After years of democracy maybe Americans should try a real dictatorship and one party system. Do not forget that in old communist countries there were no illiterates and health care was for free. Nowadays the US elections look more like a bad Hollywood comedy than a serous event!
Bassim, Uppsala, Sweden
When you think of it, the Obama campaign should be a warning bell for David Cameron...If all you have is PR and spin, then eventually you will get found out! The Dems will rue the day that their bizarre system ignored the will of the majority of Democrat loyalists for a Clinton candidacy!
Nick, London,
If Hilary mess this opportunity up for a Democrat to get in the white house this year, i will never vote for her or anyone she endorses again. I will be just as honory as her delegates. They are so selfish. How about the people out here Hilary who just want a Democrat in the White House.
Gaye, Dallas, Tx, USA
The time has come for OBAMA to take charge and not allow Hillary Clinton to over shadow his nomination. Stop speaking about her and do not embrace anything to do with her egnor it and continue the campaign people who would have voted democrats will vote for democrats.
Daphne Kenward, Cambridge, UK
