Personal attacks against the Republican vice presidential candidate reached new heights today when hackers broke into Sarah Palin’s private e-mail account and published her correspondence.
The FBI and Secret Service are investigating how hackers infiltrated the Alaska governor’s personal Yahoo account and posted a number of e-mails and two family photos on the internet.
There was nothing embarrassing in the few published messages themselves but the security breach came at a time when Ms Palin’s use of personal e-mail is under intense scrutiny.
Screen grabs of the e-mail inbox posted on the web today appear to confirm accusations that Ms Palin had been using non-governmental accounts to engage in political and executive work.
A Republican activist in Alaska is trying to force her to release more than 1,100 Yahoo e-mails she withheld from a public records request in June.
Ms Palin has already handed over e-mails sent from her official account to a bipartisan investigation committee examining suggestions that she dismissed Walter Monegan, a public safety commissioner, because he refused to take action against her brother-in-law, a state trooper at the time.
Among the e-mails posted on the internet today is a message sent from Ms Palin to the vice-governor of Alaska, Sean Parnell, who is currently seeking election to Congress, and an e-mail titled draft letter to Governor Schwarzenegger.
The Washington Post revealed last month that Ms Palin’s aides were admonished for using her official e-mail address instead of her two Yahoo accounts.
"Whoops!" Frank Bailey, an aide wrote after sending an e-mail to the governor's official state address. "Frank, this is not the Governor's personal account," a secretary reminded him.
According to state law, all messages relating to the official functions of governor must be archived and not destroyed.
Alaska state lawyers said that the governor's e-mails about public business should be treated like any other public record, even if she's sent them through a private account such as Yahoo.
"The difficulty is finding out they exist," Dave Jones, an assistant attorney-general in Alaska, told the Anchorage Daily News.
There appears to be little question of the existence of two private e-mail accounts now. The Washington Post exposed one at gov.sarah@yahoo.com while the latest infiltration shows one at gov.palin@yahoo.com.
The Republican Party were furious at the hacking attack. “This is a shocking invasion of the governor’s privacy and a violation of law,” the McCain campaign said in a statement.
It said that the matter has been turned over to authorities and asked anyone in possession of Ms Palin’s documents to destroy them.
It wasn’t immediately clear how hackers broke into Ms Palin’s Yahoo account, but it could have been possible to trick the service into revealing her password knowing personal details about her that include her birth date and ZIP code. A hacker may also might have sent a forged e-mail to her account tricking her into revealing her own password.
A group calling themselves “Anonymous” claimed responsibility for the breach.

This has illustrated the fact that Sarah Palin has never actually had a "proper job". If she had she would understand a bit more about records management, archiving policy, transparency and due process. But when did a politician ever have to know anything about these management tools?
Faisal, London,
what legal charges are the people looking at for invading soemeones email. This has happened to me, but my emails were deleted in order to get rid of a threat.

What does she have to hide? Why use a yahoo account to do your public office business anyway? Sarah Palin, along with McCain, Obama, and Biden are all dubious characters with long histories of deception, it is good to have them exposed.

Either:
SP has an insufficient grasp of the intricacies and legalities of govenment to understand why personal email accounts cannot to be used for official business
or
This is an incredibly ham-fisted, amateurish attempt at being devious
Both possibilities are equally worrying.
Esther, London,
More to the point though -- why is a public official avoiding public scrutiny by having email sent to her on a private account? Smacks of someone with something to hide
Joe, Washington, USA
"And still nothing incriminating about Palin...". Apart from the fact that she used a private address for public business, which is illegal. If you're determined not to see anything wrong in that, then I suppose you won't.
"Monegan was guilty of insubordination several times." Is that official?
Forthestate, East Rudham,
Polititians want all our communications laid open for scrutiny in case of criminality. Why should their communication be private?THEY WORK FOR US,it is not a case of Rep or DEM,it is a case of right or wrong.E-mails are private for everyone or no one.Someone criminaly found out about a crime.Tragic.

Because Sarah Palin has proven herself not to be trustworthy: Troopergate, Bridge to Nowhere, Teleprompter, what else am I missing?
Steadman, San Francisco,
Why is there so much interest in Palin? She's just George W. Bush in a dress.
Michael J., New York, NY,
And still nothing incriminating about Palin...just the same old stuff.
Facts: 1. Monegan did nothing to fire a rogue cop. 2. Monegan was guilty of insubordination several times. 3. The governor had a right to fire Monegan for no reason or any reason. No graft here.

From what I've seen on other blogs, they got nothing. However I'm very surprised the website that it was posted at didn't close permanently. It was at a section of it that is known for not being so...polite or nice and most users just post under the name of anonymous instead of identifying themselves.

The motives of Anonymous are obscure. His primary motivation, however, aside from shame and fear of himself, is to disrupt the other pretenders in this world. Note his brutal assault on John Edwards' online HQ way back when Edwards was still a contender.

If Obama's emails had been hacked into you can bet there would have been outrage in the fawning media complete with calls for congressional investigations, special prosecutors and the rest. But since it was Palin the focus is on "what did they reveal?"
