Mahendra Singh Dhoni, India's one-day captain, has been told to wear wicketkeeping gloves with less webbing between the thumb and forefinger. Dhoni wore gloves that breached the rules during the Commonwealth Bank Series game against Australia in Sydney on Sunday.
Jeff Crowe, the match referee, said that he raised the issue in the India dressing-room. “Dhoni immediately changed his gloves on the advice of the India team management, which was a reasonable thing to do,” he said.
Dhoni has not been penalised but has been told he could face punishment if wears the gloves before they have been modified and approved.
It was not the only controversy of the match. Ishant Sharma, the India fast bowler, was fined 15 per cent of his match fee for pointing to the pavilion after bowling Andrew Symonds, the Australia all-rounder who was embroiled in the sledging controversy during the Test series between the countries. Australia won the match by 18 runs after reaching a total of 317, the highest in the series so far.
The ICC has banned Marlon Samuels from bowling in international cricket until experts at Loughborough University have examined his action. An initial assessment by the ICC's panel of human movement specialists found that Samuels's elbow extension was 27 degrees on his faster balls and 35 degrees on his off breaks. An extension of 15 degrees is allowed. The 27-year-old, only an occasional bowler for West Indies, was reported by the umpires during the third Test against South Africa in Durban last month.
South Africa have been fined for a slow over-rate during their five-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the first Test in Mirpur yesterday. The match referee imposed the penalty because South Africa were three overs short of their target after time allowances. Graeme Smith, South Africa's captain, has been fined 30 per cent of his match fee and the players will pay 15 per cent of their fees - 5 per cent for every over below the target.
Yorkshire will be known as Yorkshire Carnegie in one-day cricket this season after “a significant investment” from Leeds Metropolitan University.
