A grainy YouTube video has surfaced showing Sarah Palin being blessed in her hometown church three years ago by a Kenyan pastor who prayed for her protection from “witchcraft" as she prepared to seek higher office.
The video shows Ms Palin, John McCain's surprise pick as the Republican vice-presidential candidate, standing before Bishop Thomas Muthee in the pulpit of the Wasilla Assembly of God church, holding her hands open as he asked Jesus Christ to keep her safe from “every form of witchcraft”.
“Come on, talk to God about this woman. We declare, save her from Satan,” Bishop Muthee said as two attendants placed their hands on Ms Palin’s shoulders.
“Make her way my God. Bring finances her way even for the campaign in the name of Jesus. ... Use her to turn this nation the other way around.”
Ms Palin filed campaign papers a few months later, in October 2005, and was elected governor the next year. She does not say anything on the video and keeps her head bowed throughout the blessing.
The Republican vice-presidential candidate was baptised at the church but stopped attending regularly in 2002. A spokesman for the McCain campaign declined to comment although the Associated Press reported that a person who answered the phone at the Wasilla church confirmed the video was from May 2005.
Pentecostals are conservative in their reading of the Bible and unlike most other Christians - including most evangelicals - they believe in “baptism in the Holy Spirit”. That can manifest itself through speaking in tongues, modern-day prophesy and faith healing, which includes the laying on of hands.
Maria Comella, a spokeswoman for the McCain-Palin campaign, has said that Ms Palin, who was baptised as a Roman Catholic as a newborn, attends different churches and does not consider herself Pentecostal.
On a visit to the church in June 2008, Ms Palin spoke fondly of the Kenyan pastor and told a group of young missionaries that Bishop Muthee’s prayers had helped her to become governor.
“Pastor Muthee was here and he was praying over me, and you know how he speaks and he’s so bold,” she said. “And he was praying ’Lord make a way, Lord make a way’ ... He said, ’Lord make a way and let her do this next step.’ And that’s exactly what happened."

what a load of rubbish! I am a witch and I don't do evil things! nothing in the USA suprises me, they are pathetic, as a witch I would be humiliated to have palin anywhere near me!
Franklin, London, UK
Scary how someone with such extremist religious views could potentially have her finger on the nuclear button. Sounds like something out of Tudor times. Will she claim she was possessed by witches when things go wrong?
Giles, Manchester,
Well, at least I know Sarah Palin isn't going to turn me into a Newt.
Otherwise, how is this news?
Neil, Manchester,
Exodus 22 verse 18 - Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live (KJV). i.e. "Death is the punishment for witchcraft" (CEV). The US constitution methinks is based on the bible and Governor Palin has every right to rebuke witches, condemn witchcraft, and has the freedom to support those who do the same!
Maurice, London , UK
If you are going to be religious, you may as well do it properly. Why stop at believing stories of the resurrection, Lazarus, walking on water, Satan and his demonic hordes? You might as well throw in witches as well.
In fact, witchcraft isn't nearly as crazy as most of the things in the Bible.
Daniel, Belfast,
Don't worry Sarah, since Harry Potter took care of Lord Voldemort, I think we can all feel safe for now...
Andy, Seattle, USA
Oh, if only this sort of protection were available to our politicians 315 years ago in the towns of Salem, Ipswich and Andover in the Massachusetts Bay Colony when we were still under colonial rule during the reign of William III and Mary II...
Scott Benowitz, Rye, New York, U.S.A.
I wonder if all those female voters still think Palin is 'one of them'..
Owen, London, UK
"Pentecostals are conservative in their reading of the Bible and unlike most other Christians - including most evangelicals - they believe in baptism in the Holy Spirit.
Excuse me, but when did holy rolling hocus pocus and speaking in tongues become "conservative" by anyone's definition?
rb, Columbia, SC, USA
I think the economic crash should demonstrate more than ever to Americans that they can keep electing Republicans who promise the world, spend trillions on war and deny evolution, or they can wake up and realise they're not the power they used to be and elect sensible, grown up leadership.
Owen, London, UK
Ooo the witches! Pathetic.
Religion has NO place, whatsoever in government. People that espose it are either naive, lying or both.
Dan, London, UK
So someone thinks so many of us are anti christian? NONSENSE. I am anti hypocrisy. In this video I do not see Christians worshipping God. I see silly people worshipping their faith. For them, as for many fundamentalists (Islamic, Jew, or whatever) have placed their religion above God.
FH Kittredge, Albuquerque, USA
The only thing missing were the snakes. LOL!!!
kim grundy, chicago, IL, USA
Having read all of the comments so far,it's interesting to see that so many anti-christian comments are so angry and bitter. Isn't it supposed to be liberty ... for all. It isn't liberty if you are limited to one choice. Has evolution made anyone a better person yet?? Anyone found the missing link?
Natasha, Tallahassee, USA
Palin, like Bush, his officials and party members, may not seem comparable to the Talibans and their methods, but preemptive wars - invading foreign countries, bombing
the population and killing hundreds of thousands is actually
against the Christian faith, to which they profess fervently.
lena, vienna, austria
As a pagan this scares me. Evil is against our religion and to have a woman running for office do such an act....it takes us back to the burning times. Course given the support she has here I think its safe to assume that had a Pagan tried to get into office the same people would be upset.
Angela, Asheville, USA
Nicole from Portland,
the religious conservatives in America may be bad, but you cannot seriously compare them to the Taliban. Have they kidnapped and decapitated those for behaving in an un-Christian way? burnt down girls' schools? banned music, alcohol et cetera?
Daniel, Belfast,
Cool, I want a blessing like that. Looks like it's worked, she is now running for VP.
This bloke is much nicer than Obama's pastor who claims AIDS was created by white scientists to kill the black man.
Palin's choice in spiritual advisor is better than Obama's.
James, London,
Such behaviour is beyond belief in an educated person of today (those who have the misfortune to lack access to erudition are, in theory, easier preys to wicked, mutheecal scoundrels that people the earth). No comment or description has the capacity to open the horror of such palinal, damaging mind.
Manuel Amago Diaz, Murcia, Spain
I don't know what is more scarey ,Palin or the people congratulating her on these comments. Witches trying to possess someone? Sure believe in god if you want too.But this voodoo hoodoo? When does this madness stop ,with witch trials? I am glad I am nowhere near this parish ,things might too hot!
Dully, Redhill, UK
Manchester Margaret - You're so right. We'd be in, say, the Christian equivalent of Iran, or Taleban controlled Afghanistan.
How many people had to be burned at the stake before we got ourselves out of that particular mess?
BTW in the middle ages belief in the existence of witches was a sin
Colin, Glasgow, UK
Incredible in this modern society, so many short sighted people believe in fairy tales. No wonder we are in such a mess. Religion should be outlawed, and society will be better off. It's a sop to the weak-willed who can't come to terms with their own mortality. You live, you die, that's it.
Paul Downes, Milton Keynes, UK
It is a small comfort to see that it's not just the US that has fundamentalist, fanatical religiosity (ie Drew) in its midst. Their extremism is rivaled only by that of groups like the Taliban, a fact which completely escapes most of these zealots.
Nicole, Portland, USA
Complete unmitigated insanity. Awesome.
Lucie, London, UK
God's ways are mysterious. How does ANYONE profess to KNOW how God works?
Remember Galileo. Science and God are not mutually exclusive. God works in many ways, and Science tries to explain how He works. How DARE anyone profess to KNOW how God works? The presumptuousness of some Christians!
Bertrand, Singapore,
Good for you, Sarah Palin! If more people in political office shared your humility towards your God, we wouldn't be in the society decline that we find ourselves in.
Margaret, Manchester, UK
Hallelujah!
May the Good Lord protect her from witches, demons, incubi, reason, common sense, science and any other devilry which might prevent her from assuming the office of VP! Amen!
Tikhon Savrasov, london, UK
Infinitely preferable to the racist, anti American ravings of Obama's church
Jeff Hyman, Peyia, Cyprus
Drew, please provide details of the evidence you have that would prove the existence of this "Holy Spirit".
Cronan, London, UK
some bloke walking on water is more credible than scientific theories of evolution? vastly more credible indeed! what a joke! religion solves all? or causes more problems?! the latter i think!
and even worse is that a possible future VP believes in witchcraft! Surely even worse than Bush?
James, manchester, UK
"....' He said Lord make a way and let her do the next step.' And that's exactly what happened"
Wow. He said a prayer, and it came true. It must have been the prayer.
And now she's protected against witchcraft. Which is good, what with people being struck down by witches all the time.
Steve, Leeds, UK
Really, think about it - do you seriously want to vote for her and her party. This is the 21st Century, not the Middle Ages.
Bill, Seattle, WA,
"more credibility to the Holy Spirit than to the so called Big Bang myth...yes MYTH!
Drew, Nottingham"
Thank you for making my day.
That is the finest piece of sarcasm I have read for years. It truly lampoons those who really think all the world's species lived in walking range of the Ark
Paul Williams, Northampton, UK
McCain is finished if he continues associating with this woman. It's absolutely unbelievable! I have seen this kind of thing among simple, uneducated rural folk in Zimbabwe. I never expected someone who might one day be president of USA participating. I suppose human folly is the same everywhere!
Charan Muzaya, London, UK
Palin is inspiring creationists everywhere. Clearly evolution hasn't reached Nottingham yet (eh Drew).
The meek shall inherit the earth? As long as it isn't those right wing fundamentalist nutjobs.
Simon, London,
Anyone who wants to vote for a person that believes in witches should not be allowed to vote at all.
Paul Williams, Northampton, UK
Fantastic... World leaders (if all goes to pot) believing in the evils of witchcraft and in the physical power of 'Satan'... Last time this happened in the 1500's and 1600's, thousands of innocent men and women across Europe and the new world were killed...
Rob, Brighton,
"Big Bang myth... yes MYTH!"
Erm - nice one Drew. I think we've got a good idea on what Mrs Palin's policies will be based around - unfortunately it will not be secular.
Nick, London,
What an inspiring video. For too long politics and the media have been hijacked by the tired old neo-paganism of the liberal establishment. It is time for Christendom to reclaim its rightful place in the West. Some will sneer at Palin but it is the Liberal ideology that has had its day.
Chas, Gibraltar, Gibraltar
Drew, Nott
If someone could predict the existence of electricity, nuclear power, neutron, proton and then actually proceed to find it, why should I doubt the same reasoning when it predicts the Big Bang? The real myth is the bible story which was meant to be an allegory for a much more subtle truth
Charan Muzaya, London, UK
Drew, it's interesting that you can outright call the big bang theory a myth, yet you are happy to accept stories of witchcraft and magic as gospel.
Please direct me to your dictionary that defines myths as theories accepted by the overwhelming majority of intellectuals.
Thanks in advance!
Andrew, London,
the big bang is a myth but god creating the world in 6 days 10,000 years ago is a fact? people who accept scientific EVIDENCE for the big bang and evolution have room for religion, too bad religious fanatics can't do the same. god gave us a mind to see beyond a book that was written 3000 years ago.
rudy, london,
Well done Sarah - with you all the way standing up for what YOU believe is right....not like the politically correct lemmings that attempt to dictate to our society (especially here in the UK) today.
For my money, more credibility to the Holy Spirit than to the so called Big Bang myth...yes MYTH!
Drew, Nottingham,
