On his first return to Edgbaston since England’s Ashes victory in 2005, Simon Jones helped to seize an advantage for Worcestershire, his new county, in the last hour after Stephen Moore had carried his bat through the collapse. Moore’s chanceless 109 off 253 balls, with powerful strokes square of the wicket, appeared even better by the close as Warwickshire subsided to 39 for three on a green but true track.

Ian Westwood was trapped in front off his third ball of the innings. Jones, replacing Kabir Ali, had Darren Maddy caught behind with what appeared to be his effort ball. It made up for his dismissal off a slog, with Worcestershire one short of a second batting point, immediately after he had been hit on the grille by a bouncer from Neil Carter. Steve Magoffin, who helped to add 58 in 14 overs for the ninth wicket, looked threatening and bowled Michael Powell.

Warwickshire look as if they will struggle to bowl teams out twice this season - Jonathan Trott and Darren Maddy bowling at 70mph in tandem by the end of a session was a worrying sign - but Trott pitched the ball up, got it to move back in and bowled Ben Smith, shouldering arms, before lunch. Afterwards he had two in two, bowling Steven Davies, driving and then having Gareth Batty leg-before. He took only two championship wickets last season.
