- Lance Armstrong got his technology wrong last weekend when he attempted to post a video clip on his Twitter page but instead managed to leave nothing on the tweet except his e-mail address, which included the initials JP. Given that he has more than 700,000 Twitter followers, his e-mail inbox was victim to sudden overload, a point that he explained in a later, successfully posted video clip.
He decided to lock horns with one particular author, who had sent in e-mails which read: “Sir Lancelot rides again, doper, cheat, fraud” and “EPO, Lance, EPO!”
However, he got in his riposte by reading out repeatedly the sender’s name — Andrew D. Hogg — and he doesn’t leave it there. He reads out Hogg’s e-mail address twice, too. Hogg’s identity has now become a subject of chatroom fascination. And Armstrong has a new e-mail address.
- The “JP” in Lance Armstrong’s now defunct e-mail address stands for “Juan Pelota”. Pelota is Spanish for ball. When Armstrong beat cancer, he emerged from the battle having had one testicle removed.
In downtown Austin, Texas, his home city, Armstrong has a share in a new bike shop, Mellow Johnny’s, which has the Juan Pelota café attached. He is also said to check into hotels under the Juan Pelota code name.
- Contrary to the retiring flower of her playing days, Justine Henin is embracing public life and this week will appear in the hit French soap opera Plus Belle La Vie. Her role is not too demanding — she plays herself — but this is like Andy Murray appearing in EastEnders. God forbid.
Not content with that, Henin is also going down the reality TV route. Martina Navratilova did I’m a Celebrity . . . Get Me Out of Here! and Monica Seles was an early casualty in the American version of Strictly Come Dancing, but Henin has an entire show to herself, De twaalf werken van Justine Henin, which, of course, is Flemish for “The twelve labours of . . .” Her labours include cooking, singing, modelling and playing football with Anderlecht. None of them involves returning to professional tennis.
