2 for 1 at Pizza Express
Career-best figures from Gareth Andrew and Moeen Ali helped Worcestershire Royals earn a tense 12-run win in their floodlit NatWest Pro40 first division match against Yorkshire Carnegie at New Road.
Andrew, the fast bowler, claimed five for 31 and Ali, the spinner, three for 32 to dismiss the visiting team for 178 after they had been set 191 for victory.
Their combined efforts denied Yorkshire a first win in any competition for six weeks, even though they were against a Worcestershire side whose bowling attack had been severely depleted by injuries to Kabir Ali (back), Ashley Noffke (ankle), Ian Fisher (broken finger) and Simon Jones (knee).
Yorkshire made an encouraging start to their run chase with Andrew Gale and Jacques Rudolph putting on 57 in ten overs before Andrew grabbed two wickets in two balls.
After dismissing Gale for 24, he removed Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and with the fifth ball of his next over saw off Anthony McGrath courtesy of a fine diving catch at point by Stephen Moore.
Although unsettled by Andrew's three scalps in seven balls, Yorkshire recovered slightly thanks to a 51-run stand between Rudolph and Adam Lyth. Their partnership ended when Lyth was bowled by Ali, who followed up that wicket by removing Jonathan Bairstow next ball.
Yorkshire were reeling again shortly afterwards when Ali struck to dismiss Tim Bresnan. Ali was in the centre of the action again when his throw ran out Rudolph after the South African had smacked 68, including six fours, off 87 balls.
It was a blow from which Yorkshire could not recover. Rich Pyrah contributed a battling 27, but he fell victim to Chris Whelan before Andrew grabbed Yorkshire's last two wickets.
Earlier, the Royals, having won the toss, made 190 for nine, with Daryl Mitchell top scoring with 49, including four fours, off 59 balls.
The home team's innings got off to the worst possible start when Vikram Solanki edged the first ball to Rudolph at first slip off Deon Kruis. The Worcestershire captain's dismissal, however, was followed by a valuable partnership between Steve Davies and Moore. Davies, however, had a fortunate let-off when he was dropped on the mid-wicket boundary by Adam Lyth off Kruis while on ten.
The 23-year-old opener, the subject of a 28-day notice of approach by Yorkshire last month, went on to make 46 before being bowled by a full-length delivery from Bresnan.
He hit eight fours off 37 balls and put on 68 with Moore, who then fell in Bresnan's next over when his attempted big hit resulted in a catch behind for Bairstow.
At 69 for three, the Royals were starting to struggle against the visiting team's attack, which included Matthew Hoggard, who is thought to be wanted by Worcestershire for next season.
He was called up for his first one-day appearance for Yorkshire since their Friends Provident Trophy semi-final defeat against Essex last July and celebrated by encouraging Ali to play on to his middle stump for 12.
Next to go was Ben Smith, ran out following a smart throw by Pyrah, to leave the Royals in trouble at 90 for five.
Pyrah then turned wicket-taker by accounting for Gareth Batty who was followed by Andrew, with Mitchell and Whelan both becoming run-out victims in the quest for vital runs.
