Jimmy Anderson has set his sights on securing a regular place in the England team after claiming a five-wicket haul on his comeback to enable them to claim a commanding lead over New Zealand in the second Test.
The 25-year-old Lancashire seamer took five for 73 as New Zealand were dismissed for 198 on the second day at the Basin Reserve to earn England a 144-run first-innings lead, which was extended to 148 after they reached four without loss in reply by the close.
His performance was under more scrutiny than normal having been recalled alongside Stuart Broad as England decided to drop Stephen Harmison and Matthew Hoggard in the aftermath of their 189-run first Test defeat in Hamilton. But he came through his examination with flying colours and has now targeted becoming a regular fixture in England's line-up, a luxury he has not enjoyed since his first summer as a Test player in 2003.
"It's down to me now, I've got the chance and hopefully I can make the most of it," Anderson said. "I had a reasonable series in England during the summer, played one in Sri Lanka and hopefully now I can get some consistency going and get a run of games together.
"Why [my Test career] has gone the way it has I'm not sure. Looking forward I'm looking at this chance I have now to try to get a few games under my belt. I want to be the bowler the captain can throw the ball to when we need a wicket. I want to stake a claim and be here for a long time."
Anderson's haul was helped by him claiming a wicket with his fifth delivery and he conceded: "I think I found my rhythm from ball one which obviously helped.
"We knew from watching our innings that if you put the ball in the right area often enough, the pitch was going to help you a little bit and I think we pretty much always did that.
"We saw from our innings that it was doing a bit but if you're slightly off your line and length you could go for runs. We thought we might beat the bat a bit but we had to stay as patient as possible and wait for those edges to come."
Disappointed New Zealand wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum admitted England had responded to the conditions better than the hosts had, but has not given up hope of them mounting a fightback in the Test.
"It wasn't how we had that part of the day planned out but we've got an opportunity to come back tomorrow and hopefully correct our mistakes from today and give ourselves a chance of winning the game early on," McCullum said. "They found the length you have to bowl on that wicket that brought the edges into play.
"On the previous day we beat the bat a lot but it was probably because we bowled a touch short wheras they bowled that little bit fuller and that certainly brought the nicks into play."
