Who's the greatest? The Times US presidential rankings | Candidate profiles | McCain comes out fighting | Neo-Nazis charge with assassination plot
Barack Obama will make an audacious prime-time pitch to the nation tonight in one of the most ambitious advertising investments in American political history.
The Democratic candidate has booked a 30-minute slot on three national networks that will be aired just as Americans tune in to watch the baseball World Series.
The advertisements, which his campaign says cost about $1 million (£640,000) each, mark the first time in 16 years that a presidential candidate has aired commercials of that length on broadcast networks. The billionaire maverick Ross Perot paid for 11 half-hour adverts during his unsuccessful 1992 bid as an independent. However, they cost a fraction of the record $230 million that the Illinois Senator has spent on television advertising in his campaign for the White House. Mr Obama’s campaign said that the advert would focus on the economy.
Three major networks, CBS, NBC and Fox, have all juggled their schedules to broadcast the advertisements at 8pm. Fox has taken the unusual step of delaying tonight’s World Series game.
Univision, the highest-rated Spanish-language network, will also air a 30-minute advert. The only major network that will not be broadcasting one is ABC, which could not reach a deal with the campaign.
The seizure of prime-time schedules shows how easily Mr Obama can outspend his Republican rival. “Obama has rewritten the playbook on running a presidential campaign,” Evan Tracey, of the Campaign Media Analysis Group, said. “There’s nothing he can’t afford to do.”
Mr McCain is limited to spending $84.1 million because he accepted taxpayers’ funds for the election, but his campaign has teamed up with the Republican National Committee to share advertising costs. These are likely to reach $130 million in television advertising by election day.

hey jeremy;
seems the republicans in power are the biggest socialists the u.s. has ever seen but instead of spreading the wealth to the regular citizens they're spreading the wealth to US Banks, Financial Institutions and now talk about socializing the US Auto Industry?
Frank, Chicago, US
Typical of Palin in her response to Obama showing what the Democrats will do. The Republicans say nothing of how they would do any better. It is just like David Cameron over here. All waffle and no substance from either Republicans or Conservatives.
Gary Hills, Stevenage, England
Anyone can be rich in the USAt!! But for every millionaire there are thousands of very poor, disenfranchised and hopeless people. Spreading the wealth sounds like a good idea to most people in the world - but not to Americans still living the propaganda of the cold war!
Tim, seoul, Korea
If only Obama really were a socialist and successfully introduced a national health service, an effective welfare safety net, etc. to the USA. One certainty if the European experience is any guide, is that once they have them the American people won't easily let anyone take them away.
Alan, Valencia, Spain
AGAIN i dont care that its 3% that makes a huge difference if your making 30 billion a year. Its Jobs is what it is. Now more will go over seas even more simply cause there corporate tax rate is half of ours. And yes his idea of spreading the wealth is BAD were not Europe thats why we left.
jeremy Charles, Dallas, USA
Obama's birth certificate has been seen, touched, held, and photographed by FactCheck. Anyone who thinks this is still a conspiracy is crazy. http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/born_in_the_usa.html
Ed P, Cincinnati, OH, USA
Birth certificate doesn't mean anything... all a birth certificate does is tell you where the actual real record of your birth was made... that's the official record and is the only one which counts.
paul cooke, gloucester,
Actually, no one has seen an original, certified birth certificate, and State of Hawaii officials who have reviewed the only "copy" he placed on his website have acknowledged that it is not an official document. (Privacy laws make it impossible for ANYONE to see another's birth certificate.)
Bob Evans, Lowestoft, Suffolk, Back home in Blighty
Jeremy Charles:
All this 'socialist' propaganda being spread by McCain is rubbish. Increasing taxes by 3% on income earned over $250k?Big deal! It means they can cut the taxes of 95% of Americans, who NEED a break! Its the same taxation as B.Clinton, its not Marxism!!!
Will, Leicester, England
@ jeremy Charles:
If your business is going to fail because the tax rate on earnings over $250K is 38% instead of 35%, I think you have other problems.
Neil, Perth, Australia
Paul: Do you not want to have actual details on how your potential future President will run the country? Most citizens get to listen to the President for a few minutes at a time and only a few times a year. This is a good thing.
Shane, Kirkland, WA, USA
Why does it take half an hour to say what's needed? It sounds like a big yawn and an opportunity for a huge pratfall. He'd better be good. A greater risk to the Democrat campaign than the McCain camp, I suspect.
Paul Freeman, London, England
What about his citizenshi?! He IS American- where have you been?
Maureen, Egham, UK
Yeah hes a citizen but I rather not be a Germany. Socialism in the US will bring unrest. Spreading the wealth is not what this country is about. Anybody can be rich in the US all it takes is an idea. Now your gonna punish the successful in turn give to the not. Vote McCain sorry Obama goin to far.
jeremy Charles, Dallas, USA
what on earth does that mean, a man with a mother from Kansas and born in Hawaii, the 50th state of America, I think that makes it qute clear!
Alex, Mirandola, Italy
What about the questions over Obama'a citizenship?
Mark, London, UK
