Stuart Broad, the Leicestershire fast bowler, has been called into England's Commonwealth Bank Series squad for the best-of-three finals against Australia as a replacement for injured duo Chris Tremlett and Jon Lewis, who are flying back to England.
The 20-year-old has been practising at the MRF pace bowling foundation in Chennai and will arrive in Australia tomorrow, making himself available for the first game against Ricky Ponting's side at the 95,000-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday.
"Chris has got a back injury that will definitely prevent him taking any further part in the finals," Duncan Fletcher, the England coach explained. "Jon Lewis was one of those ones where we were not prepared to risk it with injuries to the bowlers - Jimmy Anderson being injured. We didn't want to risk it any further so he is going to go back. It's difficult at the moment to say what it is. It is around that Achilles area so they are going to go back and have a really good look at it in the UK."
Despite being overlooked for this campaign, Broad is now in the reckoning for a World Cup spot. He was two days into a ten-day programme in India, set up by Kevin Shine, England's bowling coach, for those named for the A tour of Bangladesh.
Broad played a handful of one-day internationals against Pakistan last September but lost out to Tremlett in the selection stakes here.

The bowling "coach " seeme to want to clone our bowlers. Broad has a natural action so he is told to change to suit the "model" No one could have told FS how to bowl and maybe our young bowlers should do the same.

There has to be something wrong with our physical conditioning and training programme for there to have been so many injuries at critical times.
Insofar as our bowlers are concerned the individual action of our fast bowlers always looks suspect.
If only Freddie Trueman was around to show them the advantage of a smooth, rhythmical and progressive run-up, delivering maximum velocity at minimum effort, with deadly accuracy then we might get somewhere.
