Picture gallery: Sarah Palin fashion | Recriminations drown out McCain | Republicans launch ground war against Obama | Embedded in the Obama camp
Sarah Palin is to forgo the designer wardrobe bought for her by the Republican Party, and will go back to wearing her own clothes, she has told supporters
To emphasise the point that she really does have simple tastes, the Alaskan governor appeared at a campaign stop in Asheville, North Carolina last night dressed in jeans. Her own.
The Republican vice presidential candidate has been dogged by criticism over her expensive wardrobe, after the Politico website reported that the Republican National Committee had spent around $US150,000 (£96,495) buying outfits from her from up-market stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.
Now she is starting to fight back. At a rally in Tampa, Florida, earlier on Sunday, she pointed out to the crowd that she was wearing her own jacket and insisted that from now on she would be wearing her own clothes bought in Anchorage, Alaska.
"Those clothes, they are not my property, just like the lighting and the staging and everything else the RNC purchased," said Mrs Palin, who was dressed in a simple pink jacket and black skirt.
"I'm not taking them with me. I'm back to wearing my old clothes from my favourite consignment shop in Anchorage, Alaska," she said.
Mrs Palin, who has sold herself to the American public as a moose-hunting hockey Mom with simple tastes, told the crowd that her jewellery was also locally bought - and at the lower end of the price spectrum.
Pointing to her earrings, she told the crowd: "These are from Todd's mom, who is a native American up in Alaska. Native American. Native Alaskan. And my wedding ring, it's in Todd's pocket because it hurts when I shake hands. A $35 (£22) wedding ring from Hawaii that I bought myself.
"I always thought, 'It's not what it's made of. It's what it represents,' " she said.
"Twenty years later, happy to wear it."
A spokesman for John McCain said the designer clothes would be donated to charity after the election on November 4.

The point is not how much the men's suits cost - but the fact that they bought them with their own money.
Tracy, Fort Mill, USA
They think it's so easy to fool the public, and alas! some people are always ready and willing to be fooled.
Tanim , Newcastle Upon Tyne , UK
Talk about swaying in the wind. In the scale of what is being spent on all the political PR machine in the US her clothing was trivial; maybe wrong but still trivial (but then I think such sums of money on political PR is a real waste when people are not getting food/healthcare/etc - GB please note)
Ian, Norwich,
If she must wear jeans ok, but does she have to iron them!
Charles, Edinburgh, Scotland
Seriously, the Republicans are really really clutching at straws.
Ross, Redditch, England
Why is $150,000 spent on clothes by the RNC dreadful but the tens of millions spent by Obama on advertising absolutely fine ?
With Americans facing hard times but Obama awash with money and apparently with the presidency in the bag, why doesn't he help a few good causes. The media is biased !
Luis, London, UK
Having to dress up in the first place smacks of perceived unsuitability when lined up amongst the platform ladies. The outfits looked quite standard dress code, useful for any formal do. Looking like a classroom assistant in ironed jeans suits Mrs Palin. That's what the moms and pops really want
James, Beckton, East London
Bertie Becker, London - It's easy to blame "society" for women's "need to look fab", but only it's human nature, not society at all. No women are forced to look fab, they do so and compete with eachother to attarct males. It's survival. It's human nature. The better you luck the more you attract.
Chris, Preston, UK
She either wears her wedding ring on her right hand, shakes hands back to front or is talking nonsense. I know which I think it is...
Sarah, Bristol,
I found her in that speech to be very personable and charismatic, she seemed like a genuine person... I dont think anyone in politics can point the shallow/spin finger, it just shows hypocrisy in my view.
Oli Burgess, Scranton, PA, USA
Palin just doesn't get it. She could have easily looked chic in less expensive clothes and only stopped wearing the designer items when it came out. Looking at her record in Alaska that seems to be her m.o. , taking advantage of her position until she gets caught in some lies.
Kate , Toronto,
It appears to be a case of upholstering the deck chairs on the titanic
Cal, London, UK
Well said S Haugh, Leeds. It's society that expects women to "look fab" all the time and would insult Palin to the point of homophobia if she didn't look like a babe - and now we turn around and start criticising becuase she does what society expects all along! What pathetic sexist hypocrisy.
Bertie Becker, London,
If it gets any worse for the Republicans, she may have to ditch the wardrobe altogether.
David Masu, Zürich, Switzerland
Look forward to the Palin Christmas doll complete with designer clothes and moose hunting gear, and speaking " I'm just a regular hockey mom- love me " and only $ 99-99
iain rae, tunbridge Wells, T.W.
Sheesh - talk about shallow! Her clothes budget is revealed and suddenly she doesn't want to wear them anymore. She is like a flag, flapping in whatever direction the wind takes her.
Carl, London, UK
The $150,000 spent by the RNC dressed Palin's entire family, so yes, this was a significant and unnecessary expense. It is not a sexist attack to question such profligacy. Can't wait to see the exit of Palin & McCain from the political scene.
Grant, Perth, Australia
The party and her, have been criticised for the clothes, so she has listened and done something about it. Not really a big issue. In the U.K. there was never an issue with Diana's clothes budget. Perhaps we could get the Queen into a pair of jeans.
Tom, London, U.K.
In the interests of gender fairness I would like to know the cost of the male candidates suits. The matter is trivial, but the issue itself shows how still, in 2008, female and male candidates are called into account for completely different reasons. Guess which sex gets the serious consideration?
S Haugh, Leeds, England
is hse wearing ironed jeans? OMG. She CANNOT be allowed to be VP to the 'Leader of the Free World' in ironed jeans. ( haven't decided if I'm being sarcastic yet...)
Paul, Colne, Lancs,
The R's really are drinking in last chance saloon now..Will someone please just ring the Bell for Time?
S, LONDON, UK
For heavens sake one cannot have it both ways, what does it matter $150,000.00 is nothing in the scheme of the ridiculously expensive American Election Campaign!!!!
Vivienne, Melbourne, Australia
Silly woman - she expects people to believe that she is a simple tastes girl? Then she should have refused to wear it if she is so principled. Too litte, and it appears - too late. Let's just see the back of her local store jacket as soon as possible.
Stuart Murray, Amsterdam, Netherlands
All goes to show her lack of judgement! So easy to be wise after the event.
tim, exeter, uk
wow! she saves the world and she's not even elected yet. what a gal!
trovato, cape town ,
Whilst a trivial matter in the importance of domestic and international politics, it does indicate the Republicans sensitivities. If Palin or the Republican Party strategists believe this is going to really change or influence people's votes they are surely clutching at straws!
R Bimrose, Melbourne, Australia
