England have named Matthew Hoggard in a 12-man squad for tomorrow’s final Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, the start of which will be delayed because of bad weather.
Hoggard, the Yorkshire swing bowler, returns in place of Stuart Broad having missed the drawn match at Colombo last week with a back injury.
Graeme Swann, the uncapped off spinner, is also included, with England to decide on the make-up of their team depending on conditions at the ground ahead of the midday start, two hours later than originally scheduled.
Unseasonal rain has left the pitch damp and perhaps susceptible to seam movement, but this ground traditionally encourages spin. Unfortunately, a further deluge today means that the first day's play will certainly not start until after lunch, Jeff Crowe, the International Cricket Council match referee, has announced.
Hoggard, 30, claimed six wickets in the 88-run defeat in the first Test at Kandy and is arguably England’s best bowler on the subcontinent. In 13 Tests in Asia, he has 49 wickets at an average of less than 27.
Steve Harmison and Ryan Sidebottom, who each claimed three wickets in Colombo, are the other fast bowlers included.
It is the first Test match to be played in Galle since the ground was devastated by the tsunami in December 2004 and Michael Vaughan’s team must win the match to maintain their position as the second-placed side in the Test rankings. Anything less than a victory to square the series would drop them down to fifth, while victory for Sri Lanka would take them second behind Australia.
