Strachan pays tribute to 'best mate' Burns
Gordon Strachan, the Celtic manager, paid tribute to Tommy Burns, who has died from cancer aged 51. Burns spent 25 years as player, manager and coach at Celtic Park, and also played against Strachan. He was first found to have skin cancer in 2006 and, although he received treatment, it returned in March.
“No disrespect to football, but being Tommy's mate is the best part of coming to Celtic,” Strachan said. “Through his intelligence, common sense and humour, he made me understand what Glasgow was all about. If I didn't have him, I would have gone off my head. He kept me sane at times.”
Warnock tries again
Neil Warnock, the Crystal Palace manager, will meet John Bostock and his father today in a final attempt to convince the young midfield player to sign a professional contract at the Coca-Cola Championship club. Palace expected Bostock to sign for them when his schoolboy deal ended last week, but the 16-year-old wants to join Tottenham Hotspur, who are willing to pay £500,000 for him.
Riise in fear of exit
John Arne Riise wants to extend his contract at Liverpool, which has one year left, but fears that he may be sold. The Norway left back, who moved to Anfield seven years ago, has been linked with Valencia. “Liverpool have sent mixed signals,” he said. “If they don't make an approach, I'll have to contact them. I've been in the game for so long and they did not offer me a contract, I can see what is going on.”
Clichy eyes new deal
Gaël Clichy is close to signing a new four-year deal with Arsenal. The left back has two years left on his contract, which he signed three years ago. He was voted in the PFA team of the year this season, having played in every league match in the campaign. “We're at the end of our discussions,” Clichy said. “I would love to stay many years at Arsenal and leave my mark on the club.”
Bellamy aims for 50
Craig Bellamy will win his 50th cap for Wales if he plays against Iceland on May 28. The West Ham United forward, who has scored 15 goals for his country, has made only one appearance for his club since October because of stomach and groin problems. Jack Collison, his club team-mate, is also in the squad. Wales play Holland on June 1.
Lowe back in power
Rupert Lowe, the former chairman of Southampton, has returned to power at the Coca-Cola Championship club. Lowe has joined forces with Michael Wilde, his successor, and together they control 46 per cent of the shares in the club. Leon Crouch, Keith Wiseman and Patrick Trant have resigned as directors as part of the deal.
