India have beaten Sri Lanka by two wickets in the triangular Commonwealth Bank series in Australia. The result threatens Sri Lanka's qualification for the final of the tournament next month.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni guided India past Sri Lanka's total of 238 with only five balls remaining in the 50 over match at Adelaide. The India wicketkeeper finished with an unbeaten 50 after Yuvraj Singh had set-up victory by hitting 76 off 70 balls. Dhoni and Yuvraj's display steadied the ship for India after they slumped to 35 for three.
Sri Lanka were encouraged by India's early difficulties in the middle, but after economical bowling by Chaminda Vaas who took one for 27 from ten overs and Lasith Malinga, who took two for 37 in his ten overs, India were able to cut loose.
India had earlier restricted Sri Lanka to 238, despite the efforts of Kumar Sangakarra, who made 128 before he was removed by Irfan Pathan, and 71 from Mahela Jayawardene. Sri Lanka were hampered by poor running between the wickets, as they succumbed to three run-outs, which included the all-important wicket of Jayawardene.
Sri Lanka are bottom of the series's round-robin stage with six points behind India (12) and Australia (17).
