Ricky Ponting is adamant that he had to report Harbhajan Singh for an alleged racist comment during the second Test match between India and Australia in Sydney.
Anil Kumble, the India captain, revealed yesterday that he had asked Ponting, his Australian counterpart, to resolve the matter privately to avoid the crisis that has since disrupted the series.
But Ponting says it was his responsibility to lodge an official complaint with the on-field umpires because racism in cricket is too important a problem to treat lightly.
"I carried out my duties as captain," Ponting told the Nine Network television station. "It's not about me reporting anybody, it's the umpires' job to do that and that's what they did."
"When we sat down at the end and I had a really good chat with him and the Indian management and the few other players that were there.
"I said 'look, this is not about us, this is a big issue in the game and I want to move on. When this is done I want us to play the best series we can from here on' - and he agreed with that."
Harbhajan was found guilty of calling Andrew Symonds, the Australia all-rounder, a monkey during the Test, which Australia won on Sunday.
The India spin bowler has maintained his innocence and lodged an appeal, while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) initially responded by suspending the tour.
They later agreed to play the remaining two matches of the four-Test series but only on the condition that Harbhajan is cleared and has his three-match ban rescinded.
India are also unhappy with the behaviour of the Australia players during the series, accusing them of being overly zealous in their appeals and standing their ground when they had been caught behind.
Ponting suggested today that they should have behaved more sportingly. "Maybe I should have reacted differently here and Michael Clarke might be saying the same thing," he said. "A few of the guys might all be looking at what we've done that last game."

Ricky forced umpires to take action against Harbhajan
Stump mic picked up what ricky said to umpires
Ricky: Go Ben ,Go and talk to them on the way...tell them Australians are unhappy.

i really don't think the aussies understand what harbhajan called symonds on the field under provocation - i seriously doubt he would have called him a monkey, since it's quite...weak
as any street playing cricketer in india will tell you , he probably called him a " maan ki $#!@ " which is considerably more offensive since it references your mother, but is not simian, nor racist

Ricky Ponting bowled first ball five times by Harbhajan Singh, eight times all up. Yes, Ponting had to report Singh if he (Ponting) was going to continue in the series.
Don't agree? Ricky wouldn't do that?
Symonds wouldn't be party to such a dirty trick?
If Australia had lost the test, they would have had to start again to win the greatest number of tests in a row.
The evidence says that the incentive was too much for them.
The behaviour of the Australian team in claiming caches that weren't; forcing the umpire to give players out when clearly not; and in staying put when clearly out (assured of the umpire's support for whatever reason) supports this theory.
The only evidence against it is that the Aussie cricket team is a champion team of sportsmen.
I rest my case.
John Graham.

Lets bring a bit of perspective to this. Harbhajahn has taken 7 wickets in the two tests at over 50 runs a piece. One of those was clearly not out and a couple were cheap wickets at the end of the Australians second innings in Sydney. Regardless of the suspension/non suspension there was a fair chance he was going to be dropped for the Perth test anyway. This is also true of Hogg from the Australian perspective. The cospiracy theories, whilst entertaining, are completely ludicrous.

.....so I sat down with Anil and told him I had no alternative but to report Singh who has had my number as a bowler for a while now. With him out of the way I might get some runs.......

australian teams are not playing with game spirit, at any cost they want to win the game, this is not fair, even thought v have lot of technology, why the hell umpires r not using it?
fahim, bangalore , india
1. Australia needs to tighten up its act so that it is no longer seen as a team of sledgers or playing outside the spirit of the game
2. Umpires should not be forced out by other than the ICC
3. the Indian press should be told not to fan the flames of hysteria, nor its cricket board escalate such issues which are essentially about sport
4. We need an ICC under which all playing nations are regarded as equal; a countries' cricket wealth from media rights etc should count for nought
5. Racism/other offensive comments etc. should be treated particularly seriously

Many a time mistakes are made, and people realize that later. Ricky's time has come, but he is still adamant. On the monkey case, without a proof of who said what, it appeared a certainly avoidable situation. IMHO, it was pure vengeance against Bhajji in the veil of duty (Reports say Symmo was not interested). He did not care about the debacle and acrimony to follow, which Kumble did to his credit. It is a different matter that the umpires failed to diffuse the situation and the match referee displayed ignorance of basic tenets of a judgement. (We need more capable officials like Simon Tauffel). Ricky need to realize that he has at least temporarily, if not permanently, vitiated the atmosphere and forced a suffocating situation on the field. All players will be extra cautious. The unpleasant repercassion will spread to everywhere cricket is played. Fortunately for us, most cricket captains are tactful.
All the best to Ponting, and his batting form.

Ponting is being very clever with his complaint, he is looking to increase Australia's chances of winning the series, by getting one of the best spin bowlers in the world banned for the rest series gives you an advantage. Australia have a habit when fielding to appeal at everything preasurerising the umpire to give them a favoured decision. That's not cricket in a normal world that called Bullying.
Jatinder, London, UK
I guess now Britons, Pakistanis, South Africans, Indians and the rest of the cricket playing world will HAVE to report any aspersions that Ponting's men make about a players' descent. IT ALWAYS goes both ways.
Stephen, USA, USA
Regarding the charges on Harbhajan.
The hearing went unfair without any evidence.
So, appeal against Harbhajan's ban, means Harbhajan is not yet found guilty.
