It is gearing up to be the biggest row between an Australian and the passionate cricket fans of Pakistan since Darrell Hair told Inzamam-ul-Haq to stop sulking and take the field at the Brit Oval last summer. Shane Warne’s list of his top 50 cricketers has attracted howls of protest after he placed Waqar Younis in a lowly 45th place. Of the dozens of comments left on Times Online, more than half complained that Warne placed the toe-crusher from Vehari, the man with the best strike-rate of any bowler to have taken 200 Test wickets, lower on his list than the likes of Stephen Harmison and Bruce Reid.
“Waqar at his peak would have made even Bradman look like a novice, Warne’s just jealous, like most Aussies, that they didn’t produce a bowler of Waqar’s calibre,” Saad, from London, wrote, which may raise chortles in the McGrath household.
Perhaps tempers will be calmed by Warne’s selection of three Pakistan players today. Those who suggest that Warne’s top ten will be full of his mates may also reflect on him placing Steve Waugh, who captained Australia to 15 consecutive wins, at No 26.
There are many bones of contention (Tim May higher than Michael Vaughan for goodness sake!) but this is a personal list and Warne can choose whom he wishes. After all, he is the one who will meet frosty silence from Kevin Pietersen in the Rose Bowl dressing-room after placing his Hampshire teammate at No 30.
And who will be Warne’s greatest cricketer, to be revealed on Saturday? Ricky Ponting? Brian Lara? Ashley Giles? Maybe to placate Pakistani readers he will go for Wasim Akram, although several comments on Times Online speculate that Warne will name himself. Surely not.

My guess of Warne's remaining 10 greatest players:
1. Bradman 2.Brian Lara 3. Ricky Ponting 4.Sachin 5. Vivian Richards 6.Mcrath 7.Gary Sobers 8.Richard Hadlee 9.Murali
10.Barry Richards
Vasu, Singapore.

Yeah but Steve, those 10 mates tht ur talking about, not every1 has reached a GREAT level yet.
And yes ur rite, it's his personal list .... so he can lyke whoever he wants !
Hamza, Karachi, Pakistan
From an Aussie who has been fortunate enough to watch Warnies career all my life I'll throw my hat into the ring.
1st to all whinging this is Warney's personal list so he can put whoever he wants where ever he wants. Yes some of these decisions do seem "personal" but its his list.
2nd Shane Warne may well be the best spin bowler of all time, but he has also proved one of the dumbest professional sporting personalities many of us have ever seen (Shane you would be hard pressed to argue) & this is probably a more competitive sporting arena globally than test cricket currently is.
On a couple of the decisions:
Steve Waugh did get the captains job ahead of Warne which may have influenced the lowly selection of one of the toughest ever to don the Baggy Green. Why are his bowling figures not displayed?
Akhtar ahead of Waqar?
All those criticising Bruce Reid obviously dont know how tough that guy was continuing to bowl after snapping in half
My tip for number 1 is Mark Waugh or Warne
Kirkus, London,
I think:
1. Wasim Akram
2. Ponting
3. Brian Lara
4. Inzamam
5. Tendulkar
6. Murali
7. Shane Warne
8. Ambrose
9. Mcgrath
10. Shane Bond

KP at 30 should be happy and satisfied. There were many big batsmen in world cricket ad being at no30 with his agressive and childish thinking...
Akil, Frankfurt am Main, Germany
Whether you agree or disagree with him, it's just one person's opinion and he can pick whoever he likes. It's only natural for him to pick players that he's played with or against a lot. In the last 5 years or so, Don Bradman and Richie Benaud both came out with their best teams of all time and I didn't really agree with all their choices either. I'm sure he'll rate Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting and McGrath highly as would anyone. I think he'll also probably have Mark Taylor and Ian Healy ranked higher than some might expect, seeing as they were a big part of his career.
Ian, Mackay, Qld, Australia
It has to be Sachin or Brian Lara....These two players have been in wrong teams and always under tremendous pressure. Sachin will probably score over Lara
Ameya, Hamilton, New Zealand
Muttiah Muralitharan, surely?
John Peters, Swansea,
I want to know where Paul Collingwood MBE will be placed.
If Warne picks his mates for the top 10 then Pakistan fans can moan all they want but it would be justified as they are all amazing cricketers.
Steve, london,
guess at the top 10 tendulkar, lara, mcgrath, ponting, gilchrist, akram, murali, ambrose, kumble, flintoff. Border hayden saqlain dravid and gough couldn't be too far off. Smokie - Navjot Sidhu. But judging by warnes howlers so far, is D.Cullinan a chance?
