A Kenny Dalglish penalty gave the lead to Jock Stein’s side, who would go on to win the title and Scottish Cup that season, but Drew Jarvie’s headed equaliser took the game into extra-time and Davie Robb came on as a substitute to secure Aberdeen’s first trophy since the 1970 Scottish Cup.
A year after becoming manager, Ally MacLeod had made good on his extravagant promises. He would leave the following spring to take charge of Scotland, but having also hammered Rangers 5-1 in the semi-final, it was clear a new force was rising in the north. [The numbers refer to a photograph, which is not carried on the website.]
Joe Smith The midfielder followed brother Jimmy to Aberdeen and made 142 appearances, but in one game in 1977 he was knocked out by Rangers captain John Greig, who retaliated to an elbow by Smith and was sent off. He joined Motherwell in 1978, then Peterhead and Dunfermline. He worked as a hospital porter and lives in Aberdeen
Duncan Davidson The striker spent nine years at Pittodrie, scoring the opening goal in Alex Ferguson’s first championship season of 1979-80. He left in 1981 for Tulsa Roughnecks and was also top scorer for Sea Bee in Hong Kong. He is a financial consultant and runs Aberdeen’s former players’ association
Stuart Kennedy The right-back was a fitness fanatic but missed the 1983 Cup Winners’ Cup final triumph with an injury that would end his career. He won eight Scotland caps and became a publican. He now lives in Grangemouth
Doug Rougvie The fearsome left-back made 278 Dons appearances and won one Scotland cap against Northern Ireland in 1983, one of six Dons in the side. Joined Chelsea the following year, and later managed in the Highland League. Has worked as a draftsman and is now a Rangers youth coach and scout
Ally MacLean Arrived from Ayr in 1976 and was reserve keeper to Bobby Clark. Joined Motherwell in 1980, the third time MacLeod had signed him. He was assistant manager at Stranraer, and is now contract sales manager for Poggenpohl kitchens
Bobby Clark In 1971 he set a British record of 13 consecutive clean sheets and left Pittodrie in 1982, after 17 years, to coach in Zimbabwe and manage New Zealand’s national team. He won 17 Scotland caps and is head soccer coach at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana
Willie Garner The centre-half broke a leg in 1978 which led to Alex McLeish getting his chance. Moved to Celtic in 1981, but played just three games before becoming Alloa manager. Ferguson made him his No2 in 1984 and he also managed Berwick. He works in banking and coaches junior side Glenrothes
Dom Sullivan Spent seven years at Clyde while working for British Rail, but went full-time with Aberdeen in 1976. He moved to Celtic for £92,000 in 1979 and won the First Division title with Morton in 1986. He then managed Alloa, had a variety of other coaching roles and runs a hotel near Falkirk
Chic McClelland Joined Aberdeen in 1969 and later captained Montrose to the Second Division title in 1985. He became an SFA community coach and is now Aberdeen’s youth development manager
Neil Cooper Played only 12 Dons games due to Miller and McLeish’s unbreakable defensive partnership. Won the Scottish Cup with St Mirren in 1987 and also played for Hibs before returning to Pittodrie as reserve coach, then No2 to Paul Hegarty. After leaving when Ebbe Skovdahl took charge, he now oversees Aberdeen’s youth teams
John McMaster The elegant midfielder made 314 appearances and joined Morton in 1987, where he became a coach. He also worked in insurance in Greenock and now scouts for Aberdeen
George Campbell A winger who made nine appearances in four years and joined South Melbourne in 1978. He is believed to still live in Australia
Ian Fleming The midfielder arrived in 1975 from Kilmarnock, but headed to Sheffield Wednesday three years later. He was Brechin manager then ran the Dons’ youth coaching centre in Dundee. He now scouts on future opposition for manager Jimmy Calderwood
Willie Miller This was his first trophy as captain. He added three titles, three Scottish Cups, a League Cup, the Cup Winners’ Cup and the Super Cup. He won 65 Scotland caps and played 797 times for the Dons, but endured a barren three years as manager. Has also owned a Harry Ramsden’s franchise and is now Aberdeen’s executive football consultant
Joe Harper The Dons’ record scorer with 199 goals. He left for Everton in 1972 then joined Hibs for a Scottish record £120,000 and, after returning to Aberdeen, played in the 1980 title success. One of the Copenhagen Five, he was banned by the SFA in 1975, though this was lifted and he made the 1978 World Cup squad. He is a newspaper columnist and after-dinner speaker
Drew Jarvie A club-record £70,000 prised him from Airdrie in 1972 and he hit 130 goals in 339 games. He was No2 at St Mirren and Dundee, returning to Pittodrie in 1988 as reserve coach then assisting former Dons boss Ian Porterfield in South Korea. Now works in his son’s electrical business in Aberdeen
Jim Shirra The midfielder spent a season at Pittodrie before joining Dundee, along with £40,000, in exchange for Gordon Strachan. He works in Grangemouth’s petrochemical industry
